Wintering
at Wilderness Canoe Base By Ada Igoe On the Gunflint Trail, when the leaves fall and the snow starts flying, tourism tapers off, snowbirds head south, and a time of stillness descends. Will Tanner knows this stillness very well. He’s the camp manager at Wilderness Canoe Base on Seagull Lake, and he’s preparing to spend his second winter at the camp. From his post near the very end of the 57-mile Gunflint Trail, Tanner knows he’s not the only person spending the quiet winter months on the Trail, but he may be the only person responsible for plowing an ice road. While a few buildings and camp resources are located on the mainland, the majority are on Fishhook and Dominion Islands. Each winter, the camp plows a road across the frozen lake to the islands to make it easy to transport supplies and people.

There’s was just one little issue: “I’d never canoed before. I didn’t know a J-stroke from a C-stroke,” he said. He spent that summer quickly learning the ins and outs of wilderness canoe tripping, and he discovered that he enjoyed canoe guiding and working with kids. He spent the winter of 2010-11 at Wilderness. Last winter he devoted to working towards an environmental education certificate at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. Now he’s back in his new role as the camp manager. Wilderness is by far the busiest during summer, but the camp does host a variety of winter retreats, Tanner said. Lu-

Tanner invites community members to consider spending some time at Wilderness if they’re doing some ice fishing or winter exploring on the Gunflint Trail. He’s also looking for staff members to join him this winter. “It’s a great time to be here or using [Wilderness] as a base camp to go out to the Boundary Waters,” said Tanner. It may be quiet at Wilderness during the winter, but there’s plenty to do. Over the summer, a crew cut in a new sledding hill, and Tanner’s hoping the hill will prove a success. He plans to incorporate this new sledding into a small cross-country ski loop around the camp. The camp has sleds, cross-country skis and snowshoes available to visitors, and there’s a broomball court located underneath the suspension bridge that connects the two islands. Other favorite wintertime traditions at Wilderness include bonfires and saunas. “With winter saunas, your body feels complete electricity,” he said.
Boots of all shapes and colors have one thing in common: They keep feet warm and dry. | COURTESY OF WCB
“It’s flash heat and flash freezing.” He’s also hoping to create some sort of large storytelling book that includes a variety of Northwoodsthemed stories for groups to use during evenings in front of the fire. Although the distance to town always grows longer during winter, Tanner said he’s happy to be one
of the current winter inhabitants of Wilderness Canoe Base, a place which he notes has introduced many current Cook County residents to the community. “I’m conscious of the rich history and tradition and involvement of the people who have lived here before me,” he said.

500 Pushups? Local 10-Year-Old Sets Ambitious Goal By Steve Surbaugh
We’ve got $20 on the floor, and my 10-year-old son is cranking out pushups with a Navy SEAL in St. Louis, Mo. This is not something I ever expected to see as a parent. I watch the gigantic smile on my Will’s face and think about the wonderful journey we took to get to this place. In 2010, my cousin Scott Simpson graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Will was 8 years old and a bundle of energy. As we were sitting in the stands waiting for Vice President Biden to arrive and the ceremony to start I enticed Will to read through the program with me. It showed the graduates’ next assignments, and we talked about what they would be doing with their lives in a few days. “This group is joining the submarines,” I pointed out. “This group is going into naval aviation; this group will be joining Naval Special Warfare….” Will stopped me, “What is Naval Special Warfare?” I had no idea. This was before the Navy SEALs started appearing in the media on a regular basis. Later, my cousin filled us in that Naval Special Warfare involves the SEALS, among other things. Will was immediately intrigued and wanted to know more. So I set about learning more.

man scholar, a White House Fellow, and a Navy SEAL. Following his last combat deployment, he used his combat pay to start the non-profit The Mission Continues. Inspiring stuff, and Will loved it when I encouraged him to read it.
Pushups & Pizza
Will Surbaugh’s pushup event is Dec. 19 at North House Folk School. There will be a potluck pizza bake in North House’s wood-fired oven. To attend the event and watch Will push ‘em out, please RSVP to Steve Surbaugh at steves@boreal.org. To sponsor Will per pushup, contact Steve Surbaugh at steves@boreal.org or 218-370-9757. To learn more about The Mission Continues, go to www. missioncontinues.org.
My job entails driving a lot. I try to put that time to good use by listening to books. I was perusing the Audible. com catalog one day, and one new release caught my attention: “The Heart and the Fist: The Education of a Humanitarian and the Making of a Navy SEAL,” by Eric Greitens. Seemed like a good book to learn more about the SEALS.
The book is the story of an inspiring young man who has done humanitarian work all over the world, been a Rhodes and Tru-
The Mission Continues is a St. Louis-based non-profit which “does not offer charity, rather it challenges” post 9/11 “service members to utilize their tremendous skills and leadership to continue serving our country at home.” To date they have funded more than 500 fellowships across the country. The summer following the trip to Annapolis, my wife, Kate, and I asked Will to put together a little firewood business to pay for his downhill ski racing habit. He did pretty well and sold about $1,000 worth of firewood, more than covering the costs of his skiing. We encouraged Will to think about donating money to a charity that he felt was important to support.
He went off and thought about it. A couple of days later, he came back and said he would like to send some money to “Mr. Eric’s The Mission Continues” He sent the money, along with a letter and a picture. In return he received a personal note from Greitens.
I got to speak to Greitens over the phone and did a big research project about him and The Mission Continues. Building on his donation of last year, Will and I now are planning to raise $10,000 to fully fund a fellowship here in Minnesota. Ideally, we would love to find a post-9/11 veteran from our community who would want to apply for the fellowship, come back and serve in our community. Earlier this fall I worked with North House Folk School to register them with The Mission Continues as a host organization. Part of the fundraising plan is for Will to see how many pushups he can do in an hour. We plan on hosting that event at North House Folk School on Dec. 19. Which brings us back to Will doing pushups with Greitens…. Will and I recently traveled to St. Louis for the launch of Greitens’ new book, “The Warrior’s Heart: Becoming a Man of Compassion and Courage,” a teen version of his previous book. We spent some time at The Mission Continues meeting people and learning more about what they do. The trip culminated with Will getting up on stage at Maryville University and introducing Eric to the crowd of 500 people attending the book launch. Following the ceremony, a young former Marine asked Will how many pushups Will thought he was going to do. Will paused and said, “Maybe 500.” The young former Marine tossed down $20 and said, “Let’s see some now.” Eric smiled and said, “C’mon Will, let’s do some pushups for The Mission Continues.”
One thing led to another. As part of a class project, Will and

Electronic Records
Good for Doctors, Patients By Joan Farnam When patients see a doctor at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic these days, they can find out a lot more about their health status, thanks to electronic medical records. The system has also made a real difference for doctors and nurses in patient care as well as helped the clinic get a better handle on community health and preventative care, said Patty Doherty, an RN at the clinic who handles electronic health records support. Every patient’s paper chart at the clinic has been entered into computers with all the details of allergies, medications, lab tests and health care history. The information is well protected, she said, but immediately accessible to the medical staff when needed. “It’s really a key to patient safety,” she said. Dr. Jenny Delfs, for example, said that if

All kinds of information from the electronic charts can be organized into graphs that can help both the provider and the patient see how they’re doing, too. With a couple of clicks, graphs can be generated to show the relationship between weight loss or gain and blood sugar, for example, an important detail for diabetics. “We have a computer monitor in every exam room, and we can turn it toward the patient (it’s on a swivel arm) and show them -- here’s your world. Here’s what we’re looking at,” Doherty said. “It’s not the same as going to a doctor 50 years ago when you didn’t question. People are involved now. We want people to be involved, too. They’re the ones who can keep themselves healthy.” The clinic recognized about 10 years ago that the paper world of medical charts was disappearing -- electronic health reports were going to be the wave of the future.

there’s a drug recall, they can easily find which patients at the clinic were prescribed that medication. With paper charts, that would have been next to impossible, she said.

“It was very clear that the paper system was broken,” Delfs said. “It was hard to find things in the charts, they were getting too big. And we now have a lot more state and federal reporting to do. That process with paper charts is very labor intensive. With electronic medical records, it’s easy.” The clinic formed a network with two other clinics in Minnesota, the Scenic Rivers Health Services and Migrant Health Service Inc., to choose

an electronic medical records system that would work for their clinics. In April 2008, they went “live” and began using the system, but for the first several months “we lived in two worlds... the paper and electronic,” Doherty said. It was a tough transistion and still is a challenge for doctors. In the old days, after a patient left, doctors just dictated notes about the visit, which would be typed into each chart by clinic staff. Now, the doctors type in their own notes, and it takes a lot of time. Delfs said she really likes using the electronic health records because it gives her a great handle on how her patients are doing, but it is time consuming to type in all the information from patient visits at the end of the day. She says a typical day starts at 7 a.m. at home, where she calls up the charts of the patients she’ll be seeing that day and goes over them, making notes about things she’d like to cover during the visit, etc. “By the time you get there,
I’m ready for you,” she says. Then, after the patient leaves, the chart must be updated. She says she spends from 1-3 hours a day after-hours updating the records. “The new generation of docs have an easier time typing into a chart,” she said. “I’m as efficient as I’m going to get at this.” But the system has many positives, she said. Doctors and nurses have immediate access to a chart. In the paper days, the clinic had two full-time people finding and pulling them. The prescription refill process also is really simplified. “We don’t have to go looking for a chart now,” Delfs said. And electronic medical records help the physicians alert patients to what tests are due, as well as give them a long-term view of their health. "The new electronic system makes it easier for us to partner with our patients for their good health,” she said. “It’s made a huge difference."

Cook County Food Prices Skyrocket By Kelly Schoenfelder It’s all about supply and demand: A widespread national drought coupled with higher fuel cost is raising the price of what we eat. “Pork will be going up in the next year or two,” Pie Place operations manager Ben Zang said. “Asparagus has gone up, a lot of veggies have gone up. There isn’t really anything that’s gone down.”
Local grocers are also seeing changes. “You can hardly keep up with the change,” Johnson’s Foods owner Robin Johnson said. “There is a constant increase in the price on the retail end. I mean, I’ve been waiting for things like canned corn to go up because of the drought this summer.” In addition to the drought, the higher cost of gasoline also has an impact on food prices. “The one thing about food prices on the North Shore is that a lot of our on-the-shelf price deals with our freight,” Johnson said. “For people along the North Shore and Cook County in particular, we all share the cost of getting the food up here and on the shelves.” Business owners around Cook County have been very concerned about how this will affect

consumers. Johnson’s takes part in the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) nutrition program, which supports low-income women and children through federal grants. But with food costs rising, the gap between what a local grocer like Johnson’s can ask a WIC participant to pay and the actual cost of products
“One big thing that’s been on my mind lately is the constant increase in milk prices,” Johnson said. “There are limits as far as what a retail store can charge for WIC customers, and our cost for a gallon of milk is more than the top limit of what we can charge for milk in the WIC program.”
Local restaurants are also seeing higher milk prices. “Dairy, Oh my God, it’s ridiculous how expensive it is,” Cascade Restaurant owner Maureen O’Phelan said. “People think that restaurants, because you buy bulk, you get a special deal, and I suppose that’s true on a fair number of products, but I don’t see that on dairy.” In order to deal with the increase in prices, local businesses have had to get creative. “We used to have a New York strip on the menu, but that was just a food-cost disaster

for us,” Zang said. “T-bone steaks, New York strips—those are being replaced with more cost-effective choices.” At grocers like Johnson’s, they are looking at substitutions for certain brands or cutting back on selection. “As far as substitutions, yes, if there’s a good substitution available,” Johnson said. “Maybe we aren’t going to carry six varieties of something. Maybe we cut that back to three, to
cut back our inventory and keep our prices reasonable.” In the end, the increase in prices may change what we see on the dinner menu or the grocery store shelf. But, it’s hard to say what kind of changes those will be as the impact from last summer’s drought continues to play out. “In the industry, you have to take it moment by moment,” Zang said. “It’s a hard balance. You have to get creative.”

Moving Cook County Ahead
New Chamber, Go Team Hope to Help County's Economy By Jim Boyd Two related efforts are underway to generate momentum for the Cook County economy. One is the evolution of the Grand Marais Area Chamber of Commerce into a Cook County Chamber of Commerce. The other is a project called “Go Cook County: Creating Sustainable Prosperity for All” which involves a group of more than 20 county leaders called, appropriately enough, the “Go Team.” Both efforts proceeded from concerns that the county economy has failed over the last decade and more to generate the jobs and growth that would enable county residents, especially young adults and their children, to prosper. Scott Harrison, owner of Lutsen Resort and member of the Cook County/Grand Marais EDA board, views the expanded chamber as “creating an opportunity to gather anchor institutions – the EDA, the city, county, non-profits and private businesses – around a table to talk about common issues, flesh out our understanding and possibly devise a way forward.”
Kim Linnell, owner of Almost Home Appliance / Arrowhead Outdoor and president of the Grand Marais chamber, stresses that emergence of the countywide chamber is not a usurpation or takeover. At a meeting Nov. 14 to talk through transition issues, he said it is really “an evolution.” Several members of the existing chamber were involved from the beginning in the effort to bring that evolution about. Bev Wolke, director of the Grand Marais chamber, will continue her administrative work, but part of the time she will be working with the Cook County Visitors Bureau, which will take on many of the events that the Grand Marais chamber sponsored, such as the Christmas parade and car show. Wolke and Linnell soon will be sending endof-year letters to members of the Grand Marais chamber recommending that members sign on with the new countywide group. The Grand Marais chamber will then cease operations.
The group organizing the county chamber is now securing three-year dues pledges from prospective members. A tentative yearly budget has been set at $100,000. They are about half way to that goal and confident enough of success to begin advertising for an executive director. Very soon, the group Assisted residential housing with all will act to elect a formal the freedom they want and just board of directors. Makeup of the help they need that board has been crafted to ensure every business sector and every area of the county is represented.

The second economic-development effort, Go Cook County, includes a number of people also involved with the county chamber. But the Go Team goal is much broader: To develop a coherent economic development action plan that can win widespread public support and be embraced by the EDA, the city and the County Board, all of which have invested funds to underwrite the Go Cook County effort. The team’s work is being guided by Randy Lasky of Northspan Group, a nonprofit, Duluth-based economic development consultant. Lasky has enlisted the assistance of Josh Bergstad of the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission.
Bergstad has spent the last few months compiling a statistical analysis of the Cook County economy to inform the Go Team work. He presented some of his findings at a recent Business Networking Luncheon sponsored by Cook County Higher Education. Over the last six weeks, members of the Go Team have interviewed almost 100 county business owners and managers on their views about the county economy, its strengths and weaknesses, what they would like to see happen and barriers to that progress. Ongoing right now is a Go Team effort to solicit public views on those same issues. An online “community perception survey” has been developed. It takes about 20 minutes to complete, and county residents are encouraged to participate by going to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/76MFYCV For those without the ability to take the online survey, paper copies are available. To receive one, phone Jim Boyd at Higher Ed, 387-3411. The goal is to achieve 500 public perception surveys by Dec. 15. Following the end of the perception survey collection and analysis, the Go Team will make an intensive effort to: • Evaluate the data about the state of the county economy • Understand how county residents and the business community would like to see the economy develop. • Consider barriers to economic growth that stand between where we are and where the people of Cook County would like to see the county go. • Create a set of recommendations and action steps to overcome those barriers and to set in motion activities that can bring the preferred economic course of action to life. • Bring those recommendations and action steps to the public in one or more public forums. • Make adjustments based on the public feedback. • Present a final set of recommendations and action steps to the public, the EDA board, the County Board, the City of Grand Marais and other groups. Editor’s note: Jim Boyd has been closely involved in both the expansion of the Chamber of Commerce and the work of the Go Team. He also works as the local coordinator for Northspan on the Go Cook County project.
Tell Them What You Think The Cook County Go Team is looking for at least 500 county residents who will give half an hour of their time to help evaluate the county economy and share their views on what should happen with it. You can participate by going to the Go Team Community Perception Survey online and filling it out. You can find the survey at: www. surveymonkey.com/s/76MFYCV The Go Team is a group of about 20 individuals from around the county who have gathered together to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the county economy and develop a vision for a more prosperous future. It is funded by the County Board, the City of Grand Marais, the Cook County/Grand Marais EDA, Arrowhead Electric and others. The Go Team is being guided in its work by the nonprofit Northspan Group, a nonprofit, Duluth-based economic development consultant. The Go Team hopes to get at least 500 responses to its community perception survey by Dec. 15. When the survey results are tallied and brought together with results of the business survey, plus a comprehensive evaluation of data about the county economy–being done by the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission–the Go Team will embark on an intensive effort to distill out those economic development issues, opportunities and barriers that should be at the center of economic planning by the County Board, the EDA, the City of Grand Marais and other anchor institutions, such as the schools. If you cannot take the community perception survey online, you can pick up a hard copy of the survey at the Grand Marais Library, the county auditor’s office in the Cook County Courthouse and at Cook County Higher Education, 300 West Third Street.
