Programme Guide Developing Managers Building Teams Supporting Organisations


Managing Change The programme supports our operational managers to help support change in services and amongst their staff. The programme gives you the practical skills to drive change forward whilst at the same time making sure that your staff and colleagues have the chance to contribute and feel included in the process. The programme will equip operational managers to deliver change effectively through your staff. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: Managers who operationally manage change programmes implemented by the Trust. By the end of the programme you will: •Describe change processes and identify why change is needed •Be aware of the drivers influencing current organisational change •Have discussed your own reaction to change and have considered your own responses in relation to managing a team through change •Consider your role in helping alleviate team members’ likely reactions to change. •Recognise the emotional stages of change •Identify key skills you need to make change management effective •Identify appropriate communication and support methods Learning Outcomes: Participants will be confident to manage the delivery of change programmes in their area of service.

Essential Skills for Managers The skills programme will give you the knowledge and skills to work effectively and safely in your role. Our managers will recognise and develop the tools they need to manage resources (people, budgets, equipment) at a time when the organisation seeks to make efficiencies and savings as part of our response to the White Paper and the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Performance agenda. This involves giving you the knowledge and information relevant to you managerial role, including HR policies and your responsibilities in terms of finance and governance, supported by developing the practical skills to implement these. Duration: 4 days Target Audience: All Managers Day 1 – “Recruitment & Selection” On completion delegates will be able to chair recruitment panels •Recruitment policies and procedures •The application process •Managing successful interviews •Getting the right person Attendance is optional if you have attended Recruitment & Selection training in the last 2 years. Day 2 – “Delivering Policies and Procedures” Delivered by Human Resources Officers •The role of the manager and HR in implementing policies •The Personal Responsibility Framework •Conducting investigations and interviews •Practical application to your workplace Delegates will be expected to be familiar with the Managing Absence, Bullying & Harassment and Discipline & Dismissal policies prior to attendance. Day 3 – “Using your Resources” Delivered by Information Governance and Finance •Managing budgets and information •Information governance, Data Protection and Freedom of Information •Workforce information Day 4 – Attendance at Employment Tribunal Learning Outcomes: Managers will have the confidence to apply generic skills (listening, questioning, counselling and investigating) to a number of policies and procedures as part of their managerial role. This will help to give our staff the motivation and engagement to perform effectively as managers and will help to increase levels of performance LGS management of their staff.

Future Leaders The Future Leaders programme focuses on our aspiring leaders and manager, giving them an introduction to what’s involved and how to succeed. The programme gives the participant an understanding of what makes a manager together with introducing the key skills required to flourish in the role. Duration: 1 Day Target Audience: For those aspiring into management positions By the end of the programme you will: •Know the skills and behaviours of successful managers •Understand verbal and non verbal communication behaviours •Recognise internal and external customers and how to meet customer needs •Value and celebrate diversity amongst our staff and colleagues •Work with others to problems solve and achieve results Learning Outcomes: Participants will understand the role of the manager and will learn the skills required to succeed in the role. You will also have the opportunity to reflect on your own career aspirations and progression route.

High Impact Presentation Skills The programme will encourage participants to consider and develop their presentation style in order to maximise engagement and influence diverse audiences. All participants will deliver a pre-prepared presentation and receive feedback on it from an objective audience. Participants will then evaluate their own presentations and consider how to maximise engagement and influence of them throughout the day. You will then have the opportunity to apply the learning from the programme by delivering your presentation again at the end of the day. Duration: 1 Day Target Audience: Senior Manager who represent the Trust internally and externally and deliver information and cascade corporate messages. By the end of the programme you will: •Practise delivering a pre-prepared presentation to an audience and received feedback to a planned and agreed standard •Refresh your knowledge on structuring and delivering effective presentations •apply Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) theory and techniques to engage and influence audience members •Be able to apply the GMW Brand to presentations to make an impact both visually and in terms of values •Have applied learning to delivering a second presentation which will also be subject to feedback Learning Outcomes: On completion of the programme delegates will have refreshed and re-energised your presentation style to have greater impact, even more influence and engage more of the audience more readily.

Leading and Managing Change Organisations and people have no choice: they must constantly change to survive. They do have a choice, however, in how they change. Deciding to manage change by applying an organised, structured methodology is the clear choice of successful organisations. When they do this, changes are implemented faster, cheaper and with a minimum of pain and disruption to people. This programme supports senior managers to successfully deliver and embed organisational and service-specific change programmes across the Trust. Duration: 1 day Target Audience: Senior Managers with responsibilities who lead change programmes across the Trust. By the end of the programme you will: •Outline the organisational agreements about change management •Understand how change management fits with programme and project management •Discuss the principles of knowledge management and apply these to the Trust •Develop plans and strategies to successfully deliver change programmes in your service •Be able to apply the agreed model of change to current activities Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to lead successful change programmes in their area of service, considering lessons learnt and the impact on the organisation as a whole

Leading Teams This 10 day programme gives managers the knowledge and skills to lead their services to deliver excellent services and to identify real opportunities to improve them. The programme gives participants the opportunity to consider their own leadership style, build on their project and service improvement skills and reflect on the way you work with and manage people. The programme consists of 10 modules and is endorsed with the Institute of Leadership and Management. This will give all participants a nationally recognised management qualification. The programme is lead by Organisational Development but also includes a series of master classes from subject experts from across the Trust, such as clinical psychologists. Participants in the programme will also identity and implement a service wide improvement project which gives the opportunity to apply the learning from the programme in a work environment. Duration: 10 Days, including the implementation of a service improvement project and completion of a programme handbook to achieve the ILM qualification. Target Audience: All new and existing Supervisors and Team Leaders in both clinical and non-clinical settings. By the end of the programme you will: •Know the expectations of the Trust for our leaders and managers including self management and representing the organisation whilst becoming familiar with the Trust’s strategic plans and apply these to your service •Understand the NHS Leadership Qualities Framework (LQF) and how to apply it •Reflect on your communication style and develop strategies to use guide and motivate colleagues and staff •Consider the fundamentals of leadership and how to lead your service and teams to success while developing management techniques to support this •Understand the principles of project management and planning improvements whilst supporting change and innovations amongst colleagues •Manage individual and team development, recognising the value of coaching and appraisal •Familiarise yourself with the Trust’s people management policies and procedures and know how to apply them •Design, deliver and present effective presentations and consider the importance of self presentation Learning Outcomes: Participants will reflect on their own performance and develop strategies to successfully lead their service to meet strategic aims and objectives. Applying this learning in the delivery of the improvement project will help foster a culture of improvement and innovation across services.

Learning to Lead Learning to Lead is a 3 day programme which supports our managers to achieve their individual and wider team objectives by examining the skills needed to achieve success. The programme lasts for 3 days, with days 1&2 giving the practical knowledge and skills that the Trust requires for our managers, followed by a 3rd day to reflect on how these have been applied to your service. As a key part of the programme, all participants will identify and implement and improvement project in their area of service. The Programme is accredited to Institute of Leadership & Management Level 3. Duration: 3 Days Target Audience: All new and existing Supervisors and Team Leaders in both clinical and non-clinical settings. By the end of the programme you will: •Be able to identify problems in your service and implement solutions to them •Discuss the characteristics of leaders •Understand your own levels of power and influence •Recognise the importance of networking and how to use your network to get results •Plan to apply these principles through the delivery of an improvement project. •Identify sources of workplace conflict and your preferred conflict resolution style •Know how to send and receive messages that people understand •List the key components of the service you offer to service users and colleagues •Understand the different stages of team development and the factors that make a successful team •Complete a improvement project linked to your service objectives Learning Outcomes: Completing the programme will give you the opportunity to develop and practice the skills to help you succeed in your management role. Completing an improvement project will help you apply these in your area of service and make a real difference to the way you work. The programme is also endorsed to ILM Level 2 which can be achieved by completing a reflective piece which evaluates your project and the skills you used to make it a success.

Managing Workplace Conflict This programme enables participants to deal with workplace conflict effectively in the workplace. As a participant you will have the chance to consider how conflict can arise and what your responsibilities are to manage it. You will also develop practical tools to help with this and will know what other support is available. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: All Managers By the end of the programme you will: •Describe the nature of conflict •Identify strategies for dealing with conflict •Understand the effects of unresolved conflict within the workplace •Practice the skills required to deal with conflict effectively •Know what internal and external sources of support are available Learning Outcomes: Participants are better able to deal with conflict in a way that enables work objectives to be achieved and relationships to grow.

The Psychology of Change It is well known that change programmes bring out different reactions in the people it affects. This programme will give managers an insight into why people and organisations react in a particular way and offer strategies to both offer support whilst delivering the service The programme will equip operational managers to deliver change effectively through your staff. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: Strategic and operational managers of change programmes implemented by the Trust. By the end of the programme you will: •Discuss organisation, department and service culture and how this impacts on change •Analyse how people manage and respond to change •List your responsibilities to identify and support staff whilst maintaining your service •Action plan strategies at the earliest stage of the change planning process Learning Outcomes: Participants will be confident to manage the delivery of change programmes in their area of service.

Resilience Training for Managers To help our managers build up their own resilience and to consider their own levels of pressure and stress, Resilience Training gives managers the chance to reflect on their own levels of psychological, emotional and physical resilience. The programme encourages managers to develop strategies that work to develop their own levels of resilience to meet future workplace challenges. As pert of the programme, you will receive your own personal resilience profile which explores each of the key themes of personal resilience on more detail and measures you against them. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: All Managers By the end of the programme you will: •Consider how to keep pressure positive and role-model positive behaviour •Know your sense of purpose in work and develop this for your colleagues •Develop your own resilience prescription •Identify how your own symptoms and stress and work out strategies to meet these •Work with peers to consider common causes of workplace stress and jointly action plan to overcome these Learning Outcomes: Managers will be able to consider their own levels of resilience and action plan to develop these further.

Service Improvement Tools and Techniques The programme supports our operational managers to identify problems within their services and to select a number of recognised tools and techniques to help deliver solutions to them.. The programme links closely to Change Management and Developing Innovation and Creativity. The programme will equip operational managers to deliver change effectively and links closely to the service improvement programme. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: Managers who operationally manage change programmes implemented by the Trust. By the end of the programme you will •Know a variety of problem identification techniques •Practice a number of service improvement tools and techniques •Work with peers to select the most appropriate tool or technique for you select •Plan your approach to implementing your selected techniques in your workplace Learning Outcomes: Participants will be confident to manage the delivery of change programmes in their area of service.

Leading in a Strategic Environment The programme gives practising managers the foundation for their formal development in this role and is supported by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Certificate. Leading in a Strategic Environment does this by developing basic management skills and assisting participants in gaining the knowledge required at this level to drive your services forward by broadening the skills and knowledge in a flexible and practical way. The content of the programme supports the delegate to reflect on their own leadership style, consider their role in strategic and operational service improvement and to understand the expectations of the Trust and their staff in achieving this. You will also be invited to undertake a 360 feedback exercise as part of the programme. Duration: 5 days Target Audience: Strategic Managers in both clinical and non clinical settings Programme Content: •Developing the reflective manager •Understanding the management role and becoming an effective leader •Managing for efficiency and effectiveness •Leading innovation and change •Understanding the political environment •Making a financial case •Managing Improvement Learning Outcomes: Participants will reflect on their own role and expectations in the role as strategic leaders in the Trust.

Managing Stress in Others The Managing Stress in others training is aimed to support managers to understand their role in managing workplace stress in their staff. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: All managers who manage staff By the end of the programme you will: •Understand the impact that workplace stress has on a team, service and organisational level •Identify the signs and symptoms of stress in your colleagues •Recognise how managers contribute to excessive levels of pressure and stress •Be familiar with the HSE Management Standards and your responsibilities to meet these •Develop effective solutions to help manage stress amongst your staff •Be guided to other resources available to managing and supporting people with mental health problems in the workplace Learning Outcomes: Participants will be fully aware of their responsibilities in managing workplace stress and will develop strategies and skills to help minimise it.

Thinking Differently The programme supports our operational managers to help support innovation and creativity to solve problems. Linking into change management approaches the day will involve you considering different approaches and strategies to deliver innovative solutions to work based problems. The programme will equip operational managers to deliver change effectively and links closely to the service improvement programme. Duration: ½ day Target Audience: Managers who operationally manage change programmes implemented by the Trust. By the end of the programme you will: •Identify the roles of creativity and innovation in problem solving •Practice a number of tools and techniques that encourage innovation and creativity •Select the most appropriate tool to apply to your service •Diagnose the most suitable approach to solving the problem Learning Outcomes: Participants will be confident to manage the delivery of change programmes in their area of service.
