PROJECT REQUIREMENTS,

12 | Amália Miranda

40 ha of agriculture fields in the center of the city to transform into an urban Park • needs for recreation and leisure • urban agriculture • integrate the green structure • approach sustanabilty • find strategies to financiate the Park • face reality as a design challenge •

DESIGN PRINCIPLES,

In the north of the Park there’s already a green public space and a coffee, related to a sports complex so, it is more sustainable if the Park starts from here and has a strong connection with the city. The woods in the North were also preserved and improved in terms of vegetation, paths and views. The big clearing is the most important space in the Park which serves the needs for recreation and leisure of the population.

REQUIREMENTS,

An international ideas competition for the Vltava River in Prague • Organized by reSITE Festival and ARCHIP • Competitors were asked to develop a new Vision Plan for this section of the riverfront that creates a unified experience linking cultural, recreational, ecological, historical and economic opportunities • design an intervention that will become a premiere destination along the river Vltava with easy pedestrian access to the historical core

SINOPSE,

20 | Amália Miranda

The Vltava and its immediate context are not a part of everyday experiences of city residents as well as the cultural imagination. Our proposal seeks to claim the river as the first step for civic space and a territory for multiple uses: ecological, economic and social. Our approach stands for a new economy that values local production, urban agriculture, self-sustaining energy, art, sociability, and the most important, the people. We will make full use of the landscape as a productive, ecological infrastructure for enhancing social equality, generatic economic vitality, and regaining cultural identity.

DESIGN CONCEPT,

Elaborate new models for the city life is one of the goals. The strategy is flexible and therefore dynamic and sustainable. The inhabitants are the main players in this scene. This policy leverages underutilized and waste resources; finds efficiencies in collaboration and cross fertilization between urban and environmental systems.

Water Resilient City

REQUIREMENTS,

The project area is the eastern part of the city of Almere (a city below the water level created by the Dutch), which comprises the expanded area of Almere Oost as well as the yet-to-be-established ecological corridor, called OostvaardersWold. The challenge is to design the area in connection with the ecological corridor, regarding climate change issues in accordance with the Almere Principles and having the theme Water Resilient Areas.

26 | Amália Miranda

DESIGN CONCEPT, Being a city below water level, the water in Almere is being pumped out every day and every hour • development of a Plan for water resilient Almere using the design principles for water resilient cities on the right • Regarding climate

change it’s more sustainable to store the water in Almere to stimulate biodiversity and for uses in housing. Considering this, the design uses an old historical valley and tranform it into a new blue corridor next to the green corridor to store water, where biodiversity can flow and recreational routes are proposed • different typologies of living with diferent road system, density, green structure water system and energy: business and living, eco-living, luxury living, self-sufficient living - integrated in the multi core structure of Almere • different typologies of nature and storage: open water, forests, streams, pools, wetland, meadow, swamp • Above an image of the typologie business and living •

Water storage and purification

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Water cycle: Rain water is collected inside the residencial areas; waste water will be filtered and reuse for flushing toilet. Filthy water gets into the areas and redundant clean water goes back into the system. Animal species also profit from this water and nature zone.

Ecologic and recreational zone: A difference in water depth will increase ecologic diversity. Water and nature are used to prepare for climate change as well as for recreational activities. Living next to dynamic nature. Nature and water enter residential areas to create a sustainable water cycle.

Fresh groundwater is used to irrigate agricultural plots. Toom much pumping will bring up salt water. Fresh water storage puts pressure onto the water system to combate salinity.

Cooling Urban heat Island: Business parks know a high density. Big buildings generate a lot of heat. Large water areas combined with nature are used to cool the urban heat islands.

Building principle: Only buildings and roads are built on sand. Clay from streams is put on existing soil.

For the nature itself

Requirements. Individually choose a neighbourhood of the masterplan and detail it in terms or urban design

Design concept. As shown above: The wet area will be a good place to live and learn from the nature. The landscape is the stage so, the houses must all have views to it, they are the audience, in this way the housing becomes a ‘U’ shape and in the middle space it’s semi private. There will be no back gardens because the landscape is the garden but every floor will have balconys to enjoy the landscape. People in the surroundings must also enjoy this landscape in this way a deck will be implemented with few impact in the landscape, creating sort of a linear park so, everyone can take part of the landscape in a sustainable way. The existing landscape will be the connection between the diferent spaces in the area and also the connection between the areas in the masterplan like rome and forest areas.; green roofs in housing can improve this connection for biodiversity The landscape is a dynamic element through the year and a continuous feature to live.

REQUIREMENTS,

Redesign a square in a sunny space with views to the sea which actually has an old design that is not working, it is a tilted area, the space is too chambered for its dimension and it’s being crossed by car lanes and with cars parked illegaly everywhere.

DESIGN CONCEPTS,

38 | Amália Miranda

The main concept is fluidity, serving the needs of people who wants to stay for a while but also the ones passing by. The proposal aims to solve the space problems by creating new parking places and pleasant spaces for people. The Cadouços Square will be a place to stay, to contemplate or walk by with stunning views to the sea. The main feature in this concept is the walking path which is crucial to give continuity breaking the fragmentation of the space, in this path users can circulate from top to down in safe and with pleasant views. The shape of the path create harmony and its diferent lenghts where sometimes people can find a place to sit by the plants make it a pleasant place to walk. There will also be a coffe with esplanade and a great paved space for gathering with nice views to the garden and the lawn.

Therapeutic Garden

REQUIREMENTS,

In the center of the city of Porto, close to the Metro and close to the ‘Casa da Música’ where some new buldings will grow design a Park for the citizens and the neighbourhood taking special concern about the vegetation and having as main theme: Therapeutic Garden

42 | Amália Miranda

DESIGN CONCEPT,

The garden is thought for the different ages and conditions of a comunity, with special focus on the eldery people. We use the principle of reminiscence to stimulate the memories and life experiences of old people using old features and plants that bring good memories, for instance the recovery of the old train lines that passed by the area or the use of Olea europea or Citrus sinensis which are plants always in the memories of the portuguese people. The space provides many different spaces for recreation with easy instalation and maintenance and visual transparency important for safety, it is composed by a Coffe with esplanade where one can see the old train lines surrounded by aromatic and colored plants, the more residencial area between buildings with the same character, the paved surface where many things can be experienced like just observing, relax, socialize or make urban agiculture as a therapy in lifted boxes or play card games in the tables and also a sloped lawn for kids, in this areas the pavement is apropriated for blind people and some handrails with braille information about the park. In the north will be a Center of Fisiotherapy and Geriatric Reabilitation and the arboretum, with many trees and plants with sensorial and therapeutic interest the whole year and also a dynamic of slopes where exercises and fisiotherapy can be done and close by the center a naturalised lake to bring biodiversity and dynamics to the area . So this Park aims to be agreeable, usefull and accesible for the whole community and satisfy its interests.
