Moving Tips Ask-O, Q: It’s finally time to move! Can you give us some moving tips? There are so many details to getting yourself ready to move! The first step is to get organized! If you are like me this is not an easy task and requires a little help from someone more organized, or some great resources that can be found on Google! One of my favorite tips that I found is to put together a “Moving Binder”. There are many different ways you can use a resource like this - put in a checklist of what you need to do before, during and after the move, or call your Hometown Realtor, we have a checklist we are happy to share! Add in the information on your utilities, who to call when they are being turned on or off and if you need to be there, a place for your loan docs, and receipts, so that everything is handy when you need it! Make sure you schedule your move. If you are fortunate enough to have movers come and pack for you, that is great, but you still may want to pack up your valuables and put together a “survival kit” so you have the tools you need for last minute items, and the things that will make the move easiest for you! You don’t want your kids favorite blanket riding in a box in the moving van for sure! You may also think about putting some of the following items in your survival kit...scissors, toiletries, some cash, meds you might need, critter food and other oops I forgot type of items! If you do this ahead of time you probably won’t ever need them (murpheys law right?) but what a great way to prevent emergencies! If you are moving yourself, make sure to call your Hometown Realtors to reserve our moving trailer to help keep your things out of the weather and so you won’t have to make as many trips! Also, we have boxes and packing tape available for our clients to use. Think about color coding your boxes according to the room you want them in and creating a legend so anyone who is helping you move can decipher the color code! These little things can make a huge difference in how smooth your moving experience goes! Another tip that may make moving easier is to create a moving basket for all of your labels, tape, sharpies, scissors. The simplest things can save so much time, this way when you go from room to room to pack things up you have all the things you need at your fingertips! Keep in mind as you pack that it is also the best time to organize and purge! If you never use the item, why would you want to pack it up and move it across the country or even across town. Keep a garbage can and a donation box near you while you pack so that you can purge unneeded items! When better to purge then when you realize it saves you having to pack?! Invest in bubble wrap! It’s worth it; anyone can accidentally drop a box, or who knows what can happen through the moving progress. The better you pack your things, the less likely you will find them broken and risk ruining the joy of moving into your new home! These are just a few great tips for moving. Hopefully they help you get started being creative and thinking of what will make the move easiest for you! Olivia

Founded In: 1884 Population: 6,867 (according to 2000 census) Elevation: 5,357 ft. Median Income: $32,397 Lander began in 1869 when the army established a small military post, Camp Augur (later Camp Brown), to protect Shoshone Indians from attacks by the Sioux and Arapaho Indians. Settlers moved here in the late 1870’s from the dying gold mines of South Pass, which is located to the South. Lander got its name from Col. Frederick W. Lander, who surveyed the Oregon Trails Lander Cutoff. One of the town’s early residents was the outlaw Butch Cassidy, who frequented Lander’s poker tables and dance halls. Once the railroad arrived in 1906, Lander became the last stop on the railroad for visitors traveling to Yellowstone and began its rapid growth. During the 1960’s and 70’s, Lander became a mining boomtown but the mine shut its doors in 1983. Modern day Lander is a bustling community. Its downtown area is lined with specialty shops, family owned restaurants and historic buildings. Each year, visitors enjoy world-class high mountain lake fishing, as well as mountain and rock climbing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and hiking. Sinks Canyon State Park Sinks Canyon State park lies about 7 miles West of Lander on Wyoming Highway 131. There are 30 campsites located along the river amid jumbled granite boulders, pine and aspens. Some of the sites are accessible to RV’s up to 40-feet long. There are displays about ecology, wildlife and the history of Sinks Canyon at the visitor center. You can take a short interpretive hike in the area, watch birds, climb rocks and look for wildlife. A popular site to visit is “The Sinks”. It is named “The Sinks” because the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River disappears into a wall of limestone and it reappears a quarter-mile downstream in a large pool known as “The Rise.” There is an interpretive center plus an observation deck. Red Canyon There is a stunning vista of iron-laden Triassic rock at this canyon about 15 miles South of Lander on Wyoming Highway 28. In the 19th Century settlers had fruit orchards and

vegetable gardens in the warm valley and today the area is part of Red Canyon Ranch, protected by The Nature Conservancy. South Pass City South Pass City began with a boom in 1867 with the discovery of gold on the southeastern end of the rugged Wind River Mountains. By 1868, Wyoming’s City of Gold boasted over 250 buildings along the banks of Willow Creek and the surrounding hillsides. South Pass City hummed with excitement as numerous saloons, stamp mills, hotels, and businesses took advantage of the gold driven economy. Over 1000 people called South Pass City home during this raucous time. South Pass City was the first of three towns established due to the discovery of gold in what became the Sweetwater Mining District. Now a historic site, South Pass City has enjoyed 35 years of unprecedented notoriety as a result of the combined efforts of several state agencies. The last 35 years have seen South Pass City become one of the most accurately restored and authentically exhibited historic sites in the West. Seventeen of the site’s 23 original structures have been restored and exhibited, with many of the site’s 30,000 artifacts exhibited in their original buildings. Although visitors are welcome to South Pass City at any time during the year, many people frequent there for the most popular event of the Year – Gold Rush Days – which happens during the last weekend in July. Loop Road Tour If you are dying to get up in the mountains, one of the best ways is to head West of Lander up Sinks Canyon for a tour of the southern Wind River Range via the Loop Road. This rugged dirt road will take you through forest of pine and spruce, with vistas of snow capped peaks. After 26 miles of dirt, you’ll hit Highway 28 near South Pass. By the end of summer 2007, the loop road will be paved from Sink’s Canyon up to 7 miles at the youth camp.

Founded In: 1906 Population: 9,310 (according to 2000 census) Elevation: 4,956 ft. Median Income: $31,531 The town of Riverton lies within the Wind River Indian Reservation and is the hub city for Fremont County, Wyoming. Riverton’s route along the Yellowstone Highway has made it a favorite stop-over for visitors to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Rendezvous City Rendezvous were held in this valley in 1829, 1830, and 1838. The rendezvous played host to many prominent mountain men including Jim Bridger, William Sublette, Kit Carson and Jedediah Smith. Every July, Riverton celebrates mountain man history by hosting the annual 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous. This event keeps the old memories alive by providing a living encampment, games of skill, food and dancing. Riverton’s rendezvous site is the only rendezvous site that remains on original ground today. Central Wyoming College Founded in 1966 by a county-wide vote, CWC is one of Wyoming’s seven public two-year community colleges. CWC has off-campus sites in Jackson, Lander, Thermopolis, Dubois and the nearby Wind River Indian Reservation. Founded In: 1884 Population: 962 (according to 2000 census) Elevation: 6,917 ft. Median Income: $28,194 Lying between the Wind River Indian Reservation and infamous Togwotee Pass is the quaint, rustic town of Dubois (DEW-boys). The first settlers wanted to call it “Never Sweat” because of the lack of hard work with some of the settlers, but the federal government named the town Dubois after an Idaho Senator. Dubois runs alongside the Wind River and is surrounded by the Wind River Mountains to the South and the Absaroka Mountains to the North. These mountains make for good logging and so the forests were heavily logged in the first half of the twentieth century to help meet the endless demand for railroad ties to the Chicago and Northwest railroad. Scandinavian Paul Bunyan types known as tie hacks could cut and shape about thirty ties a day, burning about 9000 calories in the process and earning a mere ten cents a tie. Today, Dubois is a popular stop for visitors traveling to Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Recreational opportunities in the Dubois area include camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, hiking, photography and many selections of guest ranches and outfitters. Although summer travel is a large economic part of Dubois, there are many winter activities as well. The Dubois area has more than 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and access to the Continental Divide trail. Ice fishing, cross country skiing and the Brooks Lake Lodge dog sledding rides are also popular winter activities. Big Game and the National Big Horn Sheep Center Dubois is a region which hosts a vast variety of wildlife. People from afar visit this area to see some of Wyoming’s most diverse big game. Big game species include bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, moose, antelope and black bear. Cougar and grizzly bears are occasionally sighted, as are wolves. To the South of Dubois lies Whisky Mountain which is home to Wyoming’s big horn sheep and several elk herds during the winter, although many more elk take up winter residence on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Inberg-Roy management area on the East Fork of the Wind River. Dubois is home to the largest wintering bighorn sheep herd in the Lower 48. Since 1949, more than 2,000 sheep have been transplanted to

Utah, Idaho, South Dakota, New Mexico and to other areas of Wyoming from the herd on Whiskey Mountain. Brooks Lake Located 20 miles West of Dubois, and about 7 miles off the main highway, Brooks Lake is located at the base of Brooks Lake Mountain. Brooks Lake Lodge was built in 1922 to serve as a stopover for the many tourists passing through the area on their way to Yellowstone. It is listed in the National Historic Register. The lake, lodge and mountain were named after one of Wyoming’s former governors, Bryant B. Brooks. Trail Lake Ranch Trail Lake Ranch, also called Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp, is still owned by Wyoming Game and Fish. The facility is leased and programs are run by the Lucius Burch Center at Trail Lake Ranch, which continues the ranch’s long education history. Surrounded by sagebrush hills, massive mountain peaks and a conifer forest, Trail Lake Ranch provides the perfect outdoor classroom for exploring the natural world with expert guides.
