Some moments are unique and some years are unforgettable! For Les Ambassadeurs, 2014 – our 50th anniversary year – has been one of those moments and one of those years.

It all began with a jubilee collection launched in a strictly limited edition with the support of six selected watch brands. Being involved right from the start in the creation and development of a watch and then accompanying it right the way through to being handed over to the final customer was a whole new experience for us. We were thus thrilled to see the new owners of these watches find their own place in our history by becoming Ambassadors in their turn. In May, we celebrated 50 years of existence at jubilee events attended by our partner brands and a handpicked circle of customers. At the three gala evenings held in Lugano, Zurich and Geneva, we toasted our anniversary in the company of 1,000 guests. The autumn of this year saw the return of our historical Omega brand. When Les Ambassadeurs opened its first boutique in Geneva in 1964, Omega was the brand with which it all began and which made its mark on our history over several decades. The joy of once again welcoming Omega back among the Leading Names and continuing to write our history together is a magnificent jubilee gift. The year is now drawing to a close and it’s time for the public at large to enjoy the celebrations. To round off the year, we are cooperating with the famous Sotheby’s auctioneering house in organising an auction of 14 different paintings specially made for us on the theme of watches. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Musée international d’horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, to ensure that future generations will in turn be able to grasp and appreciate the history of the Swiss watch industry and that they continue to cultivate the fascination for mechanical timepieces. Dear customers, dear partners, dear colleagues: this year has been deeply moving and I have been thrilled to experience this chapter of our history with you. On behalf of Les Ambassadeurs, I wish to thank you for your loyalty and your support. Sharing with you our enthusiasm for watches and jewellery is what daily drives us to give the very best of ourselves.

sea is also an obvious source of inspiration for Ulysse Nardin, which explores this vast territory with the Maxi Marine Chronometer. Encircled by a 43 mm steel case, water-resistant to 200 m and topped with a notched bezel, the blue dial is reminiscent of the ocean and displays extensive functionality. Off-centre seconds, date and power reserve indications are deployed on a vintage look dial. Hublot now brings its touch of sporty fusion to the St. Moritz and Lugano boutiques. The watches bearing the big H crossed with a wavy bar are not limited to powerful chronographs, nor to the all-black models that have forged the renown of the Manufacture based in Nyon, near Geneva. Hublot is also a profoundly diverse brand. Colour fans will love the new Pop Art (3) and the many gem-set variations of the legendary Big Bang, while Haute Horlogerie enthusiasts will take a close look at its complications. Ultra-thin elegant watches rub shoulders with tourbillons (4), and extremely graphic “skeletons” vie with more demurely understated yet distinctive versions.

Omega, the big comeback during the 50th anniversary year

Just when A. Lange & Söhne is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its new beginning, the Haute Horlogerie brand is joining Les Ambassadeurs boutique in Zurich. The most prestigious representative of German watchmaking was already present in Geneva and Lugano, but continues to gain ground and will henceforth take its place in the display windows overlooking the Bahnhofstrasse, in addition to those on the Rue du Rhône and the Via Nassa. This will provide an opportunity to become acquainted with the exceptional cocktail composing A. Lange & Söhne, which mingles the best in the realm of horological complications with the most demanding finishes in watches distinguished by their exemplary sobriety. This approach is expressed through models such as the simple and elegant three-hand manual-winding 1815; the elusive intricacies of a Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar (2) offering refined complications; as well as the exceptional Lange Zeitwerk Striking Time (1), a unique combination of a constantforce digital jumping hour with a striking mechanism sounding in passing. In all instances, the mind-set remains immutable geared towards an almost unparalleled quest for quality.

The second H to arrive in the display windows of Les Ambassadeurs radiates an entirely different spirit. Hermès now features amongst the range offered by the Geneva and Zurich boutiques. Originally a harness-maker, now a well-known specialist in fine leather goods and silk accessories, the famous Parisian company long since also learnt the watchmaking trade which it has exercised with great talent for over a century. Equipped with its own production workshops, Hermès enjoys true independence in offering watches that are unlike any others. Thus, while the Arceau is undeniably round, its case also features a gadrooned motif and asymmetrical lugs. The Heure H (5) is probably the only watch to have achieved the feat of transforming a letter of the alphabet into the shape of a case. And while the Cape Cod (6) is rectangular, it is inspired by an anchor chain. This is indeed the model that has been treated to the company’s most recent innovation in the form of a silver case. This precious metal had become obsolete because it oxidises on the wrist. Hermès now uses an exclusively owned nontarnishing alloy and which retains the cool gleam of the metal generally associated with the moon… And maybe the moon is where the owners of an Arceau Le temps suspendu actually dream of living: pressing a pushbutton suspends time by bringing the hands to a halt at an impossible hour.

Omega, Speedmaster Moonwatch “Dark Side of the Moon”

Certain adventures appear to be best attributed to fate. Others, through a certain sequence of events, might give one reason to believe in history being written in advance. Finally, that which links Omega and Les Ambassadeurs is a demonstration of the power of passion in the long term.

t must be said that Omega has a special place in the history of Les Ambassadeurs. It was in 1964, exactly 50 years ago, that Charles Bauty, the owner of Gameo, the Lausanne-based company which was at the time the distributor for Omega, along with Tissot and Audemars Piguet Switzerland, was thinking about a large project that was particularly innovative for the time. The idea was to sell watches made by the Omega brand through the network which consisted of some 200 traditional multi-brand representatives, while taking advantage of a dedicated area to present the entire collection of this powerful company, as well as distributing it in a location at the heart of a city with international status. He needed to think of an exceptional loca-

tion and found the ideal solution in the form of a famous café in Geneva called Les Ambassadeurs. This superbly positioned venue, an almost mandatory waypoint at the heart of Calvin’s city, had for 20 years been a meeting place for many diplomats working for their respective countries. Created here, the first Les Ambassadeurs boutique was to become the first mono-brand point of sale in the history of the well-known house whose logo is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. Expanding a principle The expansion of the one-of-a-kind place named Les Ambasssadeurs into a single boutique bringing together other different well-known brands under its roof took place progressively. Firstly, with the introduction of timepieces

Before becoming the benchmark multi-brand store it now is, the Les Ambassadeurs boutique in Zurich was initially the first Omega flagship store.

from companies distributed by Gameo such as Tissot and Audemars Piguet; and later, by the arrival of a wider range designed to target the needs and expectations of an international clientele attracted by the quality of presentation as well as by the dedication and skill of the staff, all trained in-house on techniques specific to watchmaking. The importance of Omega within the universe offered by Les Ambassadeurs was also emphasised when Charles Bauty, Gameo’s visionary director, started the extension of the boutique network with the 1971 opening of the boutique at 64 Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. With its futuristic architecture, the building designed by Zurich native, Paul Steger, had a seamless steel façade, seventies style windows changing colour depending on the light and was affectionately called “The Omega building” by Zurich inhabitants due to the impressive advertising sign hanging from the front of the building. Inaugurated with all due pomp at a ceremony attended by the Omega band, the building swiftly became a model in the realm of architec-

tural design. And its interior, enhanced by Joël Racine, head decorator for Les Ambassadeurs, trained at Omega and creator of the famous Uhrenzeitfenster (watch time windows) of Swiss television fame, made a great impression on generations of collectors with its unusual design. The art of balance For many years, Omega was at the very heart of the boutique universe bearing Les Ambassadeurs’ logo. Since 1995, its logo had adorned the Doors: an important reference in the realm of brand communication and the distinctive emblem of Les Ambassadeurs stores.

But things evolved, and although Sean Connery, long time James Bond on the big screen, entrusted his watch to Les Ambassadeurs’ after-sales service during the 1970s, the House of Omega which has now become official supplier to that most famous of Her Majesty’s secret agents, was to leave the portfolio of brands offered by the boutiques. However, in the watchmaking world nothing is ever cast in stone and this powerful Manufacture, with its rich, extensive collection, is today returning to Les Ambassadeurs in the very year of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The wheel has thus come full circle.
