OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY OXLEY HALL Oxley Hall and it’s neighbor Pomerene Hall are being renovated for The Ohio State University by Acock Associates Architects. My job while working their for the summer was to start making the Revit models for these two projects. Myself and one other coworker worked on the Revit model for Oxley Hall; I built the shell and made project specific families while my coworker focused on the smaller details and getting the construction documents ready. I also assisted on the schematic design documents and worked on the project standards for the firm.

AXIOM AFFORDABLE HOUSING Axiom is a schematic project located in Long Beach, California. The program for Axiom is to include retail and a lobby space on the ground floor with residential units above, which will be leased out as affordable housing units. The project also includes a large square footage of community space, green gardens, edible gardens, and fitness centers to enrich the area. The green space steps up from the second floor to the fourth floor following the stepping of the building, giving each floor a unique green space for the tenants.

EXHIBITION GALLERIES COLUMBUS, INDIANA The exhibition galleries main concept is driven purely by the site on which it sits. Being a narrow and long strip of property, the idea is to have two formal ends on either side holding the building strictly to the site, which will carry all the program needed for the building. A ramp then connects these two ends, allowing the exhibition spaces to peel off and allows visitors to wonder through the building and the art as they make their way up to the top. A rooftop garden greets the visitors at the end of the circulation path, which allows them to access the roof and have views of the street below.

LYCEUM COMPETITION: ILLUMINATING THE TERRACE The Audubon Terrace, once an enriching cultural space, is now in need of an energizing and enlivening intervention in order to bring the community back onto the site and to activate the terrace as a vital civic space. The proposed library is a beacon that will draw people towards it both down the length of the terrace and as it emerges from the 157th Street façade.
Two grand stairs, one interior and one exterior, lead visitors up and through the site, connecting 157th Street to the Terrace, thus making it a more accessible and dynamic space. Glazing covers most of the East façade, allowing visual connections into the building and lighting up the terrace and the street at night. Heavier stone is used strategically to reference back to the Terrace’s roots and architectural expression.

BOB EVANS NEW LOOK: CLEAN ENERGY Bob Evans is investing in the redevelopment and new look of their restaurant. Wanting to attract the younger generations, our team envisioned a Bob Evans that consists of lighter and healthier meals with the concept of a fast casual dining experience or a studious environment, lending students to either come and go, or stay for lengths of time. The restaurant would also explore environmental design such as green roofs and growing produce on site in the greenhouse.

KAIRA LOORO COMPETITION: DEEP IMPRESSIONS In the village of Tanaf, you will find people whose daily lives are deeply immersed in spiritual culture. When introducing a sacred precinct at the center of the village, this place needs to emanate their vibrant way of life in order to become a place of gathering and transcendence. Whether a visitor wants to filter through the vaults marching along the perimeter with the colorful shade of the seraphic canopy above, or proceed more directly down the perforated brick corridor, these places shape an interstitial junction between the earthly village of Tanaf and the sacred space of the prayer hall. The pattern of the canopy slips down to become a perforated laterite wall, which partially encloses the corridors, while solid laterite walls are used to encompass the prayer hall for a more serene and shrouded experience, with a woven thatched roof overhead. Low openings in the solid laterite allow for visual curiosity between exterior and interior, as well as aid in passive ventilation for the main interior space. The thatched roof is lifted off the laterite walls to allow airflow through the space and a celestial experience of light pouring in from the sky. The chosen materiality incorporates both tectonic techniques with tied joinery, as well as stereotomic definition produced by the laterite. Juxtaposed, these construction methods help to emphasize the worldly and spiritual junction to be found in the sacred space.

INNOVATION TYPEOLOGY THE NETWORK As a studio ran project, the study of what an innovation center is or could be was split up between four different ideas. The Network is what will be described here.
The Network focuses on the connection and engagement of a campus’s vast resources. Nodes create a dynamic response to the departmental strengths within, as well as to foster collaboration in an interstitial place between distinct disciplinary specialties. The nodes are physically individual, but function as a woven fabric throughout the University, allowing cross-pollination of knowledge. This presents an opportunity for realworld companies to rent workspaces and utilize the University’s rich intellectual and physical resources. As the companies advance investigations with research specialists and faculty, students participate and learn from the collaboration through coursework. The requirement of resident companies to teach a course while present on campus aims to narrow the gap between education and practice. The additional innovation workshops located throughout the campus promote day-to-day interdisciplinary work and create a stronger alliance between faculty, students, and commercial enterprises.
culture: Works as an informal culture due to the low security and collaborative nature of the program pieces. spatial strategies: Using specific zones to dictate defined functions, thus creating a collection of defined spaces. material: Promotes the backgrounding of material in collaborative environments, freeing innovation from contextual influence, while foregrounding material in individual settings, creating comfortable personal spaces. daylighting: Employs full daylight to create collaborative workspaces and attenuates daylight in order to create individualized workplaces. acoustics: Dictates acoustic qualities through the implementation of specific ceiling conditions; informal exposed ceiling systems promote collaborative spaces, while individual workspaces are defined with more intimate finished ceilings. technology: Has available technology Infrastructure, yet most spaces are equipped for interactive collaboration.
