You may (or may not) have noticed that last July we didn’t have our usual issue of Marriage & Bliss. Bridal Beauty How to Colour Pop

By Sarah Sookraj

T

HE current makeup trends reflect fresh bursts of colour and are slowly making their way from the catwalks to the wedding aisle. Modern brides who love these vibrant hues are sometimes unsure of how best to incorporate these pops of colour into their wedding day makeup. Adding too much or too little colour can ruin the look, knowing where to add and how much can make the world of difference. Here are a few ideas to help you get the balance right:

Vibrant Lips Swiping on a fun shade of lipstick is one way to definitely include some colour in your wedding makeup. Shades of pinks, mauves, peaches and plums work best and suit all skin tones. Try to avoid experimental colors like purple and blue. If you decide on going with a shade on the brighter side, like fuchsia or tangerine, opt for a sheer formula so that it doesn’t overpower the entire face. Its also advisable to keep the rest of the face toned down so that there is nothing competing with the lip colour.

6

Marriage

&

Bliss

Bright eyes Adding colour to the eyes can help brighten your overall appearance. The key is to keep it subtle. Going overboard with loud hues can easily turn the look

from bridal to carnival. Instead keep the eyes fairly neutral and try adding a hint of colour along the outer edges or even the lower lashline. This adds just enough to be noticed but still looks appropriate for the occasion. Keep the rest of the makeup in soft hues that complement the colour you choose. Another important factor when considering colorful bridal make up is to keep things balanced. There should always be one focal point to the face; if eyes or lips are bold then remaining features should compliment not contrast. Heavy or trendy applications can easily date your look to a certain era. Remember, bridal makeup should always be timeless. The key here is moderation. Wedding Etiquette for having an ‘Adult Only’ Wedding

By Carla Mendez-Ambris

B

RIDES and grooms to be, admit it, how many of you would like to have a ‘No Kids Allowed’ rule at your wedding but do not know how to approach such a touchy issue or if it is in good taste to do so? Martha Stewart says “it is appropriate to not invite children, especially if the wedding is in the evening or is very formal.” So how do you express to your guests that children are not allowed? Simple just state it - No children allowed/ No children under the age of 12 (or whatever is your cutoff age). Get straight to the point on your invitation and make your restrictions clear. Invitation etiquette suggests that if you are inviting a child/children, the envelope should have the parents’ names “and family” or the child(ren)’s name(s) listed - unless, of course, the child is over 18, in which case, he or she should receive a separate invitation. As such, if Mr. & Mrs. Mendez have kids but the invitation is only addressed to “Mr. & Mrs. Mendez” this should be their first indicator that their kids are not invited. However, we know that some people

may not be familiar with invitation etiquette or simply pay no attention to it. So the next step would be to give the guests who have children a call personally, after the invitations have been sent out and explain to them that the wedding is an ‘adult only’ event. The sooner the better to make this dreaded call, as it should be before your guest calls to RSVP for his contingent of 5 and you then have to break the news that only him and his spouse are invited.

Also, earlier forewarning would allow guests to make appropriate babysitting arrangements. Remember you must set a standard across the board, as you cannot invite xsome children and not others, to avoid your guests from thinking “why wasn’t our child invited?” Exceptions to the rule are of course, if the kids are part of the bridal party or are your immediate family member. But many may ask, why do people want to implement such a rule in the first place? continues on page 11

continued from page 8 The most obvious reason will be their behavior. While some children are well behaved others find it difficult to sit still in their seats for a few minutes, let alone a few hours. They will get restless and cranky and may want to run around and possibly destroy items that you will be responsible for. They can also be noisy and a distraction to the program. Another reason is the additional cost. As most would know, the key to managing your wedding budget is managing your guest list; the higher the numbers, the higher your costs. Each child would require his/ her own seat (depending on age), and would also need to be accounted for to the caterer. However, to those of you who will not mind having young ones at your big day, here are

and do fun activities. Download our Kids Activity Pack online which has wedding related colouring pictures and fun wedding activities • Have a kids table, prefer- at www.ambermediatt.com/ ably at the back of the room, weddingblog. Have older teenwhere all kids can sit together agers or a young adult, manage the younger ones and ensure that everything remains under control to not disrupt the proceedings of the wedding. This will be more appropriate for kids over age 5. some things you can consider to keep them out of trouble or to make the day more fun for them.

• Give children a role at the reception by handing out programmes, walking around with the guest book or even handing out wedding tokens with the bride and groom to keep them occupied. • Arrange a sitter. Contact a reliable childcare provider who can watch the kids in another room and do various activities like watch movies, do arts and craft or play board games while the wedding is going on. That way, the parents can enjoy the wedding and the kids can have fun with other children and will not be too bored waiting for

the wedding to be over. • Prepare a Kids’ goodie bag with various items for them to use throughout the day such as crayons, play doh or puzzles.

Things to consider: Overseas guests Do not forget about your family or friends who may be coming from abroad to be a part of your special day. They may probably want to make a family vacation out of it. In this case it might be difficult to ask them to travel for a few days without their kids. New mothers To ask a new mom to be away from her baby for more than half of the day would be difficult especially if the baby is still nursing.

ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SHOOT Practising for your special day we have lots of creative ideas for great photos there are couples that also have their own fun ideas and nothing is wrong with that.

By Kenroy Ambris Amber Media Productions

O

ver the years the request for engagement photo shoots has increased tremendously. An average of 2 out of every 3 of our couples have been asking us for photos to display at their wedding and not just the amateur “selfies” and camera phone pictures - but professionally done and fun photos. So what exactly is an engagement or pre-wedding photo shoot, and what can be done with the pictures after? We normally take couples to a scenic area to get fun and romantic photos using our creative ideas. Do not

14

Marriage

Bliss

Doing an engagement photo shoot will also allow you to see your photographer in action and you can determine from this first interaction whether you are comfortable working with him or her. Does he make you laugh to lighten the mood? Does she take adventurous photos, if that is what you like? Once you establish that trust in your photographer before your wedding, you can be rest assured that on your big day, you will be in good hands. worry about how to pose or what to do, it’s our job to prompt you for poses and position you in the best possible way. Although

So, what can you do with these photos? The possibilities are endless in finding ways to use your photos from your engagement shoot.

Some suggestions include: • Wedding Invitations/ Save the Dates (if shoot is done way in advance) • Programmes • Centrepieces/ Place Cards • Wedding Favours • Wedding Slideshow (which can be shown at reception on a large screen) • Wedding Guest Signature Frame • Wedding Website • Cake Topper • Life Size Banner or Standee • And of course, on your favourite Social Network There are lots of places around the country where couples go for photos but the most famous spots are: • North, Botanical Gardens, Port of Spain • East, Millennium Golf Course, Trincity • Central, Brechin Castle (Golf Course), Couva • South, San Fernando Hill and Palmiste Park • Tobago has many places but we prefer Pigeon Point Beach Facility.

Handy Tip

Brides, make the most of your engagement shoot. Try to synchronize your photo shoot the same day with your makeup & hair trial. That way you will not only look your best but this will also be helpful in making you comfortable with the way your makeup looks in photographs before your wedding day.

Movie Review Think like a MAN Too

T

he much-anticipated sequel to Think Like a Man, inspired by Steve Harvey’s best selling book, was finally released in June 2014. In Think Like a Man Too, we see the couples come together in Las Vegas, for the wedding of Candice (Regina Hall) & Michael (Terrence Jenkins). Determined to make the night before the wedding an eventful and memorable one, the Maid of Honour, Lauren (Taraji Henson) and Best Man, Cedric (Kevin Hart) respectively plan a Bachelorette and Bachelor Party for their friends. A key element of humour is the constant interference of Loretta (Jenifer Lewis) in the wedding planning as she finds it difficult to allow her son to marry Candice, who she thinks is not good enough for her only child. We all know that mothers want the best for their children and it makes it difficult for husbands/future husbands to choose between his wife and his mother (or parents). To those couples in similar situations, remember that compromise is key. Talk it out together as a couple and discuss your concerns with your in laws and let them know that as a couple you must be allowed to make certain decisions on your own. Other marital issues among the other couples such as trust, commitment and children are also brought up during the eventful trip. Think Like a Man Too features the same line up from its prequel including Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Romany Malco, Gabrielle Union, Wendy Williams and new actors including La La Anthony Dennis Haysbert & Drake. Stay Home

Parenting Exploring the option By Phoebe Ram

N

OT so long ago, most young parents never had the problem of who to leave baby with! There was always, a grandmother, big sister, aunt or even neighbour to take care of your new born or toddler while you went to work. But with the demands of fast paced modern living, the option has disappeared like cloth diapers and their plastic pants covering. For many couples the only choice is day care. But more and more some families have decided to go for the stay at home option, for at least one parent to bring up baby. In her book Being There: The Benefits of a Stay-At-Home Parent Dr Isabelle Fox explains that some moms and dads have chosen parenthood over profession and by doing so have made a “valuable investment in the future of their child, their

26

Marriage

&

Bliss

family, and society”. Dr Fox says in day care there is ‘discontinuity of care’ explaining that caregivers often change frequently. This she adds can have negative results as it can affect your child’s “ability to relate to others, to learn, to develop an optimistic approach to life, and even to abide by the rules of society.”

“My day would start at six and end after 11 at night. As if that wasn’t enough, my bosses wanted me to start working on Saturdays. This started taking a toll on me and was becoming very stressful. So after three years of doing this I seriously took a leap of faith and decided to quit,” she recalls.

And locally more and more parents are reverting to traditional ways of child rearing. Denique Assam-Meighoo is one such mother. Seven years ago AssamMeighoo left her job to take care of her son. She worked in the company for 16 years but found juggling job and baby impossible because of the high demands of her work and the long hours.

After the first time leaving her job, Assam-Meighoo remembers becoming bored. This time, Assam-Meighoo, 42, realized that being a stay at home parent did not mean she had to be bored or lonely. “I missed interacting with people, so I decided to start a part-time events only business, so I can still be available to the kids and husband, but also generate income,” she said.

She felt that she would be better able to care for her son without the added demands on her time. Four years later, she returned to the world of work. And after just one year in the job she decided to do the same again when she had a second child, this time a daughter.

Another mother, Nadine Modeste, had such an experience. Modeste, 35, decided to become a stay at home parent when her daughter was in Standard 4. She remembers: “SEA is a very stressful time.

It was stressful for my daughter and it was stressful for me too. And I realized, sometimes you have to make sacrifices for your children so they can have better.” However, the adjustment from fulltime career to full-time parenting can be difficult. While having no regrets about leaving her job, Modeste said that it was hard for her knowing that everyone else was now ahead of her academically. “Everyone is out there making themselves more marketable and I felt like I was at a disadvantage,” she said. However, after two and half years as a stay at home parent, Modeste successfully returned to the world of work. A serious consideration and possible hindrance to being a stay at home parent is finances. For some, having a parent stay at home is a more cost-effective than paying for day care services, but will require careful budgeting and adjustments. Support from family and friends are essential.

Modeste said that she had the financial support of her children’s father. “It was a comfort for him to know that I was there for them,” she said. Modeste stressed the need for emotional support from family. Knowing that her own mother had always been available to help her was a positive factor in her having the confidence to make that significant step. She adds that the decision to be a stay at home parent is up to the individual and only that person would know their circumstances.

Public perceptions of stay at home parents are not always favourable. Modeste recalls overhearing derogatory remarks from acquaintances but that did not deter her choice. She said “you just have to remember that sometimes people don’t know or understand your situation… If you don’t spend time with your children, no one else will.” Commenting on public perceptions, AssamMeighoo said, “They think you are lucky or rich and think it’s easy. Being a stay at home parent is not as easy as people think it to be. It’s just as a though you’re working a full time job.” Despite these perceptions, many are enjoying being stay at home parents. Modeste recalls that being a stay at home parent helped pave the way for open communication between herself and her children. “Spending time with my children is the ultimate thing. I got to know their personalities and got to know them.” she says. Assam-Meighoo has also experienced the benefits of being a stay at home parent. “I no longer feel stressed, under pressure or feel as though my day is running out of time! I believe that I am now [able] to be the best mother, best wife anyone could ask for. My kids and husband appreciate all that I do for them and just having me around matters a lot to them,” she said.

HE Bridal Shower, a night of fun where the maid of honour and the bridal party take the bride to be for one night of fun before her big day. So to the Maids of Honour out there frantically thinking of what to do for the shower, get your mardi gras beads, feather boas and take note of some fun games for the night.

1

What’s the Bride Wearing? What you will need: Paper & Pens for all guests

About 20 minutes into the bridal shower, test your guests’ observation skills with this fun little game. Without letting on that they’ll be tested later, begin the party as planned. Then, once everyone has had a chance to greet the bride and is just getting settled into the party, have the bride leave the room. Give each guest a piece of paper and pencil and have them write down everything they can possibly remember about what the bride is wearing, listing as many details as possible (including accessories). Bring the bride back in and have each person read his or her neighbour’s list out loud. The guest that accurately lists the most items wins!

2

Scavenger Hunt What you will need: Items for the scavenger hunt

Break the ladies up into teams and give them a list of things that they need to bring back by the end of the party. Create

a list of standard items you might have in your purse — start with the basics (a lipstick, credit cards, keys) and work your way up to more random or risqué objects (condoms, birth control pills). The team with the most items wins.

3

I Have Never… What you will need: A drink for each participant

This drinking game works a treat at bachelorette parties to get the conversation flowing! Each girl gets to complete the sentence, “I have never…” with something that they have never personally done. Whoever has actually done what the girl said must take a sip of their drink.

4

Who Am I? What you will need: Post it Note, Pen

A classic party game to break the ice. Have each person write the name of a celebrity on a post it note (someone Marriage

&

Bliss

29

should include ‘the groom’ too for fun!) pop them upside down on a table, so nobody can see the names, then one by one, each girl should pick out a post it note and, without looking at it, stick it onto their forehead. Then they have 20 ‘yes or no’ questions to try and guess who they are. For example: Am I male? Am I under 30? Am I a singer? For each wrong guess they have to take a sip of their drink!

5

Caught in the Middle What you will need: A Brown Paper Bag, Various Objects

In any other situation, getting caught with blindfolds and paper bags might be a risqué predicament. With this game, it’s just good, clean fun. Have everybody sit in a circle. Grab several brown lunch bags and put something in each one (e.g. makeup, baby food, clothing items). Start some music and pass a bag around. When the music stops, the person with the bag must go to the center along with the person who handed the bag over. Both are blindfolded before the contents of the bag are revealed. The guest with the bag must do something to the other person with the object (e.g. feed him or her baby food, put the lipstick on). This gets especially hilarious when neither has an idea of what the object is!

6

Bridal Pictionary What you will need: Wedding Clues, White Board, Dry Erase Markers

In a bowl, place slips of paper that have different weddingrelated sayings on them (“tossing the bouquet,” “going to the ceremony,” “always a bridesmaid” and so on). Divide the group into two teams. The nominated artist takes a piece of paper from the bowl and sketches clues (using dry erase markers) for the saying on a white board. There is a 60-second time limit. If the first team can’t guess it right, the other team gets a shot. The winning team is the first to guess 10 sayings.

7

The Wedding Night What you will need: Pens and Paper

This one is particularly fun. As the brideto-be unwraps the shower gifts, quietly write down everything she says, about the gifts, like “this is so pretty” and “where can I put this” and so on. When she is done announce “this is what the bride will say on her wedding night” and read the list out loud!

8

How Well Does the Bride Know the Groom? What you will need: Pens, paper, answers from the groom

Before the shower, ask the groom about 15-20

30

Marriage

&

Bliss

questions about himself, his childhood, experiences and stuff like that. Some suggested questions include, “What was his first best friend’s name?” and “What is his favourite movie?” Give each guest a list of the questions and have them write whether they think the bride-to-be knows the answer. Then let the bride answer the questions and the person who has the most right guesses win.

9

Wedding Necessities What you will need: Pen and Paper, list of wedding items, play doh

Make up a list of wedding necessities such as champagne, candles, corsages, bouquets and so on. Split up the guests and give each team 2-3 small containers of play doh. Each team must shape a wedding item from the list in 1-2 minutes. You will end up with a wide variety of very colourful and silly looking objects! The bride-to-be picks the winning creation.

10

Wedding ABCs What you will need: Paper, pens

Have everyone write letters A-Z with each letter on a separate line on a sheet of paper. Give everyone a set time (five minutes should be good) to come up with a list of wedding related words. The words MUST be related to weddings (e.g. A - aisle, B-bouquet etc.) When the

time is finished, let everyone tally points to see who got the most amount of words.

11

Post It Note Memory Game What you will need: Post it Notes, Pen Give everyone a post-it note and pen. Each one writes down a sweet / funny / drunken / embarrassing memory they have of the bride. When everyone is done, place all the post-it notes on a wall or table for the bride to read one by one. As she reads them out she has to guess who wrote it and explain the story to the rest of the group. The lovely thing about this game is that all the post it notes can be kept and put in a book or album as a sweet keepsake for the bride.

he strange keeps getting stranger here at Marriage & Bliss so here’s your usual serving of all that is wedding weird.

• According to Greek culture brides should tuck a sugar cube into your glove — the sugar will sweeten your union. Hopefully the ants wont also join. • The English believe a spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. I wonder what Anansi thinks. • Move aside Sunday! In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the “best day” to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. • Ever wonder why the groom carries the bride. Well it’s to bravely her from evil spirits lurking below.

• Saturday is the unluckiest wedding day, according to English folklore. Funny – it’s the most popular day of the week to marry! • If ever your best man is a butcher, consider this, the Ancient Romans studied pig entrails to determine the luckiest time to marry. • We all know April showers bring May flowers. But do you know that rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck according to Hindu tradition! • Now I can see many, many friends and relative lining up for this one. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day. Ouch! • It looks lovely and some have even made a profession out of it but henna is more than just cosmetic in some places. In the Middle East brides paint henna on their hands and feet to protect themselves from the evil eye. Sure beats a blue bottle around your neck for maljo. • Peas are thrown at Czech newlyweds in-

stead of rice. Hope its not hard pigeon peas! • A Swedish bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe to ensure that she’ll never do without. Pays to have rich parents! • A Finnish bride traditionally went doorto-door collecting gifts in a pillowcase, accompanied by an older married man who represented long marriage. • Moroccan women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding ceremony. • In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds’ home as a symbol of fertility and luck. Wonder what happens if they split up?
