It all started in a nondescript workshop in one of Berlin’s back buildings but today, Siemens is a truly global firm. Not many organizations can boast the long and enriching journey we’ve had. We have witnessed many challenges and successes over 160 years of operations, and the lessons we have learnt are certain to keep us in good stead for the coming years. We were founded upon the principle of harnessing the power of technology for the benefit of mankind and the planet. Profit has not been our only motive. In hindsight, it’s easy to understand why we’ve experienced the success we’ve had - companies that go beyond the narrow vision of its area of expertise can thrive in an ever-changing and increasingly aware world. Stakeholders, including our customers, prefer to be associated with corporations that take a broader perspective and seize the initiative to contribute to the betterment of society-at-large. Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship, which have become
buzz-words of late, were present in the vision and ethos of Werner von Siemens – our founder – right from the very beginning. Today, the human race faces mammoth challenges on every front. To face these, Siemens has introduced breakthrough solutions that are saving and changing millions of live around the world, and making sure to minimize any damage done to the planet. This constant pursuit of increasingly effective solutions has given us a technological advantage. Siemens’ Sustainability Program is a comprehensive and structured effort to tackle upcoming challenges and also contribute to society and humankind. Siemens Middle East has embraced the program in full spirit. Already the results are there to be seen and felt. As always we’ll be there at the forefront when in comes to making a difference.

Sustainability Program Middle East Siemens launched its Sustainability Program in the Middle East in 2010. The key objective of this program is to be a leader in local shared-value creation and to be a preferred partner in sustainability. Middle East countries have some of the fastest growing populations worldwide, leading to high growth and demand in urban areas. Huge investments are needed in infrastructure, especially in the generation of potable water. This will be one of the biggest challenges, followed by the increased demand for healthcare and education.
The demand for energy will also rise, resulting in increased emissions which, in turn, increase the carbon footprint and contribute to global warming. These developments pose huge future challenges that need innovative answers now. The fast pace of globalization, which creates additional external challenges, also provides opportunities to attract investment attention to this region, especially around huge oil & gas reserves which are the mainstay of the economies in the region.
To help ensure a sound environment for our business, we embrace Corporate Social Responsibility as part of our activities. For this, we base our efforts on the principles of sustainability and enabling people to help themselves. Our technical expertise and innovative solutions help establish and reinforce lasting, viable structures. To have an overview about how we create local shared value, we have listed for you the past and ongoing Corporate Citizenship activities:

In fact, energy savings of up to 70 percent can be realized compared to conventional systems.
Concentrated Solar Power Siemens offers one of the largest portfolios for the fast-growing solar thermal market. Siemens can supply around 70 percent of the components for a solar thermal power plant from a single source. An annual double-digit market growth is expected through 2020.
Energy-efficient diagnostics For medical products, energy consumption at the customer level accounts for over three quarters of the products’ environmental impact. Utilizing a more efficient system like Siemens’ MAGNETOM ESSENZA, a powerful yet affordable MRI system, reduces energy consumption by up to 50 percent compared to conventional MR systems.

Water from a new desalination plant on the east coast of the UAE is pumped to the top of the Fujairah mountain range using 9 pump sets. 230 MIGD water then flows through 3 x 1600 mm pipelines from Fujairah to Sweihan serving the population along the 200 km route.
Environmental value • Through the most advanced Flue Gas Desulfurization system, flue gases are cleaned of harmful sulphur dioxide by processing it with 24m of seawater per second • Cleanest steam power plant in Saudi Arabia
Environmental value • The flow of water at 40 bar is achieved through gravity using the natural height of Fujairah mountains and avoiding the usage of energy consuming pump stations. • The water is used to supply several villages, the town of Sweihan and the irrigation of farms in the desert region.
Customer value • More electricity from less fuel • Better efficiency along the conversion chain saves money and protects the environment
Customer value • Most efficient and economical water transmission solution • Low operating costs due to gravity flow • High flexibility and availability
