“Architecture provides the expression, while the interiors create the impression. To achieve balance, these aspects of design must complement each other and meet in perfect harmony.” -Alyssa R. Smith
Enclosed please find my portfolio submission to the Department of Architecture Graduate Teacher and Research Fellowships. The portfolio is a collection of my personal and academic work expressed through a variety of different media including freehand sketching, hand drafting, computer rendering and modeling, and photography. My natural aptitude for design and teaching, coupled with my bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and my past work experience, have provided me with an extraordinary set of professional interior design skills. The combination of architectural and interior design educational studies will give me an incredible knowledge base to draw upon as I move forward in my desire to become a graduate teacher in the department of architecture. I am very excited about the prospect of making a small difference in the world of architecture and look forward to joining Department of Architecture Graduate Teacher and Research Fellowships, Academic Year 2012-2013.
I hope you enjoy my portfolio.
Thank you for your consideration,
Alyssa R. Smith

This project aims to culturally define Oklahoma City through the realization of two main buildings; a multifunctional building for performing arts and a joint cultural center. The form draws inspiration from the city itself. The city is not separate but rather it is joined together by a common link to the community and adjacent buildings. The Performing Arts Center consists of three theaters which are connected by a grand foyer that offers a hybrid experience for patrons. The foyer contains a multi-level arrangement that includes bars, cafe restaurants, specialty shops, and other forms of entertainment. The culture center consists of activities such as art galleries spaces, bookstores, and the theatre library. The Grand Plaza will provide a large outdoor space for pedestrians that visit this urban downtown area.

The Culinary Marketplace is a place for exchange... An exchange of food, knowledge, and taste palettes through social encounters. This culinary center in Portland, OR aims to promote community exploration into the culinary process through an engaging series of activities that focus on maintaining an interactive atmosphere and a hands-on approach to culinary explorations. The conversational nature of the building forms allows for a sense of connection between each building as well as a connection with the in-between space that is allotted to circulation and the market. Inspired by the meandering streets of old cities, the market space allows for movement and high levels of interaction.
The Suzuki Community Music Institute, located in Eugene, OR provides a desirable connection to the surrounding community and neighborhood through a formal yet comfortable learning environment for both students and parents involved in the Suzuki Music Program. The main language of the building forms create a conversation that is directed toward a social gathering space. My design incorporates the use of materials in their natural form to blend with the surrounding context. The fractured glass elements that span the length of the building collect natural light and bounce around playful shadows while also serving as the connection between the building forms.

The Urban Community Health Alliance, in honor of Wayman Tisdale, will provide specialty testing and treatment for urgent care, dialysis, and chemotherapy health concerns to a part of North Tulsa that is currently underserved by the philanthropy foundation, local hospitals, and the State of Oklahoma. Our group facilitated a first look at the relationship between community health and healthcare design. Our goal was to bring families, children, adults and elders together using integrated health care solutions. Our design solution promoted collaboration between each of the specialty uses within the healthcare center. The design team consisted of two architectural students and two interior design students (Maria Colmenares, Sam Day, Hayden Reid and Alyssa Smith).

The KNOT Design Group was formed to operate as a collaborative, hands-on architecture and interior design team. We worked together as a group to communicate our thoughts and ideas. By tackling every step of the process together we were able to develop several complimentary concepts. The Health & Wellness Center of OKC: Metrotech was a health and wellness center designed specifically for the elderly population of the Oklahoma City area to inspire longevity and healthy living. The five-week project required the creation of a floor plan that was easily accessible by both the patrons and the administration. The design team consisted of two architectural students and two interior design students (Bryce McCarthy, Beth Ann Rubin, Courtney Sawyer and Alyssa Smith).

1-OAK Banded Table Designed Especially fora the Ace Hotel
Perspective View
My table is a design inspired by and created especially for the Ace Hotel in New York City. This hotel is unique and eclectic. It is a blend of traditional and contemporary furniture with a mix of bright colors, unique accents, and unexpected decor. This hotel really caught my attention because it was so different from other hotels that I've seen. I made it my goal to design a table that I could see in this hotel's lobby setting. I also incorporated into my design the style of a John Houshmand chair that I discovered online and I fell in love with. By mixing these two opposing compositions together, I was able to come up with a design that I feel speaks for both concepts; the initial chosen chair as well as the Ace Hotel Interior Designs. Later paired with a Weego Home light fixture, this compilation of furniture and fixture style is unique and one-of-a kind.

GEMINI WALNUT TABLE
Gemini means “The Twins” in astrology. My table is representative of this because it consists of two mirrored or “bookmatched” pieces of crotched walnut. I first fell in love with these two walnut pieces. I then decided to use inspiration from the Gemini smbol used in astrology to influence the design of my table. I wanted to keep the pieces as untouched as posisble and alter them as litte as possible. This table is designed to go up against a wall as a console. I wanted to mix the industrial feel of the steel legs with the soft organic nature of the wood. Steel tubing was used for the legs and I specifically chose these pieces because they had been sitting outside for sometime and had accumulated large amounts of rust. I decided to keep a substantail amount of the rust visible because I wanted it to complement the color of the walnut. The goal was to make a unique piece of art out of found pieces. Alone, these components are not very appealing. But paired with their opposite, the hard and the soft, these two elements work together to make something very unique.

The Kaya Clinic Administration Pavilion project was a study to understand different types of furniture options and how they could be used to improve the work environment in an administrative area of a Healthcare Clinic. This area of the pavilion primarily contains administrative offices and understanding the needs of the employees was key in the design and orientation of the space. My design integrated several types of workstations that highlighted the benefits of personal space, shared space, and collaborative space. These spaces were completed with the use of systems furniture from Herman Miller and Steelcase. Most of the spaces were designed to be open and collaborative.

Efforts of Sustainability 1. Material with recycled content was used in many of the partitions. 2. Eco-Tex fabrics were used to upholster seating. 3. Low VOC paint was used on the walls. 4. Big Belly Solar compacting trash cans were used to reduce the amount of waste being taken out of the learning commons. 5. Crees cork flooring was used in a majority of the space. 6. Reclaimed brick was used to cover the walls and local materials were utlized to minimize our carbon footprint. 7. Natural sunlight reduces the need for artificial lighting and we made sure to take advantage of the windows. Four different areas were specifically positioned around the windows.

The Family Life Center was a project that required minimal structural renovation, interior modifications, and extensive cosmetic alterations. Located in Norman, Oklahoma, this center aimed at bringing together a small local community with similar spiritual beliefs. Focused around the aspect of family values and communication, the Family Life Center for the First Baptist Church of Norman was eventually renovated and is now the center of the Norman Baptist Community. The design team was comprised of two interior design students (Rachel Mosmeyer and Alyssa Smith).

EVOLVE in Design is a website that was created to share my ideas and passion for art, architecture, interior design, photography and more. I use edited photographs as the basis of most canvas art designs. All images are manipulated and layered to create a unique design. Each art image is digitally printed on a cotton-polyester blend canvas and professionally stretched on a wooden frame. I enjoy producing custom art pieces that allow for personalization of ideas and size customization.
