tiny house, big thesis
fall 2016 - spring 2017
For my graduate thesis project I chose to study the tiny house movement, and design a tiny home based on my findings in the study. I was intrigued by the movement because of its countless benefits to people and the environment - flexibility, limited waste, cost-effectiveness sustainability, and appreciation of craft, just to name a few.

I quickly became inspired by a tiny house’s inherent flexibility, the ability to easily relocate your residence and live a more fulfilling life off the grid. The goal for my tiny house was to reflect this flexibility throughout the home - allowing changes of location, climate and personal needs to dictate the forms and behaviors of the home. After filling many sketchbooks and rolls of trace with my thoughts, I came up with the design shown on the next few pages. There are many kinetic elements to the final design that allows the small space to constantly transform. I presented the design in four different contexts to prove this.

Queen Elizabeth Park lies on the edge of the Westmount neighborhood in Montreal. The park currently gives residents a relaxing space to enjoy, while also serving as a buffer zone from the city. Over 40 trees exist on the site, which is why I felt it was important to preserve as many of these as possible. The mosque not only respects existing site conditions, but also embraces them. Wood columns line the perimeter of the ground floor as a nod to the tree trunks. The columns are spaced irregularly and align with the tree trunks themselves. By featuring columns in the facade, the building appears transparent across the site. The colonnade also has an even deeper connection to early mosque design; it is a modern take on the traditional plan.

The design was also strongly influenced by the prayer hall’s necessary orientation toward Mecca. I decided to orient the religious spaces in this direction and the community spaces with the site itself. This organization created a winged plan that opens toward the city, welcoming people into the building. The open courtyard can house many activities, such as farmers markets and outdoor prayer. The prayer hall expresses its heirarchy by resting above the other spaces and being clad in a different material. The spaces at ground level are all similar; the rooms are surrounded by gabion walls that allow for light to pass between the rocks. This wall system not only creates a spiritual feeling with light, but also relates to a common building material of Westmount.

american cultural center Although a relatively small city, it is easy to become lost in the winding streets of Florence, Italy. Visual cues guide people through the streets and orient them within the city. Because of its massive size, the Florence Cathedral constantly serves this purpose. Piazza dei Ciompi not only has a view of the Cathedral, but also the bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Croce. The significance of these two monuments guides my design and creates a link between The American Cultural Center and Florence. The cultural center provides studio spaces for art and architecture students studying in Florence. Framed views of the Duomo, bell tower, piazza and its historic loggia will easily orient students in the city and guide them in observing Florentine culture firsthand.

chinatown branch library Located on the edge of Chinatown, Montreal, this project is inspired by penjing, the ancient Chinese art of depicting artistically formed trees, other plants, and landscapes in miniature. The goal of the project was to provide the neighborhood with a stronger identity and give the community a place to be proud of. Libraries today are quite different than they used to be; they are no longer a quiet place for reading. Now libraries are a place of interaction and movement, which is what I wanted to express in my design. Not only did I organize the program like a bonsai tree, but also allowed spaces to overlap and overlook one another. There are strong connections between the different library departments, as well as the site.

pencil tower Pencil towers have become a new trend in high-rise architecture. Extremely tall and thin, these buildings tower over others in the cities they are grounded in. Introducing a pencil tower in Hartford will promote development of the city and add an interesting element to its skyline. The tower will house 35 luxury apartments, as well as a restaurant and a cafe that are accessible to the public. Because of the small footprint, the apartments will each take up their own floor. Sustainable design is a required element of the building design, primarily as part of the facade. The building is situated on the edge of Bushnell Park, Hartford’s most significant green space. It is also in close proximity to the amenities of downtown hartford and the Connecticut River.

The new entry to Collinsville’s Catholic Church has an abstract-minimalist take on greek revival architecture. The entrance features a layering of experiences, light & transparency. The addition is composed of a steel structure with wooden horizontal elements that are broken up to allow light in & create certain views.

tiny watercolors
2016
In 2016 I learned how to watercolor by painting one tiny watercolor every day. My inspiration was a memory of each day-or an old photograph when the days weren’t too memorable. The following is a small sample of my favorite paintings, all to actual scale.

misc artwork Outside of architecture I enjoy creating art in many different mediums, my favorite being pencil drawings. I constantly have art projects going on in my free time. I feel that my constant practice in drawing has consistently helped me grow as an architecture student over the years. The works on this spread are freehand sketches drawn in Florence, Italy, and two pieces from a drawing class I took there. View from Piazzale Michelangelo | Pen | 5” x 7”

In my senior year of high school I was looking for creative scholarships and came across the nationwide stuck at prom scholarship. I was required to create two prom outfits out of duck brand duct tape. I had never worked with duct tape or constructed an outfit before, let alone two. I was selected as a top ten contestant by a panel of judges and went on to win second place through public vote. The intensive hours of work (165) and dedication prepared me for what to expect in my upcoming years of architecture school.
