THE PERFECT MOMENT PHOTO CONTEST
Aphoto taken in Cyprus has been judged as one of the top photos in an international photo competition, The Perfect Moment Photo Contest, in which photographers from more than 50 countries took part. Competition finalist Hasan Baglar received an honourable mention for his photograph of two praying mantises perched on a branch, their front legs stretched up in the air, and their colourful wings outspread, which the judges called “amusing”. “I think it was afraid of me because it looked nervous and I have heard this is the normal behaviour of a praying mantis when it’s afraid.” Baglar, born in Limassol in 1974, specialises in nature and wildlife photography, capturing images of birds, butterflies, orchids and insects in Cyprus. He reached the finals of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards with an image of two praying mantises in a similar pose. He titled the picture Zeybeks – a reference to a traditional Turkish dance.
NATURE D id you know Cyprus is a pit stop for millions of insects that fly at high altitudes over the sea and come to land to rest as they migrate from the Middle East to western Europe. The study was carried out by research biologist Will Hawkes who studied the swarms of insects on the island for three months during spring. He said, “This place is a migratory hotspot for millions of painted lady butterflies, drone fly hoverflies, sevenspot ladybirds and vagrant emperor dragonflies – it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” One grass fly we found at Cyprus is just 2mm long, so, for their body size, these migrations are quite incredible. Most of the time they’re completely invisible to us,” adds Hawkes, who explains that the distances travelled by insects flying via Cyprus are as yet unknown. “Migration hotspots like this are a window into processes that normally go on unseen, high CYPRUS - AN INSECT HOTSPOT
above our heads, as huge amounts of insects make seasonal movements,” says Wotton. “This Cyprus hotspot shows how distant ecosystems can nevertheless be connected. It’s part of an emerging global picture of insects on the move.”

LOCAL PRODUCE
The ministry of agriculture is collaborating with the ministry of innovation to implement an electronic platform for fresh local produce to enable customers to buy produce directly from farmers. The platform will offer the producers the chance to display their products free of charge for
a limited amount of time with the possibility of extending the period following the set up with a small fee. A government committee will be established in order to ensure that the products comply with the necessary health and safety standards. “The role of local action groups in this effort is very important, as it ensures that local farms continue to operate and grow in a sustainable way.” “At the same time, the assistance provided by agricultural organisations to farmers will be equally important, as it will give them guidance and support during the transition to an online market, so they can familiarise themselves with a new way of marketing their products.”
Any farmers and companies interested in the plan to contact its representative Marios Adamides at 2408328 or via email at madamides@moa.gov.cy, or the representative of the ministry of innovation Marios Giorgoudi at 22205050 or via email at mgiorgoudis@dmrid.gov.cy.
LIVING Why ILoveLiving In Cyprus BY Giorgos KOUSOULOS
It may not be wise to assume that your country of origin is the best there is. However it is moments like those I will explain down below that it is what is. The reasons why I am in love with Cyprus. Firstly the time starting from spring to the end of Autumn. That period is worth living at any particular time. Clear blue skies and bright sunny days are the most characteristics of that era. Warm and long days, warm and calm nights. Plus the low rates of criminality have a feeling of friendliness in the air. Also let us not forget the clear blue seas and the golden soft sands that a sense of freedom inside you. As you wake up in the morning and feel the warmth, making the first cup of coffee looking outside the window and seeing the beautiful blue sky and the bright day can make you smile and look forward of the things to come. When you walk outside hearing the birds singing making their nest can be described as nature singing you a song to remember the tune in your daily life. If you combine it with the energy and positivity you get from the Vitamin D as the sun rays hit your body will definitely put a smile on your face. It is more obvious if you live in a suburn area that it is very easy to make friends as we are by nature easy to talk to and easy to smile and easily you will find yourself waving alot to people you know as you drive and/or walking by. As the day comes to an end, you prepare your dinner and you sit down in your backyard or your balcony, enjoying either the sun going down since days are long either by night enjoying the cool breeze and looking at the horizon enjoying a pint of beer or a glass of wine. Coming to the weekend as the weather gets warmer
you pack your stuff into a backpack and drive to the nearest beach. Every beach is just 10 minutes away if you live to the coastal areas. You can spend all your day just relaxing laying in the sand and swimming letting the sun and the sea give you body the healthy benefits they have to offer giving you an euphoria. When the night falls still warm you can sit in a tavern having a pleasant time with your family and/or friends as you enjoy the seemingly endless nights watching the sea in the background. It gives you the illusion that there is no tomorrow, that night will last forever. To summarise, Cyprus may not be the heaven on earth, but it’s close enough. The bright days, the warm long days, the easiness of the people, the safety you feel and moments that can last forever make it a place to fall in love with.
