STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?) I intend to make a series of images based on Ancient Greek mythology. The images will be a modern interpretation of Greek mythology, perhaps reimagined God characters or myths, or just more of a modern style used to communicate the original stories/ characters. The images will have to work within the context of publishing and book design, which I believe will be appropriate as there is scope for book covers, spot illustrations, title pages, extra promotional stuff such as posters or a box that could hold a set of books, also maybe even editorial illustration for magazine articles. Though I am pretty sure I will be going down the route of books rather than editorial. I have chosen to do this as I was prompted that Greek Myths are usually depicted a certain way and now brought up to date or in a modern style – even modern depictions in art and cinema show the Gods and various other characters in more of a ‘traditional’ style – based off the artwork on Ancient Greek pots of statues and wearing togas. While researching the Gods I also found most of the drawings favour a ‘traditional’ aesthetic, and there didn’t openly seem to be a lot of modern art based on Greek Mythology that wasn’t just fan art from DeviantArt (I’m sure there is, just not featured immediately on google). Books on Greek Mythology tend to use images of statues and classical painting. Personally I find Greek mythology a very interesting subject and I think since there doesn’t appear to be a lot of modern imagery based on it there could be a gap in the market for it, especially appealing to teenagers and young adults, I definitely think it would be engaging to have something new and fresh to show something so old.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES: Greek Mythology

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: Gods,

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs. SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Publishing and Book Design AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: The audience for my work I believe would be teenagers to young adults (in the 16 – 30 range) as I feel like they are the demographic who would be interested in seeing modern interpretations of Greek mythology. Of course I could have gone for a much younger audience but sometimes my work can be not so child friendly, as can Greek mythology – so I would rather keep the audience for this above 16. PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: In the context of book distribution, a book on Greek mythology could be sold in any major bookstore such as waterstones or online equivalents such as amazon. Potentially it could also be sold in specialist art stores such as Colours May Vary if the book was mostly art based.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: John Rocco – (Illustrator for the Percy Jackson series, I guess the Percy Jackson series itself would also be a contextual reference as it is a modern fictional story based on greek mythology and with modern adaptations of Gods and tales) Sarah Fanelli – (Mythological Monsters of Ancient Greece) Disney – (Hercules – character design) Jacqui Oakley The Cohen Brothers – O Brother Where art Thou? (A film adaptation of The Odyssey) Alison Woodward Joe McLaren Camille Rose Garcia Jenna Whyte Yusuke Oono – 360 degree books

CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

I definitely intend to do more development in print, as in the last module I grew to actually like lino printing I would like to attempt some more ambitious lino prints. As well as working with materials I know, like paint I would like to branch out onto things that usually infuriate me – like papercut as I feel like there is a lot of scope for experimentation in this project and I do not want to hold myself back. Although I am usure I will make a book I feel as if this could be an opportunity to learn about bookbinding – the concept of making a non-standard book definitely intrigues me but at this current moment I do not think my project will lead me this way – but there’s nothing to stop a bit of experimentation. I think that creating patterns is something I would like to look at – should it be appropriate for this project.

KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites

Eyewitness Companions: Mythology – Philip Wilkinson & Neil Philip Mythology of Greece and Rome: Myths and Legends of the Classical world – Arthur Cotterell Greek Gods & Heroes – Ann Birchall & P. E. Corbett Websites http://www.theoi.com http://www.windows2universe.org/mythology/planets/planets.html (this website is not the greatest but I love it)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

I’m interested at still pursuing character but in the context of book design but I believe there is scope for doing more stuff outside of character which could end up more exciting!
