by Joan Farnam Music continues to be the dominant theme in Cook County this month, with two music festivals at Papa Charlie’s, a finger-picking event at Bluefin Resort, a folk music concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts and lots of musicians playing in other venues around the county. (See the Entertainment Calendar for details.) First up at Lutsen Mountains is the Sweetwater Shakedown Music Festival April 4-6 featuring three days of top-notch bluegrass music as well as a variety of other styles. Bands performing include Boys ‘n’ the Barrels, the Absynth Quartet, the Sans Souci Quartet, the Travelin’ McCourys and the Roe Family Singers. Acoustic guitar virtuosos Keller Williams as well as Gordon Thorne and Paul Mayasich will also perform at the festival.
Two weeks later, Lutsen Mountains celebrates the end of the ski season with Mountain MeltRed Horse (Eliza Giulkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky) down, a two-day music festival will be in concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts April 27. April 13-14 featuring 10 bands,
an outdoor stage and a beer garden. There’s great finger-picking going on that weekend, too, when Jim Ohlschmidt joins Gordon Thorne to host the 3rd annual Fingerstyle Masters Weekend at Bluefin Resort. The event kicks off on Friday, April 12, with local favorite Gordon Thorne playing blues and hillbilly music from 8-10 p.m. On Saturday, Thorne and Ohlschmidt will present workshops throughout the day, including “Fundamentals of Form,” “John Hurt’s County Blues Guitar” and “The Nashville Thumbstyle.” The duo will then perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. Thorne is well-known in the county for his finger-picking prowess and performs regularly at the Bluefin Grille as well as other local venues. “Lost Jim” Ohlschmidt, who was inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, has played across the country and recorded a number of CDs, including two CD’s of Hurt’s songs. He is also a freelance writer and has written for several magazines, including Acoustic Guitar, Frets, Fingerstyle Guitar and Mr. Guitar. He has also been a fingerstyle guitar instructor at the Alabama Folk School, Lakeland College in Wisconsin, and the Homestead Picking Parlor in Minneapolis. To register for the workshops, call 218-3537308 or visit www.bluefinbay.com. Tickets for the concert are $10 and can be purchased at the door or reserved by calling 663-6200. (Note: last year’s concert sold out.) All proceeds will be donated to WTIP Community Radio. Another big music event scheduled for April is a concert by Red Horse at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts April 27. Red Horse is folk music’s newest supergroup and features awardwinning singer/songwriters Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky. All of these musicians have been recognized by national music organizations for their significant contributions to the genre. Gilkyson was nominated for a Grammy and both she and Kaplansky have appeared on Mountain Stage. All three songwriters have won awards and accolades wherever they’ve played, and the concert, which is sponsored by the North Shore Music Association, should be energetic and a lot of fun. For more information about tickets, visit www.northshoremusicassociation.com. Theater and dance take front and center stage this month, too.
Bronze sculptor Tom Christansen has been making these bronze horses this month in his studio at Last Chance Gallery in Lutsen. He writes: “I dump out the bronze scrap bucket, select pieces that look like a horse and then weld.” He’s made several of them in different colors and postures. Some will stay at Last Chance Gallery, the others will go to Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Dogsledding, Logrolling and Shot Put: and Only 16 By Breana Roy Jessica Berg-Collman is an extraordinary girl. She is 16-years old, a junior in high school, and has already accomplished a great deal and set many records. She’s also no stranger to recognition. Jessica is a professional logroller, money raising musher, and shot put thrower in track and field. Jessica began dog sledding at age 10 after going on a ride with Mark and Mary Black. She caught on quickly. Jessica also gives credit to Frank and Sherri Moe for sparking her interest in dogsledding.
“I don’t know. I’m not sure if I’d want to ever do Beargrease. Maybe someday I guess, but I think I’ll stick with Mush for a Cure right now,” she says. “I just love raising the money and helping out.” At age 10, Jessica also started taking logrolling classes from Jenny Atkinson. Jessica proved to be very talented and has made it to the Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wis. Last year she placed first and was able to turn professional. She has also competed in the Minnesota State Championships and came in fourth out of 12. To show off her skills, she will be performing three shows a day at this year’s Fisherman’s Picnic with Jenny Atkinson. She will also be competing in the chainsaw competition.
When asked about any current events planned or goals she was working on, she replied, “Well, I am 16, so I’d like to get my own car to drive,” A perfectly acceptable and humbling answer for someone with so many amazing achievements.
She ran her first sled dog race at age 11 in Mush for a Cure, an annual 25-mile race that raises money for breast cancer research. Jessica has now raced in Mush for a Cure six times and always dedicates her run to someone who has been affected by breast cancer. This year she decided to recognize Pam Taylor, and she raised $2,700. Along with the personal satisfaction, she also won an award for being the first team off the lake, and she only had six dogs. Jessica and her mother, Julie Collman, also volunteer for the Beargrease Sled Dog Race each year. However, Jessica seemed hesitant about racing the Beargrease herself.
When asked about any current events planned or goals she was working on, she replied, “Well I am 16, so I’d like to get my own car to drive,” A perfectly acceptable and humbling answer for someone with so many amazing achievements. Along with her success in dogsledding and logrolling, Jessica is also a volleyball player and throws shot put for track and field. She started shot put in ninth grade and by 10th grade she made it to Sections. She’s hoping to make it farther this year
after all the working out and training she has been doing. Not only is Jessica an amazing athlete, she’s also a philanthropist. She recently singlehandedly organized the Save a Boob Fishing Contest, raising about $900 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The contest was complete with games for the kids and numerous prizes. Jessica isn’t exactly sure what she wants to do after graduation or where she wants to go. But no matter what she chooses to do, we can definitely expect great things from her. “My dream is to teach different countries logrolling. That way it can someday be in the Olympics,” she says. “I want to coach it. I mean, if speedwalking can be an Olympic sport then logrolling should be too.” Jessica can be found teaching logrolling on Monday and Tuesday nights from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the Rec Park Pool for anyone interested in learning. Telework’s Promise for Cook County By Jim Boyd The words “telework” and “telecommute” don’t trip lightly off the tongue. Mention them, and you likely will get a vacant look in response. That’s because they don’t tell you what someone does, just how they do it: by remote computer connection. And yet the two words may together capture Cook County’s greatest hope for sustainable, low-impact economic development, especially development that makes it possible for more young families to put down roots here. Linda Luebchow knows all about telework. It’s what she does every day from the small office she rents at Cook County Higher Education’s North Shore Campus. Luebchow works for the immunization registry at the Minnesota Department of Health. When Luebchow’s husband retired from his teaching position several years ago, the couple moved permanently to their home near Paradise Beach east of Grand Marais. “If it hadn’t been for this (teleworking arrangement),” Luebchow says, “I would have had to retire, too. And I didn’t want to do that.”
Luebchow is an ardent advocate for the benefits telework promises Cook County, especially once Arrowhead Electric’s fiber-optic broadPreparing forSystems Broadband Licensed Technology Contractor: data, video, audio, & band network is complete. It’s Already Here In 2010 there were 140 residents of Cook County who worked for employers in Duluth, the Twin Cities, Grand Rapids and other cities, according to the U.S. Census. Many, perhaps most, of them telecommute – connecting with their employers via computer connections. “Telecommuting” comes in many flavors. At one end of the spectrum, it can involve employees working on their own and connecting occasionally via email or Skype. At the other end, it involves someone making a daily connection between their computer and their company network located elsewhere. The latter workers tend to connect via something called a “virtual private network” or VPN. With a VPN connection, it’s as if remote workers were actually in the company office. VPN connections and dial-up or satellite Internet get along about as well as a Model A and a trip to the moon: They don’t. That said, some telecommuters are doing amazing things from Cook County already: designing software, writing technical manuals, editing books, selling real estate, managing nonprofits, working as chemists and physicistsand project managers. A recent, informal survey of county telecommuters also elicited a number of comments from people who a) live in the Twin Cities, now telecommute to jobs elsewhere in the Twin Cities and are eager to move that work to Cook County or b) work elsewhere but plan to begin telecom-

muting and move to Cook County once Arrowhead inaugurates broadband service. From this anecdotal information, it seems clear that Cook County will get a substantial economic and population boost from the advent of Arrowhead broadband. This will happen without much effort beyond Arrowhead lighting up its fiber-optic network. A much more determined effort will be required to create telework opportunities for young people just starting out, especially those who have no skills that lend themselves to telework.
Making It Happen Julie May manages work-at-home programs for UnitedHealthCare in the Twin Cities. She’s responsible for 10,000 teleworkers, including 3,000 in Minnesota – most of whom do not live in the Twin Cities. Creating a strong community telework environment, May says, should involve local government, people responsible for local economic development, educational institutions and broadband providers. She lists three primary responsibilities: Marketing yourself as a teleworker-friendly community to those who would like to live on the North Shore and who may not know telework is possible from here. Making connections with area community colleges to ensure training is available for local residents in career areas easily adaptable to telework. In the absence of a local community college, this chore falls to Cook County Higher Education. CCHE executive director Paula Sundet Wolf is aware of and exploring this need. Developing and marketing a broadband telework package to potential telework employers. This, May says, involves the local telcoms (CenturyLink and Arrowhead Electric) creating service packages that best meet telework requirements (She recommends 15 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Asymmetrical service is best, she says), setting an attractive price for the service and developing the resources to provide sameday service responses when problems inevitably arise. Before employers seriously will consider hiring teleworkers, May says, they must be assured of stable connections, stable pricing and quick service-response times. Some time ago, UnitedHealthCare created a customer-service call center in a remote Texas community where job opportunities were minimal. They only pay $8-$15 per hour. But the work is full-time, year-round and provides vacation, health-care and other benefits. From the perspective of Cook County workers surviving on part-time, seasonal jobs paying the same wage, those UnitedHealthCare jobs would look pretty good.

Twenty Dead Dogs is Too Many By Shawn Perich A strange, sad irony of this legislative session is that efforts to save wolves from hunting may lead to the deaths of some dogs by trapping. Efforts to revisit the regulations regarding the use of body-grip traps, which critics say are responsible for killing several dogs every year in Minnesota, have been stymied by legislators who say they will not introduce any trapping bills in 2013 for fear that anti-wolf hunting measures may be attached to them. The issue of body-grip traps and dogs is not new. For years, dog owners have complained, often after losing a pet, about the lethal consequences of a dog being inadvertently caught in a bodygrip trap, which is designed to kill quickly. The dog owner may have even been there when the incident occurred, but lacked the ability to remove the trap before it killed the dog. The Minnesota DNR has always acknowledged such incidents occur, but essentially brushes them off as insignificant on a statewide basis. But dog deaths suddenly became significant a couple of years ago, when a handful of dog owners, most of whom had lost dogs in body-grip traps, decided to do something about the issue. They formed a group, Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping, to push for reform of the rules for using body-grip traps. Most of the members are the owners of hunting dogs. They emphasize that while they are seeking changes to trapping rules, they are not opposed to trapping.
“Our group tries very hard to distance ourselves from anti trapping and hunting organizations,” says Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN board member and hunter Brett Harberts of Emily. Unlike foothold traps, which are designed to capture and hold an animal by its foot, body-grips are intended to kill an animal quickly by closing on its neck. They are also commonly called “Conibear” traps after inventor Frank Conibear. While they come in sizes small enough for muskrats to large enough for beavers, the mid-sized traps, sizes 160 and 220, are of greatest concern to dog owners. In Minnesota, both traps may be set on the ground either in a baited set or as unbaited set along a trail. The beaver-sized 330 body-grip must be at least half-submerged in water, which makes it much less likely to inadvertently capture dogs or other unintended animals. Last year, the Legislature tweaked body-grip rules so that 160s and 220s used in baited sets must be recessed seven inches from the top of an enclosure or placed at least three feet off the ground. Unbaited body-grips must be at least 20 feet from any attractant. These statewide rules are significantly less restrictive than rules put in place several years ago to protect the federally threatened Canada lynx in northeastern Minnesota. According to the lynx rules, any 160 or 220 placed on the ground must be set in a cubby, with the trap a minimum of seven inches from the opening. The opening may not exceed 50 square inches, which is a 7- by 7-inch square. Unbaited trail sets are not allowed.
being killed in body-grips since the lynx rules were adopted. The same cannot be said of the statewide rule. The Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN website notes the organization documented 13 dogs killed between Oct. 20 and Dec. 31, 2012, the first trapping season for which the new statewide rules were in effect. An additional 7 dogs were killed between Jan. 1 and Mar. 15 2012, before the rules were enacted. This means a total of 20 dogs were killed by traps in Minnesota during 2012. Harberts says in contrast, Wisconsin has reported very few dog deaths due to body-grips since changing its trapping rules in the

Spring Forward With Food & Wine By Joan Farnam Spring forward with Lutsen Resort’s “Spring Food & Wine Weekend” April 5-6, and savor the early harvest. This outstanding culinary event, one of two exciting wine dinners held in the county each spring, will highlight the harvest at this time of year, said Rob Wells, executive chef at Lutsen Resort. Wells and guest chef Mike DeCamp, chef de cuisine at La Belle Vie in Minneapolis, are working together to create a truly wonderful food experience with the freshest ingredients of the season. Think lamb and leeks, newly harvested greens, wild mushrooms and spring onions, and then sit back and let the chefs decide how to create with them. That’s about how this food and wine weekend has evolved, Wells said.
– leeks popped into my mind immediately,” Wells said. “They’re coming out of the ground right now – so leek soup.” Early vegetables like pea shoots and wild mushrooms were a natural for his fourth course, and dessert includes mint, a reliable early spring taste. The other half of dinner is the wine pairings that will complement and expand the food experience.
Here’s the complete menu: • Serrano ham with almond milk, toasted sesame, and espelette. • Leek soup with sliced truffles, frizzled leeks, leek oil. • Poached sturgeon with morcilla, toasted buckwheat and spring onion. • Spring vegetable gnocchi, wild mushrooms, pea shoots, English pea coulis. • Leg of lamb with summer squash, black garlic, braised mustard greens. • Chocolate ricotta pastry, strawberry kiwi relish, crème anglaise, mint.
“We came up with the basic idea – spring harvest,” he said. “Things are just coming into season right now, and that focuses us on what we want to do.”
The two chefs decided they would work together to create tasty hors d’oeuvres for the reception and wine tasting on Friday night and then alternate courses for the formal 6-course dinner with wine pairings on Saturday night. DeCamp, who is an award-winning chef and a finalist in the James Beard national chef contest this year for Best Chef-Midwest, will do the first, third and fifth courses. Wells will do the second, fourth and dessert. “For the second course – salads and soups

Andrew Beavers, wine and beverage manager at Lutsen Resort, was given the menu and began researching what wines would be spectacular with these foods. Beavers said he decided to go with Oregon wines for the sixcourse meal. “I had a taste of the Oregon wine portfolio, and it was wonderful.” he said. “It’s such a great region for this time of year. The food is going to be spring, and the dishes will be light. I think these wines will play well with that.”
Beavers said the Friday evening horsd’oeuvres event will feature “really nice highend hors d’oeuvres, and we’ll taste from four to six wines. It’s more of a causal, open feel.” The Saturday night event is formal. “I give a brief description of each wine before the pairing,” he said. “Then the chef will come out and speak about what they did with a particular course. It’s really fun.” The wines he chooses are not typically available at a neighborhood beer store, but larger wine shops will carry them, and they can be found online, he said. “What I really focus on when I’m trying to put

this together, is getting wines that people don’t have in their house. We want it to be special – evocative of a wine tasting, very experiential.”
“They come to Lutsen and have a really nice wine dinner and make a vacation out of it.”
Guests are welcome to stay at the resort for the weekend so they don’t have to drive, Wells said.
Bluefin By Resort also will hold a Food & Wine Lovers Weekend May 3-4 featuring Chef Judi Barsness. The event will feature a four-course dinner with wine pairings on Friday night, a wine tasting on Saturday afternoon and a five-course dinner with wine pairings on Saturday night.
“We encourage people to stay. We do shuttles for people. And we generally do these dinners on nights when we are slower, so there are plenty of rooms available.” People come year after year for the event, he said.

late 1990s. At the time, Wisconsin was among several states that modified trapping rules following the national development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for trapping. Minnesota chose not to incorporate BMPs into its trapping regulations. In fact, aside the state’s trapping regulations have been largely unchanged for decades. The same could be said of the mindset of the state’s wildlife bureaucracy and state trapping leaders, both of whom have been reluctant to take the concerns of dog owners seriously, perhaps from a fear that by doing so they would be taking a step down a slippery slope toward and eventual all-out trapping ban. The problem is Minnesota has changed. In 1980 Minnesota’s population was just over 4 million. In 2012, the population was estimated at nearly 5.4 million. During that time frame we’ve seen a tremendous outmigration to rural areas, especially in the lakes region, by people seeking a better quality of life. Very often that quality of life involves spending more time outdoors. Trappers are no longer alone. They are now joined by bird hunters using pointers and retrievers hounds used to pursue raccoons, coyotes, rabbits and other critters. No less important are the many rural dwellers who take their dogs along when hiking, skiing and winter camping. It’s fair to say none of these folks wants their dog to be at risk of being killed in a trap. In recent years, the Minnesota Trappers Association has run an advertisement in the state hunting regulations booklet showing how to remove an animal from a body-grip trap. From my own experience using body-grips, I don’t believe the Average Joe or Jill would have the know-how or physical strength to quickly remove a
Harberts says Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN may have been stymied by the 2013 Legislature, but they aren’t going away until dogs are safe from body-grip traps. It won’t be easy to change existing rules, because trappers and wildlife bureaucrats are reluctant to give up body-grip trapping techniques that are effective and convenient for trappers. Harberts says his group and the Minnesota Trail Hound Association continue to have cordial discussions with trappers on the issue, but have made little progress toward resolution. Until they do so, more folks are likely to lose their hunting dogs and family pets. Killing 20 dogs in a year is unacceptable, especially when nearly all of those losses are preventable. It’s time for the DNR to act like professional wildlife managers and address the issue. The agency’s goal should be to have zero dogs killed in body-grips. The DNR needs to take the appropriate steps to achieve that goal through a combination of conflict resolution and new trapping rules. While making changes to protect dogs may inconvenience trappers, there doesn’t appear to be any evidence from Wisconsin or other states that doing so will have any effect on the fur harvest. It’s past time for Minnesota to make the changes necessary to protect dogs from body-grip traps.

learning 2 txt 4 dummies By Breana Roy I’ve grown up in a society where technology is always evolving. So knowing how to use a computer, cell phone, iPod or other electronic device has always seemed to come naturally. Yet it can stump those decades older than me. While my dad can tear an airplane apart and put it back together, figuring out how to make a cell phone call seems to be too difficult for him, let alone send a text message. And even though my mom taught herself how to text, she goes overboard and tries to shorten every word possible, making it a game to try and decipher what she’s really saying. Now, being an English Major, I’m pretty particular about my grammar, but even I slip into a different lingo sometimes when texting. If you’re going to keep up with young folks who can text an entire paragraph quicker than you can say “laughing out loud” then you’re going to have to know some basic texting terms. First off, while most people know “lol” or “laughing out loud,” there are many other variations of laughing. You could be “rofl” or “rolling on the floor laughing.” Or you could be “lmao,” aka “laughing my a** off. ” You could even combine the two for an epic “roflmao.” Another route would be to simply use haha or hehe. Depending on how many ha’s or he’s are used will determine the funny factor for the recipient, so choose appropriately.

Many words can be shortened to a single letter, saving you precious texting time and letting you text much more rapidly. Such words include “y” instead of “why,” “r” vs. “are,” “c” for “see/sea,” “u” in place of “you,” and many more. Numbers can also be incorporated into words like “b4” instead of “before” or “2” for “to, too and two.” Sometimes you want your texting conversation to be kept a secret. It’s those types of conversations that you become paranoid of people peaking over your shoulder. If that’s the case and someone is hovering, just type “pos” and your recipient should know that there is a parent/person over your shoulder and the conversation isn’t safe anymore As for capitalizations, commas and periods when texting, who cares? Lowercase letters are the norm for texting, and great punctuation isn’t expected, although if used it’s always an improvement. Just don’t use all uppercase letters or it is considered RUDE SHOUTING and nobody likes getting yelled at. Nowadays many people have smart phones, allowing them to send emoticons for almost anything such as faces, hearts, hand gestures and more. However, the basic self-typed happy and sad faces are still commonly used. Send :) or :( to depict your emotions. Turn your sad face into :’( to show your tears, or turn that frown upside down with a cheesy, wide smile such as :D or :P instead. You can send a ;) to wink at your texting buddy. Feel like your faces are missing a nose? Insert a hyphen to change your faces into :-) or :-D, etc. If you do have a smart phone, then sending emoticons in
place of words is always an option. Try playing different guessing games, such as sending emoticons to represent song lyrics to stimulate hours of entertainment, laughter and fun. The world of cell phones and texting is virtually unlimited. Phrases, faces, games and abbreviations are always changing and expanding. While it may seem impossible to
keep up, follow these simple texting “rules” and you can do no wrong. But beware, you might just outdo the stereotypical teenager and become a texting fiend! I’ve already created monsters out of my parents, although I suppose I should feel pretty lucky to have such “hip and cool parents,” according to them. So until next month, ttyl and ttfn, talk to you later and ta ta for now!

New study will investigate reasons behind high mercury in Cook County newborns
By Ada Igoe
We can’t just make sexual violence disappear…
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has partnered with Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to conduct a study of 500 Cook County women of childbearing age to help determine why Cook County newborns exhibit high levels of mercury. The study is funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.
This new study comes on the heels of a 2007-2011 study of mercury levels in 1,465 newborns in the Lake Superior Basin in which MDH participated along with the Wisconsin and Michigan departments of health. That study found that 10 percent of newborns in the Minnesota region of the study have mercury levels above the EPA’s safe level, with a particularly high concentration of high mercury levels in Cook County newborns.
This new study will allow the MDH to do just that. The exact role of Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and the Grand Portage band has not yet been exactly determined. However, McCann said the study will work to determine why Cook County newborns have high levels of mercury and work to better educate expectant mothers about which types of fish are safe to eat.
McCann said they plan to begin enrolling Cook County women in the study in January 2014 and will continue to enroll women for about a year. Women who qualify for the study will be asked to participate when they go in for a regularly scheduled appointment.
At this point in the study’s development, McCann said she believes participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their fish-eating habits and also submit a blood sample. The blood sample will be used to test participants’ levels of mercury and Omega 3 fatty acids to help determine each participant’s level of fish consumption.
Ideally, at the end of the study, participants’ blood sample will show a decrease in mercury. But the same levels of the healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, said McCann. “We want women to keep eating fish,” McCann said. Cook County residents will likely see more educational mate-
rial about fish consumption over the next few years as the MDH works to get women consuming fish with lower mercury levels. “There are lots of fish that women can eat,” she said. McCann recommends women eat smaller fish and fish that are lower on the food chain, like pan fish and crappies. Lake herring, whitefish, salmon, and perch are also good low-mercury fish choices. To date, the Minnesota Department of Health has only done mercury level studies in the Lake Superior basin, so it’s unknown whether Cook County’s mercury levels are unusually high compared to the rest of the state, said McCann.

But we can work towards the goal of ending violence by checking our own behavior, promoting positive images of women and men, and reevaluating the language we use. Ending violence takes all of us.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month n
“One good way to help with mercury levels is to work with health care providers since that’s where women get most of their health information,” said McCann.
The Minnesota Department of Health will launch a study in 2014 in partnership with the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Grand Portage Band to help Cook County women develop healthy fish-eating habits. The study hopes to reduce the level of mercury found in Cook County newborns. Photo by Ada Igoe.

Because developing nervous systems are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of mercury, the MDH wanted to work with Cook County clinics to see if they could reduce newborn mercury levels, said Pat McCann of the MDH, who is the lead on the Cook County study. Fetal exposure to methylmercury (the type of mercury found in fish) can lead to issues with cognition, memory, attention, language, and fine motor and visual spatial skills in children.

Cook County recycles tons of stuff By Joan Farnam
working with Hartel’s in December, and it has been profitable, he said.
More than 35,000 pounds of recycled materials are shipped out of the Cook County Recycling Center every week. Last year alone, 1,029 tons or 2.1 million pounds of solid waste was collected there, according to a report that was released last month.
When the Recycling Center was first started in 1988, the goal was to substantially reduce the solid waste that was being trucked to landfills. Businesses were encouraged to recycle, as were homeowners, and the program has met some of its goals.
That’s a lot of recycled materials, but is only one quarter of the solid waste Cook County generates every year. The recyclable materials are hauled to Hartel’s/DBJ Disposal Companies in Proctor, where they eventually end up in factories, paper mills, steel mills and other firms in Minnesota, across the country and the world to be reused or repurposed. The good news is that all that glass, corrugated cardboard, newspaper, magazines, mixed paper, steel cans, aluminum, mixed plastic and lead acid batteries are removed from the county’s solid waste stream. And the Recycling Center makes some money out of it. In all, the recycling program brought in $48,000 in 2012. More than half that revenue came from the Budget Shop ($27,000) while aluminum cans accounted for another $18,000, said Jeff Sylvester, operator/manager of the Recycling Center. “It’s nice to see a fiscal return,” he said, as he gave a tour of the facility recently. The price for recycled materials fluctuates with the stock market, he said. “Like any commodity, it goes up and down. When the economy tanked in ‘08, it wasn’t worth much. The markets are improving.” Sylvester said the only thing that’s not making much money is glass and used unwearable clothing. The brokerage fee that Hartel’s charges for handling glass ($35 a ton) pretty much cancels out what they can get for it, he said, and there’s no market at all right now for used clothing. “We dumpster it,” he said. “Before the recession, it went to the auto industry, but we lost those markets. There’s less need for it, and we’ve not been able to find good, viable buyers.” The Recycling Center is looking forward to making more money this year. It just started

“Our goal was to hit a 35 percent rate for homeowners,” he said, and that was met last year. But more could be done, he added. “Every business recycles,” he said. “They pay by volume, so it behooves them to reduce.” Homeowners, on the other hand, can recycle for free, but many just don’t bother. The figures reflect this. In all, Cook County generated 4,900 tons of solid waste in 2012, and 3,636 tons of that ended up in landfills. Curbside pickup of domestic recyclables just isn’t feasible, he said. “The county can’t afford it.” Instead, the program has set up five rural collection points to make recycling easier for both households and businesses. Three of the five rural stations are specifically for businesses to use. Collection stations up the Sawbill Trail in Tofte, near the old airport, and the one in Grand Portage are open for household use as well. The Grand Portage site also handles business waste, including cardboard, he said. “Grand Portage is also paying to pull the trailer. They bring it in to us,” he said. “They’re good stewards of what they’re doing. Their green trailer is always impeccably cared for ... seldom is anything in the wrong place.” Quality recyclables have to be properly sorted, and this requires a lot of hand labor, Sylvester said, which is the primary reason why the recycling center is not open to the public all day every day. The employees need time to sort and bale what’s coming in every day, he said. The center has four full-time employees, and one has to staff the Budget Shop for half a day, so everybody is scrambling to get things ready for shipment in the mornings, he said. Typically, they will fill a 53-foot tractor-trailer
The Cook County Recycling Center trucks about 35,000 pounds of recyclables every week to its broker in Proctor. Manager/operator Jeff Sylvester is in one of the semi-trailers that’s almost ready to go. Photos by Joan Farnam
with material every week. One of the most time-consuming to process and, ironically, one of the most profitable recyclables, is mixed paper, he said. One thing homeowners are encouraged to do is recycle their junk mail and good quality paper, because it brings a good price and shouldn’t be taking up room in a landfill. Last year, 938 tons of mixed paper was generated in the county, and only 37 percent of that was recycled. Sylvester recommends that personal documents be shredded, but all other mixed paper is welcome. Because the recycling program is focused on reducing all solid waste as well as being good stewards of the environment, it also has organized hazardous waste and electronic waste collections twice a year, takes used oil and oil filters as well as lead batteries, and purchases aluminum cans at $.20 a pound from 1-2:30 p.m. each day. It also takes yard waste. It does not accept furniture, appliances or mattresses. These can be disposed of for a fee at Peterson’s Disposal. The Recycling Center is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and on Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Rick Sturm, left, and Jim Anderson, sort through mixed paper that is being recycled.
Sylvester said that his personal goal is to increase homeowner participation in the re-
cycling program to 50 percent. Recycling is easy, he said. “It’s free, it’s the right thing to do, and it’s environmentally responsible. We hope people will start recycling more.”
