K

asargod the crown of kerala the case is something different from all these situations they unknowingly fell into this tragedic well where they cannot come back from their entire life. Endosulfan the harmful pesticide took many of their lives and kept disable throughout their life. The reason is the spraying of endosulfan through helicopter because of this the entire locality and the neighboring area also got affected.

As the aerial spraying has the maximum spreading power than the manual spraying because manual spraying cost more than the aerial sparying. Through the runoffs this chemicals travelled from one water streams to another so, this got infected to the human bodies very easily and made them ill forever. The most affected are the childrens and the unborn babies, rest of them where affected by dangerous diseses like cancer, nerological, Immunological & Reproductive disorders in humans and animals.

he showering of endosulfan continued for two decades and after understanding the seriousness of the problem it was too late it spreaded almost 40% of the kasargod district. The social activists, Public speakers, doctors and the citizens had protested for this but nothing happend till date any how the sparying stopped but the illness of the victims remained the same. The family members went to many officials door but they never bothered about this.

The mapping highlights the location of the site (muliyar) kasaragod district of kerala. he only need by their family members is to rehabiltate their childrens and other victims. For this some renowned NGO’s and many other socially initiated groups had come up with many workshops and buds schools for the children’s affected. The government itself had selected the site for the rehabilitation program for them but it couldn’t continued as their hope also took pause from thier dream project.

An architectural intervention can be a best solutions for this situations because it is more dealing with people and its dimensions. Knowing their requirements and designing according to thier spaces will help them to connect with build space and nature.

As creating more open spaces and inclusion of more natural constructions materials, techniques and natural ventilation may help them physically and mentally to recover fast and feel them comfortable. Including spaces like medications, educational and living will help them solve the commute problems. providing Sel-reliant opportunities and public actvities within the complex may help them in their economic stability and this spaces can be useful for not only the endosulfan victims but also other disabilities.

03 EXTENSION AND NATIVE OCCUPATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design project is aiming to cater to the infrastructural needs of the Kumartuli communities. It also intends to provide a socio-economical platform for the locals to earn and expose their distinct art to tourism and hence promote the long term preservation of the same.

PROJECT TYPE: Architectural Design (Sem-4) PROJECT YEAR: 2018-19 PROJECT NAME: Community Space for Artisans PROJECT LOCATION: Kumartuli, Kolkata, West Bengal

32

K

umartuli is a neighborhood of Kolkata that sits on the east bank of the Hooghly, four kilometers upstream of BBD Bag (Dalhousie Square). The locality is home and workplace to around five hundred artists and artisans, specialists and masters in the art of devotional sculpture in unbaked clay, who fashion the pratimas (deity-icons) for Durga Puja and other Bengali religious festivals. Kumartuli is the heart and focus in West Bengal for pratimashilpa (the meter of making deity-icons). It was founded after the mass migration of Kumbhakars (earthen-pot makers) from Krishnanagar, now in the district of Nadia (sixty-five miles north of Kolkata), to the metropolis and their subsequent colonisation of a vicinity they called the Tuli (locality) of the Kumar (potters). The map showcases the complete view of Kolkata and Kumartuli. Through this mapping and the images a considerable amount of site information is revealed.

33

Context and its Soul Through this context of Kumartuli it tries to manifest the complete language of the space and the activities that, how the context and culture of that space is reflected in the structure. This showcases the maze of narrow streets and lanes are packed with mritshilpis and pratimashilpis employing traditional techniques based on craft-lore passed down from one generation to another to create the devotional images integral to the celebration of the city’s principal religious celebrations.

34

35

Design Development: The design project considers all the required aspects for the artisans to work comfortably. The space is created according to the user’s circulation hierarchy and the analysis of the space. The space is created in such a way that it is accessible to each one of the users to make user-friendly and climate responsive structure.

Form Development:

1: Differentiating public and private space in terms of hierarchy of the users and the pattern of circulation.

2: Forming a connection between both the spaces.

3. Creating more open spaces for activities alongside the structure.

4: Forming the final form by creating a visual experience from all the sides.

36

37

The section denotes the language of the structure and life created by the users itself, which reflects the massing of the structure and manifests variety of activities in one frame.

It is surrounded by natural as well as man-made features. CIDCO playground and parking is to the south (front) of the site. Khandeshwar lake and canal are present to the right and back of the site. At the banks of the canal dense multi-store buildings can be seen. Residential building with commercial arcade at ground level. Hospital, temple, school, banks are easily accessible from the site. Khanda colony, Kamothe bridge across the canal, temporary fish and vegetable markets can be found along the canal’s banks. As this is a space for working professionals, the aim for this design is to make the space as comfortable as their own homes. For all these aspects of designing the climate and the context have took a major role in creating the spaces. The form is developed according to the user and climatic analysis.

STEP 1:

The alignment of the base is designed to get maximum ventilation and open space.
