This project is a gallery at King George’s Avenue at Jalan Besar that exhibits selected wood blocks and prints from Lim Mu Hue’s collection. The gallery explores the concept of the subtraction of spaces that stems from the analysis of woodblock printing technique and urban analysis of King’s George Avenue. The juxtaposition of solid and void spaces gives rise to the interplay of light and shadows. The different volumes and depth created for each space allows one to understand the context of the wood print in relation to space and programmatic intent. The experiential sequence of how one would experience a landscape themed print versus a communal themed print is what the gallery seeks to curate as you walk through each space.

The concept stems from the undulating surfaces of the woodblock once it has been carved out. The different volumes shows the depth the artist needed in order for the print to be distinct on paper. The depth of the carvings in relation to the print is what drove my design process.

The envisioned curatorial experiece was to capture the void spaces where the prints would be placed while the solid spaces are where the wood blocks would be placed. The compact linearity of the spaces is to allow users to be more intimate with the works especially so, because of its’ small scale.

The illustration maps out the different activities from day to night that happens at the back alley. I begun to understand that the back alley is the communal area of the workers there. It is an informal gathering space and an important urban fabric where people weave through to get from one point to another efficiently.

When you walk through the back alley, you follow a vertical axis and your visual tension is parallel to this axis (i.e focused at the end of the alley). However, what breaks this visual tension are the subtracted spaces, the recessed spaces, doors and windows. As seen in this mapping, there is a jarring difference in the level of visual engagement betwen Cavan Road and King’s George Avenue.

The subtracted spaces and the opacity of architectural elements (doors, windows) helps to increase one’s visual depth. One could see the activities going on beyond a blank wall. Therefore, the subtracted spaces and opacity of materials are what activates the back alley. It allows you to be an inclusive element of the back alley. This is the characteristic of the back alley of this particular site.

Based on the urban analysis, I wanted to bring increase the level of engagement that is clearly lacking at my chosen site through my proposed gallery. The gallery as an architectural intervention serves as a new urban node that connects the back alley to the main road. I abstracted the characteristics of the back alley and applied the tectonics of how users are visually and physically engaged.
