The Delights of River Cruising in Spring

Spring is the ideal time for our guided hikes and bike tours that allow you to venture further into destinations while enveloping yourself in the season of rebirth and renewal. Hike to the ruined fortress in Dürnstein, Austria, where Richard the Lionheart was once held, or ascend the steep Ravenna Gorge in Germany’s storybook Black Forest. Sunshine and gentle breezes perfectly set the scene as you pedal through the idyllic village of Kinderdijk, Netherlands, with its historic UNESCO-designated windmills.

The Netherlands’ famous tulips are at their most brilliant in April, while Austria, France and Germany are pretty in pink with jubilant spring cherry blossoms adorning local trees. Fresh white asparagus, known as spargel throughout Germany, creates a craze throughout many European countries and is utilized by our chefs to create exquisite dishes like asparagus risotto, while fresh seasonal strawberries are used in jams, breakfast bowls and desserts. Should you cruise around Easter, you may even be able to wander through the intimate Easter Markets in select cities.

Our Story

AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by three families, but our river cruise story began well before that. Co-Founder and President Rudi Schreiner was born in Vienna, at the heart of the Danube. In 1975, as part of a journalism assignment, he designed his first ship, a raft he took along the Amazon River. Soon thereafter he started working in travel, creating unique tour experiences in Europe.

When the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal was built in 1992, Rudi became a driving force in the river cruising industry. He later teamed up with co-founders Kristin Karst and Jimmy Murphy to start AmaWaterways. Born in Germany, Kristin brings extensive experience in travel, river cruising and customer service in her role as Executive Vice President. Rudi and Kristin partnered with Jimmy Murphy, a brilliant travel entrepreneur who built Brendan Vacations. His son, Gary, now carries on his father’s legacy in his roles as a co-owner and an active board member.

Since Rudi grew up along the banks of the Danube, each of our itineraries in this region is thoughtfully curated with the most authentic excursions, all under his guidance as the “Godfather of River Cruising.” Rudi and Kristin’s European heritage, along with relationships forged over the years, has also granted us special access to exclusive events just for our guests along the Danube River – and throughout Europe.
