Practical Response Peer Review & Formative Feedback Illustrator’s Name: Aggie Overarching Theme

Children’s perception of gender roles

Specific Subject

Gender equality, education, feminism

Research Question Product(s)

The influence of fairy tales on children’s perceptions of gender.

Proposed Outcomes

Series of books based on real stories of success and liberation about other girls around the world, to raise awareness of issues happening in parts of the world and to encourage people to act – overarching aim is to break the cycle of global poverty. – Potential collaboration in the future with organisations like Girl Effect (see boards for more details).

Media Processes

Digital/Digital combined with pencil – because I am familiar with this process and because of the timescale, this is the most time effective process for me.

Question 1

Do you think this is achievable for the time I have left? – Or should I create a set number of double pages and finish for 603?

Question 2

I have thought about creating a series of posters instead, but I thought creating a book would be more engaging for the child reader. What do you think?

Question 3

Do you think there are improvements that could be made?

Short children’s picture book about Malala Yousafzai (see boards for more details)

Peer Feedback 1 by Bex. Comment on the initial relationship between the Theme and the proposed Subject Strengths

Suggestions

Strong link – I like how the aim is to show a powerful female – focus on what women do not/have not had.

Will you be showing/touching upon how the male is perceived in your illustrations? Will be stereotyped?

Comment on the appropriateness, scope, and ambition of the proposed outcomes in relation to the subject. Strengths

Suggestions

I think creating a book is really appropriate for your chosen demographic and issue (how children are influenced by what they read and what they watch.

The proposed number of pages is quite large! Could you distil the story down? I think its great that you understand this may be too much – and therefore do it as a 603 brief – this may be more practical allowing you to develop ideas in cop but still create the artwork.

Comment on the visual investigation and development of ideas in response to theme and subject. Strengths

Suggestions

You have recognised the style of book illustration you feel works which will make it easier for you to begin your own.

Maybe start investigating character design first.

Comment on the choice of media/format/series etc. in relation to the outcome. Strengths

Suggestions

Good that you already know your focus will How will you show the graphic scenes? With be on visually communicating the story with choice of colour etc.? minimal writing – this will urge you to visualise more details you won’t be writing about.

General Comments Instead of the children’s book, you could investigate in creating an information booklet or digital booklet/guide for The Malala Fund focusing on Malala as inspiration.

Comment on the visual investigation and development of ideas in response to theme and subject. Strengths

Suggestions

You have looked at a relevant contextual references and your style will work well.

Start drawing scenes and character design. Start using a sketchbook!

Comment on the choice of media/format/series etc. in relation to the outcome. Strengths

Suggestions

You’ve really thought about the story and format. Clear plan! The media is also appropriate for your style.

How are you planning to draw the graphic scenes without showing graphic scenes? Colour? Texture?

General Comments Propose a digital version? I prefer book to posters it’ll go with your style and sticks to dissertation question more, and I think its what you’d prefer to do. If it gets too much, take the images you’ve done at that point and just do posters.
