A MESSAGE FROM THE
Command Sergeant Major
Buenas yan Hafa Adai
to the families, friends, and to the Soldiers of the 1st 294th Infantry Regiment,
Our continued success would not be without the effort and support of the Soldiers and their families. Since taking on the responsibility as the Command Sergeant Major I have witnessed nothing but the utmost professionalism both up and down the chain of command and through their top notch leadership. Senior leaders, subordinate leaders, and the Soldiers have instilled the spirit of the Chamorri Warrior and still perform exceptionally well regardless of the on-going COVID environment. Whether it’s virtual and or physical training, accountability for every individual Soldier remains at a priority. For this, I thank you all for maintaining yourselves and the seamless hard work you commit and bring forth.
We are never without a challenge and we will never quit. This last quarter has been a continuous challenge but we as a battalion push to remain resilient and accomplish any tasks given. Throughout this quarter we continue to support the COVID vaccination mission and will do so in order to maintain our island’s health and safety. The battalion staff has strengthened the relationship with our active duty counterparts the 2nd 27th IN REGT Wolfhounds and continuously improving that relationship through their staff training. Simultaneously, we have made our way to prep, compete, and take the helm for the Best Warrior Competition (BWC) 2022.
With this I’d like to recognize SGT Cruz, Nicole for her motivation and strive in taking the win during the state level BWC and a big good luck during the regional competition. More opportunity will be given to all the Soldiers to prepare for such training, missions, and competitions every year. It is important that we seek such opportunities as I see that it supports the unit morale, their energetic competitive nature, and brings a positive outlook on the Guam Army National Guard as a whole. Although we have accomplished much we still have more that will follow. These accomplishments are the stepping stones to the training events forthcoming such as Annual Training 2022 in California. Yes, Camp Roberts still remains as one of our best stomping grounds and has always provided the 1-294th with the best training environment we need. It is realistic, stressful, and brings out the best of every unit in the battalion. We are never without a challenge and we will never quit. Thank you for the opportunity to be your servant leader and I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year 2022.

Soldier Highlight CPL HAZEL PALOMERO I was awarded 35F All Source Intelligence Analyst in 2017 and performed my first drill with HHC 1-294 Infantry Regiment. I was nineteen years old with so much motivation because I thought I was going to be a spy; at least that’s what my recruiter had said. Turns out, I was more of a weather forecaster. Forecast after forecast after forecast. Intelligence analysis was then redefined when we were sent off to Egypt in 2019. I got thrown into a world that had nothing to do with forecasting the weather. It was fast-paced and exhausting; but it was also such an eye opening experience to be performing intelligence. My position was in the Contingent Joint 2 and Force Information Center as a Brigade Level Future Operations Analyst. I assessed and analyzed potential threats directed toward the Multinational Force and Observers’ personnel, equipment, and facilities. Unfortunately, I am unable to share any further details about what I did in Egypt but I am able to provide a simple definition of what Military Intelligence is: “Military intelligence is a military discipline that uses information collection and analysis approaches to provide guidance and direction to assist commanders in their decisions.” Thank you, Wikipedia.

WILL REPRESENT GUAM IN THE REGIONAL BEST WARRIOR COMPETITION SGT Nicole Dagmar Cruz has won the FY 2022 Best Warrior Competition for the Guam Army National Guard, and will be representing us in the regional competition. She is currently with the HHC, 1st Battalion 294th Infantry Battalion as a Human Resources NCO. The competition was composed of the new Army Combat Fitness Test, CSM Board, written land navigation test, an obstacle course, Army Warrior Tasks, a five-mile ruck, and a Combat Water Test. She had two months to prepare, physically and mentally. One month prior to her the event, she began training harder. Each day she conducted morning physical trainings, hourly workouts, and training in the afternoon. She pushed herself in her hourly workouts, with deadlifting, bicep curls, and leg tucks. Twoweeks prior to the big event, she actually conducted each event. Now came the big day, to complete all events in a one day time span and the Combat water training the following day. As tired and exhausted as she was in each event, she pushed through and gave her all. She is a mother of one, and still had to prioritize her time to meet all training criteria and time for son. Luckily with her prior experience of competing as the Soldier of the Year, and her prior training experiences, she was most confident and needed a light refresher to compete and win the Best Warrior Competition.

YOUR GUAM NATIONAL GUARD'S NCO OF THE YEAR WHAT MADE YOU COMPETE? Given the opportunity to best represent myself, my company, I felt the need to showcase the best of my abilities amongst other competitors within the battalion, especially as a female.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THE BWC THIS YEAR AND LAST TIME YOU COMPETED AS A SOLDIER IN 2016? I don’t think there is a greater comparison between the events or what happened, but I guess it's just more prideful competing as an NCO this year amongst male Soldiers, especially those who are 11B, and I guess it was just another opportunity for me to prove myself worthy of competing amongst other competitive Soldiers.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY TO MOTIVATE OTHER SOLDIERS IN THE BATTALION TO COMPETE NEXT YEAR? My best advice would be to put yourself out there, push forward. Things are going to get tough, but at the end of the day you're doing it

Our Mission
The scout platoon’s mission is to conduct reconnaissance and security operations to answer the commander’s information requirements and provide early warning to the protected force. Specifically, it conducts tasks to satisfy the commander’s critical information requirements before the latest time the information of value expires.
Weapons Training
Scout platoons conduct reconnaissance and security missions in close contact with enemy organizations and civilian populations to allow maneuver commanders to seize, retain, and exploit the initiative and obtain a position of relative advantage.
Perpetual Work The Scouts and Snipers continue to be one of the most versatile and active platoons in the battalion. If they can’t be found deep in the jungle brushing up on infantry tactics, they’re most likely supporting company-wide training events. The Soldiers of the Scout/Sniper platoon continue to train hard night and day in preparation for 2022’s XCTC (Exportable Combat Training Capability). SPC TOMAS CONCEPCION
The Combat Medic Profession as a whole has the highest recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor historically. I was given 3 options after taking and scoring better than the minimum GT required on the ASVAB in 2008, Supply, Admin and 68W. Naturally my choice was 68W/Healthcare Specialist but I had also told my parents when I was at AIT in 2009 that maybe/eventually I could apply for the Guam Fire Department later in the future. Fast forward 1 deployment later to 2011, I applied and was selected to be a Firefighter/EMT for the Guam Fire Department to the present day. The motto of the Army Medical Department is in Latin “Experientia et Progressus” but translated “Experience and Progress” meaning that they provide world class medical care. As a 68W that is part of AMEDD, I was taught to “Conserve the Fighting Strength” to keep Infantry in the fight. Patch ‘em up so they can do what they do best…, let the grass run red with the blood of our enemies.
A Message from the Platoon Leader 2020 has been a tough year for our platoon, but with adversity comes out evolution. Our team has successfully recertify several combat medics in their NREMT. With the rising challenges of their missions and the island's fight against COVID-19, our medics were able to conduct the training that they needed while performing their high demanding jobs. For training, it is not just important to get it done, but the manner of how we get it done reflects greatly on our performance in the field. Realistic training is what our army is always shooting for. If the pressure and stress replicates even half of what the real thing produces, the value of the training rises exponentially. Over a 10-day period, our medics went through classes and practical scenarios for their tests. Our culminating event utilizes manequins that closely resembles real life injuries to include blood leakage and voice responses. We included sound effects to add to the scenario and bring it to life. They would each get individually tested for the first part to show their knowledge and skills. This part portrays how a two-man team would perform under fire with a casualty. The last part of the test involves a group of 4 or 5 medics performing and showcasing their knowledge and skill set. This portion of the training also tries to develop and test their teamworking skills. This is only for the recertification of their NREMT. Look forward for future events such as Combat Life Saver course and our Mass casualty event. "These things we do, so that others may live" - Combat medic creed

A CO Company Commander Buenas yan Hafa Adai ALPHA COMPANY SOLDIERS AND FAMILIES! I would like to start off by wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! We have been slowly transitioning back to the unit. The pandemic has made it difficult for us to execute drill as a whole company, as many of the Battalion Soldiers have been and are still tasked throughout the island in support of the local missions with the Joint Task Force efforts. We a very proud of our Soldiers for volunteering to serve our country and our island. As you may have noticed, there have been many changes happening within our company, along with many new faces. There are new leadership, new Soldiers, and the return of the SECFOR III Soldiers who were deployed to Andersen Air Force Base in support of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense mission. This past drill was the first time we have had majority of the company in attendance. Despite all the moving pieces, Soldiers remained resilient and have been highly engaged in trainings, maintaining their physical and administrative readiness. I have been extremely impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment, and professionalism that our Soldiers continue to display every drill. Some of the trainings that have been executed during this first quarter are COMMO/9-line MEDEVAC training, evaluating a casualty, land navigation, and many individual tasks. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Soldiers who were recently promoted during November drill: PFC Kachuo, Saiafan; PFC Raymond, Peter; CPL Aguero, Malcom; CPL Calvo, John; SGT Fejeran, Anthony; and SGT Garcia, Jeffrey. Also, a job well done to our very own, SPC Garrido, Devon and SPC Querry, Leanna, for representing our company in competing for the Soldier of the Year (SOY), Best Warrior Competition. CPL Calvo, John, SPC Borja, Nicholas, SPC Quenga, Christian, and SPC Quenga, John were also recognized and awarded for their support of the D.C. mission. Again, we are very proud of our Soldiers and thankful for the support they continue to receive from their families.
Moving forward for this next quarter, our focus will be on conducting Army Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills in preparation for the upcoming XCTC that will be held in Camp Roberts, California. We are looking forward to what is to come. I want to highly encourage our Soldiers to continue to strive to progress in your education, whether it be Professional Military Education (PME) or civilian education, and never settle less. Thank you to all Soldiers and family members for your love and support. A job well done to all! Continue to be safe this holiday season. May God bless you all!

SOLDIERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF DETACHMENT 2, HHB 1-487TH FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION. Detachment 2, Headquarters Headquarters Battery, 1st of the 48th Field Artillery Battalion is a Guam based forward observer section with current assigned strength of 34 personnel. Our mission is to provide, control and deconflict fire support assets for the battalion and ensure battlefield effects complement the maneuver unit's movement and disrupt the adversary's operation in order to provide smooth flow of plans execution. In simple terms, the forward observers are the appetizer to complement the infantry as the main dish to ensure a satisfactory outcome. November drill was focused on introduction to Joint Fires Observers (JFO) learning and refreshing on different types of Fires, aircraft lingo and target talk-on exercises. Some Soldiers completed their record Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) to meet 100% passing rate. Newly promoted SPC Arceo, Steven took charge of the unit Physical Training (PT) session in which he integrated his GPD Background training to increase the units overall fitness. We also conducted medical Army Warrior Task and Drills (AWTs) in collaboration with the HHC Medics and grenade refresher drills. One of our own Soldiers, SPC Muna, Kyelee represented the detachment in the Best Warrior Competition at both the Battalion selection and GUNG selection levels. He performed extraordinarily well in each of the tough obstacles against 5 other best of the GUNG warriors from different units. He competed with some of the most seasoned, experienced, physically fit Soldiers in Guam and did an outstanding job. Upon successfully, passing his last November APFT, SPC Legaspi, Nikolas was also promoted to his current rank and immediately took his first tasking by leading detachment PT and executing The "Murph" circuit based training giving an intense burnout experience workout for the detachment. For December drill, 3 of our E4s took helm and showcased Forward Observer duties and equipment actively participating in the 11B follow me recruitment drive, wherein they briefed to potential new recruits how it's like to be a 13F and test drive some of the equipment such as Binoculars, map, compass, Laser Ranger Finders and play with an interactive simulator to have a first person perspective of calling for fire operations.
Soldiers & family members also enjoyed the holiday meals, and detachment leaders participated in meal serving delivering great food and greetings to GUNG Soldiers, family and Guests. Lastly, with heavy hearts and to honor one of our brothers, we are deeply saddened to the passing of one our very own leader, mentor and brother SSG John Thomas A. Manibusan. The detachment Soldiers expresses their deepest condolences to the Manibusan family for their loss. His legacy, ideals and memory will keep on living on through his family and his Soldiers hearts and minds and wishing him a peaceful rest on his next assignment at Higher headquarters in heaven looking down and observing us from above. He will be missed but never forgotten. Overall a great quarter, new quality training, advancements and Soldier achievements, the detachement will keep this momentum going as we enter a more intense, training filled 2nd quarter of FY22. Thank you Soldiers and family members of the Detachment 2, HHB 1487th FA for all the continued support and dedication. I wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Years and please enjoy and be safe during the holiday season! Hiki No!

IN HONOR OF
SSG Manibusan
SSG John Thomas Manibusan enlisted in the Guam Army National Guard as a 13F Forward Observer on July 22, 2010 and was assigned to the DET 2 1-487th Field Artillery Regiment. He deployed to Afghanistan with Delta Company, 1-294th Infantry Battalion as a Forward Observer, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2012 to 2013 which earned him the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. He also deployed as a Squad Leader with the 1224th Engineer Support Company in support of the SECFOR-2 at Northwest Field Guam from 2019 to 2020. As a leader, he always led by example and entrusted and empowered his subordinates to be proactive, maintain discipline and become leaders themselves. He has always been a mentor that many looked up to both in and out of uniform. SSG Manibusan worked with the Guam Power Authority approximately 18 years moving up to his position of High Voltage Cable Splicer Supervisor. He played a critical role in the recovery efforts of Typhoon Yutu in both Guam and Saipan.
He has always been a mentor that many looked up to both in and out of uniform. Given his many positions, his main role that stood out the most is being John Thomas, a family man. Many of his comrades can agree to the fact that he did what he did for his family and even more. His loving and caring persona resonates within his wife, Donna Manibusan, along with his kids, Kaeara, Donovin, Johnovin, Dion, and Jaedon, and grand-daughter Auria Jae. His legacy will continue to live through his family, his friends, peers, subordinates and his brothers and sisters at arms in the Guam Army National Guard.
