Digital Tectonics Studio Self-organisation

Our Thesis in a broader sense directs towards designing a device which can analyze recyclable materials – site specific or at large, trying to explore techniques of evolving designs, emergent – architectural / non-architectural, from these elements and installing them at site but in a non-linear manner with a feedback loop analyzing and updating the form generation at any stage of the installation. All the components that form the system – a mobile 3D scanner, an agent allocating sensor, a simulator (a laptop), and some mobile phones, are making the execution process portable and energy efficient.

Grasshopper , as an parametric tool, was used in the simulation of self-generation of design. After we have a successful scanned 3D object we use grasshopper in the generation of form using properties derived out of the scanned object . _our first attempt was to generate a form from a single module (brick). _our second attempt was to apply 3D physics on the module. In order to attach themselves to other modules, generating a self-organized Form.

_applying physics to objects _01 cylinders falling and colliding

Our first exercise was to familiarize with the kangaroo physics components for grasshopper, generating a simulation of how objects could be given a gravitational forces and how they could collide with each other. Simulating the gravitational force on objects, we started by applying the uninary forces onto a set of points which collide onto a base surface. The simulated point is then given the form of a cylinder, which is again a surface for collision for all the above cylinders.

_applying physics to objects

_02 attraction to individual modules; self organizing form Next step was to simulate a module of brick attracted towards each other to generate a self organizing form. With the help of the power law component, we applied the attraction based on the positions of each modules with respect to the other modules. Hence orienting their faces to congregate.

_aligning modules to a surface

_03 extracting parameters for organizing modules Our thesis focuses on generating a form from extracting information of the scanned object, our next study was to use a module which was not a perfect brick, and then aligning the module to a surface using the parameters of width and height of that specific 3D scanned object. With this we can change the shape of the surface which would be the basic shape of the form, and the module would adjust the distances of stacking within the surface by the extracted width and height of the module. This would be the projected outcome which we our aiming to achieve from the self-organization of the modules based on their geometry and parameters.

_aligning modules to each other

_04 aligning modules with their parameters As our earlier experiment was aligning modules onto a surface, we aligned a module to the top surface of the other module hence developing new module. This is another study of how selected surfaces could attract to each other and bond together to generate a new form. We choose to work on grasshopper for the studio as we progress and identify the algorithms which would help in identifying the parameter of organizing deformed modules of waste construction material.

Based on what we have achieved , it seems that the world of physics in grasshopper is based on objects moving with forces, whereas in processing using different 3D physics libraries, we are able to create a defined world of physics which is external to the object. We would like to investigate into processing as well as simulate in grasshopper the as much as possible for us to deliver a self organizing structure.

The self-organizing modules grasshopper script generated was inspired from examples sourced through grasshopper3D.com. We aim at using them to simulate the generated forms like the one displayed above by identifying the parameters of each module.
