MISSION STATEMENT
Guided by Franciscan values and the ideal of “knowledge joined with love,” and rooted in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions, Alvernia is a rigorous, caring, and inclusive learning community committed to academic excellence and to being and fostering broadly educated, life-long learners; reflective professionals and engaged citizens; and ethical leaders with moral courage.
Alvernia’s Mission Statement represents the ideal of a university education committed to academic excellence while developing lifelong learners who seek knowledge joined with love – a uniquely Franciscan perspective mirroring the intellection vision of a thirteenth century Franciscan academic at the university of Paris, St. Bonaventure. Our core values, collegiality, contemplation, peacemaking, service, and humility, create a learning environment that is meant to be formative and transformative, committed to service and ethical leadership, doing well and doing good.
HISTORY
In 2018, Alvernia celebrated its 60th Anniversary, and in the span of more than a half century this small women’s college, founded in 1958 by the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters to prepare women religious for the mission of Catholic education, has become a regionally and nationally recognized comprehensive, competitive, multi-campus university. Under the leadership of a dynamic board and visionary president, Alvernia today remains a characterbuilding institution that has remained true to the mission and vision of the founding sponsors, with a heritage and history that reflects the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi.
Both internally and externally, Alvernia has tried to create a culture on campus which points to and reminds the community that we share a rich Franciscan heritage: all around us are the saints, the founders and the places that serve as markers and reminders of our blessed tradition and history. Our history covers more than a half-century marked by courage, gratitude, faith, and the ability to recognize graced opportunity when God presents it. We have moved into our second half-century with pride, confidence, and gratitude for all that has been entrusted to us.

Glynis A. Fitzgerald, Ph.D.
the Eighth President of ALVERNIA UNIVERSITY
In July 2023, Glynis A. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., became Alvernia University’s eighth president and the first female layperson appointed to the role in the University’s history. She served as our senior vice president and provost for four years, helping lead Alvernia through exceptional growth and transformation.
As president, Fitzgerald is accelerating that momentum to shepherd Alvernia into the future and shape higher education for a new generation while carrying forward the spirit of Alvernia’s foundresses, the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, who have been caring for students with unwavering compassion and love for nearly a century. Likewise, Fitzgerald is deeply committed to fostering a caring learning environment that nurtures students individually through their academic journey and beyond.
Under Fitzgerald’s leadership, Alvernia’s world-class faculty is delivering a distinctive, studentcentered liberal arts based curriculum and innovative technical programs designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce. Fitzgerald has fostered many vital partnerships with regional industry leaders to develop and refresh academic programs to allow students to step right into careers. This includes a new Physician Associate program developed in anticipation of an influx of new doctors into the region’s many healthcare systems; an apprenticeship to degree program connecting students, beginning in their sophomore year, with employers in their fields; and the O’Pake Fellows Program, which provides students the support and space to work with as many as 20 different companies on real-world projects through their college careers.
Fitzgerald is also spearheading several projects to expand Alvernia’s footprint throughout the region by meeting the needs of the communities and students. Continuing the success of the university’s innovative town-gown CollegeTowne model, Fitzgerald is resourcing new communitybased resource centers in Pottsville and various locations throughout the greater Philadelphia metro area. These locations provide a mixture of graduate, adult education, and certificate programs while an ever-expanding partnership network provides high-touch experiential learning opportunities for students. These efforts simultaneously aide economic development and entrepreneurship throughout the region.
Fitzgerald prioritizes community unity and service and enjoys meeting students, faculty, and staff where they are, and genuinely supports their endeavors. She embraces the Bernardine Sisters’ commitment to service. She joins the campus community in making a difference in others’ lives
through Alvernia’s service days and evolving strategic service initiatives housed in the university’s Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement .
Among Fitzgerald’s strategic priorities as president is to make college more accessible and to help remove barriers to persistence for all students. Since Alvernia’s Hope Fund was established in 2020, over 1,000 students have continued their education, despite financial challenges.
Access and opportunity, along with academic engagement, student success, and community engagement, are pillars in Alvernia’s largest comprehensive campaign in history, Partners in Progress, which entered its public phase in October 2023. The campaign garnered $55 million of an ambitious goal of $70 million in just three years to continue to fund the university’s strategic direction.
Her leadership extends deeply into the community and beyond. She sits on the Central PA Advisory Board and the Corporate Marketing Committee of Caron Treatment Centers. She is the Vice Chair of the Reading Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. She is committed to caring for the environment and is actively instituting sustainability initiatives across Alvernia’s campuses. She loves the outdoors, and, in her free time, she and her son Conor enjoy theater, live music, horseback riding and travel.
Fitzgerald’s 25 years of experience as a higher education leader includes Fitzgerald’s previous service as associate vice president of Academic Affairs and dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Central Connecticut State University, where she was also a professor. She earned doctoral and master’s degrees in organizational communication at SUNY Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in communication at Edinboro University.

Academic Symbolism
Academic ceremonies contain many century-old rituals and symbols. The elaborate attire and symbols hold important meanings in the ceremony process and convey the continuation of academic tradition from medieval times to the present. Incorporating these traditions unites Alvernia University with the community of scholars and institutions of higher learning.
Presidential Regalia
The academic gown of the President of Alvernia University carries the official colors of the university: maroon and gold. This regalia is worn by the President at all official academic functions.
Presidential Ceremonial Medallion
The medallion is the symbol of the Office of the President and worn at all academic ceremonies.
University Mace
The staff carried at the front of the academic procession is called a mace and represents the authority of the Office of the President.
Academic Attire
Associate and bachelor gowns have pointed sleeves and are designed to be worn closed, where as master gowns may be worn either open or closed. These gowns have oblong sleeves that are open at the wrist and hangs down. The doctor gown has bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn either open or closed. These gowns have velvet facing and velvet chevrons.
Hoods for academic gowns are typically black and made of the same material as the gown. Associate and bachelor hoods are three-feet long with two-inch-wide colored borders. Masters hoods are three-and-a-half feet long with a three-inch-wide colored border, and the doctor hoods are four-feet long with five-inch-wide colored borders. The colored lining of the hood represents the college and university presenting the degree and the color facing indicates the field of study.

The Historical Significance of Gonfalons
Gonfalons date back to the Middle Ages, where they were used as a means of identification. The earliest Gonfalons were typically flags or banners hung from crossbars. The shapes of the Gonfalons varied, with some coming to a point while others had streamers hanging from the bottom. Gonfalons were used to identify households, fighting units, or offices in medieval times. Gonfalons were decorated with badges, coats of arms, and other adornments for ornamental purpose. In medieval Florence, Italy, neighborhoods often gathered for meetings to discuss social and political topics. Each of the specific neighborhoods or districts would display their Gonfalons for recognition.
Throughout history, Gonfalons have been used significantly in religious ceremony, particularly by Christians in central Italy during the Middle Ages. The Gonfalons were made out of cloth or silk and elaborately decorated with colorful oils. They were works of art that employed several artisans and often took years to complete.
