P O R T F O L I O
Hello, the name’s Alvin... And I’m a graphic and interactive designer. I’m motivated to create beautiful and enjoyable experiences for audiences. My specialities include; • UX/UI Design
• Publication
• Front-end Web Design
• Branding
My earliest interest in graphic design was sparked in high school, when I volunteered in the school’s monthly editorial pin-up. My first role; the humble task of finding and take cutouts of images from magazines that would compliment student’s articles. I blended these with doodles to make for some quirky collages. An overwhelming sense of ambition had taken hold of me to help create the most intriguing editorial, in cut-throat time. I was hungry to lend a hand or offer suggestions wherever needed. My enthusiasm shone through and eventually the team made me editor.
Little About Myself
The pin-up went ahead to draw the biggest and most consistent crowd for seven days straight. And just as we had decided to leave the editorial up for one day longer, it got robbed… It was such a satisfying response. That day I knew I wanted to be able to keep working on similar creative projects. Fast-forward to 2016, and I’ve graduated from Graphic and Creative advertising design at Curtin. My interest in publications has certainly held on. Meanwhile, my obsession with tech and video games have influenced my interest in interactive design.

NEXT PROJECT: THE LETTER – PUBLICATION
01 JustAuto Driving School My driving instructor approached me to design and develop a low cost website for her new JustAuto driving school that she’d setup with her partner. It’d be inapproriate to simply create a website, when no branding had been done. Inspiration for the branding was drawn from sports brands and popular car shows to present JustAuto, and driving, as enjoyable. At the same time, it needed to communicate professionalism and safety to parents looking for a suitable driving school for their teens.

The black and white images, coupled with bold condensed type, lend JustAuto an association with energetic sports brands. The vivid colour scheme further helps the brand and driving seem more lively and exicting to any nervous learners or parents.

NEXT PROJECT: EBB & FLOW – E-COMMERCE
02 The Letter The Letter is a concept redesign for the Grok Magazine – the Curtin student guild magazine. The aim was to rejuvenate the design of the existing magazine, leading to increased readership. The final solution involved a name-change to shake off any negative associations towards the present Grok magazine. In addition, vibrant colours and experimental layouts were used to lend the magazine playfulness and youth.

NEXT PROJECT: WEST AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORT – PUBLICATION
03 Ebb and Flow Ebb & Flow is a conceptual love child between some of my main design interests – print and web. Ebb & flow explores water-side cities and their lifestyles. The deliverable is an online store for the brand.

NEXT PROJECT: THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
04 West Australian Museum – Annual Report As the Western Australian Museum undergoes a redevelopment of their Perth Museum, I tasked myself with creating an annual report that presented the museum in a new light. Key driving factors behind the design were the museum’s goals to attract a larger international audience, while still being valued by Western Australians. The final design solution resulted in a rebrand that embodies an electric colour-scheme and geometric shapes to W the brand.

Artistic impressions of the future museum bear a fair resemblance to the abstract design of the Perth Arena. Hence the rebranding of the Museum needed to bear similarities with the design of the upcoming development, through geometric shapes. There’s a strong appreciation for Aboriginal heritage in Western Australia. Subtle dotted patterns in the design reflect this. Meanwhile the electric blue – from the WA state flag, and fiery red – from the Kimberly region, bring even more Western Australian elements onto the international stage.
