Oh, the drama (cue the violins): Larry Krause of Poplar Lake, vacationing in Florida with a serious get-in-shape agenda, was determined to top the mileage list in Sawtooth Mountain Clinic’s “Move It In February” wellness celebration. Larry was being urged/egged on by Karen Neal, leader/taskmistress of “The Endorphineers,” a legendary 13-member team of which Larry and Jo Ann Krause are members. All 13 of them now are preparing for the fourth annual Move It In May, coming up shortly.
Larry was pretty smug sitting atop the leader board until (add violas to violins) THAT DAY when he was unceremoniously usurped by … Charlie Butter?
Some of Larry’s February miles came atop a

Who the heck, wondering Larry, is Charlie Butter, and how the heck is he clocking up all those miles? (Larry’s actual language was more colorful). When no answer was forthcoming (Larry was, after all, talking to himself), Larry settled down to clock up still more miles. Danged if someone named “Butter” was gonna best him at this.

Alas, Butter did best Krause, at least in the mileage category. Larry ended up with almost three times as many minutes, but Charlie came out 7.1 miles ahead. For the record, Charlie Butter is an employee at North Shore Hospital & Care Center with his own get-in-shape agenda who recorded all those miles on a stationary bike. The Endorphineers suffered a fate similar to Larry’s: Until the last evening of February, they were far in first place for both overall miles and miles per member. Whereupon (fortissimo violins) the Sawtooth Elementary School Third Grade input its results. Although the class had less than half the Endorphineer miles, a computer error caused them to be counted as one person. And just like that, the Endorphineers were pushed to second place by a bunch of 8-year-olds. (begin William Overture)

matters, you haven’t been hanging out with “Move It” aficionados. The Endorphineers in particular take it very, very seriously. Two members of that team, Karen Neal and Jim Gulstrand, primed themselves for Move It In February with a little jaunt up Mount Sherman, a Colorado fourteener, in January. And the women at the center of the team (Karen Neal and Jetty St. John) have a competition going with Buck Benson almost as intense (and as one-sided) as the Butter/Krause race.
In their office at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, the folks responsible for Move It – Patty Doherty, Teresa Borak and Kristin Wharton – chuckle in amazement at all of this. They’re pleased but also a little surprised at how the Move It program has caught the imagination of more than a few county residents.
They’re also refreshingly casual about the rules. It didn’t matter that Larry and Jo Ann Krause were clocking up miles in Florida. It doesn’t much matter what you do; so long as you move, good for you.
The miles-and-minutes program actually is only a small piece of the “Move It” Celebration. Other elements of the May celebration include Walk To School Wednesdays, the Ham Run 5k and half marathon, a bike safety rodeo, a bike/walk to work week, a series of brown-bag lunch presentations on wellness at the clinic and several other events. The entire schedule is online at http://www.sawtoothmountainclinic.org/events/info.php
While you are there, stop by the home page, perhaps sign up for the May event, then scroll to the bottom and take note of the sponsors who make the “Move It’ celebrations possible. They include Superior North Bike Shop, Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, Statewide Health Improvement Program, Cook County Public Health and Human Services, the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation and the North Shore Health Care Foundation.
Meanwhile, out at Poplar Lake, Larry Krause is busy tuning up for May, though he is surprised to still be using snowshoes to do it. And, Larry, you best really tune up; Charlie Butter has been reported eating bean sprouts.

The Gunflint Green Up had its genesis in the weeks following the Ham Lake Wildfire, when Gunflint Trail residents gathered to replant the burned forest. In 2008, Gunflint Trail businesses and community members collaborated with the U.S. Forest Service, Gunflint District, to create a public tree planting event on the first weekend of May. Since then, Gunflint Green Up volunteers have planted more than 100,000 seedlings. “We want those trees people planted to eventually become the matriarchs of the forest,” said Myra Theimer, U.S. Forest silviculturist, who’s helped coordinate each Green Up event. “The goal was to bring back the pine forest lost in the fire.”
TOP: Nurturing conifer seedlings into matriarchs of the Gunflint Trail forest is what Gunflint Green Up is all about. ABOVE: Volunteers gather at a previous Gunflint Green Up event. Photos by Ada Igoe.
Last year, Gunflint Lodge took over sponsorship and coordination of the event. Gunflint Lodge guests can participate in the event as part of a special cabin rental rate. Green Up participants staying at other establishments or area residents can register with Gunflint Lodge for a fee which covers Saturday lunch and Friday and Saturday dinners. The late spring thaw has left many of this year’s Green Up details to the last minute, said Theimer. The thought is that Green Up volunteers will use Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature
Center, located approximately 55 miles up the Gunflint Trail, as their base. From there, volunteers will work primarily on the Blueberry Hill Trail which is adjacent to the Chik-Wauk Museum property.
tree seedlings, removing unwanted brush, such as raspberry canes and aspen saplings, from around the pine seedlings to helps the seedlings soak up sunshine and lessen the competition for precious nutrients in the soil.
However, once the snow melts, if there appear to be other sections of the Ham Lake fire area more in need of the Green Up volunteers’ attention, the work area may be moved, said Theimer. One alternative location where Green Up volunteers might also work is the land adjacent to the Seagull Lake Public Access, she said.
Due to weather conditions call Gunflint Lodge in advance for information, 18-388-2294.
Never fear: The Green Up will go ahead, even if snow still lingers. The first event proved a great success in 2008, even though volunteers spent the morning planting trees in five inches of freshly fallen snow. Theimer said the Arbor Day Foundation has provided 1,000 white pine seedlings for this year’s events, in addition to conifer seedlings from Hedstrom Lumber Co. Approximately 100 volunteers are expected to take part in this year’s event, said Theimer. Since 2010, volunteers have been “releasing”

Willard Nelson is the oldest man in Cook County -- he’s 98 years old and counting – and he can tell a great story.

In fact, this wonderful, cheerful man loves nothing more than to talk about those early years on the North Shore.

“He weaves a story that’s so sweet,” said Becky Stoner, co-owner of Hillhaven Assisted Living for Seniors, where Nelson has been living for the last four years. “He’s got 100 stories, if not more. The way he tells them, it opens up your heart,” she said. “And it’s our history.” That history stretches back to 1885, when Willard’s Swedish-immigrant grandfather, Charles Axel Nelson, built his homestead overlooking Lake Superior and the mouth of the Poplar River, establishing what eventually became Lutsen Resort. Willard’s father, Carl Frederick, grew up on the resort, and passed on many of his recollections to his son. So Willard has a lot to draw on. Listening to his stories is like touching our past, Stoner said. There are stories of gangsters and illegal stills secreted in a stream somewhere in the backwoods during Prohibition, stories of how his grandfather came here and created Lutsen Resort, tales of the struggles and triumphs of running a fishing resort on Caribou Lake and milking way too many cows in his teenage years. “Beasts!” Willard calls them. His family had a small farm, and milking was one of his chores. He can tell you how to get a Model-T Ford off The America and onto dry land, warn you

when a nor’easter is about to blow, share stories of how to fish in the wintertime on Lake Superior and tell of the Ojibwe who lived here. But Willard himself never took to the North Shore life, which he freely admits.
He didn’t like to fish on the Big Lake (too cold) or row guests around Caribou Lake so they could catch a few. But he did like to talk, and he was fascinated by the stories of the outside world that businessman would tell when rowed out to the fishing grounds. “I was a fishing guide on Caribou,” he said. “I’d listened to their conversations. I knew there was another world out there.”
One day, when he had rowed a guest out fishing, they began to talk and “he got quite interested,” Willard said. When they returned to shore, the man asked to talk to Willard’s mother.
“You’ve got quite a boy, here,” he told her. “He has a lot of potential. If I got a job for him, would you let him come to St. Paul?” “Oh no!” his mother said. “He’s never been to the city.”
But when an aunt said that she had an extra bedroom within walking distance of his job, his mother relented, and Willard had his chance.
He spent the rest of his career as a salesman, starting out with cold calls to clients for Brown & Bigelow calendars and eventually heading up sales offices for car companies across the country.
But every summer he’d come back to visit, said Richard Nelson, his son. “He’d summer here all the time,” he said.
And now that he’s living here full time, Willard is a resource for the entire community.

Fishing Opener Forecast: Ice Expected By Shawn Perich Up here at the tip of Minnesota’s Arrowhead, the fishing opener seems far, far away. Sure, DNR officialdom says it will be legal to cast your lines on Saturday, May 11, but Mother Nature has the last word. Throughout April, her only word has been “snow.” Last week, stuck at home during a recordsetting snowstorm, I called some folks who pay attention to the nuances of Nature to get their perspective on our wintry spring. I had trouble finding folks who were around, especially along the Gunflint Trail, where everyone was taking a between-seasons vacation. At Golden Eagle Lodge, Deb Smith was holding down the fort while Dan and Teresa Baumann were away. Golden Eagle caters to cross-country skiers, so they keep careful records of snow depths. Smith had measured 22 inches of new snow that morning, April 19, while it was still coming down. When we talked, Golden Eagle had recorded 43 inches of snow—nearly four feet-during April. The running total for the year was 110 inches, which is about average for the Gunflint Trail. Looking at the Golden Eagle records, Smith said 128 inches fell during the winter of 08-09. The following year, only 42 inches fell during the winter of 09-10. At the end of the Sawbill Trail, Bill Hansen at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters said it wasn’t the first time he’d seen a big snow in April. He remembered a storm that dumped 17 inches of snow on April 17. He’d recently measured 28 inches of ice on Sawbill Lake and noted the ice was covered with two feet of snow. When would the lake open? Hansen was unwilling to venture a guess. He said the late Dick Raiken, a former owner of the now defunct Sawbill Lodge, once told him so many variables affect ice-out that it is impossible to predict when it will occur. The latest ice-out Hansen recalled from his 57 years at Sawbill Lake was May 24 one spring during the mid-70s. The winter had been especially cold, he said. Lake Superior completely froze over and Sawbill Lake had 48 inches of ice. Another year, he remembers going ice fishing for brook trout in the BWCAW with Duluth outdoor
writer Sam Cook and dog musher Lloyd Gilbertson at the end of March. Nighttime temps reached 30 below. Over the years, Hansen said there have been a handful of fishing openers when the ice wasn’t out at Sawbill Lake. But an opening day bust isn’t a ‘make or break’ for his business. “The opener isn’t a big thing for us, mostly because the early fishing isn’t very good. It used to be bigger,” he said. “However, the weekend after the opener is a big thing.” Orvis Lunke of Grand Marais thinks it isn’t likely that Cook County lakes will be open for the fishing opener. He recalled a recent opener when he watched fishing boats make like ice-breakers on McFarland Lake as they attempted to reach fishing areas. Another year the ice lingered until the opener was 1996. He pointed out that early May ice-outs are common in Cook County.
rivers are buried beneath two feet of fresh snow, with more snow in the forecast. Even if the rivers were to open by the end of the month, it is unlikely the lakes would be open by May 11. My final call was to Bob Olson, the sage of Clearwater Lake and the author of “Two Bucks and a Can of Gas, Model A Adventures on the Gunflint Trail.” He’d been busy shoveling snow off cabin roofs for his friends and neighbors. This was the most snow he’s ever seen this late in the year on the Gunflint Trail. “Some of the snow banks along the Clearwater Road are 5 feet high,” Olson said. Latest ice-out he recalled for Clearwater Lake was May 24. He wasn’t sure of the year, but it may have been 1996. The earliest ice-out was in 2012, when it occurred March 31. The average ice-out is May 4. Deep, narrow and shrouded with rocky palisades, Clearwater is
Down in Silver Bay, my friend Pete Lenski had just cancelled his opening weekend plans for Birch Lake near Babbitt when we talked on April 20. His decision was based upon the weather. The previous day’s snow storm had been pushed out by a high-pressure front of cold Arctic air. As a result, the previous night’s low in nearby Embarrass was 14 below. That, and an extended forecast of belownormal temperatures, led him to believe the Arrowhead is locked into a winter weather pattern.
usually one of the last lakes in the state to lose its ice. Olson said nearby lakes such as Bearskin and Poplar are usually ice-free a week ahead of Clearwater. This year, the weight of all the snow on the ice is forcing water through holes left by ice anglers in late March. Even so, Olson doesn’t anticipate ice going out by the fishing opener.
Olson did pass along an observation he made last year, following a very early ice-out. In normal springs, common loons arrive at Clearwater just as the ice is going out. He always assumed the loons waited on open water, perhaps on Lake Superior, for the ice to leave the inland lakes where they nest. Since the ice was out early, he figured the loons would arrive early as well. Instead, they surprised him by showing up on schedule during the first week of May. As for what the loons will do this year, Olson will have to wait…and wait… and see.

Lenski was willing to go out on a limb and predict ice-out dates in Lake and Cook counties will be around May 18. He based his prediction on a simple observation. Generally, streams and rivers open up about two weeks ahead of the lakes. At this writing, the frozen

“We’re going to be doing something with seasonal foods as well as reflections of Chez Jude,” Barsness said, as she talked about the menu for the dinners.

Seasonal means spring this time of year, and the menus Barsness has developed reflect this. Fresh asparagus, morel mushrooms, ramps (wild onions) and lamb are just a few of the spring tastes included in the food and wine weekend at Bluefin Bay. Stuart Sutherland of Johnson Brothers in St. Paul has developed an inspiring pairing of wines for courses, too.
that every luxurious meal has to end up with chocolate.”
The weekend kicks off on Friday night with a four-course dinner with wine pairings.
In some ways, that’s what Barsness has been doing all her life. Her mother was a chef, and she grew up in a kitchen. She’s worked as a chef in many venues, designing culinary adventures wherever she worked.
“It’s a more casual meal with a bit more spring comfort food,” Barsness said. “We’ll have rhubarb tart, fresh pea tendrils in the salad and asparagus and morels in the wild rice risotto. It’s the creamy texture of the risotto that gives that spring comfort feel to those ingredients.” Friday night’s menu also includes mussels in a saffron broth for the first course, steelhead trout and pea tendrils salad for the second, a duo of braised pork loin and braised pork belly in a black truffle sauce with the risotto for the third and rhubarb tart with rhubarb ginger ice cream for dessert. Then on Saturday night, the dinner includes sea scallops, a spring pea bisque, roasted quail breast, rack of lamb, spring root vegetables with morels, ramps and potatoes, and a bittersweet chocolate lavender torte with homemade ice cream and chocolate tiles for dessert. Saturday’s meal with wine pairings is “the culmination of the immersion food and wine weekend,” Barsness said. “It’s kind of like the icing on the cake.” Spring ingredients like fresh spring peas, chives (the first herb of the season) and tiny micro greens are perfect to set the tone for the evening. The rack of lamb was a “must” for the menu, too. “Rack of lamb was one of the signature items at Chez Jude,” she said. “When we put it on our first spring menu, it was very popular. But when I took it off for late summer, people were up in arms about it. So it ended up being on the menu all year round.” Chocolate is also a must. “It’s one of my major food groups,” she said, and laughed. “I feel
Bluefin’s Food and Wine Lover’s Weekend is designed so that you can choose your experience. “You can do the total immersion or just sample one or two events,” she said. In either case, you can design your own culinary adventure.
She says now she’s in the twilight of her career, but that isn’t slowing her down at all. She has recently accepted a position at Bluefin Bay as a consultant to help them develop and create a new dining concept at the cafe at Surfside Resort. “These are the kinds of opportunities that are very exciting for chefs,” she said. “I’m going to have a lot of fun with creating new foods, new menus, new plates, new presentations.” Barsness has done it before for Bluefin Bay, and accepting this position has almost been like coming home, she said. When she and her husband, Peter, moved to Cook County more than a decade ago, she accepted an assignment with Bluefin Bay to develop a new restaurant concept for what has become the Coho Cafe & Bakery. That project has been incredibly successful and the Coho is a popular eatery and bakery these days. “It has it’s own chef now and has evolved its offerings,” she said. When the Coho was well-established, Barsness began casting around for another challenge, and soon she and Peter started Chez Jude in Grand Marais, which became an award-winning destination restaurant on the North Shore. She closed the restaurant last year but has kept Chez Jude’s catering and personal chef business, which she calls Chez Vous. She’s also teaching cooking classes at North House Folk School. This chef is not slowing down one bit. To find out more, see www.chezjude.com

Great Expectations school provides welltended plants and will be holding a plant sale on May 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The school organically grows the veggie, flower and herb plants from seeds as a major fundraiser for the school. Buying your flowers there is a great way to help out the community, and your garden will sprout well-cared-for plants.
Despite recent snowfalls, somewhere around the corner is spring. Which means it’s time to start thinking green. Freshly grown vegetables and the sweet aroma of flowers will soon fill the air. While not all of us are gifted with a green thumb, those who are begin dreaming of fresh tomatoes, peppers, basil and asparagus. Others start planning how to landscape their house with annuals, perennials and hanging baskets on the porch. No matter what you are looking for, there are numerous greenhouses in the area to gather all of your planting needs. Grand Marais offers Bucks Hardware Hank, the Blue Moose, the Cook County Farm & Craft Market and the Great Expectations School.
Delicious garden veggies. Photo courtesy of Buck’s Hardware
Buck’s Hardware Hank is a great source for all your plants and gardening needs. The first greenhouse shipment should arrive either the second or third week of May. Expect starter veggies and annuals to begin with. As the season progresses, you’ll be able to get perennials and a wider variety of plants. But by July, most of the annuals are gone and the greenhouse is filled with just perennials, so act quickly! Buck Benson says, “We have a pretty good feel for what does well up here. We just want to keep people happy.” Knowing what will grow and what won’t in our rocky North Shore soil is definitely tricky, especially for the inexperienced grower. Thankfully, Buck knows best, providing you with the finest for the North Shore. Buck’s is open seven days a week. For more info, visit www.buckshardware.net or call 387-2280. The Cook County Farm & Craft Market is also a great source for plants and fresh veggies, along with some amazing local arts and crafts. It takes place every Saturday from Memorial Day Weekend through October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Senior Center parking lot.
Hanging Baskets Trees & Shrubs Vegetables Flowers
Another local favorite is the Flower Power greenhouse, located only a few minutes out of Grand Marais on Croftville Road. Plants sold at Flower Power are transported all the way from South Dakota by the semi-truck load, providing the North Shore with a huge assortment of perennials, annuals and veggies. Each shipment brings in different plants, but they disappear fast.
The Blue Moose and Evergreen Originals Greenhouse also provide a wide assortment of plants. The Blue Moose in Grand Marais has annuals, perennials and vegetable starters as well as bushes and trees. It opens May 11. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. You can contact the Blue Moose by calling 387-9303. Evergreen Originals Greenhouse is located on Skyport Lane on Devils Track Lake. Call 18-387-2862 for more details. If you are in Finland, check out Maxwell’s Woodland Nursery. Maxwell’s officially opens Mother’s Day weekend and will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Maxwell’s will supply you with trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, veggies, seeds and hanging baskets. They also sell bulbs in the fall. Maxwell’s will continue getting orders throughout the season, and if they happen to be missing something you want, they can order it for you. Their selling season usually ends the first of October. Pederson developed an exterior design that mirrors the profile of the Sawtooth range along Lake Superior. Already the redesign has prompted numerous people driving by to stop and visit. The Lynches get lots of remarks like that of one visitor who said, “I have been coming here for the last 15 years and had no idea your business was here.”
The store has also stretched out to a little more than double what they had with the old design. The additional windows shed light on the increased inventory and allow for more leisurely shopping. Addition of a fitting room allows for trying on everything from wet suits to the latest in outdoor fashion. Energy efficient design can be felt in the off-peak heated floors, solar gain from the south-facing windows, and solar tubes providing lights in areas not served by windows. New displays are still going in that increase the visibility of their inventory. Still to go in are the new boats that will be hung from the ceiling and mounted outside the building under a covered porch.

“The number of people who drive by on Highway 61 in the summer is just staggering, and people were not stopping or even seeing our shop.,” says Jeff. “We needed a building design that was going to not only echo what we are doing, but also evoke what the area has to offer.”
The new building boasts a spacious and comfortable living area that allows Jeff, Sarah and their two dogs to finally spread out a bit. They talk with excitement of building a patio off their kitchen and adding to their greenhouse and gardens.
