RADICALLY CONTEMPORARY

100 Years Bauhaus → 1919–2019 Selb. In 1919, Walter Gropius (1883-1969) founded the State Bauhaus in Weimar as a place for experimenting with integrated designs, so creating the foundations of modern architecture and design. In 1963, many years after the Bauhaus was closed, he received an enquiry from Philip Rosenthal, son of the company founder and visionary chairman of the board: the commission to build the new Rosenthal production site at Rothbühl for

the world-famous porcelain manufacturer in Selb. Not only did this project turn into a revolutionary and modern industrial building reflecting Bauhaus and, with TAC, one of the most successful porcelain series in the world, but also a deep friendship between two humanists who have changed our way of thinking and acting.

Rosenthal am Rothbühl → Walter Gropius That co-operation with Walter Gropius is not only a milestone and a special treasure in the company’s history but also a significant part of Bavaria’s architecture and design history. Until this day, the Rosenthal porcelain factory at Rotbühl has

been a sophisticated manufacturing site for Rosenthal porcelain in which craftsmanship, art and highly modern technology are united, following the Bauhaus ideas.

Rosenthal revives the Stripesmotif designed by Walter Gropius on the 1969 TAC range and transfers it to a limited edition tea set made of black porcelain with a powder platinum motif as well as to a complete TAC set collection that re-interprets the original design. The latter is reminiscent of the Rosenthal Rotbühl site’s colours inspired by Bauhaus, taking up its façade elements made of exposed concrete in some items.

Radically Contemporary → Exhibition In this anniversary year, Rosenthal will approach Walter Gropius’ work from two sides. The “Radically Contemporary” exhibition in the former office buildings of the Rosenthal site in Selb will show the visionary thinking of the designer, architect and person who was Walter Gropius, his work for Rosenthal and his charisma to this day. In the second part of the exhibition, unique product developments by internationally known designers as well as high school projects reaching as far as China, will

illustrate the huge influence of the Bauhaus movement on the design of the modern age. A virtual reality project will ensure an exceptionally emotional experience, allowing an interactive tour of the inside of the Rosenthal site at Rotbühl that was opened in 1967 and is now under preservation order. The exhibition will open its doors for this first time on the occasion of the Night of Culture in Selb on 6 April 2019.

The exhibition at the POS >K ick-off in time with MCBW in Munich: Rosenthal Store, Munich 9.– 17. March 2019 Information about the exhibition on request, please contact us.

Bethan Laura Wood She loves to experiment. Colours, patterns and materials in particular. The works of Bethan Laura Wood move between art, design and craftsmanship. All of them being quite extravagant items. The English designer, who has her own studio in London, studied Product Design at the Royal College of Art under Martino Gamper and Jurgen Bey. She designs furniture, lamps, jewellery and carpets - for manufacturers such as Moroso, Hermès and Kvadrat.

For Rosenthal, Bethan Laura Wood dared to approach a real classic: the TAC porcelain set that Walter Gropius developed in the 1960s with his architectural practice by the name of The Architects Collaborative.

Zaha Hadid

Contrast is key - following this motto, Zaha Hadid created a collection of extraordinary vases, bowls and table lights in platinum, black-matte, white-matte and white-gold that fully shadows the Iraqi-British architect's design principles: free in form, organically flowing in character and extravagant in style.

Photo: Brigitte Lacombe

Biography Zaha Hadid (1950–2016) from Iraq was one of the most wellknown architects in the world. Her bold designs were long considered impossible to build. In 2004, she was the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Prize. In 1979, she founded the architectural practice Zaha Hadid Architects after first completing her mathematics studies, then her diploma at the Architectural Association School in London. Projects with fashion icons such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton and brands such as adidas, Alessi, Artemide and B&B Italia highlighted her great creative potential and enthusiasm for continuously discovering new terrains. Her most important architectural work included the fire station on the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein, which also promoted her breakthrough, the Guangzhou Opera House and the library on the Economics University campus in Vienna from 2013.

Miniature architecture The Lapp Collection is characterised by drop-shaped openings and their fine interplay of matte and shiny surfaces. Flowers can be arranged classically as well as very playfully sideways. While the Weave series embodies the perfect interaction of merging lines, as is typical for Hadid’s style, the Strip Collection is

sculptural. Based on a strict square that acts as the stand, the dynamic body of a vase arises, striving upwards similar to a building, ending in a perfectly round opening.

JUNTO  Eating, enjoying and celebrating life together – in an innovative and playful way, the new Rosenthal Junto design combines people and their love of good food from all over the world. Fine porcelain, sensual ceramics and warm wood blend subtly, allowing countless combinations for any cuisine. This is how Junto turns into a casual stage for modern dining without limits, yet with a good portion of individual style. Aquamarine and Opal Green beautifully complement the existing colour portfolio with subtle and expressive shades of blue and green.

Aquamarine is seen as the mother of all gems. Even the name takes up the close connection with nuances of sea water ranging from delicate to dark blue and their visual reflections and depths. The circular shades of the new Junto blue reflect the never ending variety of water. Broken up with pastel speckles in beige and cream, every plate is unique. Junto Aquamarine lends lightness and pleasant freshness on cream-coloured stoneware, turning the dining table into a place of well-being.

JUNTO → Aquamarine and Opal Green The harmonious shade of Opal Green complements the existing Junto porcelain colours Ocean Blue, Pearl Grey and White. It radiates peace, clarity and openness. The fine glazing that reminds us of the cool colour of gems puts the subtle diamond relief perfectly in the limelight, expressing its presence at the table, despite its sensitive modesty.

New → Magazine The popular Junto Magazine now has a new look. And more contemporary than ever on the subject of super food.

Brillance White A surface meets a sphere. Tension is created. The enticing interaction between two perfect geometries - that is the idea of Brillance. And for this design, Bone China is particularly suitable. The material is not just translucent with a warm glow. Thin shards melt surface and sphere into one shape.
