BEAUTY THROUGH DEATH FORM, SPACE, AND ORDER

6

the brief of this project was to design a space and garden area to reflect and contemplate on one specific idea. the concept i chose was the idea of beauty though death, with a focused inspiration of dried flowers. the assignment was to build a scale model based from diagrams which were developed from our inspiration.

this project focused on residential design. the goal was to create a contemporary vacation villa in bali for hypothetical client, television star anthony bourdain. we were asked to get inspiration for the villa from a piece of contemporary artwork of our choice. i used a sean scully piece named “without” for my inspirational artwork because i was inspired by its use of color, line, and simplicity.

10 using anthony bourdains strong attitude, bali’s relaxing cultural vibe, and the strong line use of sean scully’s artwork as inspiration, i designed the building, interiors, and landscape for this project. i completed this by using natural elements and sustainable materials in my design. both the architecture and interiors represent a relaxing balinese retreat for the busy tv host.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO TWO

the brief for this project was to create a new office space for the cosmetic company, birchbox. the concept for this space was inspired by the phrase “beauty in a box. from that phrase, i was able to create a space inspired by the natural beauty of geodes: how rough they are on the outside, but how the inside is filled with jewels and curves. this studio project was a group assignment, thus i would like to thank my partner for her contribution to the project. my contribution to the space was designing the second floor, which components include several separate work cluster, closed offices, and a wait/lounge area for visitors.

a museum for sensory exploration this project called for a renovation of an existing space: the old keyhoe iron mill in savanah, georgia. the goal of the project was to create a sensory gallery space as an extension of the jepson museum in savannah.

not only has iron been a key aspect of architecture in the modern world, but it has also shaped the history of the building that was chosen for this project. a closer look at iron shows that the molecular structure of iron is radial, circular, and seems to multipy as it moves away from the center. applying aspects of iron into the plan and circulation of the space allow the pathways and rooms to radiate from a central point and from each other. iron is also extremely flexible, mold-able, and transformative. its ability to mold easily served as an inspiration for the open galleries and installation spaces.

a sensory wine experience

24

a objective of this project was to create new branding opportunities for a client of our choice by designing a modular pop-up space. we chose to create a new branding experience for the european capital of culture, which happened to be in marseilles, france in 2013. after in-depth analysis of the client, demographics, and interests of the southern france population, we created “wine boxx” : a pop-up wine tasting and sensory wine experience for tourists and locals. the slogan, “a new view” summarized our project, with three themes that guided our design decisions: education, cultural unity, and sustainability. with those three things in mind, we created a modular space that can be assembled and disassembled anywhere in marseilles. primary programmatic considerations included retail , educational wine tasting, a small art gallery, and bar. wine boxx was a project executed while studying abroad in lacoste, france. this project was also a group project and i would like thank my partners for their contribution to the project.

MEMORIAL HEALTH PROJECT

CLC : COLLABORATIVE LEARNING CENTER MEMORIAL HEALTH HOSPITAL, SAVANNAH, GA

i was presented an opportunity to rethink and redesign a new emergency department and waiting room for memorial health hospital through a collaborative class at scad. the class hosted chosen members of several different majors, like industrial design, design management, and interior design. the class was research driven, with most of the class emphasis on changing the user experience though research, design, and way finding. over 10 weeks, the class worked in small groups to execute the various elements of the project. i worked with another interior design and design management student to complete the full plan and renderings of the space.

28

through our research, three terms surfaced that showed the goals of our project : service, environment, and communication

entry view this project utilizes easy way finding, viability, and new uses of technology. as you enter, you are given the choice to check-in at a kiosk ( as a returning patient) or check-in at the front desk. from there, you are able to wait in public or semi-private waiting areas until you are called back. materiality, open viability, and large graphics lend themselves to easy way finding around the space. incorporating natural lighting and greenery were also utilized to make the space fresh and help calm users.

31

view of transition area

32

the transition area (or waiting area) allows the user to choose semi-private or public seating without obstructing the view of hospital staff. because “waiting area” has a negative connotation, we renamed the space “transition area” to make the user feel more conformable with there wait.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO FIVE & SIX CAPSTONE THESIS PROJECT an urban grocery experience access to healthy food for low-income families had proven itself as an epidemic in the united states. many urban and rural areas are finding it more and more difficult to find easy access to healthy food stores, which is contributing to health-related diseases like heart disease and obesity. many low-income neighborhoods, including parts of savannah, are struggling to find healthy food that is convenient and low cost. the purpose of this project is to bring healthy food access back into urban neighborhoods that need it the most. bringing a well-designed grocery store into a low-income neighborhood would give families a place to buy healthy food, help educate families about eating healthy on a small budget, and cultivate the community by creating new jobs.

the goal // project objectives to empower the user to promote community interaction

34

to give access to healthy food to educate and promote healthy living

the research // statistics in mississippi, which has the highest obesity rate of any state, over 70% of food stamp eligible homes have to travel over 30 miles to reach a grocery store

75% 78% of food deserts are urban

of low income families are interested in learning about cooking healthy meals that taste good

23 million americans live in a food desert

21.3% of Georgia children are obese

there is large and consistent evidence that many low-income communities, communities of color, and sparsely populated rural communities do not have sufficient opportunities to buy healthy, affordable food 85 % of families skip healthy purchases at the grocery store because of price. fresh produce is skipped over most often.

the source : creating a wellspring of empowerment, access, and community the concept for this project was a wellspring. wellsprings provide water and a source of life for a desert oasis. the thought was to literally turn a “food desert” into a “food oasis”. through abstracting the shapes, transformations, and orgins of oasis’ and thier wellsprings, i was able to apply the concept into the design process.

floor plan with highlighted focus this 25,000 sqf. space gave the opportunity to mimic a typical grocery store plan, however, introduce educational programmatic elements like an educational kitchen. the overall plan also includes a large bulk section and an emphasis on the produce section.

37

I chose to focus and develop the produce section because research shows that customers spend the most time in these areas. these areas also serve as the perfect area to help customers choose healthy food . the irregular path through the produce section invokes self-discovery and adventure, lending itself to provide better learning opportunities.

38

view of produce section from entry the entry to the produce section evokes feeling of familiarity and community. the first display that you encounter are two recipe tables the displays holds all ingredients to one healthy low-cost recipe that was recommended by someone in the community, whether it be a local chef or a neighbor of the store.

39

40 entry view with community wall community elements are incorporated throughout the store to help nurture the learning process and inspire others in the community to eat healthier. the entry of the space utilizes a community installation that includes peg board for brochures and a pin-up space for community posters. the installation also includes a large write-able surface that shows a map of the community. employees will circle areas on the map that highlight the local farmers markets and happenings within the community that month.

the demonstration room is available free to any customers. this room environment holds short and informal cook demonstrations and lessons. its goal is to empower the user by reinforcing the idea of control over ones eating habits. these sessions are informal and casual, to make the lessons less intimidating.
