n 2036, Surabaya will be developed as an industrial city with various adaptation technologies that go into it, including in the field of architecture and urban design. New ideas and new policies in urban development will more easily emerge, have more opportunities to be realized and applied to the city of Surabaya. Referring to industrial areas or business centers in the city of Surabaya as Rungkut area and Basuki Rahmat, these two regions are expected to progress rapidly as the area of industrial and business center. This project takes place on Kampung Kue Surabaya, as one of the well-known home-industry place in Surabaya producing many cookies and delivered to many area even to outside Surabaya. With many activities inside the kampong and also the compact housing area, this site quite fits to represent the concept of omiting a boundary in a city. In 2036, we believe there will be much more remarkable purposes of Kampung Kue as an adaptation to Surabaya’s future changes and the community’s desire. There might be some new changes of maintaining the trading activities and living cycle, combining two different function of factory and housing into one area.

DESIGN IDEA ACTIVITIES IN KAMPUNG KUE The activities held in Kampung Kue basically are focused on the bake the cake, then sell them. The trading activity is the core activity of Kampung Kue. But to make it integrated in one whole area as Kampung Kue, we need to see new possibilities of experiencing trading activity in Kampung Kue, regarding to each the goals of join two functions of building in an area, or in particular, in one house. Besides is shown a graphic of the possibilities if programmings in Kampung Kue are joined into one.

NEW POSSIBILITIES

This diagram is shown as a result of merging the two main activities in Kampung Kue into one area. It is in one building, but separated as well. This may cause a different experience to the customers, as they will be inside the building, but being outside at the same time.

T

he existence of the Industrial Home Showroom and Culinary Center and Souvenirs owned by Bantul Regency as one of the public spaces in the Bantul area has been opened since 2014. But along its development, this object is still not visible and invites community initiatives to visit those who come cross it. From here, we could see that the object needs to be redesigned with a different design approach from the previous design and provide special functions to be attractive to the community. As and addition, the area is located on Jalan Raya Bantul-Yogyakarta, which is always crowded by people around, migrants, and tourists in Yogyakarta. This means, if the redesign concept succeed, it will produce a new program, a new public area, and maybe the region’s iconic place, that is different and valuable for the environment. The Winongo River has an important role in the life of the surrounding community and needs to be protected by its natural environment. But over time, more and more settlements have been built on the banks of the river so that the green environment becomes less and less which can result in flooding and narrowing of river bodies. From this background, the Winongo River has become a natural potential that can be optimized for its function, so that it can become an important point as a redesign object.

PERCEIVED ZONE In the perceived zone, visitors are invited to get to know the environment of the Winongo River in ancient times, which is serene with clear water, and well-preserved ecosystems. This is reinforced by a small diorama of plants around the river, a small aquarium to show the structure of the natural river bank, and other knowledges about the Winongo River.

CONCEIVED ZONE Whereas in the conceived zone, visitors are invited to understand the current condition of the Winongo River. The thing displayed is the same as in the perceived zone, but there is a little difference. This is used to arouse the sympathy of visitors to the river ecosystem. There is also a small audiovisual room with a seat of large stones so visitors can feel the atmosphere of the river better.

CHINESE QUARTER SURABAYA IN COLLABORATION WITH ‘DO IT YOUR SCALE!’; AN OPEN-STUDIO PROJECT HELD BY ARA STUDIO LOCATION CATEGORY AREA YEAR ROLE

: SURABAYA : URBAN MASTERPLAN : N/A : 2017 : RESEARCHER, DESIGN CONCEPTOR

D

o it your scale! is an Open Studio project from ARA Studio to support students’ ability to collect data and read potentials in the Old Town area of Surabaya; European Quarter, China Quarter, and Arab Quarter. Furthermore, this mapping is expected to support regional planning projects from ARA Studio and Surabaya’s Local Government. Chinatown or Chinese Quarter is a very densely populated area with active business activities from early in the morning until dusk in the afternoon. In this activity, there are many sub-activities related to one and another, as one of the examples is circulation in the Chinatown area. Circulation in Chinatown is very crowded, full, and hectic in active hours when store is opened. Not only at the main arterial road, Kembang Jepun street, but also in the small streets that branched out from that main road, such as Karet street, Panggung street, and Bongkaran street. The entire road is busy and packed with people and vehicles, from buyers, sellers, porters, rickshaws, cars, motorbikes, pick-up box cars, to delivery trucks that belonged to the expedition business. They are all in the same busy schedule, at the same time and place.

ZONING AREA IN PECINAN

FIRST OBSERVATION IN PECINAN From this circulation problem, there are three things we have observed regarding circulation problems in Chinatown: First observation: Vehicles that are in the area. Second observation: The activity of sending goods using a trolley. Third observation: Expedition business activities such as unloading.

Amalina’s Portfolio

23

VEHICLES IN PECINAN The number of vehicles entering and ‘parking’ in Chinatown is one of the elements that caused a dense circulation in the area. People tend to visit Chinatown using private vehicles rather than using public transportation.

Map of roads and their direction (enter or exit Kembang Jepun Street) in Pecinan

Congestion spot and heavy crowd of vehicles at the road for 3 hours, during 12.00-15.00.

BUSINESS IN PECINAN Trading activity in Chinatown is very complex, branching off, and growing bigger everyday. Lots of commodities are sold in this area, and their shops tend to have been grouped according to their categories. So that people are easier to find items that are needed. For example, we can find textiles shops in Bongkaran street and plastics and packaging shops in Songoyudan streeet. This can be seen from the map that illustrates the sales locations of each commodity.

The distribution of businesses in Chinatown tends to group and form a block with certain commodities.

24

Everything in Between

Throughout the Chinatown, there are many porters who use trolleys to deliver goods between stores, to the store to the buyer, or from the store to the expedition

PORTER'S ACTIVITY Activities of porters appear to be quite dominant in the Chinatown area. Every business or shops in Chinatown certainly has porters that work to deliver goods to the expedition site, to the another store, or o a buyer’s vehicle. Porters become the main users of Kembang Jepun street as they are freely moved in the free Chinatown area back and forth.

Zebra cross spot: There is only one zebra cross to facilitate the pedestrian in Kembang Jepun street.

Porters activity: The porters always walk across the street freely, without any safety equipments are worn upon them

SHIPPING AND LOADING-UNLOADING BUSINESS Loading-unloading activity of expedition business in Pecinan has been known as an inter-regional shipping business. This business has many trucks as a mode of transportation to deliver goods. The number of expeditionary businesses also affected the number of trucks in the Chinatown area. The trucks generally park on the side of the road, thus narrowing the width of the road for other vehicles to pass.

Expedition business in Chinatown: Many of the expedition businesses are located at the bottom of the Chinatown area, as we can see on the map.

Truck parking area map: The average road width is only sufficient for two car’s lane, but the road’s edge is widely used for truck parking.

Amalina’s Portfolio

25

RESULTS OF OBSERVATION There are some reasons that we found quite explaining why Kembang Jepun street or Chinese Quarter area is always crowded, from the clock’s ticking inthe morning until evening. 1. Private vehicles. Circulation in Chinatown is dominated by private vehicles compared to public transport vehicles. 2. Porters. The flow of porters in Chinatown is very intense and interconnected from one shop to another. 3. Trucks. The trucks from the expedition business are parking in every-quite-wide-spaces, including the narrow roads branched from Kembang Jepun street. This activity causes the small roads have a narrow(er) space that it makes a congestion. As a brief conclusion, the researcher team suggest a better pedestrian way design for porters and visitors, so that the porter’s flow wouldn’t affect traffic flow in Kembang Jepun street, and a better parking area and circulation time for trucks that will do loading and unloading activity for expedition ventures.

K GLAMPING LOCATION CATEGORY AREA YEAR ROLE

: YOGYAKARTA : HOSPITALITY : 30 SQM/UNIT : 2019 : CONCEPTOR AND 3D ARTIST

T

his project is located in Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta. In this project, the client wanted to have a glamping area since the first place that could cover the accomodation needs for tourists around Yogyakarta, especially who would come to Merapi Mountain or Kaliurang area. This client already had a vision about this upcoming project and had so many insights about glamping, hostel, bed and breakfast hostel, and a little bit about hospitality business for backpackers. So basically, as an architect here, I didn’t have to show many moodboard for the concept design. Long story short, we finally agreed on choosing container as the first cluster and main construction of the glamping area, but eventually it might be growing to a larger concept with the tent-area and conceptual landscape for the whole site. These images are the final result of the project’s vision. Every unit is consisted of 2-storey containers with a bedroom, a bathroom, a pantry, and a small living room inside. We use the small-size or 6ft container as the main construction here, both for the 1st floor and the 2nd floor per unit. As for the unit’s interior design, we developed the minimalist and modern concept, so we mostly applied the wood material on the floor, for the kitchen’s cabinet, the shelves under the stairs, the wardrobe, and as well for the bed. For the wall, we chose to make it simple with white colour from the gypsum board as to cover the heat insulation that will be applied inside the wall, and it will strengthen the modern concept of the room itself.

DANAU BUNGA TUJUH MASTERPLAN IN COLLABORATION WITH DUMAI REGIONAL GOVERNMENT

LOCATION CATEGORY AREA YEAR ROLE

: DUMAI, RIAU : URBAN MASTERPLAN : 230.074 sqm (23 ha) : 2018 : DESIGN CONCEPTOR

D

umai is a region in Riau Province that has a long river called Sungai Dumai and live as a quay-city that may attract tourists’ attraction. There are still many wild forests that can be developed into a good tourist destination here in Dumai. Here in this project, the architect tried to give new insight along Sungai Dumai (Dumai river), Hutan Wisata (forest park), and Danau Bunga Tujuh (Lake Bunga Tujuh). But here we will focus on Danau Bunga Tujuh masterplan that will be developed into big public park so that it will be one of modern and well-planned area in Dumai, a new object for the inhabitant around Dumai, and the tourists as well. Danau Bunga Tujuh is probably the biggest tourist attraction in Dumai, related to how big of this area, and how old of the area since the first time established. Now the development of Danau Bunga Tujuh makes it the biggest public park, a touristic place, but still using the local architecture and culture so that it can stand-out among the public area around Dumai, or maybe Sumatra.

32

Everything in Between

Amalina’s Portfolio

33

EXISTING SITUATION

D

anau Bunga Tujuh is already had a masterplan towards its development. This area is actually an already-built park with several buidings inside, like the open-hall with a tradisional design besides this paragraph. But there is no constant maintenance in this whole area. The gate (the castle-like building), is evenmore seen untouchable from its developer or management itself. The hall in the middle of the lake is not in a god condition and not quite accessible for people who came in to Danau Bunga Tujuh. From these two examples, the architect felt Danau Bunga Tujuh area should be redesign as a whole area, with new masteprlan, concept design, and approach. We all need to see Danau Bunga Tujuh as a representative tourism object in Dumai, that will not just attract local people around Dumai, Riau, and Sumatra, but maybe local tourist or international tourist. Then the architect started to redraw the zoning of Danau Bunga Tujuh area as seen in the next page.

34

Everything in Between

NEW ZONING PLAN

T

he whole area of Danau Bunga Tujuh was then redesigned as a new tourism object in Dumai and parted in five general categories. The biggest area is the lake itself, covered in blue layer. The second one is the green area, that is the area for nature spots or outdoor activity in nature such as lake park for picnic, small lake as water park, and so on. The third one is the yellow area as the centre spot, the main entrance, and maybe the main assembly point. The fourth is the red area, it is a less-crowded area with an amphitheatre and the management office is located there. Last is the grey area as parking and welcoming area of Danau Bunga Tujuh.

Amalina’s Portfolio

35

BIGGER DESIGN, BIGGER PLAN, BIGGER HOPE

H

ere is the final masterplan designfor Danau Bunga Tujuh. Bascially the architect was developing area as the whole new public park with the main attraction is the waterpark, so people could enjoy watersports there such as banana boat, parasailing, and boatski. The rest is about developing the complementary activity around the main attraction such as picnic area, waterpark, amphitheatre, and camping area. And as the main tourism object in Dumai, the architect put the traditional architecture of Sumatra as the main building on the area. It will not just give an authentic image of the area, but people will recognize it as the origin of Dumai’s traditional culture.

N

ot every housing unit has to be similar from one to another, with a monotone and we can say, an out-of-date design. This time, a developer from Purwokerto wants to have a little bit of experiment and development upon the new house design in its housing unit. Here, the developer let the architects do experiments on many materials and room programming so that the newest unit will differ from the previous houses. There are four types of the new housing units; type of 27 sqm, type of 36 sqm, type of 45 sqm, and type of 45+ sqm. All of those designs are consisted of two-storey floor and minimalist room programming. For example, the architect tried to make a wider living room area by not giving a solid wall or huge staircase in the middle of the room, and as substitute, the staircase is just taking place same as the bookshelf to separate the living room into two parts of room; the more public area, and the more private one. Besides, there is also an experiment over the facades over the four designs, such as with the wood panel, bricks, and concrete walls. Over all, these four house units are giving the most possible design to fit the market and developer needs, and still, have the best facade that can be applied regarding the room programming and material basis.

very advertisement in any media definitely needs a concept to attract the attention of the general public. Concepts are made to build the image of a product and attract public attention that the public will notive the product being developed. This concept is one of the marketing strategies by forming the product’s image from digital marketing. This is where I work as a graphic designer to build a new image of a food product and bring its original identity through poster design and digital branding, so that people may recognize and understand about this product with the characteristics of an image, a logo or colours attached to the product. By utilizing social media and being comprehend to public interest in a product’s image, an attractive graphic design of a product is needed to be created in order to give a special identity to the goods that being marketed.

nalog photography is the forerunner of today’s digital photography technology. Nowadays, there are many digital camera products that make it easier for users to get good capture images, as well as large storage space and unlimited time and place, such as the existence of online file storage space. However, with the development of this technology, the characteristics of shooting with roll-film and analog cameras actually become the main attraction of a photography itself. The current analog camera users in this era may be drastically reduced compared to analog camera users two decades ago. But the results of photographs from the washing of film in a dark room and a process that needs a long process, it produces many images with unique colors and characters, which are only owned by taking pictures from analog cameras and roll-film. That feature is what I have captured in my point-and-shoot camera shots in every chance that I have. The results of the analog photo give a unique character and color paletter, so it will not be easy to forget by anyone who sees it. Also, each picture gives a beautiful and pleasant impression, not only for the photographer, but also for each observer who come accross the picture.
