AHCSA is the peak body representing Aboriginal health and substance misuse services, and Aboriginal health advisory committees in South Australia at state and national levels. Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers with appropriate Aboriginal health programs.
The Wiltanendi (a Kaurna word for ‘becoming stronger’) project is a two-year demonstration pilot program, designed to respond to an increase in drug use among young Aboriginal people in the Adelaide metropolitan area. The project is jointly funded by the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AERF) and the South Australian Government, through a policy partnership. The Department of the Premier and Cabinet, through the Social Inclusion Unit, has oversight of the project. Wiltanendi is administered through the Department of Health, Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA).
Historical Note The Kabvin De Cuascar ruins in the story draw their inspiration from Chavin De Huantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site set in the Andes Mountains 250 km north of Lima, Peru. This large pre-Inca site was built around 900 BC by the Chavin civilization who used it as a religious and ceremonial centre. The stone goddess in the story, ‘Banzon’ is loosely based on the Chavin people’s central deity, ‘Lanzon’, who had a feline head and a human body. ‘Lanzon’ is located in a central chamber at the end of a series of underground passageways underneath the old temple of the Chavin people.
If you get caught with drugs overseas: • Countries like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam impose tough penalties, including the death penalty and life imprisonment • In some countries, the possession of small quantities of so-called ‘soft drugs’ can also attract jail sentences or heavy fines • As soon as you arrive in another country, you are subject to that country’s local laws • Ignorance of local laws is not a valid defence • Following an arrest you have the right to contact the Australian Government, but consular assistance cannot override local law, even where local laws may appear harsh by Australian standards.
