At its best, the very word “evangelism” has a negative connotation and at its worst is something we refuse to be associated with. Over the next few days as we flesh out Exponential’s 2014 theme, Seek + Save, we’re focusing on five areas: ReThinking Evangelism, ReThinking Outreach, ReThinking Witness, ReThinking Preaching, and ReThinking the Commission. The church growth and seeker movements of a previous generation brought energy to the priority of evangelism but lessened the emphasis on discipleship. The more contemporary conversation around the mission of the church has elevated the priority of discipleship as the main concern of the church with less talk about evangelism. As a result, we’ve created a false dichotomy between evangelism and discipleship. We want to rethink these
WELCOME TO EXPONENTIAL 2014!
areas inherent to Jesus’ core mission on earth (Luke 19:10)—to seek and save—and how we can join Him in that mission. Check out our main session themes:
Sessions 1 & 2: ReThinking Evangelism We’ll seek to understand evangelism as a natural part of the discipleship journey. Sessions 3 & 4: ReThinking Outreach We want to challenge churches to do evangelism as a community of believers with our words and deeds. Sessions 5 & 6: ReThinking Witness We’ll exhort and equip churches to teach their people to listen and share their story.
Sessions 7 & 8: ReThinking Preaching We’ll encourage churches to redeem preaching as good news. Sessions 9 & 10: ReThinking the Commission We want to accelerate movements by inspiring and commissioning church planters. In addition to your experience in our main sessions, Exponential offers a variety of pre-conference intensives, more than 100 workshops and niched conversations to explore. My hope and prayer is that the words and ideas you hear this week will inspire, challenge and equip you as we seek to join Jesus in His mission to seek and save. Dave Ferguson

JESUS’ STRATEGY FOR REACHING THE WORLD ROBERT COLEMAN INTERVIEW BY
LINDY LOWRY

ReThinking Evangelism Robert Coleman – Conference Speaker
RETHINKING EVANGELISM In this thought-provoking and inspiring in-depth conversation with venerable voice and GordonConwell Theological Seminary Evangelism Professor Robert Coleman (author of the watershed titles The Master Plan of Evangelism and The Master Plan of Discipleship), Coleman candidly shares his awakening to the symbiotic relationship of evangelism and discipleship. Coleman joins us again as a speaker for Exponential 2014.
Discipling is the fabric out of which Jesus’ evangelism evolved. Dr. Coleman, what’s your definition of evangelism and discipleship? Well, they flow together. An evangelist will make known the Good News. The Good News is Christ. Discipleship is to follow Christ and continue to learn Him. The word “disciple” translates “learner,” as in the sense of an apprentice. So followers of Christ inevitably become disciple makers or evangelists. I don’t see that we need to labor the distinctions between the two except to recognize we’re talking about two realities. Both flow together in a personal commitment. The objective of evangelism is to make disciples.
When did you awaken to the symbiotic relationship of evangelism and discipleship? When I began teaching evangelism at Asbury College, I began to ask the question: I can see how Jesus is personally leading people to know Him and the Kingdom. But what’s His strategy for reaching the world? That’s what He came to do. And then it dawned on me. His strategy is in making disciples who will replicate what He’s doing with them. When I began to see that discipling was the fabric out of which Jesus’ evangelism evolved, it revolutionized my understanding of ministry. And
I began to try to find ways to do it. I remember the next morning in class, I told my students, “I will be here early in the morning at 6 o’clock. If anyone wants to come and pray with me and study the Bible together, you are welcome.” That started over 50 years ago, and I have been doing that in one way or another ever since. As I have been doing this, I’ve learned more and more about how evangelism is perpetuated through discipling... and where there is true discipling, evangelism is assured. If you are truly doing evangelism, you will take care of those people that you bring to Christ. You will not turn them out into the world without someone to lead them. We’ve got to unite these two, and that’s what I have been trying to do.
What are the consequences of separating evangelism and discipleship? When you start to separate the two, you become departmentalized so that you miss the reason behind it. If evangelism is only making known the gospel and you don’t see the ultimate objective, then you really do not assure any reproduction of what has been taught. The very fact that we come to Christ implies that we will follow Him. So we become followers, disciples. You don’t have to be a theologian to read the gospels and realize why He preached, why He healed. He focused His ministry on making disciples, those who would catch His heartbeat and His vision and then go forth and reproduce what they learned.

GO WHERE THE FISH ARE BITING RICK WARREN
27
ReThinking Outreach Rick Warren – Conference Speaker
RETHINKING OUTREACH In 32 years of planting and leading Saddleback Church, I’ve learned some key lessons about evangelism and outreach. One of the most important is that it’s a waste of time to fish in a spot where the fish aren’t biting. Wise fishermen move on. They know that fish eat at different times of the day in different places. How does this apply to evangelism and ministry? Simple. Just like wise fishermen, as leaders we have to focus on the most receptive people in our area and move on when we sense a dead end. This is not a marketing principle; it’s a basic New Testament principle. Jesus illustrated it in His parable of the sower. When you sow seed, some of it falls on rocky ground, some on stony ground, some on hard ground, and some on good soil. Wouldn’t it be great if we knew what the good soil was and could sow all our seed there? Why waste seed, time, effort, energy and money? Remember that it’s God’s job to prepare the soil and our job to sow the
Jesus knew this truth very well. That’s why He said, “Go to the people who will listen.” When He sent the disciples out to evangelize, He told them, “If a home or town refuses to welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet” (Matthew 10:14, NCV). That statement is significant. Jesus instructed His disciples to leave the unresponsive place and move on to other soil. Far more people in the world are ready to receive Christ than the number of people who are ready to share it. We should constantly ask God, “God, who are You preparing right now for me to talk to?” To add another metaphor, if the fruit is ripe, you don’t have to yank it off the tree. The apple comes off easily. Paul’s strategy in planting churches and preaching was to go through the open doors and to not waste time banging on the closed ones. Has someone ever said to you, “Pastor, I think before we go after any new people we ought to go back and round up all the old people who’ve left the church?” This is a guaranteed strategy for church decline because often the people who have left have resolved to be unreceptive to
Just like wise fishermen, as leaders we have to focus on the most receptive people in our area. seed. God uses all kinds of sovereign things like divorce, crises, death, economic problems, government shutdowns, losing a job, a new baby or a new job to prepare the soil. But God uses you to sow the seed. The fact is receptiveness to the gospel varies widely at different times in people’s lives. Sometimes people are very open to the gospel. Sometimes they’re very closed. And receptivity doesn’t last forever.
your church’s mission and message. Reclaiming someone who’s gotten upset and cantankerous takes 10 times more energy than to go out and win someone who hasn’t yet trusted in Jesus. God has called us to feed sheep—not corral goats. Growing churches focus on reaching receptive people while non-growing churches focus on re-enlisting inactive people.

WHAT’S GONE WRONG—AND HOW CAN WE FIX IT?
LARRY OSBORNE
ReThinking Outreach
33
Larry Osborne – Conference Speaker
RETHINKING OUTREACH “My hope is in Jesus’s promise. He said He would build His Church, and the gates of hell could not hold it back.” God expects us to be spiritually contagious. He desires that those who hang around us will see our good deeds and glorify Him on the day He visits. Yet, too often today the world that hangs around us seems to see something else. And what they see doesn’t draw them. It repels them. Those who love the darkness will always reject and ridicule those who bring the light. It’s nothing new. It shouldn’t surprise us when we are rejected or persecuted.
When Christ has genuinely been set apart as Lord, people will be drawn to Him. They will want to find out more. It happened to Jesus and the early church. It will happen to us. But at the same time, as Jesus and the early Church were being persecuted, they were also drawing people to themselves. They were contagious, so much so that the early Church exploded with growth despite fierce Roman, Jewish and Satanic opposition. So what’s happened today? Why does the Western Church see the persecution and rejection without the corresponding contagious attraction and growth? How is it that we’ve become either irrelevant (a quaint historical preservation society) or repulsive (a narrow-minded and intolerant slice of society) in the eyes of our peers?
eBook Mission Creep: The 5 Subtle Shifts
To understand what’s gone wrong and what we can do to fix it, it’s helpful to compare evangelism and discipleship in the Church today with what God originally intended. We’re supposed to be a Church where three things happen: (1) evangelism is natural, (2) people are changed, and (3) our communities are made better. Let’s look at each one of these traits more closely to see what’s gone wrong.

RETHINKING WITNESS Every church leader has defining moments in his or her ministry. I remember mine. It was actually a story someone told me about Billy Graham, but I’ll never forget hearing
said, “I’ll show you,” and led them to the speakers’ green room. I remember hearing Billy Graham say, “… tears shed for others is a sign of strength.”

it. To be honest, I’m not even certain if it’s completely accurate, but this story clearly captures the essence of Dr. Graham’s approach to evangelism. Backstage at a Billy Graham crusade, some of the local pastors asked one of the crusade organizers, “What is the source of Billy’s effectiveness?” The organizer looked at them and
When I first wanted to start planting churches, I felt the Lord ask me, “Larry are you willing to fast for 40 days and pray before you plant?” I was used to fasting a day or two, but 40 days? I futilely tried to rationalize the Spirit’s voice away, but I really wanted to plant churches to reach lost people. So I finally promised God a 40-day fast. It was brutally wonderful. My spiritual hat is off to those who do this yearly. Once in a lifetime was enough for

FINDING YOUR PERSON OF PEACE ALEX ABSALOM
51
ReThinking Witness Alex Absalom – Conference Speaker
RETHINKING WITNESS Since 2010, I’ve served as the leader of missional innovation at RiverTree Church in Northeast Ohio. As part of a team working to help the church move further down the missional path, one of the first things we taught was this missional strategy called Person of Peace. It is the strategy Jesus gives to help us naturally and easily identify where we are called to go. I believe that many disciples can be released to go out as witnesses simply by implementing this basic strategy. The Person of Peace concept contains within it the essence of missional DNA. Lived out in practice, finding your Person of Peace accelerates your mission.
Lived out in practice, finding your Person of Peace accelerates your mission. So how do you find your Person of Peace? Below are five characteristics I’ve found quite helpful. I want to stress that your Person of Peace is not a Christian (this is about reaching lost people who won’t otherwise be touched by the Gospel), yet is someone who:
1. Welcomes you. This article is an excerpt from Alex Absalom’s new eBook, The Viral Gospel: How Finding Your Person of Peace Accelerates Your Mission. To read the full eBook, download it for FREE at: exponential.org
2. Receives you (and thus, probably unknowingly at first, receives Jesus in you). 3. Serves you. 4. You intentionally invest in. 5. Operates as a gatekeeper, opening relational doorways into their network of relationships.
Part of the liberating factor for us as Christians is that the Person of Peace only works properly with those who are willing, so it is the very opposite of manipulation. We taught this repeatedly to the men and women at RiverTree who would become the leaders of the first generation of missional communities. We kept bringing them back to the challenge of this question: “Who are you called to love intentionally?” If the answer is a particular community (e.g., bikers, high school students, families with preschoolers), then probably that context will be where your Person of Peace is, since clearly you feel called to that community. As a family, we have lived this process. Originally from England, in 2007 God called us as missionaries to the United States. Our journey of faith saw us landing in Oklahoma City, finding ourselves in a new country where we had no favor, knew hardly anyone and barely understood the culture—or even the accent! So Hannah and I did what we always do: We prayed and asked God to show us our Person of Peace. This time, it was a family who lived in our neighborhood. They were out walking past our house when I happened to be doing yard work. A first conversation ensued, and before I knew it our family had been invited for dinner, and our new friends were busy serving us with gusto. They opened up a whole network of relationships for us in our neighborhood. These various households became our extended family—adopting us foreigners at all the holidays, doing life together, coming and going out of homes and generally building great relationships.

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you … .” 2 Tim. 1:6 NIV
EXPONENTIAL 2015 THEME TERRI SALIBA He knew he was on death row. He knew he had little time left to say the things he desperately wanted to tell those he loved. From a cold, dark cell in Rome, Paul penned his last letter to this young man from Lystra that he had mentored since his second
days and thinking hard about what it means to “fan into flame the gift of God.” Like Timothy, inside every follower of Jesus is the spark of multiplication. When that spark is “fanned into a flame,” it can ignite a multiplication movement powerful enough to accomplish the mission of Jesus. But it takes friction—the quick strike of the match against a rough surface—to start the process of turning a spark into a flame and ultimately a raging fire. Do you believe that every follower has a gift meant to be multiplied in
Highlighting their journey and fruit, we’ll be hearing from and telling the stories of leaders that have at times, endured scrutiny and “friction” to follow their deep conviction for multiplication. These leaders realize that their success is not in “my spark” or even in igniting it in others, but rather in “fanning into flame” a missional multiplication movement that began with what God initiated in their heart, thinking and priorities.
missionary journey. The urgency and passion are almost tangible as he exhorts Timothy:
others’ lives? Do you believe that in every believer lies the heart of a movement for God?
Throughout the next year, Exponential is getting back to our multiplication roots as we focus on lighting a fire of urgency for multiplication and creating the friction that brings conviction within every leader and church to ignite a multiplication movement. I hope you’ll join us at Exponential East and West, and online throughout the year, for what we believe is a critical conversation for the church, church planters and our world.
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” (2 Tim. 1: 6-7).
Knowing that each Christ follower has the potential to ignite a multiplication movement shapes our core values, priorities and decision making. The commitment to multiply now rather than “later, when we can afford it” is similar to the friction of striking the match. With that commitment come hard, seemingly foolish decisions— delaying a building campaign, releasing a staff member to start a plant, encouraging others to be part of a planting team, investing in interns, etc.
Terri Saliba is the conference director for Exponential. She has served with Exponential for five years. Terri met Jesus later in life at the local church where she learned to love and disciple through her roles in children’s ministry and team leadership. A native of the Bronx, she shares her story of redemption with anyone who will listen.
Knowing that each Christ follower has the potential to ignite a multiplication movement shapes our core values, priorities and decision making.
Paul knew that inside this soft-spoken man whose faith “proved genuine” was a spark with the potential to ignite a raging fire—a widespread movement for the gospel. At Exponential 2015, we’ll be focusing on these words Paul wrote in his last
