STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name

Amber Kaplan

Date

JAN 2017

Blog Address a-kaplan1417.blogspot.co.uk

Rationale ORIGINAL // October 2016 // I want to improve my technical skills in print processes, I need to practice the print processes I want to improve in - for me this is lino and monoprint (though I am also interested in screenprint). I also want to continue doing papercut and mixed media pieces and exploring new ways to communicate the tone of voice I am developing. I need to find out more about packaging and branding as I am somewhat interested in creating illustration for packaging - particularly for indie brands, and I have an interest in makeup. So maybe makeup packaging. I want to try it that's for sure. I don't want to overcomplicate any of my briefs, or do something I'm not particularly interested in to jump through hoops, as I will make something I am unhappy with and I want to make good art. This was my downfall last year. Simple ideas can be good. UPDATED // JANUARY 2017 // My tone of voice has developed since my original statement of intent. I still want to improve my technical skills in print processes, though not necessarily just print. Using print processes as a technique as part of my work, to edit digitally, collage, create texture etc, as I am finding that my work is most successful when I am using a mixture of media. Continue development with papercut within the monstergirls one a week brief. Time Management is key – I have hit deadlines but fallen behind with my one a week brief, I need to get back on it. THOROUGH RESEARCH OF: Techniques, artists, media, stuff I want to do, stuff that inspires me, relevant research for projects (Music, film etc)

Themes / Subjects ORIGINAL // OCTOBER 2016// Spooky Stuff Monsters etc Pagan Holidays Music / Live Events / CD's / Album Art Books Adult fiction / fantasy / not childrens books / not editorial work

Feminism / LGBTQ Branding / Packaging Makeup, Alcohol, Various Products, DVD Box sets Limited edition Films, Music, Book packages etc. Pattern UPDATED // JANUARY 2017 // This is all pretty much the same. Themes still fun pop culture, music, film, etc. I am still deeply not interested in doing editorial work or children’s books. I’m interested in perhaps looking at more ‘serious’ issues. I had some work in an exhibition about Sex Work and it was definitely interesting to transfer my developing style onto something more serious/ informative / real than the fantasy pop culture stuff I also enjoy doing (and want to do more of)

Products / Methods of Distribution

ORIGINAL // OCTOBER 2016// Branding / Packaging Makeup, Alcohol, Various Products, DVD Box sets Limited edition Films, Music, Book packages etc. Posters Packaging design for products Makeup, CD booklets, DVD Box Sets. Novelty limited edition stuff that has illustration on it for some reason or other UPDATED // JANUARY 2017// Not much has changed in products / Methods of distribution. I have made a couple of pieces in exhibitions including some work that sold for a charity so as well as all of the above I may consider more charity / awareness stuff (particularly in the wake of Trump and Brexit) . I feel like I definitely could be doing stuff to help the LGBT / Feminist communities. Practical Skills / Media / Formats

ORIGINAL // OCTOBER 2016// Collage / papercut Mixed media Traditional and Digital used together Experimenting with different ways of using media to create a consistent tone of voice without using the same techniques over and over again or making the same work UPDATES // JANUARY 2017// Still the same practical skills. Been exploring papercut and digital quite a lot, I want to dedicate more time on developing print skills. Brief 1:

ONE- A- WEEK MONSTER GIRLS Rationale:

Deadline

MAY 2017

One- a- week monster girl drawing. Part of each image must include some element of papercut so I can develop my skills in this area. Should be done in a day (or equivalent to less than 3

hours – as papercut can be time consuming). Also helps me develop characters (even though I’m trash at narrative) Brief 2:

BUFFY BOX SET DESIGN

Deadline

MAY 2017

Rationale:

Creating a body of work based around Buffy The Vampire Slayer that could potentially be the basis for a hypothetical ‘limited edition 20 year anniversary’ box set of the show. This project has potential for doing bits of pattern and also learning more about packaging. Pop culture is a big old thing for me and I want to see how my practice could fit into that world. Brief 3: OUT OF ORDER EXHIBITION @ COLOURS MAY VARY

Deadline

FEB 2017

Rationale:

Pretty quick turnaround. A print, publication or piece of work inspired by the phrase ‘out of order’. Brief 4:

Deadline

SECRET 7 STYLE THING

APRIL 2017

Rationale:

Tying into personal interests in music. A selection of songs that I like; create a cover appropriate for the song. To expand this, a lyric sheet may also be appropriate though I have found ‘type’ is not my strong suit so nothing fancy. Brief 5:

Deadline

F M P??? Rationale:

I’m considering makeup packaging / branding / advertising / designing for it. Maybe use the d&ad brief as a starting point ?
