9X9X4 house by the cliff

residence / studio project

9X9X4 house by the cliff is a residential experiment. The house challenges to respect the aura of the site which situated in King Island, over the Alaskan Sea. The intention was to speak more with little, however not to compromise the basic essence of a house. The house sits in the cliff, or rather becomes a part of the cliff. It ďŹ ts in the natural depression without hindering the

natural topography. The site lines are maintained and are in-tact. The name is derived by its geometry which are three 9X9 m2 squares in the ďŹ rst floor and one 9X9 m2 square in the floor beneath.

The approach to the house is from the 9X9 courtyard open to the sky. A narrow staircase brings you to the courtyard 3 meter beneath the ground level. The courtyard opens up to the public spaces of the house, which are the living and dining spaces, again 9X9 in dimension. Then there is the 9X9 cantilevered inďŹ nity pool overlooking the sea. The pool is connected with both the courtyard and the living area. Here one can enjoy his martini while relaxing and hearing the soothing sound of the sea.

The geometry of the house is dictated by the ďŹ rst level of the house which is a careful tessellation of three squares. One reaches second level (which is the level beneath the ďŹ rst level) using a staircase which is sandwiched by two glass walls. The second level consists of the private functions; the bedroom and an attached bathroom. Both of these functions take 9X9 meter square area. The south-west side is full curtain glazing to enjoy the sea and sunset. The segregation of the bedroom and the bathroom is by a concrete wall which emphasises the linearity of the overall geometry.

The house questions the very notion of house and its functionality. While no fancy dĂŠcor is provided in the interior, one is still awe struck by the ambience of the overall structure. The tectonics of the house remain simple throughout. The idea is to direct the attention towards the site and the sea. To create this effect only two materials are used, namely, concrete and glass. After all, what more can a person ask for when he has a stunning view in front, and a glass of ďŹ ne martini to enjoy.

CHAPTER VI

death.

manifestos for architecture

23rd MAY 2063 I lay awake in my own dream, For the creation I created was melancholy Paranoid I become, at thrill of the unknown Time stops as I move on Passion or lust, curiosity or fear Give me truth, I bleat and yell What drives you to live some more Is it breath or hunger for the same? Peace is in death, obliteration from tyranny With this thought I surrender myself To have a beginning something has to end Then to have utopia will architecture end? I feel nothing, only numbness all-over How could this be? Did I resurrect.....

The briefs demanded an outlet to explore ‘PARALLEL PROJECTIONS’ as a gateway to the inventory of the parts of the architects envisionment getting lost along the process of it being implemented.

This project is all about looking for question within the questions. When the architecture around you evolves from the utmost adulterated ideas - What are you? What are you not? We lust for a change and that change is an indispensable faculty. From the architecture in the mind to the drawings in a space plane and the outcomes in three dimensional space - All these become the pure parallel projections of the mind. This change brings in the question of apotheosis and ultimately the reality - that is where you look for the real answer. ‘Manifestos of Architecture’ are the compilation of selected excerpts from my personal diary. These excerpts explain my journey in the quest of becoming an ‘architect’. A journey marked by a spectrum of emotions arising due to the lust for truth. And hence the expedition unravels the various questions leading to an obvious dilemma. Each chapter revolves around a question leading to a paradox. This paradox filters the architect’s understanding of the known and the unknown. Rationality triggers the thought of right and wrong, fiction and reality whereas everything coexists in unison. A man named marc finds himself in “The library of babel” and comes across ‘Manifestos for Architecture’ that has not been read ever before. Despite no views, the title of the book enamors him so much that he begins reading it. With each new chapter and each new idea he is inspired and taken to an all new world of his imagination. Religion, economy, politics, and even the first world problems are obliterated. Ultimately he realises UTOPIA and DYSTOPIA exist in parallel. HOUSING UNIT ISOMETRIC VIEW Flexibility of the grid binds the layers so intricately that ecosystems remain intertwined to serve the residents of utopia.

REALITY - FICTION - DIGITAL - ANALOGUE - PHYSICAL - VIRTUAL - NATURAL ARTIFICIAL - SUPERNATURAL - CONSCIOUS - SUBCONSCIOUS All of the realms uniямБed by the robust grid

DYSTOPIA - SUSPENDED ANIMATION UTOPIA allures with a buffet of free choices….. it is not what it commemorates but what it exploits to seduce mankind. While phenomenology blinds man to think pragmatically, sensuality has been known to choreograph the mind to embrace what in reality is ostensible. PRISONERS OF CHOICE….

Remembering Corbusier

Installation / Reaslied Project

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, was the master behind the city of Chandigarh. Sixty six years after its inception, the essence of the master is still felt in the city. Simple yet elegant, the robust grid still dictates the lifestyle of the fellow inhabitants. Before leaving the city, Corbusier gifted the Open Hand monument to remind us, in every breath we take, what this city stood for. The installation is an attempt to remember the master. Facing the Open Hand the installation stands solitary. Only steps, a frame, and a platform upon which rests the masters’ chair. All we can do is imagine; imagine the master sitting in tranquillity, embracing the monument. In this nothingness we breathe the essence‌.

The briefs desired to transform a public space to a more gender-sensitive space and hence to create a center for youth. The idea was move beyond the superficial by engaging the audience psychologically. The two dimensional newspaper panel spoke about gender sensitive issues and stigmas hence rendering the mind to break free of the stereotypes that exists in our minds.

#MARGIN

Paper is an efficient tool to stir the public opinion because they can reach wide and specific audiences, and it reaches out to people who are otherwise isolated by poverty. An eye-catching poster or flyer with strong visualisation does not necessarily need words on it. They can hence also reach illiterates or deaf.

What is MARGIN ?

Margin is a newspaper on social issues and architecture. It deals with the stereotypes prevalent in the society. We curate conversations to tell a story about the role of architecture in today’s world. We make them available for you to do with as you please: to think on, to talk about, to design with. Feel free to take them and run, mis-read and butcher. After all, they are only ideas. Margin takes the form of normal A1 sized papers‭ that can also function as posters‭. Each newspaper has a theme and content is derived from a series of discussions, debates, interviews, and research into the spatial implications of epochal shifts presently occurring in the information industry. The issue focuses on gender sensitivity and the urban poor. It tries to camouflage architecture with these discussions which were originally triggered by the posters.
