WATER RETENTION FACILITY Inspired by the fluctuation of rainwater amounts from month-to-month, the facility creates an interactive component with visitors and residents by collecting the rainwater in flexible fabric containters which and contract based on the usage of the water and the amount of rainwater on site. People will be able to witness their consumption habits.

Scattered across the American landscape, relics of our past stand vacant, deteriorating with every rainfall. The chemicals which make up these relics have become part of our water cycle leaching harmful contaminants into our drinking water.

The project looks at the wholistic cycle of birth and decay of buildings and crafts an architecture that is transient. The necessities of today will not necessarily be those of tomorrow thus the project posits the idea of architecture that not only can be assembled quickly and easily to maintain structural integrity, it is responsive to the changing nature of our cities.

Rooted in the earth, the existing brick buildings serve as monolithic bases upon which the building grows vertically. Wrapped with a crystalline structure, the greenhouses form a buffer between the elements and the core of mixed use spaces within the building. Acting as a filter, the facades and roofs of the buildings will absorb and cleanse the water from rainfall. Before the introduction of the Gowanus Canal in the 1840s, the Dutch had colonized the area harnessing the aerable land into agriculture land. The act of feeding from the land can not longer take place due to the immense inundation with chemicals and toxins. The tidal marsh, once remediate, can then function for the next generation to fit their needs. The architecture lifts the process of producing food off of the ground and encapsulates it in a “greenhouse” wall and roof system which allow for harvest of food year round. The harvesting of food creates a community ritual of gathering for the stewards of this historic site. It is up to the future generation to create responsive architecture that proliferates the entire Gowanus Canal.

Eutrophication of the Gowanus Canal has led to a detrimental seascape where an accumilation of phytoplankton and algae have decreased the oxygen levels which are necessary to the fostering of plant and fish life.

Heavy metals, excrement, petroleum-based chemicals and other harmful pollutants fill the Gowanus Canal. Once these are either capped or removed through dredging, microbes can be released into the soil to finish the job. Mycelium and Oysters can be used to harvest pollutants from water.
