Aug. 2-5 During Fisherman’s Picnic in Grand Marais, Aug. 2-5, the downtown is filled with visitors, vendors, “crazy daze sales” and daily activities and contests. There’s also a parade, fireworks, live music, outdoor dances, rides for kids and much more over the weekend. The Grand Marais Lions Club, which sponsors the event, holds a raffle, which includes a grand prize of $10,000 and lots of other prizes. The Big Fish contest at Buck’s Hardware Hank offers prizes in six fish species categories, but you must be weighed in by closing at noon on Aug. 6. There’s more fun competition with Hoopin’ in the Harbor, plus tennis and softball tournaments and a trail run. Citizen and Senior of the Year will also be announced, thanks to the Grand Marais Lionesses Club. Bayfront Jam Festival Aug. 4-5 The first annual Bayfront Jam Festival in Duluth brings two days of great music on the lake. Free sidewalk drawing technique and tips will be demonstrated Friday, Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. by artist Mort McBain from the extremely successful Wausau Chalkfest events. Aug. 18 There are lots of things happening during John Schroeder Day at the Cross River Heritage Center. It starts off with a Schroeder Fire Department Pankcake Breakfast at the Schroeder Town Hall at 8 a.m. At 10:30 p.m., Skip Lamb will give a tour of historic Schroeder followed by a sawmill tour with Tony and Deonn Cicak at 11:30 a.m. They will also give the sawmill tour at 1:30 p.m. The movie, “Long White Boards” will be screened at the Heirtage Center at noon and at 2 p.m. Other activities at the center include handcraft vendors and books sales, and the Zoar Lutheran Church’s hot dog and brat stand, to name a few. Grand Marais Ready to be Trampled By Shawn Perich In September, Grand Marais is gonna get trampled— Trampled by Turtles, that is. The national radio program Mountain Stage is returning to record two live shows in the big tent by the harbor Sept. 13-14 as part of the annual Unplugged festivities at the North House Folk School. 6 North Shore HWy 61 august 2012

and Rich Moore, a husband and wife duo, will also play, as will award-winning songwriter Gretchen Peters. Another songwriter is on the bill, too.
The two shows will be distinctly different. On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Duluth bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles will headline the evening. The Turtles have gained considerable national acclaim in the past year, with television appearances on evening talk shows. Also appearing that night will be another Duluth group, Low. The band is known for a music style some call “slowcore rock” and has been recording since 1993. They, too, have achieved national recognition.
“Chip Taylor may not be a household name, but his songs are,” said Harris.
At press time, Harris said Mountain Stage was still working on rounding out the evening’s bill of performers. He was hoping to have at least one more Minnesota act on the bill. He also pointed out the concert will be one of the only Trampled By Turtles shows in Minnesota until the first of the year. The show on Sept. 14 will go in a different direction. Topping the bill are Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, formerly of The Byrds, the Desert Rose Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers. The pair has just released an album, At Edward’s Barn. Hillman is considered a pioneer of the country-rock genre. The Friday lineup includes folk singersongwriter Jonathan Edwards, known for his song, “Sunshine Go Away Today.” Perennial Mountain Stage performers Molly O’Brien
Taylor is known for two songs so different it is difficult to imagine they were written by the same man: “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning.” Taylor is the brother of actor Jon Voight and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie and actor James Haven. Numerous groups have recorded his songs.

Harris said Mountain Stage enjoyed their time in Grand Marais last year, which resulted in two shows broadcast nationwide. “We loved being up there and were totally taken with the place and the overall vibe,” he said. “I think it was a great thing for Grand Marais and for our show.” He says the show has avid listeners at WTIP radio in Grand Marais and KUMD radio in Duluth. At a Mountain Stage show in Bristol, Tenn. earlier this year, some folks in the audience said they had been to Grand Marais last September and planned a vacation around seeing another show. Others with a Grand Marais connection have turned up at shows as well. “We hope we’re turning on people to the North House Folk School, too,” he said.

Fisherman’s Picnic week is full of all kinds of activities, including contests of every kind, the Grand Marais Library’s used book sale, tournaments, a walk/run, a craft fair and, of course, the famous fishburger made with herring caught just outside the breakwater in Grand Marais. Fireworks are on Saturday night, the parade starts at 1 p.m. Sunday. There’s always lots of great music throughout the weekend, too. North Shore musicians who will play during the Picnic include Billy D., James Moors, Portage, Pete Kavanaugh, Max Bichel, Michael Monroe, Joe Paulik, Briand Morrison, Earth, Wind & Todd and the Shriner’s Band.

The days’ events are based at the Cross River Heritage Center. Drury Lane Books will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the end of August, but they have lots of events planned for the month, too. Stephan Wilbers, author of “A Boundary Waters History” will talk about his book at a Writers Salon at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, and Jean Miriam Larson will talk about her book, “The Superior Life” at a Writer’s Salon at 5 p.m. Aug. 25. The bookstore’s 10th Anniversary Celebration is from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. The Sivertones will play and refreshments will be served. All invited. The Johnson Heritage Post also has more than one event this month. Currently The Society of Minnesota Sculptors is exhibiting a wide variety of bronze, ceramic and stone sculptures from a number of the Society’s members. Hovland sculptors Dan and Lee Ross have work in the show as does Kate Christopher, Paula Jenson, Cynthia Markle, Duane Mickelson, Judd Nelson, Richard Poey, Miriam Seim, Linda Taylor, Kat Hitzeman. A group of Lake County painters have organized and secured a space in Two Harbors to display their work and hold occasional classes. A popular winter stop for snowmobilers, Trestle Inn is an out-of-the-way dinner destination year-round.
T
he Trestle Inn might be out in the middle of the woods somewhere between Finland and Tofte, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have lots of loyal customers. In fact, the Sue Butler, owner of award-winning the Trestle Inn. restaurant and saloon, which was built in the 1980s from 300-year-
old trestle timbers found in the nearby woods, is a favorite destination for snowmobilers all winter long, and anglers, hikers and tourists crowd into the rustic rooms in the summer. “It was my one of my favorite restaurants when I used to come up here hunting and fishing,” said Sue Butler, who bought the Trestle Inn in 2000. “That year I was up here camping at Twohey Lake with my kids. I saw the ‘For Sale’ sign. It didn’t take me long to decide to buy it.” She knew what she was doing. Butler had been “flipping burgers for about 30 years” in restaurants in the Twin Cities.
“I come from a long line of cooks,” she said. “My great grandmother was a chef. She started in England and then worked for Pillsbury’s in Minneapolis. She did catering, very detailed cooking.” When Butler took over the Trestle Inn, the business was already booming. The restaurant and saloon is built on the Tomahawk Trail, a favorite snowmobile route. “It was built by snowmobilers for snowmobilers,” Butler said. “The location is wonderful for winter. Igoe: Why did you write a book? Olson: My dad was an excellent restorer and collector of antique automobiles, and he preferred Model As. When he got older and could no longer maintain the collection … he said to me, “What vehicles would you like?” I told him, “Well, the pick-up truck.” He said, “How come that pick-up truck? It’s practically worthless. You know, I just sold one for $2,500. I just sold another one for $20,000 and you want one that you can’t get rid of for 25 bucks!” So I wrote the story then to kind of explain what that truck meant to me, for him. Igoe: So what did your mom think of all of your gallivanting?

He also wants to compete in the Yukon 460, which, of course, involves 460 miles of kayaking in cold Yukon waters. And if that weren’t enough, he’d like to compete in the Yukon 1,000 someday, too, but solo riders aren’t allowed. He chuckles, “I don’t think anyone is crazy enough to want to train with me and accompany me in a 1,000 mile race, but I would love it.”

Currently Zellner is preparing for the Missouri 340, which travels west to east across the state. This will be the second time Joe has entered this race. Last year, he placed fifth overall, competing against 119 other kayaks. It took him 44 hours, including two hours of sleep. To help Joe Zellner sustain his energy and keep hydrated he uses Hammond Nutrition drinks. He has hydration tubes attached to him so he never has to stop paddling. He drinks every 15 minutes, no matter the length of the race.
Zellner trains hard three days a week year-round. During the winter months, he uses an Ergometer, a simulated kayaking workout machine that measures the amount of work performed. Then around April or May Zellner takes his training to Lake Superior. He paddles about 50 to 70 kilometers each week. “I like to push my body, not to break it but to see what it can do. And I enjoy the rough stuff in terms of training, so I use Lake Superior. I figure anyone can paddle on flat water, but not waves,” he says.
On his non-training days, he does what he calls the putsy paddle. He paddles leisurely and explores new areas. Overall, he paddles five to seven days a week. He owns twelve kayaks, giving him quite a selection to choose from each day. Zellner loves kayaking and kayak racing for many reasons. At races, he loves the camaraderie. Often the racers will camp together and swap stories over a drink or two. He also loves to push his own boundaries and endurance. The competition and thrill of breaking new records is also a factor. He loves that each race is unique and provides different obstacles to overcome. But his biggest reason
is simple: He absolutely loves water, pushing through it, playing in it, taking inexperienced kayakers out for a paddle. When it comes to playing on the water, Zellner is definitely a pro. But even as a pro, it isn’t uncommon for him to fall into the water or tip over the kayak. He says many times he falls into the water by “doing something stupid.” On numerous occasions, he’s been knocked over by a wave. To ensure his safety, he always wears a life jacket. “I’ve fallen in lots. If you don’t fall in you don’t ever learn. Falling in allows you to learn from your mistakes and you learn how to handle the situation.”

As a result of that, he was well trained. He came back to northern Minnesota and got a job working in Superior at the shipyards, first welding, even welding underwater. Then he worked in Duluth after that, mainly for the Caterpillar Heavy Equipment distributor. He came home just enthusiastic and said, “Let’s go farther up the North Shore on these trips.”

I learned so much from that Model A, be it mechanics, how to take care of myself. I mean, I’ll be working someday and I’ll realize I learned that as a result of that truck getting me to up here or something like that. So when I wrote the book, I wanted to always include the Model A and maybe draw some conclusions at the end of what I had learned in not so obvious ways.

Thunder Bay Turns Toward Lake Superior By Jim Boyd

Something profound, and profoundly heartening, is under way in Thunder Bay, Ontario: The city is reconnecting with Lake Superior in a major, celebratory way.
The most stunning change is the new mixed-use waterfront development at the base of Red River Road in Thunder Bay. The $130 million development is called Prince Arthur’s Landing, and it is gorgeous – 35 acres of parks, trails, public art, marina facilities and modernized piers for pleasure craft. The list of included amenities is long: Arts Centre, Mariner’s Hall, water garden pavilion, children’s garden, skating rink, summer splash pad, skate board park. Spots have been cleared for developing condominiums and a hotel. Although construction is not yet underway, condominium sales are said to be brisk.
Thunder Bay long has been something of an anomaly: It occupies one of the world's most visually stunning urban settings, and yet it is, by and large, an unlovely place with its back to Superior. Great people, great food, a number of attractions worth a visit, but overall, an aesthetic jumble of blah. Partly that would appear to result from the shotgun marriage four decades ago of Port Arthur and Fort William that created Thunder Bay; with energy and resources split between two downtowns and two sets of neighborhoods, plus a declining economy, the dissipation has been severe. And partly it results from the industrial heritage of the place. Thunder Bay long has related to Lake Superior mostly as an industrial byway, its waterfront dominated by grain elevators, rail terminals, shipping docks and the inevitable detritus such uses accumulate. Lake Superior was more used (and abused) than appreciated or celebrated. That now is changing, not only in Thunder Bay but all along the On-
Most visually stunning of all the Prince Arthur’s Landing attractions is the Spirit Garden, which celebrates the aboriginal culture of the First Nations people. The garden was inspired by First Nation artist Roy Thomas, whose works are featured in a must-see retrospective through Sept. 9 at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery (http://www.theag.ca). Metal works by Thomas’ son Randy adorns the base of the Gathering Circle amphitheater at the center of the garden. The “walls” of the amphitheater are wispy, curved wooden lattice structures. The seats are large ash logs recycled from a nearby park. It is a beguiling place. Prince Arthur’s Landing is just adja-
cent to the downtown district of the old Port Arthur and would seem to signal the emergence of that area as the true center of the heretofore hopelessly bifurcated Thunder Bay. Indeed, the name Prince Arthur’s Landing is the original name for Port Arthur. Denizens of Fort William may not like it, but there does need to be one defined center for Thunder Bay, and the Port Arthur downtown is the most reasonable choice. In all, the Thunder Bay waterfront comprises 52 kilometers, of which Prince Arthur’s Landing takes in just a tiny bit. But the waterfront master plan envisions eventual redevelopment of all of it as funding from the city, province and federal governments becomes available. The resurgent Thunder Bay economy – built on health care, biomedical research, higher education and mining services – may make those funds available sooner rather than later. Just as important as the built amenities in Prince Arthur’s Landing, however, is the spirit they seek to capture. Thunder Bay promotes this embrace of the Lake Superior waterfront as “Ours to Celebrate.” That’s perfect, and it warms the cockles of your heart to see this overdue celebration gain momenThunder Bay continued on page 18 »

Tune in with Yoga Story and photos by Joan Farnam Yoga on the beach – nothing better, says Sherri Moe, who teaches yoga to a wide-range of students in Cook County. On a perfect day, warm, but not too warm, with little wind, she will meet her students on the beach stones for their weekly class. “It’s a treasure, a treat,” she said. “It changes your focus – makes you have to tune out the outside world.” The rough stones are surprisingly soft and giving under the yoga mats, she said, making it easier to assume some of the poses. And it’s an interesting experience to tune out people walking by on the beach or the cries of seagulls wheeling overhead as you focus inward on your body and your breath. She studied dance at St. Olaf College, where she met her husband, Frank, who was a football coach there. They traveled in the West, biking and hiking, and were married on Mt. The government of Canada, for example, has established the world’s largest freshwater marine sanctuary, the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, over an area of almost 4,000 square miles of lake bed, islands, shoreline and tributaries. Sanctuary status prohibits activities such as mining that might harm area ecosystems. In a sense, this push for environmental protection returns the region to its roots. Before industrialization, this area of Ontario was home to some of the best trout fishing in the world. The speckled trout, known to us as brook trout, was king. Unfortunately, industry put an end to that world class

And for every Train Wreck she makes, she donates $1 to the new recreation center in Finland to help maintain it.
The full menu includes everything from burgers to baskets as well as a good selection of dinner menus. Specials include Wild Woman Wednesdays, an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry on Fridays and and All-You-Can-Eat Ribs on Saturday.
