THE AD&V TEAM HELPS PAINT A COMMUNITY MURAL AT

RENAISSANCE SQUARE

On April 13, the AD&V Team helped paint a mural at our ward-winning affordable housing project, Renaissance Square. Local ar tist Javier Cintrón, designed and drew the 100 feet wall with elements of traditional Puer to Rican homes in the neighborhood by incorporating architectural elements and materials, local flowers, plants, and animals, among others. At the event, residents, community leaders and the AD&V Team, along with family members, grabbed paint brushes and painted the outlined design of the Renaissance Square community mural. The purpose of this collaborative effor t to paint the mural was to foster a sense of community and belonging. AD&V worked with project developer, McCormack Baron Salazar (MBS), to create a video about Renaissance Square’s meaning and impact. It will tell the story of how the original Las Gladiolas project, built in 1969 and demolished in 2011, went from beign a problematic high-rise, high-density public housing community, to becoming an entirely reconceived mixeduse, mixed-income, landmark community project. The upcoming video will also include footage from the painting of the Renaissance Square mural. ABOUT RENAISSANCE SQUARE Renaissance Square is the first mixed-income rental housing development of its kind to be built on Puer to Rico. In stark contrast to the high-rise structures they replace, the project has 140 apar tments with buildings designed to human scale that integrate with the surrounding environment. The architectural style is traditional, with contemporary details: a full depar ture from the cookie-cutter, monolithic Modernist towers they replace. This project was designed to take advantage of existing sun and wind path patterns in order to maximize natural light, cross ventilation, and overall energy efficiencies throughout the day. Rooftops spor t photovoltaic solar panels to offset traditional electricity costs and minimize the community’s environmental footprint. Exterior windows are double-paned in order to fur ther reduce energy consumption by the buildings’ high-efficiency cooling systems. Ample parkways and green spaces were strategically placed throughout the neighborhood. 2

Renaissance Square offers residents access to walking trails, community gardens, playgrounds, an indoor gym, activity rooms, public computer rooms, and controlled-access security systems. Along the area’s principal avenues, commercial space has been designated at street level to encourage the entry of local businesses: supermarkets, restaurants, specialty stores, and other local trade. Today, Renaissance Square creates a safe and inviting social atmosphere that provides a sense of place for their tenants and the surrounding community. #TRASHCHALLENGE For this year’s Ear th Day celebration, AD&V joined the #TrashChallenge movement. This international challenge has encouraged people to help the environment by collecting trash in public spaces and posting the before & after photos on social media using the hashtag #TrashChallenge. As thousands of people go outdoors to help clean up the trash, they motivate other people to take care of their community and future generations.

BEFORE

This effor t, which was carried out in the Santurce area, was made possible thanks to the suppor t of ConWaste, who picked up the trash that we collected at the site and disposed of it responsibly. “The more companies or institutions that join the challenge, the greater impact we will achieve on our island. The purpose of accepting this invitation is to continue motivating others to keep their communities and Puer to Rico clean. We all have a responsibility and a role to play in taking care of Puer to Rico and the Ear th, “said Cristina Villalón, co-founder and par tner of Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón. Ear th Day calls awareness to the need to protect the environment and conserve our biodiversity by making responsible use of our natural resources. Through our sustainable designs and projects, we are committed to helping and protecting the Planet.

PROJECT UPDATE STAGING OF

BAYSHORE VILLAS In April we completed the installation of our latest mixedincome affordable housing project, Bayshore Villas. During the installation, furniture for the office spaces and common areas was installed. The furniture selections had a subttle coastal inspiration based on the project’s location in Puer ta de Tierra, which is known for its close proximity to the ocean. The installation took about four days to complete and was a total success! It’s expected that by the end of this year residents will begin moving into Bayshore Villas.
