Winter 2022
Dear Alverno Alumnae, I hope 2022 is off to a good start for you and your families. This Alumnae Magazine highlights many of the activities of the new year, introduces new employees (including Genevieve Ostrander, our new Director of Alumnae Relations and Advancement), and includes our Philanthropy Report for the 2020-21 school year. Alverno is in full swing even though we had to delay returning to school for one week due to the Omicron surge. It has been a busy school year with much hope and joy to be back on campus. Our theme this year is “Be Brave Enough to be the Light” for the Upper School and “Be the Light” for the Lower School, which was inspired by the inaugural poem by Amanda Gorman. All of our students and faculty have embraced the themes whole-heartedly as evidenced by the articles in this magazine. The effects of COVID-19 and the eighteen month lockdown was hard on the community, but it could not keep us down. Alverno has risen to the challenge as we embrace the opportunities that have been afforded us despite the pandemic. We are learning to be not only an all-girls’ Catholic high school, but now a TK-12 school with boys and girls in the lower grades. It has been exciting to see these changes at Alverno. There is a whole section on our Lower School in this magazine. We just celebrated the Winter Formal in the Villa in January, and this year we are looking forward to having the Gala on campus! More information is inside this edition. In spite of difficulties with shut downs and lack of access to many service opportunities, our students continue to amaze and awe us with their commitment to service. In this edition, you will read and see examples of our students from TK-12 working together for those in need and the disenfranchised during the Advent and Christmas season. We also reconnected with the charism of the Immaculate Heart Community through the film, Rebel Hearts, and were blessed to have our seniors hear from Sr. Susan Maloney, SNJM,the executor of Anita Caspary’s estate, as well as Dr. Sheila Briggs from USC who was in the film. Both speakers were extremely impressed with our seniors’ maturity and knowledge of their faith. In fact, a group of seniors has been working alongside Sr. Susan to catalog Anita Caspary’s collection and prepare the archives for their new home at USC. You will be able to read all about it. As you can see, Alverno continues to thrive and grow. We do keep all of the Alverno community far and wide, from 1960 to the present, in our daily prayers as we continue to battle the virus. We are blessed to be here each day, as our whole community learns to be flexible, kind, accepting, and loving during these unpredictable times. Please continue to keep Alverno in your prayers and enjoy the magazine! To health and well-being,
Julia Fanara Head of School WINTER 2022

Dear Alumnae, There is something really magical about stepping onto the campus of Alverno Heights Academy! Initially I was drawn to this campus because I thought it would be so nice to work in a tranquil setting overlooking mountains and trees, instead of the congested downtown area to which I had become accustomed. Little did I know that the serenity and beauty of this campus was not reserved for just the physical aesthetic, but is also enriched by the faculty, staff, students and culture. I soon became aware that this place beholds light, energy, love and is a nurturing place for students… and for me! Over these last six months, I have been so blessed by the Alverno experience, and have had the pleasure of meeting many alumnae who have been such an integral part of the legacy of this campus. My sincerest hope is to have the opportunity to meet many more of you and bring you all together in new ways to share in friendships and experiences while reminiscing and remembering cherished memories from Alverno. Please reach out to me! I am here to listen, to learn, and to work together with you to celebrate our Alverno Alumnae! Gratefully,
Genevieve Ostrander Director of Alumnae Relations and Advancement

Whiskey Bread Pudding 3 large eggs 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar ½ cup whipping cream ¼ cup whiskey 1 tablespoon banana extract 4 cups milk ¼ cup butter 1 (16 oz) stale French bread loaf (cut into 1-inch cubes) Stir together the first 6 ingredients in a large bowl.
Alverno’s Featured Recipe
Whiskey Bread Pudding Bread pudding was created in the 11th century as a means of necessity, but has since been transformed over hundreds of years to be a beloved treat that signifies comfort and warmth. Initially created in England, this was a means to utilize stale bread so as to not be wasteful at a time when food was scarce. It initially used ingredients that were readily available such as water and spices to reinvigorate crusty old bread to give it new life for consumption. Over the years, cream and eggs have become the staple ingredients giving it more of a custard like texture. In addition, home cooks all over the World have taken creative liberty such as incorporating ingredients such as walnuts, raisins, bananas, and as you will notice in this featured recipe, even whiskey to bring new life to this staple dish. Now served as a delicious dessert that can be topped with ice cream or sauce, it can also be served as a decadent dish at your next Sunday Brunch and topped with fresh strawberries. Enjoy! Do you have a favorite recipe you would like to share with fellow Alverno Alum? Please send your submissions to Genevieve Ostrander at gostrander@alvernoheights.org to be considered for our next issue of our Alumnae Magazine. Recipe submitted by Genevieve Ostrander, Director of Alumnae Relations and Advancement. 4

(NO NOT BOIL) Stir about one-fourth of hot milk mixture gradually into egg mixture; add to remaining hot milk mixture, stirring constantly. Field Trip Highlights
Anita Caspary Archives
Fourteen students from Alverno were recently treated to a special field trip where they visited the Anita Caspary Archives! Anita Caspary, along with 300 nuns, led the largest exodus of nuns from the confines of the pre-Vatican II church into the light of the post-Vatican church and formed the new Immaculate Heart Community as an ecumenical lay community. With a belief system rich in its charism, the Immaculate Heart Community believed in teaching young women to be strong, empowered females and to be advocates in social justice. It was instilled in girls that they could discover their own path and were free to be who they were meant to be. During the field trip, our students were able to inquire about Anita Caspary’s family life, education, personality, spirituality and the source of her courage and strength. They also learned the basics of archiving, listened to a live recording of her speaking, and were even able to view her First Communion dress. Anita Caspary’s leadership, along with the Immaculate Heart Community, is at the forefront of what we stand for at Alverno Heights Academy so it was really exciting that Alverno students were invited to her archives to learn more about her rich history and how it has influenced Alverno’s community. It was such an educational, inspiring day that our Alverno girls will surely never forget!
When I begin to see people trying to be free of all these things, then I kind of get a burning desire to free everyone.
— Anita Caspary

Charism is such an important part of the mission and teaching here at Alverno Heights Academy. Led by Katharine Guerrero, Head of Campus Ministry, our girls devoted countless hours to completing their Advent Service Projects with love and grace.
After a schoolwide Eucharist for Thanksgiving, presided over by Fr. Michael Cooper, both our Lower School and Upper School worked together to collect much needed supplies to give to our most vulnerable neighbors. It was such a special bonding moment for both schools as they worked together for the sake of serving others. 6
ALVERNO HEIGHTS ACADEMY ALUMNAE MAGAZINE
Some of Alverno’s service projects included: • Helping the Humane Society in San Gabriel Valley and Riverside • Gathering pajamas, personal hygiene products, and art supplies for the women of Alexandria House • Securing Hoodies for migrant farm workers in San Jose • Collecting board games for homeless families at El Nido • Putting together hygiene-filled backpacks for Eaton Canyon Foundation to be distributed to clients in homeless encampments.
At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.” — Mother Teresa
We are so proud of all of our students for their dedication to helping God’s children! WINTER 2022

When I think back on my time at Alverno, there are two things that I am most grateful for: the teachers who inspired my educational journey and my friends. All of the teachers I had at Alverno were dedicated not just to the subject they taught but to the students in their classroom. I learned so much from them about the world, about the importance of using our gifts to make a difference in that world, and their work ultimately inspired me to return back to Alverno.
Alverno has always been a special place for young women whether that was in 1960, 2005, or today. I am grateful for my classmates who made me laugh, who pushed me, and who have been my sisters and stood beside me on some of the brightest and darkest days of my life. Now back at Alverno, I have the blessing of growing that sisterhood with not just the women I work with who are alumnae, but also our current students as well.

I loved my time at Alverno as a student. I made amazing friends and was inspired by my teachers. We were empowered to be strong women and that is why we continue to teach today. Rocio Alcaraz ‘96 I loved being part of the National Art Honor Society and providing service opportunities for students. The teachers were always supportive and cheered you along the way. My favorite subject was English with Ms. Fanara and Ms Holmgren. Having Whoopi Goldberg (who was filming on campus) wave to me while reading inside the library is still my favorite story to tell!
ALVERNO HEIGHTS ACADEMY ALUMNAE MAGAZINE
Andrea Bertollini ‘91 I loved Ms. Garabedian, Ms. Tymon, Ms. Busser's dance class, senior steps, dances on the school terrace, off-campus lunch, break food from the cafeteria and the Jose's - Alcaraz and Santana. Sadly, a part of my weekly life was detention with Ms. Refner and disciplinary action in the library with Ms. Tylac.

What I loved Being an athlete!
Sue Behrens ’78
I really liked the beautiful, open campus and the freedom of the modular scheduling we had in the 70's, but the
thing that I loved best about attending Alverno is the life-long bond I made with friends who are still a major presence in my life, even if we
are separated by time or distance. I wasn't crazy about the idea of going to an all-girls school when my parents made that decision, but I believe not having boys around allowed us to be our true selves and is what strengthened our relationships.
I loved the chance to try all the new options, including cross country! I also loved my math classes with Ms. Van and learning Physics with Ms. Hawks!!
Ellen (Behrens) Hoffman ‘74
What I loved most about attending Alverno was (and is) the life-long friendships I established here. I keep in touch and get together often with fellow alumnae from the great class of '74!
Joanne (Larkin) Harabedian ‘69
My time at Alverno introduced me to many amazing women who have become lifelong friends.
Alverno also gave me the foundation to be brave and bold. Angela Terrazas ‘90 What I love most about my years at Alverno is the foundation that was laid, through teachers, friendships, and experiences, to help me grow into the independent, strong, and inquisitive woman that I am today. It is a true testament to the impact an alma mater has made on a student when they come back as an adult to teach at the school that helped them grow into the woman they are today. At Alverno Heights Academy we are always grateful for those who return to build on that legacy. This commitment to Alverno by our alumnae creates a bond that impacts our current students and contributes to the success of our entire school community. Here are our inspiring faculty and staff members who experienced an Alverno Heights Academy education: Deanne Carnighan, Andrea Bertollini ‘91, Rocio Alcaraz ‘96, Ellen Hoffman ‘74, Angela Terrazas ‘90, Sara McCarthy ‘05, Joanne Harabedian ‘69, Alex Grimstad ‘03, Jennifer Jukic, Susana Capra ‘04. Student Government
Alverno Heights Academy Upper School student leaders took their official oath of office at the Inauguration Ceremony on September 22, 2021 in the presence of their parents, teachers and fellow students. After last year’s virtual inaugural ceremony conducted via Zoom, it was empowering to see students take their oath in person. Rather than the traditional “Associated Student Body” model, Alverno Heights Academy’s government is modeled after the United States Government complete with a Alverno Constitution and citizens—the Alverno students. In 1987, after a trip to Washington, DC, the Alverno students who attended a program called Close Up returned home and wanted to see a change in the way student government was run. They didn’t feel that the typical student government model worked at Alverno. They wanted their government to become more inclusive and more representative, much like the United States government. Out of that dream the Alverno Student Union was born. With the help of their government moderators, the students wrote the Alverno Constitution. The Constitution called for a Supreme Court, a Congress, and an Executive Branch with a Cabinet. All Alverno students are considered to be citizens of the Alverno Union and of their own state as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors. That Constitution and Union is still thriving. The same spirit and enthusiasm continue to exist in the Government program. Inauguration honors those students who are continuing this 34-year tradition. Each state has its own Constitution as well as the following positions: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant-At-Arms, and assemblywomen. These young women are responsible for making decisions specific to their own state (class). The judicial branch includes two Supreme Court justices from each state and a Chief Justice. The Supreme Court’s Chief Justice, senior Maille Mansbridge, led today’s ceremony, which started with the oath of the ASU President Ava Villegas ‘22 and Vice-President Richelle Studer ‘22. “Alverno government is a core value of our school and for us all to have the honor to be such an important part of our community is something so special.” said WINTER 2022
ASU President, Ava Villegas. The Student Union President and Vice-President run as a ticket and elect a cabinet who acts as the governing body for all students. This year’s cabinet is made up of 17 members, including Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores, who each play a different role, such as Secretary of Athletics or Chief of Domestic Protocol. “Our unique student government program is a perfect example of the monumental role our young women play in our school community. Each of the young women elected has made not only a commitment to Alverno Heights Academy, but a commitment to her peers to be an effective, compassionate servant-leader,” said Head of School, Julia V. Fanara. “These values are basic tenets of the Alverno philosophy and our leadership program is just one of the ways Alverno empowers each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be.” Just as the United States begins a new presidential term with an Inauguration, so does Alverno! As student officers took their official oath of office they were reminded of the importance of being a leader. “Inauguration is a long standing tradition at Alverno, we are very proud of the role our students take as leaders on campus,” said Lisa Primero-Solano, Director of Activities. “During this ceremony students take the same oath that our elected United States government members take. This year we also included the singing of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful in the program, as well as our first Inaugural poet, junior Kiera Dean.” This formal ceremony concluded with an Inaugural Address from the ASU President Villegas “May we constantly grow, learn, and love and use that to be the best person we can be. When I look at the leaders in front of me, I have hope. Hope for a better future, a more fair future, and a future that uplifts and inspires. I know that this school year will be one filled with service, happiness, love, and of course great leadership. I’m so proud of all we have accomplished this past year and a half and I’m so excited for what is to come.” This group of Alverno Heights Academy Upper School leaders is sure to fill the school year with excitement and empowerment! 11
Bake-A-Change In September of 2021, Alverno Heights Academy launched the annual Bake-A-Change fundraiser. For the past nine years, Alverno has been an advocate for young girls’ education through Bake-A-Change. Campus Ministry educated the students on the importance of donating to girls’ education. Students were shocked to find out that over 132 million girls around the world are currently out of school, and that one girl under the age of 18 is married every two seconds. Of course, we also got the school community excited for our goal: to donate $1,000 to girls’ education. As we started the kick-off our two weeks of fundraising filled with drawings, a Zoom bake off, and daily bake sales (both on-campus, and after school drive-thrus), the Alverno community could not have been more thrilled to donate to two worthwhile organizations: She’s the First, and WriteGirl, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that offers a creative writing and mentoring program. With a 100% graduation rate of over 500 girls in the Los Angeles area, WriteGirl has helped establish these girls as female writers. This year, our theme was “to be brave enough to be light,” famously said by Amanda Gorman at President Biden’s Inauguration. As an alumna of WriteGirl, Ms. Gorman was able to explore her love of writing, which continues to help girls do the same.
“When a girl gets what she deserves, she is unstoppable.”

is kicking off our Annual Alumnae Campaign... ...and we are proud to announce that we will be raising funds to support our Scholarship Fund! Since 1960, Alverno Heights Academy has educated more than 4,500 girls throughout the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding communities. Our beloved campus has served as a second home to these young women — a place where they can learn, thrive, grow, and be ”empowered to be exactly the person they want to be.” Beginning in 2020, we have added TK-8th grade young women and men in our Alverno Lower School helping to extend the Alverno mission to a new generation of learners. Our philosophy at Alverno has always been to give our students the skills they need to be independent and strong, and to instill in them the importance of social justice and giving back to the community through service to others. We are dedicated to making an Alverno education available to all young women who have their hearts and minds set on attending our school, including the many students who would not normally be afforded these opportunities. This dedication and commitment to our students means that we must be willing to provide financial assistance when needed, and that is why our Scholarship Fund is so important! It bridges the financial gap for qualifying students, making the dream of an Alverno education a reality for so many outstanding young women! 24
Please join your Alverno classmates as we come together to meet our goal of raising $30,000 for the Scholarship Fund! We appreciate each and every one of you and the important role you play in Alverno’s history, as well as our future! Alverno Heights Academy is an amazing school and we are so proud to be able to share the Alverno experience with our students, thanks to the support of our committed alumnae who recognize the importance of supporting our Scholarship Fund! Sincerely,
Genevieve Ostrander Director of Alumnae Relations and Advancement ALVERNO HEIGHTS ACADEMY ALUMNAE MAGAZINE

In Loving Memory Donna Elliott ‘79 By Lucy Santillian Smith ‘79 As some of you have heard, our classmate Donna Elliott (DiLettera) made the journey to Heaven in October. Donna, Jane Anderson (Jindra), and I became the three musketeers during our freshmen year. Donna was the poster child of what good and kind is all about. So often we hear at eulogies "she never said a bad thing about anyone, willing to offer a helping hand and a radiant personality." I really tried to come up with something "clever," but this is Donna's testimony. Donna and Jane and I remained close after high school but then "adulthood" showed up, along with marriage and children. I saw Donna about three weeks before her passing. Just as she always was, funny, engaging, with lots of trips down memory lane. We had pizza with her husband, Doc, and her sons, Jack and Sean. A very special time that I will hold close to my heart. Yes, she had a health crisis, but as I drove away, I convinced myself she would be just fine, as it was unthinkable that she would leave us so soon. At times our plans don't line up with God's plans. One of the cliches - God needed another angel. Donna and Doc had a rock solid marriage. They loved each other, but in addition, they really liked each other. The comfort and love shown between them was very special. Donna leaves behind her husband Doc; her children Sean, Jenni, and Jack; and her siblings; Diana and David. Donna Jean, on behalf of the Alverno Class of 1979, we are grateful for the time we spent with you. We trust you will keep an eye on all of us.

So many lives have been lost to COVID and we know that many members of our Alverno family have been affected by this. There is no challenge greater to our hearts than the absence of someone special, and even though the grieving process never really goes away, support from others can help bear the weight of sadness. To those who have lost someone to COVID, your loved ones are not forgotten.
God ’s Healing Hand
To our brothers and sisters who have contracted and are suffering due to the Coronavirus Disease, we pray that God’s healing hand may rest upon you. To medical doctors, nurses and the supporting staff who are in the frontline of the fight against COVID-19, may the Good Lord sustain you and inspire you to render your life-saving services with due care, love and compassion. To all those who have lost their loved ones due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we convey our deepest sympathies. We pray that their souls, through God’s mercy, may rest in eternal peace. We pray that God may grant all bereaved families his consolation and strengthen their faith and hope in Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord. Amen. Prayer adapted from the 2020 Easter Message of the Catholic Bishops of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe
