ALYSON BEATON- Evidence of Professional Practice
PROCESS
I spent a couple of years really diving into researching my surroundings. I knew I was interested in creating things for children that would teach them about design and how to observe the world around them. I wanted to engage my own children in the things that interest me and my husband, that being architecture, design and urbanism. I wanted my children to feel a sense of security about our decision to live in a gentrifying neighborhood in Chicago, and living in a multi-unit building. I found myself explaining to my children why we didn’t drive in our car and why we did not live like the rest of our families, in suburbs.
ALYSON BEATON- Evidence of Professional Practice
I knew that drawing and creating was the way that I was able to engage my daughter in understanding how to see our environment. It was though these explorations with her that the next five years of my work would begin to take shape.

2011 IMAGINE YOUR WORLD
ALYSON BEATON- Evidence of Professional Practice
All systems man-made and natural share a common overall form and function. It is this systemic form that binds us all together as inhabitants of this planet. “Imagine Your World” is a zero waste activity set that entices young imaginations to go out and explore, draw, collect, write, discover, and ultimately imagine the future of our world. For all kids in all cities! 6 compost-able posters include: discovering your world, exploring your community, retreating to your home, cultivating a garden, love and wonder about your family, sharing and preparing a meal. 100% Compost-able or Recyclable, hand made in Chicago, IL, Grow Books Press © 2011 ALYSON BEATON- Evidence of Professional Practice

PRESS & REVIEWS
“That’s a tough position to hold in the book industry, where booksellers routinely return unsold product directly to publishers, who end up trashing the extras. (And in the fickle world of kid’s books, there can be a lot of extras). Beaton hopes to cut through the waste by publishing very limited runs of books with recycled paper and vegetable-based inks that are designed to be totally consumed—by kids first and worms second.-Amanda Hess, Good Online Magazine

GROW BOOKS PRESS
The mission of the press was to produce books in the USA using community labor and in an eco friendly manner. All of the books published would be based in Chicago, in urban settings. All of the books would be printed locally and independentally distributed. I challenged myself to publish 1 book every 2 months and to do all press and PR myself. After launching 4 books, Imagine Your World, Pushie, Jr. By Maud Lavin, Blow Wind Blow by Rruce Ray, and Find Art by Alysia Kaplan, I felt that I had completed the project.

One day young Rufus ventured to ask his father about the mystery of the windows.
Father, he asked, why are the windows in our house nailed shut, and why dont we open them? His father, wise as he was about books and writing, had very little to say about the windows.
g si hhhhhh “My son”
he started, sighing a heavy sigh,
hh
“I am much too busy for silly questions, but I do believe it is because there are dangerous things outside and the windows protect us.”
He returned to his heavy book.
Acting as a publisher of books came with more than just funding the projects. With Blow Wind Blow, I also illustrated the book. Rufus inhaled deeply and promptly
achooooo a aa h e h a h a aa l e l a l sneezed the biggest sneeze of his entire young life.
Young Rufus blurted out,
“CRAZY OLD MAN, YOUR WINDOW…. IT’S OPEN!”
“YOUR ROOM IS...” Young Rufus stopped in the middle of his sentence.
“Just as a window should be,” replied the wise man.
“BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DANGEROUS THINGS OUTSIDE? WHAT ABOUT THE MESS INSIDE?”
“Horse manure! There is nothing so dangerous out there that you or I couldn’t swat it, trap it or scare it away. Young Rufus, take a deep breath.”
“You have never breathed fresh air before, have you?”The Old Man laughed. Rufus breathed again. His lungs felt tight at first, but then his heart began to pound the liveliest beat, and his head began to swirl with the rush of life.

2012 MINI LOGAN SQUARE
ALYSON BEATON- Evidence of Professional Practice
MINI LOGAN SQUARE Mini Logan Square is an installation of replicas of houses and businesses in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. After creating the idea for the houses and making 10 by hand, I created and curated an exhibit inviting local designers to “play. I gave houses to 8 different designers to decorate and to be put on display just in time for the holidays for all to enjoy. All of the houses have whimsical details and truly became a tiny holiday spectacle.

MINI HOUSES FOR MIN ARCHITECTS
Having a background in architecture and a masters in visual communications, much of my thesis work dealt with suburban sprawl., creating books and installations about the issues.
Personally, I am fascinated by cities and how people interact with architecture and how communities are formed in urban neighborhoods. My little houses replicate an urban vernacular. Children can collect and create their own worlds that mirror that of the city.

LAUNCHING LILLE HUSET
In 2012 I decided to see if the product I had created had a viable fan base by introducing it on Kickstarter. I ran a campaign to raise the initial funds to get the first line into production. The process of crowdfunding was harrowing and exhausting but ultimately rewarding. Putting the work into the world in that manner enhanced my thesis. Finding fans and strangers who want to support the work of independent designers and artists is an experience in itself. The consumer aspects of the crowdfunding are unfounded. Having successful participation in a kickstarter campaign catapults the idea into reality.

LILLE HUSET
My 2013 line is an evolved form of the original line I had produced the year before. I changed the material to be 100% paperboard, the size of the houses are smaller, and more consumer friendly. In developing the new line it became clearer to me that I was creating an imaginary world for children. I added colors and patterns to the houses to expand the idea of what a house “should” look like. I found inspiration in architecture around the world. I have added different accessories that also continue the narrative. Lastly, I created a series of videos that touch on eco issues with “Garden Day” where the family plants a garden on the roof of their 2 flat. The themes are becoming more realized as the line evolves year to year.

“Alyson Beaton’s adorable Lille Huset Doll houses are miniature doll houses that kids can create, color and customize as a simple, rewarding craft activity. Translating into “little house” in Norwegian, the Lille Huset doll houses are simple enough for kids to assemble, and can be stacked and arranged to create entire miniature cities. Even better, the doll houses are eco-friendly—made from 100% recycled paperboard and printed in the USA with a certified carcinogenic free printing process.
If the idea of playing with doll houses seems a bit provincial for your tech-savvy kids, consider the worldly view offered by Lille Huset. With a background in architecture, Alyson Beaton gained inspiration for her simply elegant toy houses while traveling throughout Europe and discovering new cities. Her sweet creations are constructed from wood and recycled paperboard, and are designed to invite creative play. Take a peek at some of the line’s offerings, and perhaps you’ll want to put a new spin on the meaning of “home sweet home” for your imaginative little ones. -- PopSugar Blog

4. CITIZEN DESIGNER: DEDICATED BIKE LANE IN CHICAGO PROJECT
Prompt: Over the next 5 weeks of class you will be developing a design intervention to aid biking along the Milwaukee ave. corridor. This street is a main commuting street for bikers in Chicago currently. Because it is a diagonal street it, it eases the commute for a biking community between north side neighborhoods and downtown. We are going to propose that the street is void of all vehicular traffic and is now a dedicated bike corridor. 1. You are being asked to choose a site: spanning from between 2 intersections on Milwaukee Ave. between Kedzie and Kinze. 2. Once you have chosen a site you are going to start your research using the following learned observation techniques, photographic, sketching, video. Things to notice: Biking traffic: count bikers, interview bikers, find out things that they would like to have along a path to work. What do bikers wear? What do they do in the winter? Is this a better way to commute? Is there adequate parking? What amenities are available to people at this site?

WATCH On the south wall of a pre-existing building a LED screen would display ads during the day and at night be a place for people to gather and watch movies.
RELAX On top of The Spot is a large patch of green grass - which you can bring your bike with you via the side ramp. A great place to eat and relax, and view movies at night.
REPAIR The rear of the building houses the bike repair part of The Spot. The repair shop is run by in part by Copenhagen Bicycle, whose show room is three blocks north.
EAT Getting food while communiting can be cumbersome - having to get off your bike, find a place to lock it, and then finally head inside to eat. The Spot offers an easier way. All along the outside wall (under the overhang) are vertical bike locks.
