HELLO You are holding issue 2 in your hands or maybe it‘s on the desk in front of you, who knows. And this is the introduction. But wait up; what the hell am I going to write here? I was never asking myself this question when I had the idea to launch a fresh contemporary DIY art & culture magazine - or however you want to call it. As a graphic designer and non-texter - before you start - you see the layout-grid in front of you, what font you are going to choose, which artists or idols are to be banned on paper, what engaging projects should be documented inside and how the logo will look like. But you don‘t think about the introduction text at all... Damn it. But hey, come on let‘s be honest with each other, when you are looking at any magazine do you really care about the introduction? Sit back, take five and just enjoy this issue... it‘s full of creative blood, sweat and ink drips. Yours truly

Marc C. Woehr goes to Miami December 2nd - 9th, 2008 What exactly is “Primary Flight”? It’s a Street Art Festival that took place for the second time in the Wynwood Art District of Miami. 40 of the worldwide most known graffiti and street art artists were invited to present their art. It was organized by BOOKSIIII, Lynn Yohana Howard, Logan Hicks and Anthony Spinello. Their goal is to showcase the works of the artists in the street, the way they are – without nick-nack and hypocrisy. Your trip to Miami dates back a while. What springs to your mind first, when you think back? The approach to Miami after our 19 hour travel. The view was gigantic. And we knew that our dream had now become reality. I also remember the first sight of the ocean from ourhotel balcony, the smell of the salty sea, the sound of the waves. And the nice warm t-shirt weather – all in the beginning of December! Who is “we”? That’s me and my art partner Frerk (Marco Eckert). Together we created the wall on the spot. We work very well together, even though we have arguments once in a while. But that’s normal, isn’t it? And as long as our teamwork is fruitful and turns into something good, it’s even benefitial. Our styles harmonize well. Besides, it can’t be a coincidence, that we’re born the same day and our first names are almost alike. (laughs)

Describe your style. What’s special about you both and your walls? My art is rooted in graffiti, the archetype of Street Art. But in my 20 year old career as an artist I developed, because with graffiti you can’t express yourself so well, I think. I still work with the spray can, but it’s just one of many media I use. Frerk has also been painting for many years. However working on a real and big wall is quite new to him though. I can help him with my experience. In return he has helped me to become free from the strict rules of graffiti. Besides, his figures and my house facades complement wonderfully. Together we create modern, fleeting and distinctive/unique pieces of art, that fit into today’s time.

What exactly was your assignment on the spot? We were fortunate to create a wall directly at the main street that led to SCOPE. It is one of those fairs, that took place in the context of Art Basel Miami. The wall was 35 meters long and was located straight next to the area of Obey, one of the most famous American artists in the region of Street Art. So, we couldn’t have pictured it better. Fairgoers were constantly passing by our wall. Besides, interviews were going on right in front of our wall, as well as some photo shootings with models. That was PR of the finest for us. How did this journey come off? The invitation came to us by Anne-Katrin Scherer from MODART Magazine (web.modarteurope.com). I thought I misheared, when she told me that we were invited to partake at Primary Flight, among just one other german artist (Stefan Strumbel). Prior to this event we have been able to take part at one other live act – at MODART Creative Boat Party in Basel, Switzerland (Art Basel). But to be part of Art Basel in Miami was a whole new ball game. Was this event somehow documented? The MODART Magazine has installed a blog (Miami tales) on the MODART website (http://web.modarteurope.com/artist-blog/miami-blog). Thanks to the diligent work of Nhu, Harlan and Lutz everybody can look up, what we experienced during the days and nights in Miami. Who did you get to know? As I mentioned before: Obey including his whole family. A very nice guy despite of his great success. But also Mr Brainwash and some gallery owners. Especially Tomy, a Columbian gallery owner, I have taken into my heart, because we had so much fun together. With Shane (Art Whino) from Washington D.C. we now started a joint project. Let yourself be surprised. All I say is: It’s about sneakers. Which experience will remain unforgettable to you? Oh, there are many! That I got to know the chairman of the Axel-Springer publishing house (Dr. Mathias Döpfer) trough a crazy coincidence after I’ve seen a long report on TV about him just a week ago, that was awesome! Other highlights for me were the open air concert of Yelle on the beach and the SCOPE final party in the famous SHORE club. But also the typical American experiences remain memorable: the barbecue man directly next to our wall; the police car that was watching over us with blue lights all the time; the illuminated panels of Art Miami; the eight-lane roads in the middle of the city; the DJ’s at the stores; the many cool partys and much more. Then the cordial heart of Anne, who served us with delicious food. All in all it was an unforgettable experience – in an artistic and humanly sense. ._.

Why do you think it’s called a party?

Because deep down every human knows that the best thing about us hairless monkeys is our will to team up and do things together. Gathering a crowd might not always make things easier but it’s a water proof guarantee for more fun and a better show. A simple and stimulating truth, celebrated here by Weactivists Jason Lee and Stash – Go team, Go!

Mikhail Wassmer is a 22 year old swiss/canadian, who spent half his life in Canada and the other half in Switzerland. After finishing an apprenticeship, that didn‘t fulfill him and with nothing holding him back, he set out to New York. That‘s where his journey began. How did you get into photography? It was at a party in Brooklyn, I met Zandy Mangold (zandymangold.com), who was shooting for the New York Post. I started assisting him and he got me an internship with Eric Ogden (ericogden.com) .Soon I realized that being a photographer, isn‘t as absurd of a goal as I thought it was until then. When are you the most productive? When I‘m in a surrounding that I feel comfortable in. What does a typical day look like? Hard to say, I‘m currently in a situation where I have no typical day. Days tend to include a bed, breakfast, some kind of work, music and a conversation. What‘s your next personal project? I‘m currently working on a project, in which I want to break down what home means to me. After returning home from being in completely different surroundings for over a year, I noticed that my personal views have shifted and I‘d like to visualize this. What would be your dream project? I‘ve never really thought about that. Where do you get your inspiration? Music, cinema and everyday life. I‘m currently hooked on (french) new wave cinema. Music is a bit harder to explain. It‘s a mix of classical, electronic, folk and ambient music. Artists like Goldmund, Max Richter, The Books and Kashiwa Daisuke, occupy a large amount of my time at the moment. What people do you admire? People who do what they love. What is important to you? What I love. What do you love? My five senses, music, dining, relationships (to both friends and partners) and conversations. Tell us an important lesson you have learned in life so far? To live it as intense, fulfilling and aware as possible.

M ICROB OT The actual surreal drawings of Swiss interactive designer Microbot remind on Dali. Eventhough that was never the artist‘s idea. How did you get into what you do? I just liked creating own stuff and worlds for all my life. When I got a computer I liked that there were lots of people creating images with it and sharing their stuff in the web. I wanted to join this too and see the possibilities - so I just started. Bought a tablet, installed a few programs and tried on error. What are your sources of inspiration? It can be everyday things like music, games or a good movie. Everything can give you a good basic idea, theme or story. It‘s pretti much at random. What do you think about Dali? Dali was a genius! He created places which no one could imagine - aside from him. He tried thinking different about things and developed his unique imagination. Can you imagine what a beautiful mind this man must have had? I also like the story of Dr. Freud. Both of them were exploring subconsciousness and dreams. When we talk about Dali, let me point to Yacek Yerka. He‘s a living artists doing the most amazing surrealism paintings these days. What‘s your favorite personal work? Why? Its hard, I dont really have one. I like blue moon, drug free zone my new one red apple and metal heart. They‘re all very personal work so they mean more then other works to me. How does a typical day look like? Its pretty much random. Sometimes I get up at 3pm, sometimes I get up at 6am. It depends on when I go sleep. I had days when I went to bed at 1pm and slept till 10pm or even longer. So I don‘t really have a typical day. What‘s your next personal project? I‘m actually planing on some sky citys and isometrical paintings. Also I started a new painting of some kind of statue. It will be called „the beauty in her“ and I try to put in some secret elements. What would be your dream project? A project that has no limit to the budget is something I dream about. Or some really huge painting where I have lots of time to create it, which means big budget. Most of the time I‘m doing 6-8h works for clients since they‘re not able to pay more. My personal work is like 80+ hours. So my personal projects are usually the most fun and best projects at the moment. What do you love? My rats, my friends/family, guitar, music in general. I also love lots of art but not everything. I love surreal unique stuff the most. What people do you admire? My big friend from spain Jerico Santander, Peter Jaworovski from hejz who is always supporting me. Jesar One which became a good cyber friend too. And yeah, everyone who supported me - like you, Lain. You‘re an amazing person! Thats very rare these days. Wow. Thank you, Dave! Tell us an important lesson you have learned in life so far? Dont let people tell you what you can and can‘t do. Anything else you want to say? Thanks for the opportunity to be in this magazine. It‘s a big honor for me. And as usual Keep it real!

Five years ago on the dark east end streets of London, a collective of young artists were hungry for work and frustrated with the lack of opportunities offered by the large creative firms within the city. They met one night to discuss a way of taking destiny into their own hands, being their own boss and ultimately attracting a healthy stream of exciting clients ... Monorex was born! This would act as an umbrella brand for freelance creatives - a central hub they could call home, working in harmony with other exciting individuals in all areas of design. Monorex would operate differently than any other design studio, working in a tight knit family environment. Helping each other develop and improve, having fun and enjoying themselves on each project put before them... The secret ingredient! Based on a similar business structure to M.A.S.K (old skool cartoon), where artists would be picked on their particular skills and characteristics depending on the brief at hand. Aiming to approach each project with a fresh and unique outlook, Monorex have strived to push the creative boundaries wherever possible. Started with only a handful of artists, Monorex now boasts ties with over 50 freelance artists Worldwide. Artists include: Teck 1, CHU, Jimi Crayon, Inkie, Sickboy, Alfa, Wen, Miss LED, Reeps 1, Mr K, Stika, Wany 1 to name a few. Current clients include: Reebok, Xbox, Toshiba, Ubisoft, Tiger Beer, Edding to name a few... Watch this space!

SECRET WARS One of Monorex’s most successful concepts has been the live art battle Secret Wars - where artists battle over a 90 min period (1 on 1) using only black & white paint. Set up as a “knock-out” cup competition with an artist being voted out of each consecutive round, the aim of the game is to visually beat your opponent and win over both guest judges and the crowd vote. Secret Wars has been running for just over three years, starting originally in London but now operating on a global scale. Secret Wars will soon be recognised as fully fledged sport at the Olympics... Watch this space! Last year the SW guys travelled 6000 miles around Europe in a mobile camper van battling local artists from countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Germany. They have also collaborated with Reebok and Ecko on various high profile events, with more collaborations planned this year the Secret Wars team have the World at their feet. Secret Wars will be starting in Zurich in March 09... Check the website for more details! -.Txt: Mr T Pics: various Monorex members

Speerstra Galleries Post Graffiti and Contemporary Art Located in Geneva and Bursins, Switzerland, focusing on the American and European Graffiti movement, Speerstra Galleries present internationally renowned writers from the 70’s and 80’s from New York, such as John „Crash“ Matos, Chris „Daze“ Ellis, John „Jonone“ Perello and Aaron „Sharp“ Goodstone. Swiss Graffiti artists, Sigi „Dare“ Von Koeding and „Smash 137“ from Basel. Rcf1, Honet, AlÎxone, Scandal and Mist from Paris, France. In 2001, the Speerstra Gallery opened its first space in Paris, France. In 2007, the gallery moved to Bursins in Switzerland. In October of 2008, Willem Speerstra opens his second Swiss artspace in the historic center of Geneva. For Willem, his work as an art collector and gallerist, is characterized by a genuine bond of trust and friendship between him and his artists. Devoting his entire professional life, towards the diffusion of Graffiti Art and its‘ integration into the art market and ultimately in the history of art.

Willem, when did you start to collect and work with Graffiti Art? I discovered Graffiti Art at the age of 11, while living in Amsterdam. My father bought this great painting from American Graffiti Artist „Dondi“ White (1961-1998). He is an art collector, who began to buy Graffiti Art in the early 80’s and opened his first gallery dedicated to Graffiti in 1984. Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper released the so -called Graffiti Bible „Subway Art“ in 1984. I discovered, that trains and walls were painted since the early 70’s in New York. This book became a turning point in my life. Ten years later, I started my own Graffiti Collection. Meeting the artists was a great experience and today the „Speerstra Collection“ has more than 200 paintings and works on paper. The galleries in Geneva and Bursins will be promoting their work through solo and group shows. What‘s your favorite painting from your collection? „Sky’s the Limit“ by Bill Blast, painted in 1983 (80’ x 112’). It is one of the biggest works in my collection. In 1976 Bill Blast, also know as „Wise“, painted on trains and basketball courts before working on canvas and showing in art galleries in Europe. This work of art has been in the „Speerstra Collection“ for over 25 years. Who buys Graffiti Art at your galleries? Our clients and visitors come from all different places and backgrounds. Some have been following the gallery for many years and others are totally new to Graffiti on canvas. Today’s Graffiti collectors were around 10 years old when it all started… (1980’s), they grew up with Graffiti painted on walls and trains and are not afraid to bring this form of art into their homes. Recently, international auction houses, such as Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Artcurial have been selling Graffiti Art and world records for paintings by Futura 2000, Jonone and Crash have been made. What do you think, what will Graffiti Art look like in 20 years? The movement is already 40 years old and young kids will always feel the need to express themselves. Graffiti exisits all around the world, from Brazil to China. Shows and events take place every year, as well as museum shows and more are planned in the near future, wait and see…

¬ Speerstra Gallery in Bursins, Switzerland ¬ Willem Speerstra in Bursins, Switzerland

What are your next exhibitions? In February, old school NY artist „Daze“ will exhibit his latest works on canvas and paper called „While the city sleeps, reflections on the 3rd rail“. This show is a reflection of Daze’s early years, while writing on New York city trains in the mid-70‘s. In March, the Geneva gallery will show Swiss born artist from Basel „Smash 137“ for the very first time. He is one of the most active writers worldwide today. Karambolage „contemporary typography“, a show not to be missed for all those in appreciation of the art of „Writing“.

NUMBER ONE (Graffiti magazine) The legendary Swiss NumberOne Graffiti magazine was thought to be dead. Different to many others we didn’t except these rumors. Way back in some dusty archives, in between old issues of pin up magazines, Amateur heaved NumberOne out of its nearly retirement. Much has changed since NumberOne was founded. The Internet has replaced many quality magazines throughout the last years. More than ever class and experience are required to prevail, for the readers’ sake. Since legends are immortal, from now on a part of Number One lives in a compacted format within Amateur Magazine. We are proud to give you the real McCoy. www.numberone-gear.com

What was your dream job, when you were 8? It definitely wasn‘t being a designer. I was more interested in playing outside and creating crazy chemical mixtures or brewing dangerous liquids. When did you know that you wanted to be a designer? I never really knew it. I just fell into it, which isn‘t a bad thing. After college, I wanted to take a year off (like most of the students), when my mother let me know about an entry-call for an art school. I applied for it, never thinking that it would work out. Imagine my surprise when I got in. How was the time after studying, til you found your way? After my studies at the Écal, I was a little fed-up with designing, so I did several „non-design-jobs“. After half a year, I went to Oslo to work in the studio of Norway Says, as an intern. It turned out to be very encouraging and I was quite motivated to do my own stuff afterwards. Now I have a great combination of being 60% employed as a graphic designer at CRIC print (www.cricprint.com) and having enough time to work for myself. What is your day like and what is your favorite time to work? Atelier? Coffee? I don‘t have an atelier. In my co-location, we have an „office room“ and half of this room became my working space. Because 2 „design-days“ aren‘t that much, I like to have somewhat of a plan as to what I‘m doing during the day. It stresses me out less. I take coffee-breaks spontaniously, sometimes more, sometimes less. Do you like to work in collaboration with other designers or do you prefer to work alone? I mostly work alone, but like to discuss my projects (or design-problems) with friends. Their objective points of view help me a lot.

Is there any designer from the present or the past, who you appreciate a lot?

Can you describe your way of design? What are you interested in?

No idea. Hopefully still happy with what I‘m doing, just a bit wiser... Interview: Thomas Walde & Florian Hauswirth (sachenmachen) What project has given you the most satisfaction? The Joker vases. It all began with a silly little sketch, which suddenly grew enormously. I really didn‘t expect it.

Project for the Passionswege of the Vienna Design Week 2008: „Tischerl“ Silver is mostly used for dining objects such as cutlery, candleholders and napkin rings. And for jewelery of course. I had the pleasure to work together with the ancient manufacturer ‚Die Wiener Silberschmiede‘. Their range of products includes cutlery from the royals of Habsburg, objects of the Wiener Werkstatt, as well as new drafts from contemporary designers. Instead of designing just one object for the table, I chose to do an entire table. The coffee table with this touch of nomadism, is a combination of handcraftet silverplate with CNC cut out legs. A combination of ancient knowledge with new technology. I was also playing around with materials, such as metal, plexiglass and MDF. -.Txt: Nicole Aebischer Pics: Klaus Fritsch (below), Nicole Aebischer

For their fifth anniversary the Pussiesparadise Crew invited 11 artists to the legendary KiFF in Aarau. Each of the creatives got a one-squaremeter big canvas, that had to be done before dinner. Cheers.

Five years ago the cool and likeable crew, with the strange name „Pussiesparadise“ started their art mission. A handfull of good friends began to make the streets more colorful. Today, besides their smooth blog with high-class photos, the creative label runs a small streetwearbrand. Check out their website, pussielovers!

Big Geezers Tour – Book and DVD Work in Progress & Bildschöne Bücher ISBN: 978-3-939181-03-3

Kim Young-Hee Sculpture 2D - Very Korean. Very European. Very Universal. rupa publishing ISBN: 978-3-940393-07-4 A presentation of the actual producing from international accredited, Corean artist Kim Young-Hee published by Munich based rupa publishing (they also published wellknown „the Nature of Snowboarding“ by Lozza some years ago). Kim Young-Hee‘s latest works of art are filigree, often illustrations of only a few centimetres in size, which are eternalised in a state of changelessness with the aid of photography. Available in German and English. Besides the normal illustrated book, there is a limited to 100 Collector’s Edition.

Big Geezers – a term here used to describe an international mix of artists who over the years have built friendships and used their common passion for painting towards various collaborations and shared moments around the world. In August 2007, Carhartt invited a bunch of the Big Geezers, including internationally known street artists, a photographer, two camera men, and a writer to go on a 3 week road trip: 5500 km in a nightliner. Along the way, the group was joined by new friends and old faces as the speed increased and the good vibes spread. Copenhagen, Oslo, Warsaw, Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava – in each city the Big Geezers painted inside a Carhartt store and outside in a public space. In both they were free to use the walls as they wanted. These painting sessions were also free; performances, which were open to the public. Art in action, and at every stop there was a great spirit of community and celebration for imagination, feelings that easily transferred to the hundreds of people who came in touch with Big Geezers on this trip. A year later, the paint is still on the walls for people to see and feel, but to have a look at the entire experience you’ll need the Book and film documenting the journey. See the details in the process; the differences in cities, colors and the shared love for painting. www.carhartt-streetwear.com www.bildschoene-buecher.de
