*Identity?

Introduction.

“The phenomenon of universalization, while being an advancement of mankind the same time coincides a sort of subtle destruction, not only of traditional cultures, which might not be an irreparable wrong, but also of what I shall call for the time being the creative nucleus of great cultures. That nucleus on the basis of which we interpret life. What I shall call in advance the ethical and mythical nucleus of mankind. The conflict springs up from there. We have the feeling that this single world civilization at the same time exerts a sort of attrition or wearing away at the expense of the cultural resources, which have made the great civilizations of the past. This threat is expressed among other disturbing effects. By the spreading before our eyes of a mediocre civilization, which is, the absurd counterpart of what it was just calling elementary culture.

• 6

Every where in the world one finds the same slot machines, the same plastic or aluminum atrocities, the some twisting of language by propaganda. etc. It seems as if mankind, by approaching en masse a basic consumer culture, were also stopped en masse at a subcultural level. Thus we come to the crucial problem confronting nations just rising from underdevelopment. In order to get on to the road toward modernization, is it necessary to jettison the old cultural past, which has been the raison d’être of a nation? .. Where the paradox on the one hand, it has to root itself in the soil of its past, forge a national Spirit. and unfurl this spiritual and cultural revindication before the colonialist’s personality But in order to take part in modern civilization, It is necessary at the same time to take part in scientific, technical and political rationality, something, which very often requires the pure and simple, abandon of a whole cultural past. It is a fact: every culture cannot sustain and absorb the shock of modern civilization. There is the paradox: How to become modern and to return to sources; How to revive an old. dormant civilization and take part in universal civilization.” -Paul Ricoeur, History and Truth

Why is this problem of identity important today? The return to religion and the search for lasting values reflects deep dissatisfaction about the products of modernity. The basic expectations of science and technology have not been satisfying, mass media and universal education cast cloud over the worlds cultures, they are now reacting, everywhere in developed countries and cities people are crying about the loss of identity and its effects on the society. The process of seeking an identity is a procedure by which man understands his historic past, and defines its processes and its products that keep his spiritual and material needs in balance.

The growth of the global economy carries with it an enormous range of products around the world and the tendency for them to be used uncritically, both regional products and imported ones. This has affected our architecture and cities which are becoming generic, a term first used by Rem Koolhaas,, generic cities without history and without identity. Is there no way to escape from this monotonous world? “Even in a ocean of a thousand shoal of fish, every group has its own identity”, so that it can be identified, are we still in that direction? Or are we mere fish in an ocean crying about the loss of our identity. Why are we searching for an identity? Have we lost it? Did we ever have one?

The concept of IDENTITY

In an Abstract and Conceptual Sense The entirety of the work to be discussed here will refer to the concept of identity, i.e. that which is identical. It is therefore important to clarify the concept as a lexical item and as a mental construct that is projected to the professional level and whose amplitude and precision is worth noting. Consequently it seems necessary to become acquainted with the origin of the word, that is, its etymological sense, so as to provide a clearer reference to the research aims Etymologically `identity’ is derived as an adjective from the Latin IDEM, which means the same, also, at the same time, to which a further meaning can be added, meaning the same, as in the case of the word IDENTICUS, which already existed in the XIX century. You mean the I century!

• 8

• 9

On the other hand, the word can also be viewed, not as a lexical item, but as a mental construct. Indeed if IDENTITY means similarity, it can only refer to a multiple existence, for something cannot be similar to itself. It follows that similarity within a given multiplicity is required, although this does not imply that similarity turns into equality. This is a different interpretation from that given in the postulate, or `Identity Principle’ expressed by the proposition A is A. In reality no two objects are equal, because if this were the case they would constitute merely two names representing one and the same object

Thus the idea of IDENTITY, meaning a given property shared by two or more objects has also to refer to a definite point in time and space, since any two objects may have properties, which do not refer to the same point in time, nor to the same space (QUALITATIVE IDENTITY), or on the contrary, they may have properties which refer to one and the same object, which have two different names. (NUMERIC IDENTITY) So, when there is a search for similarities in different points in time and space, one must be conscious of the fact that one is dealing with things that are not equal, but whose differences are conferred through an identical reference, that is, the same (IDEM). Moreover, this reference, which constitutes IDENTITY with substantive properties, is also in constant mutation as a result of its spatial-temporal relationship.

“Understanding that identity is an issue of utmost priority today, in this world of globalization, this study aims at familiarizing the readers with the whole concept of identity, and the various factors that arise as a part of a quest for identity.”

A relationship of identity is thus constituted in which the addition of differences to similarities, guarantees a genuine IDENTITY. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Pellentesque sit amet mauris ipsum,Lorem ipsum dolor sit ame

What is Identity?

Neccessity

The purpose of this exhibition is to see how contemporary young architects in the specific context of Portugal are responding to the issues of globalization and advancement of technology, yet being sensitive to their environment and the history of their country or region. Identity is of critical importance today, as through this sense of clarity man is able to reinforce his concern about his historical position and have a sense of clarity as to its direction. I see identity as a dynamic force evolving in a given time and place in response to extrinsic forces which we all seem to recognize, as well as intrinsic ones from within which are more difficult to negate, because we are constantly living and observing them all the time and they are an integral part of our daily lives.
