SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT GIVES LOCAL STUDENTS A HELPING HAND Scholarship support from our generous donors in North America has opened the door to five bright students for whom a University education is a dream come true.

NAFUM Scholarships were awarded to five first year undergraduate students from the Greater Manchester area who joined the University via the Manchester Access Programme (MAP). MAP aims to widen access to university education by targeting students who would otherwise struggle to attend despite being academically able, and supporting them throughout their applications. Students are given the chance to demonstrate their potential and academic curiosity through a series of skills-building activities such as academic writing, presentations, one-to-one mentoring and three-day residential conference.

Typical of the talented young people NAFUM supporters are helping is Kamran Hussain, studying Criminology. He believed a university education was out of his reach.

“My mum always tells me the story of how I wanted to be a garbage collector and it makes me laugh. I had no hopes of going to university before MAP, but when someone came to my school to tell us about it, I could see it was a great opportunity.

“The programme was hard work but I’m glad I did it.

It gave me the confidence and skills to apply to Manchester and I feel like I have a head start through the additional financial support I receive.

“My dad is a taxi driver and my mother is a housewife so I’m the first from my family to attend university. In the future I’d like to do a conversion course after three years of Criminology to become a lawyer.

“I’d like to thank NAFUM members for the support they’ve given me. I can’t stress how much it is helping me throughout my degree programme.”

Nurturing talent and recognising potential is at the heart of our support for The University of Manchester. Since 1999, we have provided scholarships which have changed the lives of over 100 students studying at Manchester, and the continued generosity of alumni in the US means we are able to help more promising students, from both sides of the Atlantic, than ever before.

NAFUM: THE GAME CHANGER There are many reasons why students wish to study at The University of Manchester, and many ways in which students are able to fulfil their Manchester ambitions. The generosity of NAFUM donors provides welcome support for those embarking on the journey across the pond.

Alicia Rouverol arrived in Manchester in fall 2012 to join the Masters in Creative Writing programme, thanks to a Masters Scholarship funded by American alumni and friends donating to NAFUM. Under the professorship of award-winning writer Jeanette Winterson, Alicia and colleagues published ‘The Manchester Anthology’; a literary work featuring novel extracts, short stories and poetry by students from the University’s Centre for Creative Writing.

Twelve months later, Alicia is embarking on a PhD, having been awarded The University of Manchester’s prestigious President’s Doctoral Scholar Award; an accolade awarded only to the strongest doctoral candidates from across the world. This is an achievement Alicia can attribute to the transformative effect the NAFUM Scholarship has had on her life and career, as she explains: “When I think about the NAFUM Scholarship and its impact on my life, I think about the concept of game changer. The term is bandied about a lot.

Merriam-Webster defines it as ‘a newly introduced element or factor that changes an existing situation or activity in a significant way’. I want to take a moment to explain why and in what ways the NAFUM Scholarship served as a game changer for me.

“The NAFUM Scholarship brought me to Manchester. It solidified my funding scheme as a graduate student coming into the University. But it did something else: it required that I step up my game. I’d been ‘backed’, so to speak. I realized this was a make or break moment for me as a writer, and I had to make it count.

“Since arriving at Manchester, I’ve now written ten stories, twelve poems, started a new novel, The Other Side of Darwin, and finished my novel Dry River as my dissertation. All because of this prod: this reminder daily that I’d been given this extraordinary privilege to come to Manchester to write and that I could not squander that privilege. I owed the University, I owed my funders; it was an obligation to do all I could to make my choice of Manchester count.

When I think about the NAFUM Scholarship and its impact on my life, I think about the concept of game changer.

“The extraordinary outcome of all of this – of the Scholarship and the hard work that ensued – is that I applied to the PhD program earlier this year. I secured a slot and then applied for the President’s Doctoral Scholarship Award (PDSA). To my amazement, I won the PDSA! All of this grew out of coming to Manchester with the help of NAFUM. All of it grew out of one small step, leading to the next step, in turn bringing me to Manchester. I was willing to work, willing to take the risk. That is how my game changed.

“The question remains: on which side of the Atlantic will I teach after completing my degree?

The NAFUM Scholarship – and all that has transpired since – leaves open the possibility of the UK. Manchester – this vital literary city has taken hold of me. It must be all those long walks to the bus stop, dodging puddles, gathering my thoughts, preparing for the day’s work ahead at the University.

“And what of that ‘newly introduced element or factor’ that changed my ‘existing situation’ or writing life? That element, or unexpected development, that served as the catalyst? It was the email telling me I had won the NAFUM Scholarship. That day, I did a little victory dance in my living room, where I ran laps in glee. It has changed every aspect of my game since. Thank you again for that opportunity, and for trusting me to take the next step through this door.”

SCHOLARS WITH INTERNATIONAL IMPACT The generosity of NAFUM supporters brought three US graduate students to Manchester to train as leaders in the fields of international development, poverty alleviation and humanitarianism.

NAFUM WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT AND NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Postgraduate students Lesa Nord, Jennifer Seward and Senowa Mize-Fox, earned the NAFUM Masters Scholarship which supported them during their year in Manchester.

Balancing a strong academic record with a desire to make a difference to people in need, Lesa has set her sights on a career in emergency medicine, while Jenny and Senowa plan to use their postgraduate training in poverty alleviation and development to improve the lives of people living in poverty across the world.

Lesa, from Minnesota, said: “I have been preparing for a medical education for the past few years and have been accepted into medical school at Des Moines University. However, my experiences as a volunteer in Haiti made it clear to me that to be truly effective in this career path I need to be prepared, not merely with a medical education, but with an understanding of the issues involved in humanitarian assistance.”

She continued: “I am so incredibly grateful for the last year that I spent in Manchester studying for a MA in Humanitarianism and Conflict Response and I feel much more prepared for the future because of this training”.

The Scholarship provided a huge help towards financing my year in Manchester. I learned an incredible amount from my studies and also personally – I wouldn’t be where I am today without such support! I will always cherish my time in Manchester.

The lessons learned and contacts made have enriched my life and changed it forever.

As NAFUM continues to go from strength to strength, we look forward to another successful year under the direction and leadership of our new President, Gian Fulgoni (BSc Physics 1969).

Gian, a member of the NAFUM Board since its establishment in 1998, took over as President this summer. Chicago-based Gian has twice been named Illinois Entrepreneur of the Year and brings to the Board over 30 years’ entrepreneurial insight and leadership experience, most notably as the current Chairman and founder of market research company comScore.

We would like to thank the outgoing NAFUM President Tony Thornley (BSc Chemistry 1967) whose commitment, dedication and enthusiasm to the leadership of NAFUM has been integral to the development of the board and its activity in the States. His contribution has had a tremendous impact through giving to and promoting the University’s key strategic and philanthropic aims.

ALUMNI OFFER STUDENTS GLOBAL CAREER INSIGHT This summer, four undergraduate students from The University of Manchester travelled to New York for a transformational cultural and professional development experience as part of the international Global Graduates scheme.

The scheme enables students to learn first-hand from successful leaders in business, education, finance, law and media who can all count a Manchester degree amongst their achievements on their resumé.

As the job market for graduates has never been more competitive, the Global Graduates programme provides students the opportunity to tap into the expertise of our alumni and friends across the globe to help improve their career prospects and employability after graduation. Teams of students also met alumni in Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore.

A dozen New York-based alumni generously gave their time to hold a meeting with a group of students, sharing their experiences and offering them advice on ways to stand out from the crowd and succeed in the world of work.

Joanne Hughes, an undergraduate Law student, and Jessica Waugh, studying Politics and International Relations, share their experiences of Global Graduates below. As well as benefitting from the expertise of our alumni community, both students were grateful for the scholarship support they received from Manchester-based benefactor Paul Lee.

I have been inspired by the hosts in New York through hearing their stories and advice. I have been able to see first-hand the breadth of opportunity for UK law graduates in New York. I feel that I am now much more motivated about my future; rather than waiting for an opportunity to come to me, I am spending more time researching new and exciting opportunities and gaining contacts in relevant fields. With a clearer goal to aim towards, I am now more driven and determined, and look forward to what my future career will entail.

It was really insightful visiting as many varied businesses as we did because it made every one of us realise how many options we really do have. The meetings were completely different to anything I’ve ever experienced. My personal highlight was meeting Manchester alumni Simon Jowett at FDM and Stig Sorenson at Bloomberg as they were able to give us advice about travelling to New York and making the transition from the UK. “Since the trip I've started looking at more career options and have become really motivated about my own future. DO YOU WORK AT A UNIVERSITY IN THE US? International students contribute much to the richness and diversity of our student body, and we are always pleased to welcome students from US institutions to Manchester to study abroad.

The University of Manchester has a well-established Study Abroad programme, which allows us to welcome many students from US universities to study in Manchester for a single semester or a full year, earning academic credits which then transfer back towards their home degree.

Students at US institutions who are thinking about studying abroad find it helpful to speak to someone on their campus about their own experiences of studying at an overseas location, and we would very much value your involvement if you currently work at, or have connections with, a US university.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI Each year a team of enthusiastic Manchester students look forward to the chance to speak with members of the North American alumni community through the annual NAFUM telephone campaign.

MSc Poverty and Development student Jenny Seward applied to take part in the calling campaign having received a NAFUM Masters Scholarship.

Jenny said: “My NAFUM Scholarship helped me to come to Manchester, so I wanted to do whatever I could to ensure students like me have the same opportunities.”

As part of the team of 60 students from across the University, Jenny makes calls to alumni to share University news, indulge in reminiscing and to seek support for NAFUM. Jenny said: “I love hearing about the diversity of experiences alumni had in Manchester, as well as finding out what they are up to now. It provides a real look at life at the University over the last five decades and I have learnt a lot about the University’s legacy and transformation over this time.”

Through these calls our students can learn from your experiences which can help shape their own career plans, and it is a great chance to share your views on the opportunities and services provided for Manchester alumni.

ALUMNI CELEBRATE AT ICONIC NEW YORK LANDMARK Alumni in New York gathered together at Manhattan’s Rockefeller Plaza in April for an evening of networking and nostalgia at the headquarters of international media company NBC Universal.

The event was hosted by Professor Ian Jacobs, Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, a highly respected University academic and clinician specialising in gynaecological cancer.

Alumni and guests enjoyed hearing about news from Manchester, including the many connections between the Manchester, the USA, and New York City. Professor Jacobs shared news of Manchester’s strong research partnerships with US universities tackling deeply engrained national and international problems, such as global poverty (with Harvard and Duke), nuclear energy (Iowa), humanitarian and medical emergency assistance (with Tufts, Harvard and George Washington), as well as his own work with Harvard in cancer research.

Guests also heard from fellow alumnus David Crossen, Senior Vice-President of Human Resources for NBC Universal, who enabled the reception to be held in such an iconic location.

The reception provided a welcome opportunity for the University to maintain its links with North American alumni and for guests to make connections with fellow Manchester alumni living and working in New York.

There was much interest in the Global Graduates scheme, a fantastic student work experience programme for current Manchester students piloted last year in New York, which has grown from strength to strength. Read more about this initiative on page 4.

CALIFORNIAN ALUMNI SHARE ENGLISH AFTERNOON TEA Every few months, alumni in Northern California welcome fellow Manchester graduates into their homes to enjoy conversation and cuisine.

Over the summer, alumni gathered together to share a traditional English afternoon tea in the glorious California sunshine. It was a great opportunity to network with each other and to reminisce about favourite foods from Manchester. The group was delighted to welcome several new alumni members and organiser Rohana Gunawardena (BSc Mathematics 1987), the coordinator of the Northern California alumni activities, managed to source PG tips for the authentic English tea taste.

The English tea idea was inspired by a ‘pot luck’ gathering earlier in the year, kindly hosted by John and Madeline Burnell, which consisted completely of desserts!

The Northern California alumni group

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE EXPERT JOINS THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER The University of Manchester has made a major new appointment in the field of regenerative medicine. Professor Giulio Cossu, famous world-wide for his work on cellular therapies for muscular dystrophy, joins The University of Manchester from University College London.

Professor Cossu, who is clinically trained, will become the new Constance Thornley Chair in Regenerative Medicine at the University, and will lead a major new initiative in regenerative medicine.

Professor Cossu’s research is developing new ways to treat muscular dystrophies; inherited disorders that gradually cause the muscles to weaken. His team of researchers have worked for a number of years on the Professor Giulio Cossu cellular signals and mechanisms that regulate the formation of skeletal muscle during embryonic development. Specifically, they are interested in the cell biology of tissue formation and regeneration as a tool to unravel the cellular basis of human diseases.

Leading international collaborations with clinicians and researchers, Professor Cossu will continue and develop his research into rebuilding musculoskeletal tissues at Manchester.

“The thing that really impressed me about Manchester is this feeling that things are happening,” Professor Cossu said.

There’s a real buzz and new projects are being developed.

There’s a drive to make things happen; there are spectacular facilities and an exciting research environment which I’m looking forward to being a part of.

Giulio will be a catalyst for major new regenerative medicine advances in Manchester. We are also immensely grateful to US-based alumnus and NAFUM director Tony Thornley, and his wife Gillian, who are generously supporting this Chair.”
