STUDIO PRACTICE Project Proposal Name Blog Address Aggie Date 3/02/16 a-‐mardiyah1316.blogspot.co.uk Rationale For my final major project, I am going to write and illustrate a children's book for a humanitarian cause -‐ specifically, to develop girls' positive perceptions of themselves and shift how others see and value them. This project builds upon the children’s book project I did for Cop3 in which I expressed my interest to develop more books based on real girls around the world to encourage girls to act upon their own beliefs and achieve their dreams, as it is SO important! This brief will allow me to strengthen my skills and develop a portfolio suited for my chosen career as a Children’s Illustrator, Character and Background Designer. As well as realising one of my life goals: helping people by using my skills and to try making a positive impact in the world -‐ help raise awareness of issues happening around the world, encourage empathy to people early in life and increase prosocial behaviours. Themes / Subjects • Feminism/Gender equality • Girls/women’s empowerment • Poverty Alleviation • Human Welfare • Education • Character • Publishing • Narrative • Children Audience / Context • Children • Parents • Everyone

Set in a city in southern Malawi, the story will follow the journey of a girl whose dream is to become a policewoman. However, Aisha lives in a society where girls are second-‐class citizens and education isn’t taken seriously for girls. The plan is to eventually get the book funded by United Nations Foundation GirlUp SchoolCycle Campaign and published to raise awareness about the current situation that these schoolgirls face in Malawi, while also raising money to help them! Products -‐ For the for purpose of this module, I will either submit: A fully illustrated 32 page book OR (if too ambitious for the time I have left of this module, I haven’t decided yet. Need advice.) Visual Development/Character design sheets and 3 fully illustrated scenes/double page spreads. Practical Skills / Media / Formats • • •

Illustrations/designs must strongly emphasise storytelling and personality in environments and characters. Digital -‐ Process similar to that of my CoP3 children’s book. Styling and colour -‐ I’d like to try incorporating a touch of African art into my work.

Depending on what I decide to submit: • Book/page size: Square format -‐ 25 x 25 cm (slightly bigger than CoP3 book), OR • Visual Development/Character design sheets at A3. Additional Project Information The challenge of the project is to communicate the reality of the situation for Malawi schoolgirls while retaining and celebrating the joy of Malawi culture. Not a grim assessment of life in Malawi but rather raise awareness about the current situation in a positive way. I have gotten in touch with the journalist who wrote the article about the problems that these schoolgirls face in Malawi (click here for article) – She is also the co-‐founder of SchoolCycle – and have very graciously accepted to help me with this project (providing me with more info etc. to help me gain a broader insight of the living conditions there, which will help bring the book/story to life).
