City, as an accumulation of human civilization and the foundation of modern society, has always been my concern and interest. In my understanding, there is no clear difference between designing a building and designing the city. Every time you built, no matter what scale or function, you change the city on its structure, view or lifestyle. It is a choice for every architect, to take the responsibility or to ignore it; to create bonuses or to make problems. I have been constantly working on the "bonus way" in my graduate year. As presented in my portfolio, three projects are selected to show three different responsive ways to city issues -- to modify the metabolism of Coney Island Beach in urbanization process; to create Full Food Chain in urtinsa industrial area; to develop public institution solving the water problem in Barranquilla, Collombia. Each project generates the concept from a city problem and follows a clear logic to complete the architectural design and create bonus for city. In a word, my design methodology is to make the city a better place rather than make the architecture an artwork.

001. BODILY URBANISM Acadamic work of defining coney island beach frontline 2016.06- 2016.08 Cooperative work, Collaborater: Zhe Cao Critic: Prof. Andres Jaque Location: Coney Island Beach, Brooklyn, New York

Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and entertainment destination on the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. Coney Island beach is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and years of neglect. The Coney Island beach (beach front line) is consisted of the metabolism and the expansion of metabolism of every actors on the beach. Metabolism and the expansion of metabolism in these context indicates the chemical reactions involved in a human or animal body. And the expansion of metabolism collaborating or coordination between creatures and artificial constructions, as in machineries, urban architectures, and infrastructures.

Deconstruction of Coney Island Mapping of Coney Island, the beach frontline is so complicated including different infrastructure, amusement park facilities, beach supplying buildings and socail housing. They contribute to the beach to create the beach as it is. The deconstruction aims to recreate the connections between those elements in a different perspective.

The Metabolism of Coney Island Metabolism and the expansion of metabolism in these context indicates the chemical reactions involved in a human or animal body. And the expansion of metabolism collaborating or coordination between creatures and artificial constructions, as in machineries, urban architectures, and infrastructures.

When people participate in the entertainment facilities, the fast movement of their body on the Thunderbolt, the Roller Coaster, the wonder wheel. People will generate different extent of hormone which is the endocrine system.

The rise of adrenaline leads to faster heart breaking, blood flowing and the rise of blood sugar which make people hungry. The food service on the beach affect people`s digestive system.

The nervous system was affected by every single movement on the beach. People can feel the great views of the beach, the smell from the Nathan’s hotdog, the temperature of seawater, the wind flowing through faces.

The rise of adrenaline leads to faster heart breaking, blood flowing and the rise of blood sugar which make people hungry. The food service on the beach affect people`s urinary system.

Another side of Metabolism The metabolical process accumulates conflicts and complicities. The toxicity accumulates in the water and absorbed by creature and intake by human that eventually affects human metabolism; the hotdog made by chopped pork that contains large amount of excessive of energy. All 12 cases has their complicities.

002. VERTICAL OCCUPATION Acadamic work of typologycal correction for urtinsa industrial area 2017.01- 2017.05 Cooperative work, Collaborater: Wenzhao Zhang Critic: Prof. Juan Herreros, Maite Borjabad Location: Alcorcon, Madrid, Spain

Observing the current disjointed relationship between agricultural production and city life, the project aims to create a different scenario where the food production is synthesized with everyday living. The proposal aims to use the existing factories on site as an infrastructure and bring in a new layer of food production from growing to production and finally consumption. Not in the previous disjointed way but integrated as a new contemporary agricultural industrial way. By combining the food production with living scenes, these industrial elements could become an artificial nature on this monotonous site and generate a new living experience. The project tries to correct the exsiting typologies by introducing this scene where everyday life, growing amd industrial all happening together and in this way generate a new living experience.

003. Staging Urbanization Urban Design for Maqun Metro Transfer Station 2014.09-2014.11 Individual work Mentor: Pro. Tang Peng, Pro. Shen Yang Location: Maqun Streets, Nanjing, China

The process of China's urbanization can be rewritten as an embarrassing history of urban villages while they emergy and fade. Surrounded by fast roads and sky scapers, these dilapidated areas serve for quite a period as temporary shelters for people who struggled at the bottom of cities, and also the last spiritual sustenance for farmers who once binded their entire lives with the land. Dilapidated, truly, but there is still memory and memorable lifestyle lie in them. When the urban villages are about to be torn down and replaced by modern buildings, how to deal with the dying lifestyle and memory? Who shall take responsibility for the turbulence in local people's life? Where lies a soft path for them to integrate into city life? In the case of construction of urban complex in Maqun against local urban villages, I offer a solution concerning the dimension of time in urbanization. The specific dtrategy as "growth pattern of construction" concludes main public space as base of growth construction, three stages of construction matching with urban villages' transformation and technical method. Hopefully it may provide a fresh new way of thinking in China's urbanization process.

Solution in Time

Located in the suburban area of Nanjing, the site of the project is currently surround urban villages. In the Nanjing government's vision for the city's future, this area would de eastern gate to the city, a prosperous place with busy traffic and active commercial eve Thus, the urban villages and local people's past life are doomed to fade.

During three stages of construction, the view on the site gradually changes. Trees grow higher, buildings rise, farmland turns into green space, more and more people and shops and enterprises gather around. The construction period itself is a brief history of urbanization, as well as a piece of valuable memory for local people.

004. Dual Publicness Cultural & Art Center 2014.04-2014.06 Individual work Mentor: Pro. BaoLi Location: Qinhuai Riverside, Nanjing, China

The lack of public space is not an unusal problem in Chinese cities, while public buildings carries most responsibillity to improve the situation. The site of the project is a typical case of this situation. The broadened fast road on the north and narrow alleys on the community side largely limit the area where social activities could happen. However the Qinhuai river across the site gives it potential of publicness. How to awaken the protential through the newly built theater? How to activate the site and the urban life in the area? How to maximize the value of landscape? In my design, I created two layers of publicness, considering the actural operation of the theater. One is autonomous publicness while the other is urban publicness, each focuses on the interior/ exterior space, and activities as an audience/ an normal visiter. Both of them benefits from the view of the river. With the dual publicness, the cultural and art center can serve a large area as a active factor in the city.

The site is located in the downtown area of Nanjing, however not quite convenient as in public spaces. The nearest museum is 1.5 kilometers away, while the nearest park is 3.0 kilometers away. The site area faces the lack of public space in urban scale. Beijige Park

How does a public building contribute to the site? [Autonomous Publicness]

In the activities of an audience, the halftime in the lounge is when publicness most likely generates. As the relationship between two theaters is concerned, a shared lounge area above the river is created.

005. Renewal and Derivation Renovation of Historical Building in Campus 2014.02-2014.04 Individual work Mentor: Pro. Tang Peng Location: Southeast University, Nanjing, China

Historical buildings carry valuable shared memory for cities and act as a part of cities' history, which makes the alteration and addition sensitive. Shatangyuan Canteen is located across from the campus gate, designed by YangTingbao in 1950s and has been serving students for 63 years. The rennovation project focuses on form, space and function of it, turning the canteen into a multifunctional student activity center. How does the additional building response to the old? How to put a new life into the historical building? How doe the old-new relationship fit with the campus axis? In my design, the old-new relationship is carefully designed. On the one hand, the new response to the old in several ways, including axis, space, roof and material. On the other hand, the new activates the old in several ways including function and circulation. The two parts work together, creating quality interior and exterior space. Besides, the structure and construction issues are emphasized in the design.

The site is located at the end of the campus axis. Two buildings are preserved on the site: Shatangyuan Canteen and a small Minguo building.

006. Efficient Transportation Ningbo Lishe International Airport Terminal 2 2015.03-2015.06 Cooperative work CollaboratorďźšHongyu Zhang My role: Concept, analysis, model, drawings Mentor: Pro. Zhouying, Pro. Gao Wenyan Location: Lishe, Ningbo, China

Rapid transportation is one of the bases of modern city, and the improvement of efficiency seems to be an endless issue. In a terminal design project, the value of efficiency has significant importance. It is common to feel confused and lost in a terminal, and also desperate when pressed for time. The rushing travelers, cold metal material, and long, complex circulation always drive people mad. How to improve the traditional circulation for clarity and efficiency? How to maximize the potential of airport configuration concerning accessibility and economy? How to balance the structure requirement for long-span space and comfort level? In the Ningbo Lishe airport Terminal 2 addition project, the design generates from three aspects including configuration, circulation and structure, focusing on the improvement of efficiency and space. The main building use parabola to decrease the influence from U-shaped bay which blocks planes to get in and out. In terms of circulation, the vertical strategy is used to separate different streams of people, which highly improves efficiency. The structure system combines the long-span space and the concept of the bamboo weaving, creating high-quality interior space.

STRUCTURE LONG-SPAN STRUCTURE As a huge transportation architecture, airports need long-span space to support many different functions. There are several prototypes of LONG-SPAN STRUCTURE. The structure should be not only strong enough to hold huge space of airport, but also pure enough not to block the light.

LOCAL FLAVOR Handicrafts like bamboo weavings are of historic and local meanings to NINGBO. I think the airport of NINGBO should embody the beauty and concept of local handicrafts.
