City, as an accumulation of human civilization and the foundation of modern society, has always been my concern and interest. In my understanding, there is no clear difference between designing a building and designing the city. Every time you built, no matter what scale or function, you change the city on its structure, view or lifestyle. It is a choice for every architect, to take the responsibility or to ignore it; to create bonuses or to make problems. I have been constantly working on the "bonus way" in my graduate year. As presented in my work sample, projects are selected to show different responsive ways to city issues -- to modify the metabolism of Coney Island Beach in urbanization process; to create Full Food Chain in urtinsa industrial area; to develop a more efficient public transportation method, to create a staging urbanism, to bring publicness to community, to intervene historical building, to generate different living scenes, to reporgram and rethink the relationship between community and parking, to transform disappearing hutong area, to design a fusion chinese restaurant. Each project generates the concept from a city problem and follows a clear logic to complete the architectural design and create bonus for city. In a word, my design methodology is to make the city a better place rather than make the architecture an artwork.

01 BODILY URBANISM
Acadamic work of defining coney island beach frontline Critic: Andres Jaque; Collaborater: Zhe Cao; Location: Coney Island Beach, Brooklyn, New York Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and entertainment destination on the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. The Coney Island beach is consisted of the metabolism and the expansion of metabolism of every actors on the beach. Metabolism and the expansion of metabolism in these context indicates the chemical reactions involved in a human or animal body. And the expansion of metabolism collaborating or coordination between creatures and artificial constructions, as in machineries, urban architectures, and infrastructures.

People will generate different extent of hormone when they play in the Thunderbolt, the Roller Coaster, the wonder wheel because of the fast movement of their bodies.
The rise of adrenaline leads to faster heart breaking, blood flowing and the rise of blood sugar which make people hungry. The food service on the beach affect people`s digestive system.
The nervous system was affected by every single movement on the beach. People can feel the great views of the beach, the smell from the Nathan’s hotdog, the temperature of seawater, the wind flowing through faces.

Another side of Metabolism The metabolical process accumulates conflicts and complicities. The toxicity accumulates in the water and absorbed by creature and intake by human that eventually affects human metabolism; the hotdog made by chopped pork that contains large amount of excessive of energy. All 12 cases has their complicities.

02 VERTICAL OCCUPATION
Acadamic work of correcting urtinsa industrial area through typological method Critic: Juan Herreros; Collaborater: Wenzhao Zhang; Location: Alcorcon, Madrid, Spain Observing the current disjointed relationship between agricultural production and city life, the project aims to create a different scenario where the food production is synthesized with everyday living. The proposal aims to use the existing factories on site as an infrastructure and bring in a new layer of food production from growing to production and finally consumption. Not in the previous disjointed way but integrated as a new contemporary agricultural industrial way. By combining the food production with living scenes, these industrial elements could become an artificial nature on this monotonous site and generate a new living experience.

RUI GUAN WORK SAMPLE
Intergrated Living Scene Based on different types of factories on site, we developed three basic typology-correction types. All typologies have similar approaches but adapt differently to their environment. The original factories on site are preserved and adapted into new food factories and community market. Then the vertical green houses are inserted to maximize sunlight and production rate.
SPAIN 54% Argricultural land Total 25,600,000 ha of the land. 6.4% of population working in agriculture industry and produce 3% of the GDP.
MADRID 48% Argriculture land in the community if Madrid. Main crops in Madrid: Vine Grapes, Cereals, Olives and vegetables.
ALCORCON 1% of the 2,700 companies in Alcorcon are related with argriculture

Construction Detail In order to fully utilize the space on top of the existing factory, we transformed them into growing space that gradually step down the roof slope. The detail design reflects such relationship of new over old. The original structure, the beautiful steel truss, is kept and then reinforced to hold the load of new irrigation system and soil on top of the light roof.

03 EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION
Acadamic work of expanding terminal T2 for Ningbo Lishe International Airport Critic: Wenyan Gao, Ying Zhou; Collaborater: Hongyu Zhang; Location: Lishe, Ningbo, China How to improve the traditional circulation for clarity and efficiency? How to maximize the potential of airport configuration concerning accessibility and economy? How to balance the structure requirement for long-span space and comfort level? In the Ningbo Lishe airport Terminal 2 addition project, the design generates from three aspects including configuration, circulation and structure, focusing on the improvement of efficiency and space. In terms of circulation, the vertical strategy is used to separate different streams of people, which highly improves efficiency. The structure system combines the long-span space and the concept of the bamboo weaving, creating high-quality interior space.

Circulation Concept Simplifying the circulation of transferring is the most human-friendly design. Centralizing these procedures of transfering is the key point. So, i divide the airport vertically into four parts. All the transfering processes are on the central part of the airport so that everyone can get to the 'transferring region‘ easily.

04 STAGING URBANIZATION Acadamic work of replacing urban village in Maqun Critic: Peng Tang, Yang Shen; Location: Maqun, Nanjing, China
The process of China's urbanization can be rewritten as an embarrassing history of urban villages while they emergy and fade. In the case of construction of urban complex in Maqun against local urban villages, I offer a solution concerning the dimension of time in urbanization. The specific dtrategy as "growth pattern of construction" concludes main public space as base of growth construction, three stages of construction matching with urban villages' transformation and technical method. Hopefully it may provide a fresh new way of thinking in China's urbanization process.

During three stages of construction, the view on the site gradually changes. Trees grow higher, buildings rise, farmland turns into green space, more and more people and shops and enterprises gather around. The construction period itself is a brief history of urbanization, as well as a piece of valuable memory for local people.

05 DUAL PUBLICNESS
Acadamic work of bringing publicness through cultural and art center Critic: Li Bao; Individual work; Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China The lack of public space is not an unusal problem in Chinese cities, while public buildings carries most responsibillity to improve the situation. The site of the project is a typical case of this situation. The broadened fast road on the north and narrow alleys on the community side largely limit the area where social activities could happen. In the design, I created two layers of publicness, considering the actural operation of the theater. One is autonomous publicness while the other is urban publicness, each focuses on the interior/ exterior space, and activities as an audience/ an normal visiter. Both of them benefits from the view of the river. With the dual publicness, the cultural and art center can serve a large area as a active factor in the city.

06 RENEWAL AND DERIVATION Acadamic work of intervening historical building in Campus Critic: Peng Tang; Individual work; Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China
Shatangyuan Canteen is located across from the campus gate, designed by YangTingbao in 1950s and has been serving students for 63 years. The rennovation project focuses on form, space and function of it, turning the canteen into a multi-functional student activity center. In my design, the old-new relationship is carefully designed. On the one hand, the new response to the old in several ways, including axis, space, roof and material. On the other hand, the new activates the old in several ways including function and circulation. The two parts work together, creating quality interior and exterior space. Besides, the structure and construction issues are emphasized in the design.

07 COURTYARD HABITAT
Acadamic work of developing high-rising residential area in Nanjing Critic: Meiying Zhang; Collaborater: Feng Zhao; Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China The living pattern of nowaday residents are changing over time. The long working hours and high mental pressure of younger generation, parents of them have to help their children with their daily life. Therefore, a new living pattern has to be established. The project discusses the possibility to reorganize the two generations. The traditinal method is to create two apartments on the same level that is separately designed for both generations. However, the traditional method still has shortcomings because the two generations still live in different ways. The intention is to organize different people on different levels and to create public space suitable for different types of users.

The city center of Nanjing is facing the difficulty of parking and lack of public space. Community in Baishanting area do not have enough space for so many cars. The site nears the city wall and Xuanwu lake which is the most important public park in Nanjing. The design intends to create a vertical parking space for the community, at the same time, provides more retailing and recreation space for people from the neighborhood. From detail to the urban context, the building response to issues in different scales. On high level of the building, it provides great view for neighbors. On ground floor, there are cafe, small library, convenient stores serving the community.
