une is always a fun month in Cook County. The summer festivals are starting up, and galleries and shops have new work by artists and artisans who have been working hard over the winter to make beautiful things. There’s a new play to see, too, “Fit to Kill” directed by Jackson Nickolay, as well as the ever-popular Summer Solstice Pageant and Wooden Boat Show. And, as always, there’s plenty of great music. First up is the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, which will perform with Flamenco dancer Colette Illarde at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. The MGQ, which has been cited by reviewers as one of the most accomplished guitar ensembles in the world, draws on a wide repertoire of Renaissance and Baroque, Spanish, Latin, American and Romantic music as well as commissioned
works. They’ve performed all over the United States. Seven years ago, they began a collaboration with Illarde, a flamenco dancer, developing productions with music by Spanish composers Joaquin Rodrigo and Enrique Granados. The performance at the ACA will feature music by the Quartet with dances from Spanish regional and folk traditions as well as classical ballet and flamenco. As an added perk, the Quartet (Joseph Hagedorn, Maja Radovanlija, Ben Gateño and Wade Oden) will teach a classical guitar master class at the Grand Marais Art Colony from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 2 ($10), and Illarde will teach a beginning flamenco dance class for all ages at the Art Colony from 1-2 p.m. that afternoon. Call 387-2916 to pre-register for the guitar class, as space is limited. No preregistration is required for the dance class. Also that weekend, North House Folk School will hold the Northern Landscapes Festival with classes, workshops, speakers and presentations May 31 through June 2. It is partnering with the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center this year, with special programs and hikes. Photographer Paul Sundberg will be the featured speaker on Saturday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. For more info and the schedule of events, see www. northhouse.org.
by Joan Farnam
The next week, June 7, the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder will hold its opening party from 6:30-8:30 p.m. All invited. A Quilt & Fiber Show with works by Nancy Hansen, Mary Brislance, Mary Jane Huggins, Coralyn Koschinska and Betsy Zavoral will be on display through June. The Heritage Center is also featuring the U.S. Forest Service exhibit “Up From the Ashes: Forest Fires on the North Shore.” It will be on display throughout the season. The Heritage Center’s gift shop features work by a number of local and regional artists including Sandy Pillsbury, Jean Knight, Ann Ward, Rose Vastilla, Al Sunde and Jensine Wing. Note: The Lundie Vacation Home Tour, a fundraiser for the Schroeder Area Historical Society, will be July 13 this year and feature homes and/or cabins in the Hovland area. For more information, call 218-663-7706. The Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Pageant is June 21-23 this year on the North House campus, with lots of wooden boat displays, speakers, workshops, craft demonstrations and more. Photographer Layne Kennedy will be among those presenting, as will Kathy Rice, who has just had her book published, “The Pie Place Cafe Cookbook, Food & Stories Seasoned by the North Shore.”
Lou Pignolet, bowl-turner Have you always lived in Cook County? My wife Inger and I both grew up near an ocean – I in New Jersey, she in Norway. When we moved to Minneapolis we discovered the lake up here – the rough, wild shore, the weather. We built a cabin on Lake Superior in Hovland in 1980 and moved up here permanently in 2005. What projects are you currently working on? Turning burls, something I really like to do. My favorites are aspen and birch burls. Lately I’ve been working on a lot of aspen burls, getting ready for the Hovland Arts Festival. What about your art continues to attract and fascinate you? That’s easy. It’s really the wood that motivates me, getting beautiful pieces of wood that I can shape to maximize that beauty. You can see faces and scenery in there, all swirling around. I’m a conduit for the beauty of the tree. Where can we see your work? My website is www. loupignoletbowls.com. I also sell at the New Scenic Cafe, from my own shop and at the Hovland Arts Festival. Email me if you want to visit my shop–pignolet@umn.edu

Pinterest by Breana Roy
Pinterest is the greatest online procrastination site so far. For many people, online social medias such as Facebook and Twitter are addicting and fun. Pinterest is no different, and I am a self-confessed pin-oholic. It is my weakness. While it’s not brand new, Pinterest is still unfamiliar to many people. Therefore a definition is probably in order. To put it easily, Pinterest is an online source for finding and organizing different tips, tricks and ideas for numerous categories, such as gardening, house décor, arts and crafts, cooking recipes, wedding ideas, animals, humor, cars and motorcycles and even tattoo and piercing ideas. Each idea is a small photo with a link at the bottom. When you find something you would like to remember and keep track of, you can “pin” it in a folder to view later. Many Pinterest users have numerous folders such as recipes to try, craft projects to pursue and health tips to abide by. The possibilities are endless. I have folders for fitness routines, beauty tips, books to read, gift ideas and what seems like an endless list of sweets for my major sweet tooth to try. The downside to Pinterest is that unlike most sites where you can simply create a username and password to continue, Pinterest only allows you to become a part of the online sensation
via an invitation from someone who is already a Pinterest member. However, since Pinterest is a growing sensation, especially with the younger crowd, you are bound to know someone who can help you out. Similar to Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest lets you “follow” certain people; however, no friend request is needed. Anyone can follow you and vice versa, allowing everyone to share their interests. But if you want to keep certain “pins” hidden, you can make a secret folder. Pinterest is not only helpful at home but it can also be useful for many businesses. Eatery Outtakes The Angry Trout Many people are unaware of the multiple names given to the same fish, which can cause uncertainty when ordering from a restaurant. So to avoid confusion, know this: Herring, lake herring, cisco and tullibee are all the same fish. Having said that, many restaurants, such as The Angry Trout, are now using the name “cisco” on their menus instead of “herring” to avoid confusing visitors. Despite the “name change,” the taste is still the same.

Cook County goes to the … bikes! Superior Cycling Association brings singletrack cycling to Cook County By Jim Boyd Tim Kennedy moves, constantly, and almost always in the woods. In winter, he glides and skates mile after woodland mile on crosscountry skis. In summer, he doesn’t glide: He pumps and coasts aboard a mountain bike – frequently on the same terrain as he skis. Kennedy is passionate about biking, a passion he shares with fellow aficionados who comprise the Superior Cycling Association (SCA), which advocates for biking in Cook County. Kennedy is a board member. While the SCA supports biking in all forms, a central focus is “singletrack” mountain biking. A singletrack is a trail up, down and around hills about the width of a bicycle. Like cross-country ski trails, singletracks can be easy, challenging or downright scary. The SCA slowly is building a singletrack network in Cook County. Right now, there are two sections of track, one at Britton Peak, three miles up the Sawbill Trail from Tofte, and one at Pincushion Mountain just outside of Grand Marais. Together, Kennedy says, the two sections total about 10 miles. The association plans to add two miles to each section this summer. The trails have changed a great deal since the first one at Pincushion, Kennedy said. “That was a ‘rake and ride’ trail,” he said. It was “narrow, twisting and challenging. You could just get your handlebars between trees.” And it wasn’t built with an eye toward such things as erosion control. That changed when the SCA became a chapter of the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). Now the Superior chapter builds all its trails to IMBA standards. That involves much more intensive planning, design and construction, he said, but the benefits are obvious: Not only do the trails provide a more enjoyable experience for riders, the trails put a premium on environmental stewardship. “They require little maintenance,” he said, “and they are built on side hills so you always have drainage” that minimizes erosion. Much as he enjoys mountain biking – “I like to be out in the woods, and I love feeling the exhilaration of sweeping down hills.” Kennedy also views bike trails as an important economic development tool. Look at the growth of the Lutsen 99er, the third annual version of which is on June 29. “The first year, there were 75 riders,” he said. “The second year, there were 425, and this year there already are more than 400 registered. I
A rider flows down a singletrack mountain bike trail at Britton Peak near Tofte. Photo by Hansi Johnson. wouldn’t be surprised to see 600 to 700 riders this year.” Kennedy also points to the Chequamagon Fat Tire Festival in Hayward, Wis., produced, as is the Lutsen 99er, by Lifetime Fitness. “It’s 30-years old, now,” Kennedy said, “and they have a 3,000 limit on the number of riders. So many people apply, they use a lottery to choose the riders.” That 3,000 riders represent a lot of heads on beds and butts on chairs for local Hayward lodging establishments and restaurants. Cook County isn’t there yet as a biking destination, Kennedy said. It probably needs at least 20 miles in its singletrack network at both Britton Peak and Pincushion Mountain, he said. “Our eventual plans are to have 25 miles at Britton Peak and 25 miles at Pincushion,” he said. “We have outstanding terrain to work with: elevation, rocks, great views and overlooks.”
And, he said, continued attention also is needed for other kinds of biking, such as continuing to grow the Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail along Highway 61. If we become a biking destination, Kennedy said, “it can mean a fairly significant increase for tourism. Investing in bike trails really pays off.” Even now, he said, biking is one more thing to do for people “who are coming here anyway.” “Already, you see as many bikes as canoes on cars headed here,” he said. But the competition also is growing. Duluth, 120 miles closer to the Twin Cities, is getting into mountain biking in a big way, for example. “They plan eventually to have a trail system that runs all the way from Fond du Lac to the Lester River,” Kennedy said.
Duluth went for a [state] Legacy grant, city employees wrote the application. When we went for a Legacy grant, a few of us got together to write our own application. Duluth got funded; we didn’t. It really helps when government gets behind efforts like these.” This fall, the SCA may again submit a grant application for Legacy funding, Kennedy said. “We need to rethink, to look at a couple different funding pools.” Meanwhile, the group is preparing for its own race, the Sawtooth Mountain Bike Challenge, on Sunday, Sept. 8. The race will begin in downtown Grand Marais, climb to Pincushion, snake around the singletrack trails there and end in the open area adjacent to a place Kennedy knows well – the Pincushion warming house.
“It helps Duluth that their mayor, Don Ness, has really put the city behind the effort. When

The Secret of Rain Gardens — They Work By Joan Farnam
Reduce your storm water footprint on Lake Superior this year — build a rain garden. They can be beautiful and easy to maintain. and they keep rainwater from carrying sediment and pollutants into the Big Lake. Rain gardens also slow down water, preventing run-off and erosion. “It’s a water quality tool,” said Diane Booth, Cook County Extension agent at a rain garden workshop recently. “You can use it in your yard, and it can reduce dependence on irrigation. Because it slows the water down, it can help deal with heavy rainfall, too.” The trick is to get it built properly and then to take care of it. It’s a garden, after all. But it’s special garden, with lots of mulch, so weeding is kept to a minimum. And the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering grants to help pay to build them. Essentially, a rain garden is a sunken, shallow spot which is located in the best position to recycle water coming from hard surfaces, like roofs and streets. Usually they’re about 8-inches deep, but that varies with the site and the amount of rainwater the garden is expected to treat. The rain garden at the courthouse catches run-off from the parking lot, slowing down the water, capturing sediments and filtering out contaminants.
Gina Todd, for example, had a new rain garden installed in her yard across from the Grand Marais Public Library last fall, thanks to a grant from Soil and Water. A lot of water runs down that street during a rain event, and so Todd’s garden is pretty deep. But in early spring, it became obvious why her rain garden is so deep. It completely filled with water and became a pond for more than two weeks before the ground thawed. And it has collected lots of sediment already this spring. There’s a cement sediment catchment basin at the entrance to the garden, and it is already filling up, she said. The City of Grand Marais partnered with Todd to build the rain garden, which is on the city’s right-of-way, so they sent a crew out to remove the sediment. Ed and Kathy Bolstad also had a rain garden built on their property last year with a Soil and Water grant. It, too, is on the city’s right-of-way, and collects water from two streets. It works really well, Bolstad said. “In the fall, it looked great,” he said. “Really classy. It’s just starting to come up through the mulch right now.” The garden has easily handled all the rainfall and snow-melt so far this year, he added.
April Wahlstrom’s 8th grade class at ISD help clean out the raingarden at the courthouse under the direction of Kerrie Berg, Soil and Water Conservation district manager and Ilena Berg, water plan coordinator. Students include Jack Viren, Will Lamb, Thomas Rankin, Jayson Christenson and Talia Crow.
14 NORTH SHORE HWY 61 JUNE 2013
Rain gardens do require planning, especially those which will handle a lot of water. While the big ones require engineering, smaller ones still need to be carefully planned to work properly, said Kerrie Berg, district manager at Soil and Water. The soil needs to be tested to see how well it drains. If it takes longer than 24 hours, then different soils need to be added to the spot. A typical rain garden mix includes 50 to 60 percent sand, 20 to 30 percent topsoil and 20 to 30 percent compost, she said. There are calculations to determine how big it needs to be to handle all the rain coming off a roof, for example. A one-inch rainfall is the
easiest to treat, although rain gardens always have overflows to handle excess, Berg added. The best part of the planning is deciding what plants to use. There are a wide variety of choices. Homeowners have planted butterfly gardens or stocked them with native plants. They can be a hodgepodge English country garden, or a formal statement that complements the landscaping around a home. A rain garden manual, available at both the Extension office in the Community Center and the Soil and Water office in the courthouse, offers templates for different color schemes and garden sizes, as well as a wide variety of flower and plant selections. Like all gardens, the key to keeping them beautiful (and working) is maintenance. Rain gardens need to be weeded and, for the first few years, watered, until the plants get established. The sediment basins need to be cleaned out, too, usually once a year. Truth be told, they’re not cheap, which is why Soil and Water has secured funding for rain garden grants. The deadline to apply is June 28. For more information, call Berg at 387-3649 or Booth at 3873015. The Soil and Water Web site (http://tinyurl.com/aa2nhyx ) also has lots of information about rain gardens and the grant process. Editor’s note: Joan Farnam is a supervisor for the Soil and Water Conservation District.
Thomas Rankin shovels out sediment that’s been collected from the parking lot under the direction of Ilena Berg.

Mike Boomer talks Dads By Ada Igoe
Fatherhood can be scary and often involves mistakes, but thanks to a class offered through Community Education, Cook County High School football coach Mike Boomer has been helping Cook County fathers face the sometimes daunting task of being called “Dad.” “No dad knows what he is getting into when we bring these bundles of love home,” said Boomer. “We just realize something changed in our hearts and life just got serious!” The class, called Fathers Are Needed (or F.A.N.), started five years ago when Early Childhood Family Education coordinator Lynn Sheils approached Boomer after several mothers in her early childhood development classes mentioned that their husbands could use a class about being dads. The request caught Boomer by surprise. “When you hear the words ‘early childhood development.’ I automatically envisioned diaper rashes, crying babies, baby food and formula, and I didn’t want anything to do with that,” said Boomer. But after thinking about Lynn’s request for a while, Boomer came up with a list of topics he felt would be worth covering in a course for dads and that would answer questions that he’d personally had during his fatherhood journey. The class is in its fifth year, and Boomer now partners with Kevin Sutton of Coldwater Foundation when he teaches the course. The class is open to fathers of all ages and Boomer said he’s had dads in 20s, all the way to dads in their 60s attend their class. In the past, the class has been offered over a series of weekday evenings, but the last F.A.N. course, held in April, was taught over a single weekend. Boomer said it was the biggest, and possibly best, class yet.
Coach Mike Boomer with wife Lori, son Kale, and daughter Brea. For the last five years, Boomer has been helping Cook County men learn about fatherhood through the Community Education class, Fathers Are Needed. In the course, the group focuses on topics such as identifying the windows through which fathers have to engage in their children’s lives, how to notice and be one of the influences in children’s lives, and how to make a life plan and family goals with their children’s mothers, whether married or not. The class seeks answers to questions like, “What is important to our family? Do our lives model that?” While there’s no denying the importance of mothers, Boomer said sons and daughters have questions about themselves that only dads can answer. He uses a statistic on prison populations to illustrate the importance of dads: Of prisoners in the United States, 95 percent are male and 85 percent of those were raised without fathers. “We have all heard about the prison population problem we have in this country,” said Boomer. “Do you think it may be that we have a ‘father’ problem?” One of the biggest challenges Cook County dads face is balancing work load and family time, Boomer says. He recommends that dads turn off the television and take full advantage of the time they have with their families. “You have more time than you think,” he said. He said some of his favorite things about being a dad included dinner, ball games, vacations, bike rides, hugs, deep talks when tucking his son and daughter in at night, and going
on adventures into the wilderness. Now that his daughter is away at college and his son is in high school, Boomer said he especially values the times when his daughter is home and the four of them can enjoy dinner together. “Engage in the life of your children and love their mothers,” he said. “You are going to make mistakes, don’t quit, you have a job to do; get back up and do it.”

For men in the community who aren’t fathers, Boomer recommends they get involved with Little League or contact a pastor or educator to see where there might be a need of positive masculine modeling.
Boomer recommends all fathers attend a F.A.N. class. Those interested in signing up

When you teach someone to fish…
Recently, I taught six adults how to fish without taking them fishing. The Basic Fishing class was held at North House Folk School, which is located on the harbor in Grand Marais, so our casting practice area was just outside the classroom. The class was comprised of four men and two women, all over the age of 50. You might say all were seasoned, they just weren’t seasoned anglers. We started the class with brief introductions. Everyone had a little fishing experience, but not enough to know what they were doing. I find this is pretty common among adults who develop an interest in the outdoors. Living in Minnesota, it’s hard not to have some exposure to outdoor activities, but it is hard for many folks to find a mentor who can teach them how to participate in them. For instance, you can hire a guide to go fishing, but that doesn’t mean you’ll learn anything. The guide’s job is to help you catch fish, not to teach you how to do it. Since guides often have customers with minimal fishing skill, they use simple, but productive fishing methods. All a neophyte needs to do is hold on to the fishing rod and follow the guide’s instructions to have a good chance for success. But there is more to fishing than catching fish. You need to know how to operate a rod and reel, how to tie knots and rig tackle, and how to use various baits and lures. Someone has to teach you these skills. Then you have to practice them. For the class, I rounded up spinning rods and reels and a selection of tackle for each student. My objective was to make sure they understood how to use everything by day’s end.
We started the day learning how to tie an improved clinch knot, which is about the only knot you really need to know in order to go fishing. We practiced first on a length of rope; then we went tried it on six-pound monofilament line. I was surprised at how quickly everyone mastered the knot. Next, we learned about the spinning rod and reel. I explained why a spinning rod is better to use for fishing than a push-button, spincast outfit. The students attached reels to rods. Then we wound line on the reels. This task proved more difficult than expected. Aging eyes had trouble seeing the thread-like monofilament. One fellow reeled the line on backwards. Everyone had line twists and tangles, which were up to me to untangle.
Once the reels had line, I gave everyone a casting plug made from a wine cork and an eye screw. Then I demonstrated how to open the reel’s bail, hold the line with your forefinger and make a cast. I offered the same advice I give budding fly casters: Focus on where you want your bait to go—then the act of casting comes naturally. Soon, everyone was down on the docks along the harbor, casting their wine corks upon the water. After lunch, we learned about tackle. I assembled a basic selection of tackle that would not only consistently catch fish, but also teach the class how to use various baits and lures in different situations. We started with jigs. Next we learned about slip bobbers. Everyone took their bobber rigging down to the water to see how it worked. “Ok, now I get it,” was a common response. Using soft plastic minnows as substitutes for the real thing, I showed them a few ways to hook and rig live bait. One student said she could now bait her own hook—provided she was wearing gloves to do so.

In a fishing class for adults taught by the author, students received a rod and reel as well as selection of tackle. From left to right are Wayne Hensche, John Hill, Laurie Hill (all of Grand Marais), Jim Sulerud of Chaska, Jim Fowler of Winstead, Kathy Sullivan of Grand Marais. We worked our way through Mepps spinners, Shad Raps and casting spoons. Not surprisingly, the spoon was a big hit because it was easy to cast. However, several students also remarked how they noticed the Shad Rap would dive to various depths depending on the speed of their retrieve. We talked about what lures would be best for various fish species and how some could be cast or trolled. For spinners, I showed them how to use a ball bearing swivel to prevent line twist. By then, everyone had already experienced line twist and understood why you want to avoid it. The afternoon passed quickly. We finished the class by talking about fishing in the north country. Everyone received a copy of Duluth author Mike Furtman’s “A Boundary Waters Fishing Guide.” We talked about walleyes, stream trout, northern pike, lake trout and smallmouth bass. I tried to give them just enough information about where and when to find the different fish without overwhelming and boring them with too much information. Even so, I could see my class, attentive all day, was beginning to glaze over.
I’d planned to include a couple of hours of actual fishing on a nearby lake, but a delayed ice-out nixed that portion of the class. Hindsight being 20-20, that time was better spent in the classroom. One student suggested that a second “on the water” class be offered for the “graduates” of basic fishing. Since everyone went home with a rod, reel and small, but well stocked, tackle box, I’m pretty sure they will get out on their own. One couple planned to go fishing with their grandkids. The others had similar plans. Whether they head out on their own or go fishing with others, I’m confident they learned enough to mostly avoid frustration and embarrassment. With luck, they should be able to catch fish. I like to think my fishing class will be a lifechanging experience for the students. After all, when you give someone a fish, you feed them for a day. When you teach someone to fish, you feed them for life. Thanks to the generosity of Shimano, Northland Tackle, Outdoor News, Mepps and Michael Furtman, six more people now know how to feed themselves.
