The Grand Marais annual Fisherman’s Picnic Festival is packed full with fun for the whole family. The Grand Marais Playhouse has mounted two productions for its Summer Theater Festival: “The Odd Couple (The Female Version” by Neil Simon and “Church Basement Ladies” by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehike with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen. The plays will be performed in repertory, with the “Odd Couple” on stage Aug. 2, 4, 8 & 10 and “Church Basement Ladies” Aug. 1, 3, 9 & 11. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7 p.m., Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. For tickets and more info, call 387-1284 or visit www.tix.com. The Grand Portage National Monument Rendezvous is always a great experience with workshops, presentations and contests Aug. 8-11. There’s also a re-enactor encampment on the Old Depot grounds to help you understand the Fur Trade Days. The Traditional Pow-Wow on the Grand Portage Band’s powwow ground draws hundreds of Native American dancers from the region as well as many drums. Booths featuring traditional foods as well as arts and crafts set up at the pow-wow grounds as well. Grand Entries are held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. All invited. The John Schroeder Lumberjack Day, Aug. 17, begins with a pancake breakfast at the Schroeder Town Hall from 8-10 a.m. followed by a celebration at the Cross River Heritage Center until 2 p.m. Colby Abazs will exhibit his photography and cards. Other artisans exhibiting include Lynn Anderson, Linda Morris and Jan Moran. Sandi Pillsbury-Gredzen’s painting “Waterlillies at Maxwell’s Woodland Nursery” is on exhibit in Laguna Beach, Calif.

And not to forget the Grand Marais Playhouse’ Summer Theater Festival at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts that continues through Aug. 11. Fisherman’s Picnic is certainly a high point of summer with all kinds of contests, activities and tournaments throughout the weekend. The Library Friends Used Book Sale is held

that weekend too, not to mention the best parade of the year (Sunday, 1 p.m.) There’s always lots of great music every day of the Picnic, too, and this year is no exception, said Max Bichel, who organized the entertainment. Local favorites like Michael Monroe, Pete Kavanaugh, the Portage Band, the Sivertones, Briand Morrison and Bump Blomberg & Adam Moe (Pushing Chain) will play at Harbor park throughout the event. Cook County’s Most Wanted plays for a street dance in Harbor Park on Thursday night, Aug. 1 from 8-11 p.m., and The Splinters play from 9 p.m. to midnight on Friday night. Saturday night will feature two shows. Jerry

Vandiver and The One Match Band will perform from 6:30-8:30 p.m. followed by the Step Rockets with Josh Schmidt & Friends. Jerry Vandiver hails from Nashville, Tenn., but he comes up here every year to paddle in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. He’s a well-known singer/songwriter in his hometown (His songs have been recorded by Tim McGraw and the Oak Ridge Boys, to name a few) and last year, Vandiver produced a CD about his BWCAW experiences entitled “True & Deep: Songs for the Heart of the Paddler.” The One-Match Band includes Paul Brunner (guitar), Ashley Jean (fiddle) and Roy Holdren (drums.) I was just a terrible student. Then when I went to college, I found that when I had a focus on why I was pursuing an education, then I was able to get on track. What projects are you currently working on? I just finished up two Lake Superior Project videos for WTIP. One was about the coaster brook trout hatchery at Grand Portage, and the other was about the Flute River Restoration. I also take videos of the County Board meetings. They are on the county’s website and on Boreal.TV. What about your art continues to attract and fascinate you? I think being able to spend a lot of time on an idea is what is fascinating about it. It’s like a catalyst to understanding things. It helps you focus on a subject and really take it apart. Then I try it get it on a computer so it can be shared. Where can we see your work? Grand Marais will soon be offering a whole new type of fun for the family: mini golfing among farm animals. New mini golf course owner Randy Sjogren has changed the Golf ‘n Stuff course into Putt ’N’ Pets. And while the course itself hasn’t changed any, the scenery has. Between the golf course and Highway 61 is a fenced-in barrier for live animals.

Sjogren’s answer was simple, “Mini golf has always been a passion of mine forever, and our family has always had farm animals, so the two just seem to go together naturally. It’s two areas of fun in one.” Sjogren grew up on a farm. He also raised his four kids on a hobby farm in Farmington. It included all sorts of animals — chickens, turkeys, ducks and pigs. He’s now bringing some of his fuzzy and feathered friends to work.

Unfortunately it won’t be a petting zoo for liability reasons, but Sjogren isn’t opposed to the idea in the future. He hopes to have the pets in place by Fisherman’s Picnic, if not sooner. The chickens will have their own log cabin house on the course, and the other animals will share an extensive coop that has goat towers and a swinging bridge. The coop will be multiple levels and intersect part of the course. Healthy living conditions for the animals will be provided in accordance with USDA regulations, and the animals will return home with Sjogren in the winter.

Gunflint Musicians Play Chamber Music Concert By Ada Igoe When you think of sounds of the Gunflint Trail you might think of a distant loon trill, the rustle of aspen leaves in the wind or the grunt of a bull moose. Now you can add a new sound to the list: the sound of chamber music drifting up through the tree tops. The Gunflint Trail Historical Society (GTHS) will host its first ever chamber music concert – the Gunflint Woods, Winds, and Strings Benefit Concert – on Aug. 17 to help support ongoing operations of the society. The GTHS works to preserve the history of the Gunflint Trail and the society’s chief undertaking, the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. The museum is located in the renovated Chik-Wauk Lodge on Saganaga Lake. The museum, now in its fourth season, presents the cultural and natural history of the Gunflint Trail.

The concert will showcase the talents of many familiar Gunflint Trail faces. Among the scheduled performers are Bill Beckstrand (piano), Philis Anderson (oboe), Paul Dykstra (piano), Paul Jacobson (baroque flute), Judy Ranheim (flute), Barb LaVigne (flute), Erika Ternes (soprano), and Laura Popkes, (soprano). The concert will feature compositions from Grieg, Bach, Chopin, Britten, Hoover, Rossini, and Beckstrand. “Classical chamber music in a North Woods setting is an exciting combination,” said GTHS events chairperson, Sally Valentini. “Several of our members have recruited some very talented Trail residents and guests to entertain us on a summer Saturday afternoon.” Chamber music may seem a bit incongruous with a Minnesota vacation destination frequently associated with fishing, camping and wildlife watching, but concert committee member and Gunflint Trail cabin owner Vi Nelson discovered that the Gunflint Trail is rich in classical music enthusiasts. In fact, the inspiration for the concert came about from a search for a grand piano in the area. “My friend Paul Dykstra is a concert pianist who needed a piano to practice on when he was visiting a couple years ago,” said Nelson. “That led me to Jan and Ed Wright.” The Wrights own a baby grand piano in their Gunflint Trail home and allowed Dykstra to practice on it during his visit. Through these practice sessions at Wrights’ home, Nelson connected with classical music enthusiast Susan Scherer, another Gunflint Trail resident. Together, Scherer and Nelson thought, “Wouldn’t it be fun to get all the musicians on the Trail together for a concert?” said Nelson. After proposing a chamber music concert to the GTHS board of trustees, Nelson and Scherer suddenly found themselves throwing a benefit. Concert planning coincided with the expansion of the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department fire halls, which provided the concert committee with an obvious Gunflint Trail

venue to host their concert. The Gunflint Woods, Winds, and String Benefit Concert will be held at GTVFD Fire Hall No. 1 near Poplar Lake, located on the southern side of the Gunflint Trail between Clearwater Lake Road and Hungry Jack Lake Road, about halfway up the Gunflint Trail. A “Meet the Artists” social hour will follow the concert in the new A. Paul and Carol Schaap Mid-Trail Community Center, adjacent to the fire hall. Giving Back— The Duffer Reflects on a Life Well-Lived. By Joan Farnam Duffer the Clown is beloved by everyone who sees him meandering down the street towing his little golf cart in the Fisherman’s Picnic Parade. The Duffer just makes everyone laugh and feel good. He nods and waves to friends and acquaintances and walks over to every child he sees to give them a balloon. Walt Mianowski, the man behind The Duffer’s painted face and clown suit, isn’t that different.

He recalls screaming in terror when he saw this large man come into the living room of his aunt’s house one day when he was about seven. The man was his father, whom he didn’t remember. But he made it, and as a young adult, began living the life he knew — working construction, drinking and gambling. One day, he said, when he came downstairs after a late night of partying, he overheard his aunt telling her daughter, “He’s going to turn out to be just like his old man.”

“He’s a super guy,” said Hal Greenwood, who has known him for years. “I think he is a great humanitarian.”

That casual comment changed his life. “I vowed to myself that I would be different,” Mianowski said.

Being kind to others and doing what he can to help has really been a philosophy of this civic leader, who was mayor of Grand Marais and a Cook County commissioner and been a member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years.

At the time, he was building coke ovens for the steel industry and, in 1952, was sent to Duluth to work at the U.S. Steel plant. There he met his future wife, Jane, who was teaching in Esko.

But he learned how to be kind to others the hard way.

“We met in a bar,” Mianowski said, and laughed.

“I had a tough childhood,” Mianowski said, as he talked about his life recently.

The couple fell in love and within two years were married. A few years later, they decided they really wanted a different kind of life and visited Duluth again. There, Mianowski just happened to run into a man who had been his shop steward in Duluth. He was working at Taconite Harbor and offered him a job, and the young couple soon found

He grew up in a steel town in Pennsylvania. His father wasn’t around much, he said. He was in and out of prison during Mianowski’s growing up years. At 86, The Duffer (Walt Mianowski), is probably the oldest clown in Minnesota.

He closed it in 1984. But Mianowski’s stories about his life here are really about caring for a community. He was on the City Council for seven years and then was mayor for two terms. He also was a county commissioner for two terms.

Airport Runway Project Moves Closer to Reality By Steve Surbaugh For the last five years, the Grand Marais/ Cook County Minnesota Airport Commission has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) towards completion of the airport runway. Version 4 of the BCA (Benefit Cost Analysis) project plan — which the commission hopes will be the final version — has been submitted to the FAA. If it is approved and funded, money would be available for design and construction during the 2014 construction season, said Rodney Roy, airport manager. Roy cautions, however, that the project “might be a multi-phase, multi-season project.” The current runway — 4,199 feet long by 75 feet wide — was completed in 1994. The original design called for 5,000 feet by 100 feet, but the smaller runway was built due to budgetary constraints at the time, Roy said. The 5000 by 100 feet is a standard in the aviation world, Roy said, as it allows proper space for what is called “accelerate-stop” distance for larger aircraft. This is an important safety consideration, as it allows enough room for most aircraft that would fly into our local airport to accelerate to take-off speed, recognize a problem and decelerate to stop before running out of runway, Roy said. Because the airport does not now meet this safety requirement, a large number of aircraft are either unable to or unwilling to land at the airport, Roy said. This creates two safety concerns for our community and one economic concern, Roy said. The first safety concern involves forest fires. In the event of fires in the Arrowhead region, fixed-wing fire-bomber aircraft cannot land on the current runway, Roy said. Because

of this, aircraft fighting fires in the Arrowhead must operate out of Hibbing or Ely airports. This greatly increases the time between trips, increases costs and limits the fire-fighting effectiveness of fixed-wing aircraft, Roy said. The increase in runway length and width would allow these aircraft to use the local airport and therefore be more effective fighting fires in the region. The second safety concern involves treating threats to human life. Living at the tip of the Arrowhead, we are a long way from a Level 1 Trauma Center. In the event that a medical evacuation is needed, there are three options: Ambulance by Hwy. 61 to Duluth, helicopter to Duluth or other locations with possible fuel stops, or fixed wing aircraft to Duluth, the Twin Cities, or Rochester. During any sort of inclement weather, Roy said, the current runway at the airport does not allow larger, faster fixed-wing ambulances to land safely. Fixed-wing aircraft are far and away the fastest way to deliver a patient to a Level 1 trauma facility, Roy said.

Finally, it is almost impossible to quantify the number of airplanes and people that decide not to fly into the local airport because of its non-standard size. An airport is “a transportation asset necessary to compete in our modern world,” Roy said. Just last week a party of fishermen flew into the Cook County Airport from Indiana for a multi-day fishing trip on the Gunflint Trail. “The airport is just

another avenue into Cook County, just like Hwy 61 is,” he said. John Barton, head of the Airport Commission, is excited about the return on investment from this project. A benefit-cost assessment “has determined that return on investment for the firefighting ability alone comes in at a 2.07 benefit to cost ratio. Add in the medical evacuation piece and the tourism/business

use, and the ratio moves closer to 3.” The runway completion project is a 90 -10 project, Roy said. This means that 90 percent of the dollars come from the FAA and are funded from aviation taxes. The remaining 10 percent will need to be funded locally, and the Airport Commission has been steadily setting aside money over the last several years to put towards this project.

How to Find a Fishing Hole By Shawn Perich Summer in Cook County means company. Most folks who live here entertain family and friends who are on vacation, often playing tour guide as they shuttle them to various attractions. This is easy enough if the visitors want to see the High Falls or Chik-Wauk Museum. But what if they ask you to take them fishing? Although we are surrounded by some of the best fishing in the United States, many folks who live here are occasional anglers. Some may have a seldom-used small boat, canoe or kayak. They may or may not own fishing tackle. If you fit this description, fear not when your guests pop the fishing question. You can take them fishing and have fun.

If you are absolutely clueless about fishing, hire a guide for a full or half-day outing. A number of guides operate throughout the county. You can find them via advertising and brochures placed at local businesses and bulletin boards or more simply just by asking around. Many guided fishing options are available, including fishing with kids, charter fishing on Lake Superior, fishing for trophy walleyes on the Gunflint Trail and fly-fishing in lakes or streams.

The good thing about going with a guide is they can provide the boat and tackle, as well as the know-how necessary to find and catch fish. Guides are accustomed to helping neophyte anglers and kids. Prices for guided excursions vary, largely based on the guide’s operating costs. In addition to the cost of the trip, you should tip the guide if you have a good time. Bear in mind that not even the best guide can guarantee the fish will bite. If you have enough fishing ability to head off on your own, look for fishing holes that are accessible and offer a good chance for success, which is especially important when fishing with kids or neophytes. Remember, size doesn’t matter. They’ll be happy just to be catching fish. Since there are very few waters containing sunfish or crappies, small easy-to-catch fish found here include smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and brook trout. What follows are a few fishing options.

Fishing from Shore

The best shore-fishing opportunities are generally roadside lakes, where you can find brush-free places to sit and cast. A popular destination near Grand Marais is Mink Lake, which has a small public fishing pier and is stocked with trout. Lichen Lake, along the Grade north of Lutsen, offers some shore-fishing opportunities for walleyes and other species. Sometimes

Trout Streams

Most of the rivers and creeks running into Lake Superior contain brook trout in their upper reaches. While the brookies may be small—a 12-incher is a trophy—they make up for their diminutive stature with abundance and a willingness to bite, especially in the morning and evening. They taste good, too. Be aware that the lower reaches of streams where they cross Hwy. 61 have special catchand-release regulations intended to protect Lake Superior’s native “coaster” brook trout.

Head inland for brook trout you can catch and keep. Try the Temperance, Poplar or Cascade rivers and their tributary creeks.

Small Lakes

If you have a small boat or canoe, there are innumerable lakes that are easy to reach. Some have boat ramps, while others, especially trout lakes, often have carry-down canoe paths. Small lakes are easy to navigate and locate fish. A time tested technique is to troll slowly around the shoreline using a Rapala or a spinner tipped with live bait. Elbow Lake is a popular destination by Grand Marais, as are Clara, White Pine, Crescent and Cascade north of Lutsen.

There is still work to be done in Grand Marais involving drops, the cable that typically runs from the main lines along the roads to the individual homes and businesses. There are still some drops to be installed on the West End as well. Aerial crews working on main line construction are nearing the end of their tasks on the Gunflint Trail. Underground crews have now begun burying lines on the Gunflint Trail. Aerial crews will begin working shortly in Colvill, and underground work will begin when the Gunflint is complete.
