t’s been a little disorienting being knee-deep in merino wool, warm coats and sturdy boots over the past month putting together this magazine as we’ve all continued to bake under endless blue skies and soaring temperatures. While it’s usual for the stores to be filling with wintry garments while our focus is still on floaty dresses and jandals, this epic summer has made it all the more jarring. But eyes front. Winter lies ahead. Before you know it Daylight Savings will be over and we’ll be curled up in front of the fire – or, to be more environmentally friendly, the energy efficient heat pump – cuddling a glass of pinot. Fend off the chill by embracing this season’s amazing, vibrant sunburst colours, or surrender to it by wrapping yourself in wools, leather and fur Game of Thrones-style.
3.
4.
OK, maybe that’s a step too far, but winter fashion may just be the best thing there is about winter.

When it comes to winter wardrobes, Kiwi women are famed for embracing basic black. But this winter’s collections come in a riot of sunburst shades.
If going all orange is a little too confronting, maybe start slowly with a pop of colour in a coat, bag, shoes or sunglasses. But we bet by mid-winter you’ll be head to toe in shades of orange, red, yellow and gold. If that’s not your favourite palette, there’s plenty of brights around at the blue, turquoise and green end of the spectrum too.

lace and floral
The lady-like trends of floral and lace have been on the fashion landscape for a while now and they’re just as strong for winter. Although the cooler weather has inspired darker, bigger, and bolder florals and lots of all-over lace instead of just trim on the edges. Style them up with tougher pieces in denim or leather, or opague tights and chunky boots to stop it all getting too frothy. Helen Cherry Katarina dress

c h e c k s s t r i p e s If you want to zhush up your winter wardrobe but aren’t quite ready to go for the season’s brightest colours, try the trend for checks and stripes. 8.
It’s a way to add subtle hints of colour and interest without making people’s eyes water when they admire you walking by. And there’s plenty of variation on the theme from plain black and white stripes, to big bold checks as well as classics like houndstooth and tweed, which make you feel you should be rubbing shoulders with Wills and Kate at Balmoral.

dress A couple of good dresses are a must for the winter wardrobe. And while you can never go past a tailored black number that will take you from the office to the world, there’s always room for a little colour and/or texture. And don’t think your winter frocks must be heavy and chunky, just layer with some toasty merino and boots.

b o o t i t One good pair of boots can be the foundation on which your winter look is built. Several good pairs of boots – even better. And there’s plenty to choose from, whether you want ankle boots, mid-calf, or knee-length, super high, wedged or flat but the biggest way to express yourself via your feet this season is colour. No longer are boots restricted to black and neutrals. How about bright reds, mauves and purples? It’s a great way to embrace this winter’s love affair with brights, without going the full monty.

nigel’s top tips for great winter hair:
• Try not to over-wash your hair. Keep the lather at the roots only, and conditioner on the ends only. • Let your hair dry naturally at least halfway before blow-drying, and don’t use the “high speed, high heat” setting as you’ll singe the ends, causing breakage and dullness. • Keep hair shiny by putting it into a ponytail, adding a good hair treatment, and wrapping it into a bun for the day, or while you’re at the gym.
Hair guru Nigel Russell, creator of Holistic Hair, has some tips for keeping your hair in tip-top shape over winter.
• Watch what you eat! Avoid comfort foods in winter as they can produce excess oil and your hair will become flat and limp. Your skin suffers too.

air is more sensitive than we give it credit for. It’s a barometer for the state of our inner and outer health. Our habits, diet, lifestyle and general wellbeing differ dramatically season to season and these changes, along with those in our environment, are reflected in the condition of our hair.
• Ease up on the hair straighteners. Allow hair to dry naturally if at all possible and quit ironing all the goodness out of it. • Go for more solid colours in winter, such as chocolates, mid browns or copper reds if it suits your skin tone. Solid colours reflect light and shine way more than a head full of highlights.
In summer we’re outdoors getting plenty of natural light, vitamin D and fresh air, and if you are using the right products your hair should be vibrant bouncy and relatively healthy.
Recommended products

Care for the hair
brief
Kiwi beauty company Trilogy has released its first haircare range with two dynamic shampoo and conditioner duos: Trilogy Refresh and Shine (for everyday use on all hair types) and Trilogy Smooth and Nourish (for colour-treated and heat damaged hair). The key ingredient in all four products is Keracyn, a new high performance natural active extracted from the second-year leaves of globe artichokes. All four products retail for $24.90 each.

Iconic NZ menswear brand Barkers has dipped its toe into footwear for the first time. The company has been in expansion mode since its 40th birthday last year and head of merchandise Paul Biddle says it’s been considering a move into footwear for sometime. “We’ve been working on the range for a while now. Footwear is easy to get wrong, so we spent months testing and refining to make sure we got it right.” The range of five styles is 100% leather and priced at $199.99.

London Fashion Week first
Rose oil in Ethiopia
One of NZ’s premier plus-size labels, Christchurch based Lucabella, has returned from a triumphant showing at the inaugural Plus-Size London Fashion Week.
Dr Hauschka Skin Care has just announced its latest fair trade initiative in Ethiopia working with the Terra PLC Damask Rose Farm as source for Damask rose essential oil. Seven years ago, Dr. Hauschka provided Ethiopian farmer Fekade Lakew with rose cuttings and introduced him to a consultant to train and advise on biodynamic cultivation methods. In 2012, Lakew distilled his first batch of rose essential oil and initiated the biodynamic certification process. Once certified, his farm will be the sole certified biodynamic source of essential rose oil in Africa. The skincare brand has committed to purchasing all Fekade Lakew’s rose oil for ten years, and 60-70% after that. This ensures the farm has time to establish itself without becoming dependent upon a single customer for all its revenue in the long term.
The event was held alongside the mainstream LFW in February and Lucabella designer Keri Rapley says: “It just couldn’t have gone better.” She says though there are other plussize fashion weeks around the world, the London event was at a new level. With press and bloggers in attendance from Europe and the US it was a fantastic opportunity to boost the Lucabella brand, Keri says. “We weren’t sure how the week would be received but it was hugely positive. We would definitely do it again.”

Conquering the Mount Wallis is the newest boutique fashion label to add a flair to the Mt Maunganui shopping landscape, with the opening of a stylish new store. The black walls and ceilings lend a decidedly sleek, chic look to the space, which also includes designer Anna Mountford’s design studio. So, as well as being lined with all the new season garments from labels such as Ketze-ke, customers can also see Anna busy on her own Wallis label. “Customers can come in and look around, stop for a chat and see us at work,” Anna says. “It’s a really unique place to shop and work. I think it connects to who we are as a brand.”
Honey, I’m home Rotorua’s world famous Polynesian Spa is marking the onset of autumn with spa treatments base on the healing properties of New Zealand manuka honey. Try the Honey Walnut Polish and Aix Spa massage combo, where your skin is gently exfoliated followed by massage with organic coconut oil under warm water jets. Other treatments incorporating manuka honey include the Rotorua Mud Body Replenishing wrap, Revitalising Back Therapy and the Timeless Facial. It seems to us the only challenge would be refraining from just eating the honey! All Polynesian Spa treatments include hot mineral bathing in the deluxe Lake Spa pools. www.polynesianspa.co.nz

mart casual. It has become such a ubiquitous dress code, but what does it mean? When used as a guideline for workplace attire, it gets even trickier. How do you carry off “casual’’, yet make it ‘‘smart’’ enough to maintain the right element of professionalism?
7.
4.
One of the biggest mistakes New Zealand men make when trying to dress “smart casual” is wearing a suit and formal cut shirt but without a tie. Don’t do it, it just looks like you’ve forgotten your tie. Instead, get yourself a pair of well-cut trousers and a jacket of different cloth and a more casual cut. Make sure your shirt collar is large enough not to get buried by the jacket. Smarten it up with good leather shoes. If you want to add personality with a splash of colour, try other accessories such as coloured socks, a silk pocket square or cufflinks. If you’re going more casual, but still smart, make sure your jeans or chinos are clean and crisp, perhaps with colour. Then get a collared shirt and add a smart touch with a slim tie. These can clash in pattern, but make sure there is some colour coordination. Finish it all off with a V-neck or casual jacket. Because the tie adds some formality it smartens up the casual.

Why the tie? With the days of the loud pinstripe suit and multi-coloured shirts all but a distant memory, the classic navy suit and the crisp white shirt are smartening up the streets. This cleaned-up canvas has heralded the return of the tie as the brushstroke of colour. Workshop brushed cotton work shirt and Big Slub Selvedge jeans
To avoid becoming a bland uniform, the tie is now the versatile change-out number that allows for individual expression. Instead of drowning in a sea of navy, use different ties to change your look. Swanndri The Rocks moleskin jacket
The options for ties are endless, but if you’re after something ripe for the season, the new winter colour palettes take inspiration from the Earth.

here’s a new trend in menswear – mixing prints; wearing checks and stripes together. But how do you manage it without looking as though you got dressed in the dark? We asked the experts. The Panel at Barkers say: “The key to mixing prints this winter is to not get caught up on things matching – numerous runway shows have proven that there really are no rules. The trick is to own the look and act like you know what you are doing (even if you don’t).
www.swanndri.co.nz
Here are the Barkers guidelines: 1. Always wear one solid colour. We recommend using a plain suit as a base and then opting for interesting shirt and tie combinations. 2. Try matching different prints e.g. stripe shirt with polka dot/printed tie. 3. Less is more; aim to mix one subtle print and one bold print so they complement one another. Fashion is about having fun– so don’t over-think it. Feel free to improvise and remember to incorporate a bit of your own personality into each look.
Fellini warms up winter with soft and earthy tones from the spice market – green cardamom, saffron, smoked paprika.

Meanwhile, Working Style creative director Eddie von Dadelszen says: “Choose checks of varying proportions which complement one another so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a jigsaw puzzle.”
