EXTENSION AND NATIVE OCCUPATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design project is aiming to cater to the infrastructural needs of the Kumartuli communities. It also intends to provide a socio-economical platform for the locals to earn and expose their distinct art to tourism and hence promote the long term preservation of the same.

PROJECT TYPE: Architectural Design (Sem-4) PROJECT YEAR: 2018-19 PROJECT NAME: Community Space for Artisans PROJECT LOCATION: Kumartuli, Kolkata, West Bengal

K

umartuli is a neighborhood of Kolkata that sits on the east bank of the Hooghly, four kilometers upstream of BBD Bag (Dalhousie Square). The locality is home and workplace to around five hundred artists and artisans, specialists and masters in the art of devotional sculpture in unbaked clay, who fashion the pratimas (deity-icons) for Durga Puja and other Bengali religious festivals. Kumartuli is the heart and focus in West Bengal for pratimashilpa (the meter of making deity-icons). It was founded after the mass migration of Kumbhakars (earthen-pot makers) from Krishnanagar, now in the district of Nadia (sixty-five miles north of Kolkata), to the metropolis and their subsequent colonisation of a vicinity they called the Tuli (locality) of the Kumar (potters). The map showcases the complete view of Kolkata and Kumartuli. Through this mapping and the images a considerable amount of site information is revealed.

9

Context and its Soul Through this context of Kumartuli it tries to manifest the complete language of the space and the activities that, how the context and culture of that space is reflected in the structure. This showcases the maze of narrow streets and lanes are packed with mritshilpis and pratimashilpis employing traditional techniques based on craft-lore passed down from one generation to another to create the devotional images integral to the celebration of the city’s principal religious celebrations.

umbai the city of dreams and hope whenever we hear this the first and the foremost picture that comes to our mind is the Taj hotel, the Gateway of India, etc. It is located as the landmark of this area, which is very famous for tourist attractions and due to this a lot of different senses are produced like the sounds of the peoples, birds and the sea-waves and the mesmerizing feel of the cool air flowing from the Arabian Sea. Every building has one or the other story which it is trying to say with its building materials and texture. It acts as a visual scenery for this area because of the vast sea and the beautiful heritage building structures and different people coming from all over the world. It can be crowded as you can see the people taking the photos and the photographers roaming behind the tourists. The next most noisy place is the market area. The loop started from the Regal cinema and ended at the same spot, through this loop the experience of the five senses was entirely different from point to point and different area. In this is a frame all the aspects that contribute to the end product is depicted.

When does architecture becomes sensual? What is concealed is always enticing and often delightful When walls and openings create a rhythm of concealment and openness, architecture becomes irresistible. It has nothing to do with style. The allure of not being able to see everything all at once can be as powerful in a pavilion as in an apartment. A wall of glass that exposes the whole show to anyone who’s interested is impressive, but it can’t compare to the excitement of a glimpse through the gaps. The interplay between open and closed is the Scene at the heart of architecture. What makes the city active? A healthy, active city is one that is continually creating and improving opportunities in the built and social environments and expanding community resources to enable all its citizens to be physically active in day-to-day life. Physical activity has four measurable dimensions Frequency of the activity Intensity of the activity Time, the duration of the activity Type of activity. This representation shows the different senses and the aspects which brings the space to life. The different colors and its canopy depicting the density of the spaces and the activities which leads to the senses.

O

riginally named as Sri Aurobindo World Centre for Human Unity (hence acronym) is located in the Bharat Nives Grounds in the International zone of the Auro ville city complex. The SAWCHU building is today used for a wide variety of Auroville-related meetings. Community Interaction and also houses some office space. It is a very contemporary building, built In 1997 as an offering to the country on the occasion of Sree Aurobindo’s 125th birthanniversary. It was built by Architects Anupama Kundoo and Sonali Phadnis. As we enter the SAWCHU pavilion which is surrounded by trees and greenery. We can feel the building’s openness as a welcome to all the visitors, with open hands that embrace and bring about comfort, happiness and warmth. The surrounding open amphitheater like space gives it another dimension of openness and welcoming gesture, but you cannot feel the humidity or heat inside the pavilion because of the surrounding green cover and a pavilion with natural ventilation, rather you feel quite cool in it. The structure is free flowing and organic in its conceptual approach and seems as if not built but rather grown from the peaceful earth’s womb. There are small bridges on the four sides covering the gutters and three of them leading to the open amphitheaters around the pavilion. The flooring of the loan is also in radial pattern looking as if rays are emerging out of the circle at the center formed by the arches of the rays surrounding it and are covered with tiles. The colors of white plastered walls and Grey colored exposed RCC paints the structure. This structure is bewitching in its ambiance and feel, making you susceptible to its charms and warmth. Having studied it for two whole days makes it feel like home and unable to part with it, such is its design and should be of any structure meant to charm and capture the soul and heart of its visitors.

1. The circular roof slab being a strong element of the building has a very dynamic look, emphasized by its lighting pattern of lights, like an illuminated disc at night.

2. Water bodies around the hall maintaining the quiet and calm atmosphere of the building. The waterspouts of the roof slab deliver the natural water to the water body on four sides.

3. The structural members, being important elements of the design, contribute to the overall aesthetics of the building. The structure is an interesting combination of bold curves of the roof and floor, which are linked by sharp and angular columns with ‘aerodynamic’ beams.

STORY OF LIFE ABOUT Ar. Habib Rahman was born in 1915 in Kolkata, Bengal in Undivided India. He was an engineer, musician and photographer and played a pivotal role in the architectural landscape of the country in the early decades after India’s independence.

PROJECT TYPE: Humanities (Sem-5) PROJECT YEAR: 2018-19 PROJECT NAME: Knowing One-self (Ar. Habib Rahman)

76

Ar. Habib Rahman (1915-1995) Design Philosophy “A Building becomes architecture when it not only works effectively but moves the human soul” Habib Rahman, one of the visionaries who laid the foundations of the architectural vocabulary of independent India by playing a pivotal role in shaping the modern architecture of Delhi. Habib as an engineer, architect and a musician, a fusion of which is evinced in the unique purity clarity and vibrancy of his architectural purists. The government of India recognized his contribution in nation building and awarded him the Padma Shri in 1956 and the Padma Bhushan in 1974, and JK Cement Chairman award for lifetime achievement in1995. Architectural Practice Habib Rahman introduced the Bauhaus style in the Indian context. His works range from office buildings to institutional building, low rise row building to high rise housing building. He had emphasized on functionality, minimal decoration and use of modern materials in the construction were the key features of his rationalist approach to designing. He had used the Indian architectural elements incorporating with the Bauhaus style of architecture like as follows; jalis, chajjas, dome, overhanging roof, horizontal and vertical louvers etc. The column and the cantilever inspired by F. L.Wright. Rahman was trying to break away from Gropius’s influence and form his own style.

Image 03 –Gandhi Ghat Memorial, Kolkata, West Bengal (Courtesy: artsy.net)

77

Project Description Indraparstha Bhawan is designed on the basis of Tagore philosophy as Nationalism in spirit and reflecting aristocratic folk paradigm. Rahman’s plan consist of two independent bocks pf contrasting design. An eight storied block with a plan resembling a drum (mrindungum) design to house a UN agencies offices. Its structural columns are expressed as bold vertical line projecting out of the curved exterior walls the windows between these columns are staggered on alternate floors to create an interesting pattern. With the exception of continuous vertical slits down the Centre the end walls facing east and west are windowless. A central service core houses the stairs, lifts and toilets apart from this the ground floor is kept entirely free for parking. The shorter side of the walls are placed as two long vertical panels gently twisted towards Centre demarcated by along slit window, gives the impression of an open book which have been used to place abstract murals in relief by none other than M F Hussain. This building stands out to narrate the story of the story of the socio-Eco-political situation prevailing in 1965, and comparing with UGC building, the journey traveled by country over a span of 10 years can be seen. The building of first decade, the functionality and rigid budgeting, where as in the second decade, the functionality and budgeting gave some for free expressions in the forms as well as ornamentations like murals and relief in elevations.
