Jun. 2015 - Feb. 2016 I worked in PROAP Lisbon as a Landscape Architect. Here I had the opportunity to be involved in many challenging projects in a wide range of scales. Projects in Portugal and in the world. From Algarve to Luxemburg, Beirut or Morroco. I worked in different phases of a project from competition to construction phases. Developing plans, research, drawings, brochures were some of my tasks. I also participated in the production of exhibitions about the projects. Here I show three projects in wich I was more involved. One in Portugal, one in Luxemburg and the other in Switzerland, in three very different scales and phases.
Requalification of the coastal area Quarteira - Vilamoura Type: Project - construction phase Location: Quarteira - Vilamoura, Portugal Tasks: Detail and plan drawings Architects: Campos Costa Architects
01
Requalification of the coastal area Quarteira - Vilamoura
The project aims to promote a place that is at the moment empty to a requalified public space, a lively place which connects the urban centers of Quarteira and Vilamoura with the beach. One of the main objectives was the environmental requalification of the area recovering the structure of dunes. And a qualified urban space where many different uses come together such as commerce and beach related for example.

The project uses plants that adapted to coastal areas such as this one. This is a very specific environment with sand, salt and wind. For the illumintaion the system choosen is sustainable. The pavement choosen integrates with the structure of the dunes promoting a confortable place for people to walk and enjoy.

Square next to the tribunale penale Bellinzona Type: Project Location: Bellinzona, Switzerland Tasks: Concept development, brochures Architects: CDL Bearth Deplazes Durisch Nolli Sagl, Lugano
02
Square in Bellinzona
The square is located in the center of Bellinzona enclosed by the tribunale penale federale and the pretorio . The project seeks to turn this void into an effective public space hat relates to the buildings and to the city. There both the federal and the cantonal power are represent so this square works as a space of communal power. The concept proposes a clump of trees (15 Quercus robur), surrounded by a sculpture element such as a ring. The project is inspired in some art installations such has this tree ring from the sculptor Rui Chafes and others.
12 | Amรกlia Miranda
For the materials the proposal is inspired in the materials produced in the valleys arround Bellinzona. The tree in this project is used as a symbol of justice.

Quartier du Kiem Type: Project Location: Plateau de Kirchberg, Luxemburg Tasks: All the plans and drawings for development phase Architects: Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos S.L.P.
03
Quartier du Kiem
‘‘The proposal is based on the unique valorization of the existing ecosystems, articulating the space with the green urban system and embedding within the project the physical and biological processes that operate in that landscape. The coexistence of the new built group with the processes and natural elements forces to organize a spatial strategy, formalized by the creation of distinguished centres that are characteristic to the newly proposed character, forming a coherent and fully harmonized space.
16 | Amália Miranda
The open spaces with both public and private character respond either to the enclosed residential life or, within the space expansion, to the different dynamics of activities.’’

Feb. 2014 - Feb.2015 Working at VOGT was an important step for my career in a way that I got familiar with a different office reality and Landscape approach. During this time I had the opportunity to work in many different projects and a wide range of scales and phases integrating one of the office teams... With this internship I also concluded my Master, with the thesis about: Design and Representation in Landscape Architecture, the case of VOGT landscape architects, which was of great interest for the department of Landscape Architecture of the University of Porto once it reflects about the process in Landscape Architecture, with bibliographic research on the topic and practical cases of VOGT projects... Other important learning moments were the workshops in the Case Studio where we could learn new subjects or ways of doing, the collaboration in the exhibition in the Luma foundation, ‘‘Wanderkammer’’ and the Office Trip and the visits to projects built or under construction, which opens perspectives and make us understand the reality of the project and the efficience of the developed concept... Here I show two projects I was involved from the begining and were developed in the last year. I worked in other competions such as Kapuzinerkloster Stans with the architects Diener und Diener and projects in more advanced phases such as Swiss Re Next: the surroundings of the new building of the Swiss Reinsurance company by the lake of Zurich, preparing the construction documents and Munsterhof, a square in the center of Zurich.
Kurt-Hackenberg Platz Type: Project Location: Cologne, Germany Tasks: Research, model, diagrams and different options, plan, sections Architects: -

Kurt-Hackenberg Platz

Kurt-Hackenberg Platz is a square in the center of Cologne, next to the historical cathedral, this square is surrounded mainly by public buildings such as museums and the city asks for a proposal to develop this place. The process was very important in this project and for me a good learning by doing project. From the beginning we tried to consider all tha possible variants which would answer to the needs of a vibrant square in a city center, the selected elements were tested in a analogical 3D model and some options were left behind, after this study we showed the city two options for the design, which main features are the pavement, the benches, tables and fountains and the trees, creating a new address in Cologne where people come together and live the city. The final design proposes a central garden which integrates a bench design spetially design for this place, with a variety in its dimensions being used in many different ways according to the human body proportions.

Innovation Park Dubendorf Type: Competition - 1st Prize Location: Dubendorf, Switzerland Tasks: Research, Analysis, sketches, plans and sections Architects: Hosoya Schaefer, Zurich
05
Innovation Park Dubendorf
26 | Amรกlia Miranda
The project is to convert a militar airport in Zurich to an innovation Park, both with residential and business uses. The proposal first considers the project at a landscape scale, studying the solutions of existing forest extension, keeping it more agriculture related or bringing back the character from the past as a wet area. From this study the ideas develops zooming in scale, where the areas of forest and clearing were defined and the urban elements designed and places, in order to create a sense of place for the coming neighbourhood. Landscape structural elements such as a big pedestrian axis for recreation and views, a linear park contrasting city and landscape, promenades, avenues, squares, pocket parks. With the architects Hosoya Schaefer we got the first prize within other two teams and the proposal will be developed in the future.

Set. - Dec. 2013 Having time before starting at VOGT I found an internship of three months in Berlin. This was a great opportunity to understand the German approach to landscape architecture... Coqui Malachowska Coqui is a small office in Berlin owned by Joerg and Izabela Coqui respectively German and Polish Landscape Architects, in this office they develop nice projects mainly in Germany and Poland in different scales, many times they are in team with architects such as Ortner and Ortner... Working in this office was a good suprise for me, because even in such a short time I had the possibility to wrork in different types and scales of projects and collaborate in all the process and tasks of the office. I could also experience the life in a vibrant multicultural city as Berlin and learn from its public spaces, landscapes and gardens...
GEISBERGSTRASSE 6 - 9 Type: project, to be ready in 2016 Location: Berlin, Germany Tasks: Roof and Grounplans, sections and visuals Architects: Ortner und Ortner, Berlin

Geisbergstrasse 6-9
32 | Amália Miranda
Geisbergstrasse is located in the center of Berlin and the project aims to convert the old post and telegraph office buildings which were built in 1925 and are in outstanding condition, to a residential building. The project was to develop the roof gardens and the courtyards of the future apartment complex. The concept develops in three typologies in the three different outdoor spaces, according to its position and relation with the building we propose different planting and space composition which will give the spaces different character and this different ways of use. The ‘‘green’’ courtyard is enclosed by the building, it is a place of leisure and contemplation, developed in a formal design, dominated by grasses, ferns and hedges which contrast with the building bricks and provides also sitting places. The ‘‘red’’ is like a corridor with plants which show red color in its leaves or fruits at some point in the year, it has place for children activities. The ‘‘white’’ is turned to the outside but also to the balconies and it is dominated by white planting. Other aspects we worked out were the bicycle parking and the fire engine path, for example.

This project is located in the center of Berlin, next to historical areas and the district of the company: porcelain of the king which has a quite special urban character. In this project I participated mainly on the analysis and the development of the initial ideas. Many pictures were taken and analysis digrams were made, starting to generate the idea, relating space voids and fills historical context and views.

Garden of the XXI Century Type: Competition, 3rd Prize Location: Warsaw, Poland Tasks: Concept development, model, sketches and diagrams Architects: Ortner und Ortner, Berlin
08
Garden of the XXI Century
40 | AmĂĄlia Miranda
The project is located on the side of the historical Royal Parks in Warsaw, where a new museum will take place, from which the sloping roof will be the garden of the XXI century. Important criteria were the respect and relationships with the Royal Parks and also with the city, the central theme is the dichotomy Nature-Culture, it’s contrasts, relations and meaning in the XXI century. Sustainability, integration and public participation were also taken in consideration. The proposal plays with the duality between Nature and Culture, allowing for this conceptual reflection and showing it related it to space composition and Landscape Architecture approaches of the century. Going up the user will face this two realities, as the Park starts with woods which represent a more natural, less managed environment, where native plants grow almost freefly and dead tree truncks are left in place, changing to a meadow where art and recreation elements can be found.

During this time I also developed some work on my own, for example joined a competition in Prague in 2012 with some colleages, our entry was within the ten finalists of the competition and was exhibited in the streets of Prague. I developed some projects for my family or other clients like garden centers and collaborations with architects from my city. Since 2013 I am a member of the Board of the Porto’s core of Landscape Architects, in which I’ve been in charge mainly of Marketing and Communication developing within other initiatives, a biannual magazine. Besides that I believe that travelling and living in different countries also help us to grow as professionals, developing a critical view, broaden our horizons and inspiring our projects.
Personal Projects
Community Housing, Ilhavo
44 | Amรกlia Miranda
Project I developed with Green Trace Architects from Aveiro, Portugal, for the development of a new comunity housing in Ilhavo. The concept for the outdoors spaces enhances the neighbourhood feeling and leisure but tries to preserve the peoples backyards as private space in this way the proposal plays with public and private. The planting concept defines the space characters and leads to different places such as the communal area with a pool, the urban farming area or the tennis field. I developed many sketches with plan and perspectives, proposal for the species to be planted, etc...

Bridging Prague REQUIREMENTS, An international ideas competition for the Vltava River in Prague • Organized by reSITE Festival and ARCHIP • Competitors were asked to develop a new Vision Plan for this section of the riverfront that creates a unified experience linking cultural, recreational, ecological, historical and economic opportunities • design an intervention that will become a premiere destination along the river Vltava with easy pedestrian access to the historical core
46 | Amália Miranda
SINOPSE, The Vltava and its immediate context are not a part of everyday experiences of city residents as well as the cultural imagination. Our proposal seeks to claim the river as the first step for civic space and a territory for multiple uses: ecological, economic and social. Our approach stands for a new economy that values local production, urban agriculture, self-sustaining energy, art, sociability, and the most important, the people. We will make full use of the landscape as a productive, ecological infrastructure for enhancing social equality, generatic economic vitality, and regaining cultural identity. DESIGN CONCEPT, Elaborate new models for the city life is one of the goals. The strategy is flexible and therefore dynamic and sustainable. The inhabitants are the main players in this scene. This policy leverages underutilized and waste resources; finds efficiencies in collaboration and cross fertilization between urban and environmental systems.

Other projects While working and studying I had some time do develop some gardens for the family and also to be a member of the board of the Porto’s Landscape Architects Association for which I develop a biannual magazine covering contemporary landscape issues and articles from teachers and students reflecting about the practice. This together with travelling, going to workshops, museums is for me an important part of my professional development in a way that makes me see an interact with other landscape realities and do something that I love which is dinamize activities to make the students and the association to be up to date, curious, enthusiastic and envolved in the Landscape issues, spetially in my country.
