• Forgive us Gaza, the genocide you are subject to has turned into a global collective partnership, in which some participate through their support, and others participate through their silence and inaction.

• Forgive us Gaza, those who support the genocide and those who are silent are equal, those who are suffering of weakness and delusion, they have become two sides of the same coin.

• Forgive us Gaza, for every Arab or Islamic position that did not exceed the statements of condemnation and criticism, and for every Western and global position that did not exceed the statements of (feeling anxious and sorry) and the heinous decorative essays that shows on their ugly faces and tongues.

• Forgive us Gaza, most Western leaders support the occupation in order to continue the war of genocide, while most Arab leaders offer only sympathy to the war of genocide.

• Forgive us Gaza, your people are not the only ones who are dying, but the consciences of many world leaders and others have died, and they have become weak because of their shameful positions that depend on interests and based on greed, and because of their projects based on the policy of domination and expansion at the expense of human life, freedom, dignity and rights and at the expense of moral principles and human values.

• Forgive us Gaza, your people life does not resemble the lives of these people, nor does your death resemble their death. You live honourable and die as cherished martyrs, while these people live humiliated in front of their interest, driven by materialistic world, submissive to group pressure and submissive to what they order them, weak against the media, lifeless bodies in the face of the voices of conscience and morals.

• Forgive us Gaza, your honourable brothers in the Arab world could not support you, perhaps because they are still living the trauma of oppression, abuse, injustice and torture that they were subjected to in the largest massacre of the Arab peoples after the Arab Spring, committed by all those who are now participating in the war of genocide against you.

• Forgive us Gaza, your children are thirsty for water because decision- makers in the world are shameless, lack conscience, and are thirsty for blood and destruction.

• Forgive us Gaza, your children are suffering from hunger because of the moral defect that the enemies suffer from that prompted them to practice the policy of starvation against the people of Gaza, the policy of intimidation against the people of the West Bank, and the subjugations of the remaining Arab leaders.

• Forgive us Gaza, the cowards did not understand that the hungry are not the ones who have lost water and food, but the hungry are the ones who lost their honour and the taste of dignity!

• Forgive us Gaza, they threw missiles and rockets at you while they threw themselves down in the dust bin of history.

• Forgive us Gaza, the world has known the true meaning of women’s freedom through the free, honourable and courageous Palestinian women, who have become an exemplary lesson of patience and perseverance, where they participate along with men in all fields of struggle for freedom and the restoration of rights, armed with patience, endurance and adorned with strength and pride.

• Forgive us Gaza, the honourable people in the West have reverted to their common sense of humanity, which rejects killing, hates injustice, and cannot see the blood and tears of children.

• Forgive us Gaza, the more criminal Netanyahu becomes, the more his supporters and accomplices will whizz around his tail.

• Forgive us Gaza, the more brutal the Israeli army is against unarmed civilians, the more the world conscience grew sadder in its grave.

• Forgive us Gaza, everyone is watching the hissing of snakes in the Security Council and in international forums, as they raise their heads and raise their voices, rejecting the end of a genocide against innocent civilians, without anyone being able to stop their poison and weapons that are consuming the bodies of children.

• Forgive us Gaza. more than six months of genocide, on live television, were unable to awaken the conscience of a single leader

or official. There is a huge difference between these leaders and Al-Mu’tasim, who mobilised an army and declared a war for the dignity of a woman. It took only one woman for him to declare war for her right. She did not need to say more than one word (Oh, Mutasimah) for the army to move and dignity to be restored.

• Forgive us Gaza, for the absurdity of their shows as they drop aid from the air while they do not want the land crossings to open, the genocide to stop and the military aid to be cut off.

• Forgive us Gaza, we have seen Negus of Abyssinia in the efficiency and help of South Africa, and we did not see it in our people. When the companions, may God be pleased with them, were subjected to injustice and harm at the hands of their people from Bani Quraish, they were welcomed by a king in the land of Abyssinia (in East Africa) who did not oppress anyone. Now, when Gaza is getting betrayed by its people, they were supported and stood by the state of South Africa, which could not bear to see injustice again.

• Forgive us Gaza, it is confusing to us, we do not know whether we live in a jungle or the jungle lives in us?! Where human monsters were able to control the fate of peoples. Monsters who do not relate to humanity except by name! Monsters who committed dozens of massacres around the world, from the massacre of Srebrenica in Bosnia to the massacres of Chechnya, Syria, Iraq, Myanmar, Sudan, Africa, the massacres of the Arab Spring and many more others, finally, to the massacres in Gaza that are committed every day.

• Forgive us Gaza, you are facing an enemy who has lost all conscience and morals, a loser who has lost dignity and honour, a coward who has lost nobility and pride.

Finally, with the end of the blessed month of Ramadan, we say sorry to the people of Gaza, when we see pictures of the luxurious Ramadan tables and the extravagance, indulging ostentation and indifference without shame from the children of Gaza who are starving and dying of thirst, in a show that has no modesty, no shame and devoid of any meanings of pride and human sense. What these people do not know is that celebrating in the midst of tragedy is a tragedy itself.

Eid al-Fitr is a special time for Muslims all over the world. Eid is more than just a day on the calendar; it’s like a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of unity and generosity. These threads come together at three levels: individual, family, and community.

Let’s dive into the individual experience of Eid. Picture this: after a whole month of fasting, praying, and reflecting during Ramadan, Eid arrives like a breath of fresh air. It’s a time for Muslims to feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for completing the month-long spiritual journey. Whether you’re in a bustling city or a quiet town, the feeling is no less profound.

Families play a huge role in making Eid extra special. Think about it –gathering around the dining table, sharing delicious food, exchanging heartfelt gifts, and praying together. In some places, you’ll see families getting all decked out in new clothes and decorating their homes with colourful lights and festive decorations. It’s like a mini-fiesta right in your living room! And even if you’re in a place where Muslims are

fewer, the love and warmth between family members make Eid just as magical.

But Eid isn’t just about individuals and families; it’s also about coming together as a community. Imagine going for prayers to the mosque, and then stepping out onto the streets on Eid morning and seeing your neighbourhood come alive with the buzz of excitement. Mosques overflow with worshippers, markets bustle with activity, and people greet each other with smiles and hugs. It’s like one big happy family reunion, where everyone is welcome and no one is left out. Even in places where Muslims are fewer, communities find creative ways to celebrate together, such as organizing communal prayers and sharing meals with neighbours. You see, Eid is like a beautiful mosaic made up of individual experiences, family traditions, and communal gatherings. Each piece adds its own unique colour and texture to the tapestry of unity and generosity. No matter where you are in the world, the spirit of Eid remains the same – a time to spread kindness, show gratitude, and strengthen bonds of friendship and

love.

For many Muslims, Eid is a time of deep personal reflection. It’s a moment to look back on the past month, to cherish the moments of prayer and self-discipline, and to express gratitude for the blessings received. And let’s not forget the excitement of getting dressed in new clothes, ready to celebrate with family and friends. In places where Muslims are fewer in number, this personal reflection may feel even more profound, as individuals navigate their faith amidst a diverse cultural landscape.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Eid is the spirit of generosity that permeates throughout the community. From giving to charity to hosting feasts for friends and neighbours, Muslims demonstrate their commitment to helping those in need and spreading kindness and compassion. Even in Muslim-minority communities, where celebrations may be smaller in scale, the sense of community and generosity remains strong as individuals come together to support one another and celebrate their shared faith.

Eid al-Fitr is truly a tapestry of unity and generosity, woven together by the threads of individual reflection, family bonding, and community spirit. It doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating in a bustling city or a quiet town, surrounded by family or friends, the essence of Eid remains the same: a time to come together and count our blessings. As Muslims around the world welcome Eid al-Fitr, let’s remember to embrace the spirit of unity and generosity. Whether you’re spending Eid with your family, your friends, or your community, let’s make beautiful memories together. “We found a gap in the market, we noticed that a lot of our elderly people in our community, predominantly middle Eastern, needed services in-home. Back then I realised there was no ethnic multicultural provider that’s providing this service to the elderly population. So that’s why we thought this was a good opportunity to provide services for our community,” Al Ebrahimi said. He established the aged care business while completing a Master of Optometry at the University of Melbourne, but his passion has always been geared towards health care and giving back to the community. What piqued his interest in aged care was noticing how well his grandparents were cared for by his aunts and uncles back home in Iraq, and wondered if his parents would receive the same level of care.

“In Australia, considering everyone is busy, everyone is working or studying, who’s going to take care of my parents? That realisation of my grandparents is what sparked my interest [in aged care],” Al Ebrahimi said.

People First Healthcare primarily offer aged care services as well as disability services. They are also a registered NDIS provider based in Melbourne and Sydney.

“These people are at the end of life, and they do need the services inside their home; allied health, oneon-one support services with a carer

and so on.”

Al Ebrahimi said that people seem to be conflating NDIS services with what People First Healthcare offers when that is not the case. NDIS do not offer services for those over the age of 65.

“If you’re over the age of 65, you can access in-home services...like personal care, cleaning, transport, going to GP, allied health services which is accessed through my aged care. We are a registered home care package provider, and we can provide these services to them,” Al Ebrahimi said.

These services are 100 percent government funded with a means test for self-funded retirees. People First Healthcare is also regulated by the government where they manage the funding and services to clients who choose to go with them.

“It costs the government more money when someone lives in a residential aged care. They want you to live longer at home and get the services you need at home. The government doesn’t want to see you in hospital because every time you rock up to the emergency department, it costs the government a thousand or two thousand dollars,” Al Ebrahimi said.

He mentioned that the government finds it safer for the elderly to remain at home with the necessary care provided to them, and less of a burden on hospitals.

Picture this.

You are home alone, bored out of your wits. Your son and daughter-in-law have left for work, the grandkids are in school and won’t be back until after soccer practice. The neighbour whom you small talk with just left to visit his son in the country.

You’ve been on a channel surfing frenzy for the past two hours.

Does this sound familiar? Well, if it does, help may just be around the corner, or literally at your doorstep.

Identifying a loophole in the system where care services weren’t offered to marginalised communities over the age of 65, Doctor Mohammed Al Ebrahimi took things into his own hands and established People First Healthcare in 2017.

Healthcare’s clientele are middle Eastern Christians. Al Ebrahimi believes this is due to many ageing Muslims relying on mosques or their busy children and leave things to the last minute when there is help, free of charge, from the services his aged care provides.

Another quandary within the Muslim community is where many tend

to congregate amongst their own resulting in minimal interactions with other Muslim communities, limiting their understanding and awareness of each other’s cultures.

“Do we have a senior citizens club for our elderly Muslim community? That’s the first question you should

ask. And this is the service we can provide. We do community events, outings to the zoo, to the park. Even people who are not part of the group are welcome to come in,” Al Ebrahimi said.

“We’ve had Iftar nights for our clients where they have a sense of belonging and form those social networks when meeting others.” Al Ebrahimi said that a lot of elderly people live in isolation and while the mosque is a commonplace to interact with others, it is also good to be part of other social surroundings and activities.

“The goal is to have a one-stop-shop of all the services of its kind...what we’re trying to do is provide aged care and disability services within the community to keep them living as long as they can and safely. We have all the [needful] services we can offer them.”

As Australia is an ageing population, these costless services are essential, especially for marginalised communities.

“You’re working with somebody who’s been in the business for the last eight years and with a medical background. So you can trust that you’ll be getting quality care at home.”

Al Ebrahimi is a finalist for the Spirit Super Connecting Communities Award as part of the 2024 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards.

The peak body for aged and community care providers in Australia welcomes the opportunity to provide continued input into the creation of the new Aged Care Act after confirmation the commencement date has been changed.

The peak body for aged and community care providers in Australia welcomes the opportunity to provide continued input into the creation of the new Aged Care Act after confirmation the commencement date has been changed.

The new Aged Care Act was slated to come into effect from 1 July 2024. However, the Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells today announced the Government is considering the extensive feedback provided by the sector and the community, in

order to refine and finalise the draft legislation before it is introduced to Parliament. The Government will now update the commencement date of the legislation following a review of feedback received.

ACCPA CEO Tom Symondson said the new Aged Care Act was pivotal to the transformation of aged care and the sector’s ability to deliver the care we all want to see for older Australians.

“The new Aged Care Act was a fundamental recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and welcomed by our members,” he said.

“This is a chance to usher in a new era to reform our aged care system. So, we need to make sure that the legislation, which will likely govern the aged care sector for the next 30 years, is not rushed. We need to get this right.

“We of course want to see the legislation passed and implemented as soon as practical. But this allows more time to engage meaningfully with older people, the community, the sector and other stakeholders. It is far more important that the legislation and associated requirements be passed when it is ready, than passed to meet the 1 July date.”

New legislation, with an impact of the magnitude of the new Aged Care Act, needs to be clearly articulated and achievable.

“We have been in ongoing and constructive discussions with the Government around transition timeframes, so that the sector has the time they need to plan for the new requirements under the Act. This will ensure the sector can implement the reforms and meet the expectations of the community.”

While the commencement date is to be confirmed by Government ahead of the introduction of the Bill to Parliament, the timing of the transition of new reforms within the Act is also critical.

“We are calling for at least 6 to 12 months transition from the time at which all information is available, including the finalised Act, Rules, guidance and education materials.

“A staged approach to implementation of these new reforms should also be adopted so providers can effectively manage change within their organisations, their workforce and engage with their residents and care recipients.”

“Older Australians deserve nothing less than the confidence that Australia will get this right.”

The latest research shows that in Australia in 2023, over 301,000 scam reports were filed, marking a 26 percent increase from the previous year, with financial losses surpassing $477 million.

Retail and social media scams are the most common.

‘Follow the GWS rule: Google, website, social media.

• Before making a purchase, remember to Google the business, check the website’s spelling, and verify the retailer’s social media handles

• Flash sales and “limited-time offers” can be enticing, but they’re also tactics scammers use to rush your decision-making

• Online reviews can be a goldmine of information, but not all are genuine

• Look for reviews on reputable platforms like Google and Trustpilot, and be wary of those with excessive punctuation or emojis

• If anything about the retail site raises red flags, it’s better to miss a deal than to lose your money to scammers

• Unsure about a deal? Consult a friend or family member. A fresh perspective can help identify potential scams you might have overlooked

• If you suspect you’ve been scammed, immediately report it to Scamwatch and contact your bank or financial institution

“Consumers are very good at raising the alarm bells online, so check online and scroll through reviews on reputable platforms like Google and Trustpilot to make sure you are dealing with a reputable company,” Siriwardhane said.

“Platforms like Trustpilot work with the community to be as secure and trustworthy as possible, so they encourage all their reviewers to verify their identity and businesses.

“Another tip that might indicate that a review is not reliable is if they use a lot of exclamation marks or use a lot of emoticons and emojis. This is a possible indication that the review is not genuine and has been auto generated.”

If you are in doubt, don’t buy

“If there is any reason for you to doubt the authenticity of a retail site, then don’t go ahead with the transaction. Better to be safe than sorry! It’s better to lose out on a sale than to get scammed. You might have lost out on some savings but at least you didn’t get scammed out of your money altogether,” Siriwardhane pointed out.

“Also, why not get a second opinion? If you see something that’s caught your interest but you’re not sure, just ask a friend to have a look as well. Getting a second opinion can be useful too.”

What to do if you get scammed

“These days, scammers use all sorts of ways to get us, through email, text messages, phone calls and social media. It’s no wonder that unbeknownst to us, we might get scammed. If you happen to get scammed, then I urge you to immediately stop all contact with the suspected scammers and make a report to Scamwatch,” Siriwardhane said.

“You should also contact your bank or financial institution if you have provided any financial details or if you’ve recently made a transaction or money transfer. Unfortunately, it’s not likely that you’ll get your money back if you were scammed so it’s important to really protect yourself from harm.”

Scam retail sites normally have a different domain extension or a slight difference in the website spelling. “Putting that time pressure on you is a marketing technique but don’t fall for it. Another popular trick is putting fake data like ‘only 10 left in stock’ or ‘in 15 other carts’ to make you think that you need to act quickly if you want to get your item. Scammers can easily set up fake data, fake websites, fake profiles, fake ads and fake reviews. They even pose as businesses you think you can trust.

“So, what are some warning signs? Check if the online seller has terms and conditions, an ABN or a privacy policy on their website. Sometimes you can get an invoice for a product or service you haven’t bought or used.”

WHAT IS EID AL-FITR?

Eid al-Fitr means “festival of breaking the fast” and marks the end of Ramadan.

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days in all Muslim-majority countries.

HOW IS THE START OF EID DETERMINED?

Like Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr begins with the sighting of the crescent moon (a day after the new moon), so Muslims have to wait until the evening before Eid to verify its date.

If the crescent moon is not visible, Ramadan continues for another day. Because it is a lunar event, the date of Eid changes annually on the Gregorian calendar and varies from country to country depending on geographical location.

To declare the start of Eid, Muslim-majority countries depend on the testimonies of local moon sighters. The local religious authorities then announce when Eid will be taking place.

The Year 6 students have recently returned from an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage. The Australian Government

recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to the school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Along with the many mandatory

educational programs and nonmandatory (but enjoyable) activities, the students learnt the most about themselves and how they would fare away from the comfort, stability, and predictable environment back home.

The mandatory educational programs included:

Parliament House – A highlight of our trip. We toured the Senate and House of Representatives and were engaged in activities via Parliamentary Education Office.

Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), National Electorate Education Centre (NEEC), The Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, National Gallery of Australia.

The non-mandatory programs included:

Questacon, Australian Institute of Sport, Anzac Parade, Mount Ainslie Lookout, National Arboretum Canberra, iPlay.

NEW GRANT TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS AND BOOST SUSTAINABILITY IN COMMERCIAL FISHING

A new grant aimed at reducing emissions in Australia’s commercial fishing sector by 30 percent has been announced by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) in collaboration with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

Startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are eligible to apply for a competitive grant of up to $100,000 and projects that demonstrate feasibility, may further apply for a grant of up to $1 million to develop a proof of concept.

The initiative, known as the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII), will foster innovative solutions to enhance the energy efficiency of Australia’s commercial fishing sector. This will

be achieved through the adoption of renewable energy sources and lowemission technologies, which have the potential to revolutionise Australia’s fishing fleets and related services.

By adopting energyefficient technologies, the fishing sector can reduce carbon emissions, benefit from cost savings and position itself to capitalise on the growing market for sustainably sourced seafood.

FRDC Managing Director, Dr Patrick Hone, believes there’s a growing market for sustainably sourced seafood and the BRII will help deliver better outcomes for all.

“The cost of doing business is increasing. Innovations to help reduce our carbon emissions, reduce costs and improve our energy and production efficiency will

benefit the environment and make Australia’s seafood sector worldleading economically,” Dr Hone said.

Successful applicants will receive funding from DISR and be connected to industry experts and stakeholders by FRDC, to accelerate the implementation of their solutions.

HOW DO MUSLIMS CELEBRATE EID?

Muslims across the world begin Eid celebrations by partaking in communal dawn prayers, followed by a short sermon. While in some countries the prayers take place in mosques or large halls, in many countries it is also held in the open.

People congratulate one another as they head home after Eid prayers. They spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house. Children, dressed in new clothes, are offered gifts and money to celebrate the joyous occasion.

This is preceded by the giving of alms to the poor, or zakat, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is common for the capitals of Muslim-majority countries to decorate their streets with festive lights and hold carnivals to commemorate the end of the holy month.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day. These foods range from special biscuits and bread to cakes and puddings. On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, voluntary fasting is not allowed as Muslims are encouraged to feast and celebrate the completion of a month of worship and abstinence from food.

Charity is a pillar of the Islamic faith and what better way to be charitable than to give back to the community.

The Annual school Iftar dinners for Ramadan 2024 have taken place with a number of new and also familiar schools participating attracting hundreds of guests across Western and South West Sydney. The dinners, sponsored by Human Appeal Australia have been a consistent initiative run by the organization as a bid to establish social ties and connections amongst members of the broader community.

CHESTER HILL HIGH SCHOOL

The first school and event for this year was held at was Chester Hill High School on March 20, hosting their largest Iftar dinner yet with over 300 guests. Crowds of parents, students and school staff members gathered in the buzzing hall lining the rows of tables throughout the hall.

The event kicked off with speeches from the Principal and associated staff who helped organise the event. HAA representatives also presented a speech and video highlighting the importance of community engagement and allowing for

opportunities like this to bring together people from different backgrounds around one table as a single entity.

“It was wonderful, especially during Harmony Week, to recognize and share such a significant occasion for so many students and staff” Chester Hill High School expressed on social media.

Among other school Iftars that week was at the Australian International Academy in Kellyville where the institution hosted a primary school Iftar dinner. The school organised the Iftar for year 5 & 6 students with more than 145 guests attending including staff.

Bankstown Girls High School have brought back Ramadan School Iftars to their community in 2024. Upon becoming school Principal in 2019, Suada Bilali introduced this incentive to Bankstown Girl’s High School for the first time that year before it was halted due to the Covid-19 outbreak the following year and the restrictions it brought. This year however, the community Iftar dinner has made a comeback with hundreds of guests gathering to share a meal in the school hall including school students, parents, sponsors and school staff. The hall was adorned with Ramadan themed

decorations which elevated the spiritual and cultural meaning of the event, alongside a wide variety of food options available for guests.

Iftar this year garnered over an incredible 350 guests including students and parents, teachers and a local counsellor. The night commenced with a Quran recitation before students were invited to share their experiences with Ramadan and what it means for them, inciting a warm sense of engagement and unity.

BERALA PUBLIC SCHOOL

It was a special Ramadan for Berala Public School as they organised their very first Iftar dinner for their school community, garnering a spectacular attendance.

“We had a hugely successful evening with 416 people attending, well beyond our expectations when we first began the planning of our first Iftar event” said Ashleigh Davis, Deputy Principal at Berala Public School.

The evening began with a video presentation of Human Appeal Australia as sponsors before the school Principal gave an address, followed by other guest speakers. The call to prayer was then announced before the commencement of the dinner service.

This event was the first of its kind at the school and was an effective call to highlight communal values, diversity and harmony within the region. “It was an incredible evening and we look forward to continuing for years to come” said Ms Davis.

BIRRONG BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

It was a big night for Birrong Boys High School on March 26 as they hosted their annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner, organised by Community Liaisons Officer Souhair Afiouny Harris. Birrong Boys High School has had a consistent role in this initiative for the past years with Human Appeal Australia having sponsored previous events for them.

The venue was adorned with gold Ramadan themed decorations as 280 guests attended alongside various public figures who took to the stage to express their gratitude and support for the night.

Lynda Voltz, Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly was one of the notable political figures to attend, who happens to be a local alumni at Birrong Girls High School.

Billy Dib, former professional boxer and brother of MP Jihad Dib, was one of the special guests to have attended the Iftar. Fellow sportsman and former professional NRL footballer Hazem El Masri was also present to break their fasts with the Muslim community of Birrong brought together during this special occasion.

The Human Appeal Representative shared a speech with the guests, shining light on the significance of charity in Ramadan as well as sharing a prayer for those suffering distressing circumstances overseas.

The final weeks of Ramadan School Iftar dinners sponsored by Human Appeal Australia were once again a success with hundreds of more people across Sydney gathering to break their fasts as close knitted communities.

Canley Vale High School hosted their first ever Iftar dinner on 4th April, inaugurating a new found effort in accentuating the sense of cultural unity in the school and celebrating their diversity.

This has been a longstanding initiative at this major school, dating back to many years prior and continues to be a means to bring the community together and highlight the increasing multiculturalism of Burwood and surrounding suburbs.

It was an evening full of good food, raffle prizes and excitement at McCallums Hill Public School last month who, much like other schools, also hosted their very first Ramadan Iftar dinner. The night commenced with a warm and welcoming speech from the Principal, before the time to break the fast settled in.

“As we come together to break our fast tonight, let us remember the importance of empathy and compassion” Principal of the school, Ms Markovski addressed the guests. “Ramadan is a time of spiritual renewal and self-reflection. Let us stake this opportunity to reflect on our blessings, remember those less fortunate and strive to make a positive difference in the world.”

The elated guests, communal engagement, Ramadan themed adornments and overall atmosphere proved the event a huge success, with plans already generating to continue similar initiatives in the future within the school.

AUSTRAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Austral Public School has joined the initiative for the first time as well but with a twist. The principal of the school organised for them to create Iftar packs in which were distributed amongst the kids. This was done as a method of educating and enlightening the kids about the month of Ramadan, as well as giving kids who are already participating in the holy month an opportunity to do so together with their friends and classmates.

The packs were distributed with a visit from Orphan Hamoudi, Human Appeal’s very own mascot as an incentive to entertain the kids and ensure they are engaged with the initiative.

THE COMMUNITY’S HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS OF A MUSLIM PUBLIC FIGURE

The intention behind the publication of this article is to highlight some key traits of Muslim community leaders.

To begin with, leadership is the position of trust from the Islamic perspective.

A public figure is openminded, humble, receptive to ideas and suggestions, honest in intention, open to constructive criticism, and democratic.

He represents the people or a community. Hence, the interest of the community is above his own. Personal gain is not his goal. Popularity and name are not what he is after.

He loves to consult others in every matter concerning common interests before reaching a conclusion. All decisions made by him on matters, in particular,

sensitive and important ones about the community, are paramount to reflect the people’s aspirations and desires. This is in line with the Quranic guidance as Allah the Almighty states in chapter Ash-Shura, verse: 38:

The exegesis of the verse is, “Among the qualities of the true believers is, all their collective concerns are determined by consultation among themselves.” (42:38)

Elsewhere, He states:

The exegesis of the verse is, “And consult the people whom you are administering their affairs in all matters of public concern, then, when you have decided upon a course of action, place your trust in Allah, then, carry out your plan.” (3:159)

Such is the divine guidance upon the public figures to attain the aspired goal of a harmonious relationship between the leader and the led.

Residing in a democratic society such as Australia requires democratic tendencies reflected in the actions of our public figures. This is what we crave to pass down to our young generations as a legacy.

Moving from general to specific, I am supportive of the social activities being carried out by Sheikh Shadi. However, I would like to call upon him to sit back and reflect upon some preferences that he has given priority. This may run against the expectations of the people whom he is representing which may then result in their displeasure towards him. More specifically, I assume

that some members of the Muslim community have been displeased with him because they feel he had prioritised his close working relationship with the government over truly voicing the community’s concerns to the government for fear of jeopardising his government relationships. Feeling betrayed is reflected in their disappointment in his leadership over them. I call upon him to be more sensitive to the voice of the community whom he represents.

It must not come across the minds of the public figures that they are untouchable. We are only human beings with many shortcomings and imperfections. Accordingly, we should establish and respect Islamic tradition and Quranic emphasis on accountability (muhasabah).

Homes across CanterburyBankstown will light up this Eid as Council calls on residents to get involved in its first ever Eid lights competition.

City of Canterbury Bankstown is looking to find the best decorated homes in each of the City’s five wards, with prizes of up to $500 on offer for the most outstanding displays.

A Council spokesperson said over the coming weeks, the community will be celebrating religious holidays and spiritual events such as Ramadan,

Easter and Eid.

“It’s an important time for many in our community as they reflect and embrace the significance of this holy period,” the spokesperson said.

“We’re proud of the diverse cultures in our City and the vibrancy that they create.

“To mark this year’s Eid, we’re holding a lights competition, similar to the competition held over the Christmas holiday period.”

The spokesperson encouraged

everyone to decorate and showcase their homes to the rest of Sydney.

“It’s not just about the lights, it’s about being creative and engaging.”

Residents decorating their homes to mark the season can enter the competition by submitting a picture of their display to Council’s website by Wednesday 10 April, Noon.

All eligible entries will then be displayed on Council’s website, where the community can vote for their favourite display. Voting will open on

Thursday 11 April, 9am, and close on Wednesday 17 April, 9am.

Winners will receive a $500 gift card and runners up will receive a $200 gift card. Winners will be announced on Thursday 18 April via Council’s website and social media.

ISAA EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIPS RETREAT 2024: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA

networking and collaboration, to shape the future of Islamic education in Australia.

ISAA President Mr. Abdullah Khan expressed his delight at the highly productive outcomes of the retreat, emphasizing the invaluable contributions of the delegates. “These two days have not only fostered collaboration and networking but have set in motion initiatives that will have a lasting impact on Islamic education,” Mr. Abdullah remarked.

One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of an upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ISAA and the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA). This collaboration aims to introduce mentorship programs for year 10 and 11 students, guiding them towards careers in medicine. Mr. Khan described this initiative as, “A reflection of ISAA’s commitment to nurturing the next generation towards impactful professions.”

Abdullah Khan made the announcement for nominations to form state-based ISAA subcommittees and ISAA Umbrella Groups as an opportunity to proactively contribute to the advancement of Islamic education at a state and national level.

Mr. Sam Halbouni, Principal at Unity Grammar and Mr. Dario Hawat, Head of Community Experience,

presented this initiative, highlighting its potential to strengthen collective efforts and enhance educational quality.

Mr. Fazeel Arain, Principal of Al Siraat College, Mr, Osman Karolia, Principal of Arkana College, and Mr Nabeil Allam, an external consultant facilitated the planning session outlining ISAA’s vision for the future, focusing on innovative initiatives to elevate the quality of education in Islamic schools. The active involvement of members in shaping this strategy was underscored as pivotal for navigating the path forward.

Spenser, Director Policy of Christian Schools Australia, as a special guest. His informative session on legislative landscapes provided valuable insights into prospective changes that may impact faith-based schools, enriching the discussions.

Almost another Ramadan has passed, can you believe it? This month has been focused on providing educational resources with the theme of ‘Let’s Get Zakat Right’, to empower future generations with the knowledge of Zakat. Check out https://www.nzf.org.

Additionally, for many years now, Zakat Master Classes have been facilitated throughout various masajid and organisations alongside having pop-up stalls in several shopping centres. However, one thing was different this year. In partnership with El Rahman, the National Zakat Foundation hosted the families and the Palestinians who arrived in Australia post-October 7th for iftar in Sydney and Melbourne on the 22nd of March. The successful evening involved

family reunions and provided the Palestinians with a sense of belonging and community. In addition, the Hearts for Palestine program has operated for the last six months. The Hearts for Palestine program continues to ensure the Palestinians have a swift resettlement in Australia. This entails providing them with housing, groceries, clothing, financial support, medical support services and much more. Furthermore, in January 2024, we provided you with an update that over $120,000 in Zakat had been distributed. Fastforward three months, this number has now more than tripled. leader of the household, typically the husband. The first purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is a means of compensation for any shortcomings in one’s actions throughout Ramadan. In addition, the other purpose is to spread love and happiness among the community, particularly those who are poor and needy.

BLESSED BONDS: A MEDICAL STUDENT’S TALE OF SISTERHOOD AND SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT IN UMRAH

Allah invited me to perform Umrah with a group of female medical students from all around the world. Alhamdulillah, it was the most blessed experience I have ever had!

When I made my New Year’s resolutions at the start of this year, I asked myself what my one biggest wish for this year was, and immediately, my heart answered, “Umrah”. As I wrote it on my list, I wondered how that would materialise, but I reminded myself that all I need to do is make a sincere intention, and then Allah will create a way. A few weeks later, I found out from the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) that the Islamic Medical Association in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (IMAKSA)/World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) are organising and hosting their 13th Umrah program for medical

students as nominated by Islamic Medical Associations (IMAs) and Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA). My immediate thought was, “Allah is creating the way”!

For those unfamiliar with these organisations, AIMA and IMAKSA are national organisations that aim to unite Muslim healthcare to serve humanity in Australia and Saudi Arabia, respectively. FIMA aims to do the same on a global level. I have been a student member of AIMA, a non-profit health promotion

charity, for several years. I have participated in many volunteer and community health promotion initiatives that AIMA runs in Australia. I have been a student representative for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), coordinating various initiatives and linking other Muslim medical and allied health students in ACT with AIMA. I applied to the program via the expression of interest process to AIMA two days later. AIMA accepted me into the program, and they nominated me to FIMA for the Umrah

program. One week later, I was on a plane travelling to perform Umrah. Alhamdulillah!

As soon as I saw the Kaaba, tears started rolling down my face. I forgot about my long list of duas, and all I could repeatedly ask for was forgiveness and Jannah for myself, my loved ones and the entire ummah. It put into perspective what truly matters and what I should strive for through my medical career and all other aspects of my life.

Not only did I get to visit the Kaaba, but I also formed a great sisterhood. I will never forget completing Umrah with 27 sisters in a long chain with our arms linked and praying my five prayers in Masjid Nabawi alongside my sisters. Tears were shed during our farewell. I remember saying, “I am surprised I have developed this much love for all the sisters in just five days”. A sister responded, “It is because we all love each other for the sake of Allah”. Alhamdulilah!

First, I have to thank Allah (SWT), then thank AIMA, FIMA, IMAKSA/WAMY and all the sisters for making it a memorable experience. I hope sharing my experience will inspire other medical students!

ONE PATTERN OF EUROPEAN

In an analysis of the mindset of the coloniser and imperialist, Pavel Wargan illustrates from the European invasion of the Americas and the division of Africa to lebensraum in the East and the European settler colony in Palestine, that decades of European imperialism are part and parcel of the one saga. There is one theme.

That is the notion that a superior civilisation has the right if not the duty, to rule other lands of inferior peoples, to bring civilisation to them and prevent them from threatening the civilised.

The actual reason of course is to exploit their resources and their people for the homeland.

The Christian settlers in North America saw themselves as seeking a new promised land. Their “Manifest Destiny” was like the French Civilising Mission in the ancient sophisticated lands of North Africa. The Nazis Holocaust totally discredited any pretence of a European civilising mission, but there has been a sustained attempt by the Europeans and their diaspora to portray the Third Reich as an aberration, as something which stands alone. In fact it is just an extreme example of the course of European imperialism compressed into 12 years, half of which was warfare.

Hitler saw his mission as an integral part of Western colonialism.

“In 1928, Hitler remarked approvingly how US settlers had “gunned down the millions of Redskins to a few hundred thousand and now keep the modest remnant under observation in a cage.” Hitler would create a “Wild West” to Germany’s East.”

“In this way, Nazism carried forward the European colonial tradition against the greatest threat that had yet emerged against it: the Soviet Union.”

The claim that Germany is supporting Netanyahu in the current genocide because of guilt, is not true.

Wargan argues it supports him for the same reason it supported Hitler. The European colonies protect Europe from chaos.

“At a time of systemic crisis, both [Germans and Israelis] appeared as bulwarks of Western imperialism against the rebellious Untermensch, the subhumans – the people who “treat death differently,” who “just die.” [ 24 Januaryn2024 The Electronic Intifada]

Scientific Racism

European imperialism had its ideological underpinning in the work of a series of racist academics, who thought they were at the leading edge of human science.

Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life,” (1859) reveals the racial tone of his world view. His cousin Frances Galton went one further.

In “Hereditary Genius” (1869) Galton wrote; “… we would expect, as a corollary of the evolution theory, that human families would differ from one another in hereditary ability.”

He concluded, “…the average standard of the negro race is two grades below our own”; that the Australian native is at least one grade below the African; that the Lowland Scot and the English NorthCountry man is “decidedly a fraction of a grade superior of the ordinary English.” [Eugenics Review 1951 April 43(1):20]

This notion of the hierarchy of races, with the Nordic white Europeans in the ruling seat, had a long life.

In 1935 “Non-Britishers in Australia: Influence on Population and Progress” had a foreword by the leading history scholar of the time, Melbourne University’s Ernest Scott.

Quoting Gobineau, he wrote; “The history of mankind proves that the destinies of people are governed by a racial law. Neither irreligion, no immorality, no luxurious living, nor weakness of government causes the decadence of civilisations. If a nation goes down, the reason is that its blood, the race itself is deteriorating.”

Such a world view sees colonisation by the superior races as part of the natural order of things.

Zionism carrying on the Colonial Tradition

In a speech in London in 1899, Herzl reiterates the colonial trope of the civilising mission and attaches it to the specific interests of imperial Britain: “We want to carry culture to the East. And once again, Europe

will in turn profit from this work of ours.”

In his 1896 Der Judenstaat, he wrote; “If His Majesty the Sultan were to give us Palestine, we could offer to resolve Turkey’s finances. For Europe, we would form part of a bulwark against Asia there, we would serve as the advance post of civilisation against barbarism.” [2015 Zionist Exclusivism and Palestinian Responses. In Netanyahu’s “My Story,” we find the Zionist colonial tradition carried on.

Part propaganda and part fascist manifesto, Netanyahu dedicates a chapter to his late father, a leading voice in the militant revisionist movement which insisted upon the Jewish right to sovereignty over the whole of historic Palestine.

Revisionist fighters founded Likud’s predecessor Herut, which carried out terrorist operations before and during the 1948 Nakhba.

In accord with Vladimir Jabotinsky’s 1923 essay, “The Iron Wall,” Netanyahu also believes military force should be used to persuade the Palestinians to give up their homeland.

He started his political career by demonising Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin for signing the Oslo Peace Accords, helping pave the way for his murder by a Jewish fanatic.

The rise of Israeli fascism was predicted by Professor Zeev Sternhell, a Holocaust survivor who in 2018 wrote; “In Israel, Growing Fascism and a Racism Akin to Early Nazism.”

He thought that the fascists would not actually harm Palestinians but would just deprive them of their basic human rights such as self-rule.

Her could not conceive of a genocide as we now see occurring. Earlier Jewish intellectuals were not as naïve.

“The public avowals of Begin’s party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and antiimperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.” [2 December 1948 NYT]

This was in a letter signed by a group of Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein, on the occasion of former terrorist Israeli PM Begin visiting the USA.

Netanyahu and his two terrorist ministers are carrying on this tradition of Israeli fascism.

Reaching out to European Fascists

As Anthony Lowenstein pointed out in “The Palestine Laboratory,” various European fascist parties which hate their local Jewish populations along with other nonwhite minorities, admire Israel.

Its ability to keep the Palestinian population in subjection and its success in establishing ethnic supremacy are evidence of successful rule. They also want the drones, weapons and surveillance technology which have been tested out on the occupied people.

Netanyahu and his Likud Party have become a beacon of light to the growing European fascist movement.

“It all began on 19 December 2010

when a sizeable delegation arrived in Tel Aviv, consisting of some thirty leaders of the European Alliance for Freedom. As its name fails to indicate, this was an organisation comprised of a series of parties belonging to the radical right. It was the first time since the creation of Israel that the country had played host to such a sinister gathering, which included Geert Wilders from the Netherlands, Philip Dewinter from Belgium and Jorg Haider’s successor, Heinz-Christian Strache, from Austria.

What are all these neo-fascists, some of them holocaust negationists or Third Reich nostalgics, doing in Israel? They’d come to take part in a conference organised by the right wing of the Likud party devoted to the war on terrorism.” [2 October 2018 Benyamin Netanyahu’s Dangerous Connections with the European Far Right, OrientXXI]

With Israel representing what was once the mainstream of European settler colonialism, being implemented by a fascist government, providing aid and ideology to the European far right, the nasty prediction by Pavel Wargan looks possible.

“On one side, an Axis of Genocide is in formation as Germany, the US, Canada, the UK and other ramparts of the imperial order intervene on the side of extermination. On the other, we find an Axis of Resistance made up of those who know colonialism’s wretched face.”

NSW GOVERNMENT INVESTS $2.8 MILLION IN LOCAL TAFE NSW CAMPUS

TAFE NSW Lidcombe, in the electorate of Auburn, will receive a funding boost, with the NSW Government investing $2.8 million to upgrade campus infrastructure and improve digital connectivity.

This investment is part of a $300 million state-wide program delivering upgraded facilities and equipment to more than 120 TAFE NSW campuses across the state this financial year.

TAFE NSW Auburn will receive: An expansion to the Cabinet-making workshop; Upgrades to campus facilities, including fire systems, roofing repairs, and air conditioning; and new digital devices for teachers and students.

The funding is part of the NSW Government’s record $2.131 billion investment in TAFE NSW through the 2023-24 state budget.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is urging all eligible Australians to get their flu shot following an alarming number of flu cases across the country.

In the first quarter of 2024 there were 26,836 influenza cases reported by the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS).

By February, case numbers were already double the number than what was reported the same time last year.

Pharmacy Guild National President Professor Trent Twomey says Australians should get ahead of the flu season and get their vaccination now.

“The flu season typically runs from May to October,” Professor Twomey said.

“However, flu vaccines for the 2024 season are available now in community pharmacies across Australia.

“Community pharmacies stand ready to administer vaccines around the country and in Queensland, the state government is providing the flu vaccine to all residents aged 6 months and over for free until September 30.

“While in Western Australia the state government has announced free flu vaccinations to all West

Australians aged six months and over during the months of May and June,” he said.

Professor Twomey said that getting vaccinated ahead of the flu season is important for protecting yourself and your loved ones from the flu and its complications.

“Although the vaccine will last throughout the year, it is most effective in the first three to four months following its administration.”

According to the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), people who received an influenza vaccine in late 2023 are still recommended to get the flu vaccine in 2024.

ATAGI also advises that flu vaccines can be given on the same day as other vaccines, such as COVID.

The Australian Government funds influenza vaccines for eligible patients under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Further information will be available from the Department of Health and Aged Care when NIPfunded influenza vaccines become available.

Cumberland Council honoured its oldest residents through a series of activities as part of this year’s Seniors Festival.

The festival, in line with this year’s theme ‘Reach Beyond,’ kicked off on Monday 11 March, with a special morning tea, followed by a program of events that included a golf day, trip to the Premier’s Concert, picnic in Auburn Botanic Gardens and several picturesque bus trips.

Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake expressed her praise for the festival as it served as an excellent platform to recognise the invaluable contributions seniors make to the community.

“Each year the Seniors Festival offers a jam-packed two-week celebration for our seniors, and offers them a chance to venture outdoors, socialise, acquire new skills, and participate in a compelling assortment of events and activities,” she said.

“Seniors make up 15 percent of our population, and play active roles in enriching our Cumberland community, so it’s crucial we dedicate this moment to appreciate and thank them for their role in shaping Cumberland into the dynamic and welcoming community it is.”

Seniors also attended a range of complimentary health seminars, a Harmony Day cook-off and a picnic in the park to round out the fortnight. Council offers a wide range of services and activities for senior citizens of all levels of fitness and independence, including meal delivery services, health support, shopping services and more.

Over the past month, Human Appeal Australia hosted its 17th Annual Year 12 Muslim High Achievement Awards of 2024 celebrating the spectacular efforts of 538 Muslim students across the country scoring ATAR’s above 90. The HAA Annual Muslim High Achievement Awards is a scheme aimed to recognise and reward Muslim students from all over Australia who have demonstrated outstanding results in their year 12 academic studies. The students are given awards and gifted the latest iPad as a continuous effort to promote positivity and community engagement as well as encourage dedication amongst the youth within their academic journeys.

The awards kicked off on the 23rd of February in Canberra for the very first time since the start of the initiative, with the event and community dinner hosted at the Islamic School of Canberra. The memorable night, which commenced with an enriching recitation of the Quran, celebrated eight incredible students and included a special performance by Preacher Moss visiting from the United States, who attended all of this year’s high achiever award events across the country.

Following a spiritual Quran recitation, the State Director Ali Kadir delivered a warm welcoming speech before other guest speakers engaged with attendees including Sheikh Mohammed El-Sayed as well as member of the legislative council, Mira El Dinnawi, who emphasised the vital role of education and ethics of success. Laughter echoed through the venue thanks to the comedic brilliance of Preacher Moss, whose humour was not only entertaining but also carried educational insights for students and parents alike.

The Queensland Year 12 Muslim Achievement Awards’ held on Friday 1st March at the SUNPAC venue in Brisbane. It was a full house event with 250 attendees and the stars of the show were the 44 high achievers from all over the

state. Key speaker on the night was Dr Salih Ibn Muhammed –General Secretary of Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) in Queensland, who is also a past student at the Islamic College of Brisbane. Dr. Salih shared his journey on the night and enlightened guests

on his academic achievements, the subsequent successes in his career and contributions to the community. Sheikh Yahya Adel Ibrahim from Perth also shared some words of wisdom in which gave students a more insightful perspective on their lives and human development.

Down in Victoria on March 2nd, the Achievement Awards was held at Altona Reception in Melbourne and was attended by students, accompanying family members, members of the community and school principals. The event celebrated an astounding 154 students who were all awarded certificates of recognition and gifts for achieving ATAR’s above 90. The ceremony was opened with a Quran recitation by Osama Akkad – one of the achievers and award recipients. The guest speakers were preceded by an introductory word from Sheikh Rabih Baytie who is the Victoria branch manager for Human Appeal Australia. This was followed by various speeches delivered by guest speakers including Mohamed Mohideen, the Victorian Multicultural Commissioner and Adel Salman, President of the Islamic Council of Victoria, amongst others.

The final event for the 17th Annual Muslim High Achievers Awards was held in Sydney, New South Wales on the 3rd of March which celebrated the largest group of students in the country this year. The event honored an astonishing 272 students who reached excellence in the previous

academic year. Following a Quran recitation, a warm welcome was addressed to the guests by Human Appeal Australia’s Director, Bashar Al-Jamal. Notable guests included the honorable MP Jihad Dib who delivered a word to the attendees and participated in handing out the first batch of awards for the night. Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal

Hayek was also present to congratulate and honor the high achievers along with their families. The event had come to an end with another special performance from guest Preacher Moss to add to the already joyful atmosphere, sealing the awards season for this year.

Part of the mission at HAA is to help enunciate the successes and achievements of local communities and particularly the youth as shown through another successful year of high achievers. It is crucial that there is a continued effort to push for dedication and promote the upholding of values and ethics within the community. Human Appeal Australia congratulates the incredible scores of students this year from all over the country who have shown exceptional efforts in their academic journeys and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.
