Year 11 Calendar Highlight the tasks which apply to you. Mark them off as you complete them: Autumn Term 2011 All Students:

Discuss your options with your teachers, parents or carers, friends Research your career ideas, if any, and check if you need specific qualifications or courses Discuss your predicted grades with your tutor and subject teachers If you hold a statement of educational needs, make sure you see an LDD Employability Adviser this term, who will help you with your choices and produce a Moving On Plan (ask about this at school)

College:

Look at local colleges, their on-line prospectuses and make a note of open evening dates Draw up a shortlist of favourite courses, entry criteria and questions you need to ask Attend college open evenings, talks in school or taster days this term If you are in a Brighton 11-16 school, make your application to BHASVIC, Varndean College or City College before Friday 2nd December (or earlier if your school has set an internal deadline) to meet the requirements of a guaranteed offer (see Common Application Form guidelines) If you attend a school with a sixth form, it is recommended that you also apply (for BHASVIC, Varndean College or City College) before Friday 2 nd December Look at the college information about the 16­19 Bursary. If you plan to apply, make a note of the deadline and apply on time – funds may be limited.

Apprenticeships:

Interested in apprenticeships? Find out more on-line at apprenticeships Attend the city-wide Apprenticeship event at the Amex Stadium on 23 rd November. Find out about this at your school Attend any talks or events in your school which promote apprenticeships

Spring Term 2012 All Students:

Whether seeking full or part-time work, draft your C.V. and application letters this term. You may know what you want as a first choice. Do you have a back-up plan?

College:

Attend interviews. Make sure you have read up about your chosen course. You will be asked ‘why do you want to study this subject?’ – think about your answer Wait for offers. Keep a record of any contact and make sure you reply to any offers made No offer? Act now. Let your tutor know that you need more help with your plans.

Apprenticeships:

Research local training providers for apprenticeships and register with them Register with the National Apprenticeship Service Identify potential local and national employers. Send your C.V. and a covering letter to local firms (or telephone). Take details of how and when to apply for the larger, national employer schemes Attend interviews and aptitude tests (for some types of work) with training providers if invited

Summer Term 2012 All Students:

From Friday 29th June onwards, if you don’t have a college offer or are still seeking an apprenticeship/job, you can start using the Youth Employability Service If you hold a statement of educational needs and have no offer or clear plans, you can still receive support from your LDD Adviser If you don’t have an offer of college or employment, do you want to apply for Foundation Learning? There are many courses on offer and you can usually make a late application Thursday August 23rd. GCSE Results day: Good luck!

College:

You may have been invited to a taster or pre-enrolment day. Make sure you attend If you don’t meet the grades for your college course, ring the college to discuss. The college may be able to offer an alternative course

If you have applied to training providers, make a follow up call to ask about vacancies and remind them you are looking If you have found an employer on your own, make sure they have the contact details of local training providers (who can set up your training and qualifications) Check any emails from the National Apprenticeship Service and apply for vacancies if interested Start applying to vacancies on: www.brightonandhovejobs.com/apprenticeships
