Harnessing the natural value of rainwater Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems offer
supremely sustainable and economic solutions to the re-use of rainwater for non-drinking applications.
Never Short of Water
The high cost of providing purified drinking water is well known, but much of the water used by homes and industry does not require such a high level of purity – eg, toilet flushing, clothes and car washing, and garden watering. Natural rainwater can be collected, filtered and distributed for many uses, bringing major environmental and economic benefits – as well as adding value to a property.
Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems will never leave you inconvenienced by a shortage of water. Sensors detect when storage tanks are nearly empty and refill with mains water. When a sufficient quantity of water has built up, the switch reverts to natural rainwater mode.
Almost 50% of domestic water consumption can be replaced by using Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems.
The System Choices Garden Use
Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems are a simple solution for the re-use of water for outdoor cleaning, watering and bathing. Rainwater filtered and stored underground in an Aqabase® tank can be automatically turned on at will to provide all external water needs.
Domestic Use
Almost half of daily consumption can be replaced by rainwater 2% Drinking/cooking
4% Household cleaning 6% Personal hygiene
4% Garden
12% Washing clothes Drinking water
Replaceable by rainwater
6
Use of drinking water by domestic consumers
www.alumascdrainage.co.uk
7% Other 35% Bath/Shower 30% Toilet flushing
The Aqabull® and Aqadive® Rainwater Management Systems are designed for installation in single family or multifamily homes. Large applications – eg, blocks of flats and industrial buildings, can be handled using our twin pump units or custom designed systems. Aqabull® pumping systems are installed at ground floor or basement, or in an outdoor, protected enclosure.
Aqadive® pumping systems are installed at ground floor above the backwater level, or, as with Aqabull®, in an outdoor, protected enclosure.
Effective, Economic, Sustainable The principle is elegantly simple. Rainwater falling on a roof, is collected, filtered, stored
and distributed around a home or other types of building to fulfil a host of non-drinking
water uses - eg, bathing, wc flushing, car washing, clothes washing, garden watering, etc. 1
2
3

3
Rainwater falls on the roof and is collected by the guttering and channelled into the rainwater downpipe.
The rainwater is diverted through a filter into an underground rainwater storage tank. A pumping unit controls the supply of stored water. When an appliance or fitting is switched on, this is detected by a pressure switch, which activates a pump drawing water out of the storage tank to wherever it is required for use. When the appliance or fitting is switched off the pump ceases operation after a short delay. An overflow pipe allows excess stored water to escape to a soakaway or surface water drain.

What type of roof are you proposing – metal, flat, green? How will this affect your water collection – quantity, discolouration? What is the water to be used for – gardens, wc flushing, clothes washing, etc?
Where will storage tanks be situated in relation to the collection points?
Where will the water storage facility be in relation to the appliances to be supplied? Where will the pumping facilities be housed?
What is the annual rainfall for the location of the planned building?*
What is the volume of surface water generated?**
Based on this information a rainwater management system can be designed to maximise the use of freely available rainwater and reduce the need for use of mains drinking water. *
Available online or from local weather centres.

Installation hints for Harmer Kessel Aqadive® Rainwater Pumping Units
The mains refill port inside the Aqadive® unit must be installed at least 15cm above the backwater level.
The piping and cables for an Aqadive® or an Aqabull® unit are to be placed inside an empty pipe (DN 150) which is run with a continuous negative slope and in a frost free area from the Aqadive® or Aqabull® unit to the rainwater storage tank.
If this empty pipe enters the home or building below the backwater level it is important to protect this entrance with a Harmer Kessel DN 150 backwater sealing pipe insert - Ref 85412 (for Aqadive®), Ref 85413 (for Aqabull®).

Additional Information Product Advantages Load Class B manhole covers 12.5 tonnes load class
The Harmer Kessel manhole covers for Aqabase速 Komfort storage tanks are designed for Class B (12.5 tonnes) use. This enables the storage tanks to be placed under driveways or parking areas where passenger vehicle and light commercial traffic are present.
Recyclable material
Polyethylene can be fully recycled and reused for the production of high quality products.
Durable
Polyethylene guarantees a high durability against dents, cracks or breaks in the material.
Adjustable cover
Harmer Kessel System 400 Rainwater Filters for underground installation and the Harmer Kessel Aqabase速 Komfort Rainwater storage tanks are supplied with fully adjustable covers in various load classes. These covers are vertically adjustable, twistable and tiltable up to 5 degrees to allow for surface variations and slopes. These covers will automatically compensate for settlement or heaving of the soil.
Transport friendly
All components of Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems are produced from high quality, virgin polyethylene, which is impact resistant, durable and lightweight. Pumping units and filters are easily transported by hand while the storage tanks can be shipped with standard trucks because of their light weight/heavy duty construction. On site, the separators can also be easily moved with fork lifts using the integrated fork lift grips.
30
www.alumascdrainage.co.uk
Additional Information Automatic filter backwashing
All Harmer Kessel System 400 Rainwater Filters are available with or without the backwashing unit. The backwashing unit can also be installed at a later date.
Emergency Overflow
All Aqabul速 Rainwater Pumping Systems are equipped with an emergency overflow and an integrated odour trap.
Aqabull速 anchoring system for high groundwater areas
Where the Harmer Kessel Aqabase速 storage tank is installed in areas of high groundwater, it is important that the tank be firmly anchored. This is accomplished by securing the base with steel anchor bars in a 300mm tall footing or foundation as seen in the illustration.
Filter Extension Handle
Harmer Kessel System 400 Rainwater Filters for underground installation can be installed as deep as 1330mm below finished ground level. In instances where the filter is installed near this depth, a special filter insert with an extended handle is available for ease in removal or replacement of the filter for inspection and maintenance purposes.
Please Note: The anchoring system assists when only the lower portion of the tank is expected to encounter groundwater. In cases where a significant portion of the tank is expected to be under groundwater, please consult Alumasc prior to installation.

Technical Information Sample calculation
Step 1
Calculate the estimated yearly rainfall collection total. Formula
Horizontal collection area x roof runoff coefficient* x precipitation in lit/m2/year** x filter collection factor***
Single family house, roof area 170 m2. Run-off Coefficient = 1.0
* See included table
** Consult local rainfall historical data
*** If maintained and cleaned properly the Harmer Kessel System 400 Rainwater Filter can achieve a filter collection factor of 0.96
Result 170 m2 x 1.0 x 750
Step 2
Household with 4 inhabitants
litres x 0.96 = 122,400 litres/year m2/year
Calculate the annual service water requirement (see method opposite):

32
www.alumascdrainage.co.uk
58,560 litres
Result
More rainwater is collected annually than is required (122,400 litres > 58,560 litres)
The calculated required storage volume is 3,369 litres (see formula opposite)
The optimal rainwater storage tank volume is a 4,500 litre tank
Technical Information Planning and calculation principles
Run-off coefficients according to DIN 1986, Part 2, Section 7.1.2 (As at 03/1995)
Dimensions of rainwater storage tanks
The dimensions of rainwater storage tanks are largely determined by two factors: I
I
The run-off coefficient is used to allow for losses due to the position, gradient, orientation and type of material of the collection surface.
The rainwater yield
(Rainwater collection area, loss factors and local rainfall figures)
The amount of service water required
(Type and number of consumption points) For economic reasons, a balance has to be struck between the amount of rainwater available and the amount of service water needed. The available rainwater should be utilised and the amount of drinking water used to supplement it minimised.
Annual rainfall
When calculating the amount of rainwater available, use the annual rainfall figures in mm or litre/m2. Ask your local weather centre or consult the Internet.
Rainwater yield
The theoretically storable quantity of rainwater can be calculated as follows: Rainwater yield (litres/year) = ∑ A (m2) x Ψ x NH (l/m2) x ηFil A: Collection area Ψ: Run-off coefficient NH: Rainfall ηFil: Filter efficiency.
Type of collection surface
Run-off coefficient Ψ
Roof surface with a slope > 3 degrees
1.0
Roof surface with a slope <= 3 degrees
0.8
Intensively cultivated roof areas
0.3
Gravel-covered roofs
0.5
Extensively cultivated roof areas with soil depth over 100mm
Courtyards paved with concrete blocks and areas covered with slabs
0.3 0.7
Filter efficiency
When downpipe filters and fine fluidised bed filters or inlet filters are used, the manufacturer’s instructions on the volume flow of rainwater that can be used should be followed.

The £800million extension and refurbishment of St Pancras Station demanded the faithful restoration of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s neo-gothic facades and detailing. English Heritage insisted that replacement rainwater goods be perfect reflections of the original cast iron work. Alumasc met this challenge with Apex Heritage Cast Iron, making bespoke moulds to create replacement downpipes, gutters and rainwater heads that capture perfectly the authentic quality of the beautiful Victorian originals.
New Providence Wharf and Ontario Tower, London A dramatic, futuristic addition to London’s skyline, this mixed-use urban village of apartments, offices, retail and leisure spaces and hotel tower, is interwoven with a complex of green roofs, water features (including a canal) and podiums. To meet the technical and aesthetic demands of this diverse construction project, three premium Alumasc products were used: ZinCo biodiverse and intensive green roofs, Hydrotech structural waterproofing and Derbigum waterproofing membrane.
Lancashire Schools
Alumasc provided all the components and technological expertise needed to achieve the advanced waveform metal roof which gives this new sports hall (one of three, serving schools in the area) its distinctive appearance. The dramatic curvature has been quickly and economically achieved by using the Armaseam ‘zip-up’ aluminium roofing system (also available in copper, stainless steel or zinc) with Alumasc rainwater goods and Skyline fascias and soffits.
