Sketch Design Development

The idea of a spring made with two planes folded one on top of another which can expand and rotate simultaneously, enabling more flexible and dynamic forms of volume.

Users may adjust sleeping pod to their personal level of privacy, protection and coverage whilst they are inside. Folding, expansion and compression of section profiles.

The concept of folding 2D surfaces to form 3D volume which can be expand2ed, contracted, rotated and distorted.

Tension member may be needed (such as aluminum/ steel) if no solid materials are used.

The idea of a central pivoting point enabling a retractable function with a wire exoskeleton attached to the pivot, allowing easy and portable handling.

- Semi-exposed to the external environment -Intimacy - Privacy - Not air-tight, allows ventilation inside the sleeping pod.

FRONT

BACK

We are aiming to design a semi-enclosed volume of private space and want to show the different privacy between the forepart and the back of the project. Besides, the skin is collapsible and removable. Due to the replacement of our design is based on people sleeping on a desk, thus the human face is facing the forepart while human back facing the backside of the objets. In order to make more protection of human face, to make passerby not able to see the full face, the weave is more intensive than in back part and also we slightly change the angle of every panel. Also, the texture of weave determines passerby just can see parts of the user’s body instead of the whole, which ensures the security and the privacy as well. Moreover, from top to bottom, due to the concern of air ventilation, the holes of the weave becomes wider gradually. 6

This design basically uses a different kind of panelling system which uses lines crossing over perpendicular lines to allow expansion and compression along a given axis. This mechanism could potentially be used to surround and create an external layer around the arms, legs. torso and head.

Precedent Research Sleep Suit by Jesse Forrest

Expandable, Privacy, Layers, Protection, Cocoon-like structure What is the concept of the precedent? [Maximum 5 key words]

Name of precedent and designer

Description of precedent The sleepsuit is made of EVA Foam; a flexible material with a soft and cushion-y texture, enabling the user to feel more comfortable inside. The foam is cut into individual sections and then combined together to form a weave-like pattern with gaps in between when the suit is pulled down. The gaps between each section allows the user to see and feel the external environment, however the people outside can only see small segments of the user’s body, because of the wavy pattern created when the sections are attached. Thus, the sleepsuit excels in terms of comfort, sense of security and privacy.

Precedent applied to design Expandable, Privacy, Layers, Protection, Cocoon-like structure

How can you use this precedent to influence your design ? This precedent’s idea of attaching layers together to create a number of sections which forms a 3D volume that can expand, contract and even rotate.

Design development - Version #1

Step1. Based on rectangle. Divided it with its mid points. Use intercurve to create a smooth line. And then mirror it.

Step4. Copy the figure create in Step 2. Scale it with factor of 0.75. Move it above the original one. Draw section lines between these curves.

Step2. ExtrudeCrv the figure drawn step 1.

Step5. Use sweep2 to make the section surface.

Step3. Three circles on the three points of a triangle. And then draw three tangent circles between each two circles drawn before. And trim it.

Step6. Use paneling tools to add the object and make it 3 dimension. 11

Design development - Version #2

Step1. Based on a circle. Trim it into a curve.

Step2. Revovle the curve to make a surface.

Step4. Trying the paneling tools of panel custom 2D.

Step5. Panelling tools of Panel custom 3D

Step3. Using panneling tools to create the grids.

Prototype

The material we choose are fabric and cardboard. For stabilizing the object, we use cardboard as our structural material and use it as the connector for each strip of fabric. Due to we are aim to create a sleeping pod, so the design should be take the comfort of users as one of the concern. The characteristic of fabric is soft and flexible which make it has the sense of comfort, so it is a good combination when we use fabric and cardboard together.

Testing Effects

The desired effect of our model includes distortion with perspectives. Looking at the prototype, we can see that each individual section of cardboard has its unique shape, gradually changing in angle and width. This effect will allow more privacy for the user as people on the outside can look through these sections but cannot clearly distinguish the user’s identity through the folds. This creates a sense of mystery and disguise, a potential indication for bystanders to leave the person sleeping in peace.
