by Joan Farnam The Bluegrass Master’s Weekend, put on by the North Shore Music Association in collaboration with Lutsen Resort, starts off the festival season this month. The event, which will be held Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3, at Lutsen Resort, features nationally acclaimed fiddler Jim Van Cleve of Mountain Heart, well-known for his intense energy, charisma and dazzling musicianship on stage. He’s in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday night. Tickets at the door.

Another highlight of November is North House Folk School’s Winterer’s Gathering & Arctic Film Festival Nov. 21-24. There are workshops and presentations as well as a gear swap, the Snowshoe Shuffle Community Contra Dance and a chili feed.
It will be a jamming paradise, too, as sessions throughout the resort start on Friday night and continue through to Sunday. Everyone is invited to bring their instruments and join in. Music workshops are held all day on Saturday.
Winterer’s Gathering also includes a film festival, screening internationally recognized, award-winning films set in the circumpolar Arctic region, including Lonnie Dupre’s “Cold Love.” The films will be screened throughout the weekend and are free, with popcorn for sale.
A wonderful children’s musical, “Captain Louie, Jr.” will be performed this weekend, Nov. 1-3, at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. It’s a production of the Grand Marais Playhouse. Tickets are available at the door and are $10 adults, $5 students. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. The next weekend features a new festival for Cook County. The Lake Superior Storm Festival is Nov. 7-10 and celebrates the wild side of Lake Superior. Everything from a fashion show at Stone Harbor at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 8, to a Wave Dash at Lutsen Resort at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 are on tap, gale or no gale. On Saturday night, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., Cascade Lodge Pub is hosting a Superior Songwriters Shindig with an open mic for songs about Lake Superior. All invited. “Frozen Photographers,” a photography exhibit by photographers who are members of a Facebook page by the same name, is open at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery through Nov. 10. The exhibit includes local as well as regional, professional and hobby photographers who focus their work on the northwoods. The Johnson Heritage Post is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. At the conclusion of the show, the gallery will close for the season. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 29 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 30 for the event. All invited. The Duluth Art Institute is coming to the Grand Marais Public Library at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, to teach children ages 7 and up how to create a picture frame out of aluminum and decorate it. Paul Schurke:
An unquenchable thirst for adventure By Joan Farnam
P
aul Schurke, the Arctic adventurer who has retraced the steps of famous polar explorers at both the North and South poles, is the featured speaker at North House Folk School’s Winterer’s Gathering this year.
Dogsled Lodge in Ely with his wife, Susan, has considerable Arctic experience of his own. Last fall, he retraced the route that Shackleton took on South Georgia Island to find help for his crew stranded in the Wellington Sea (see insert).
His topic? “Probing the Mysteries of Shackleton’s ‘Endurance’ Expedition.”
Schurke came to his love of ice, snow and explorers like Shacketon via a circuitous route.
“Shackleton stumbled across uncharted mountains and glaciers to seek help in rescuing his stranded teammates,” Schurke said. “No one knows how he survived that. We used the best in modern clothing and gear, but even then, it gave us an insight into his amazing accomplishment.
“I came in through the back door in a wonderful way,” he said in a telephone interview recently. “I grew up in the deep, dark underground of Minneapolis. I was a downtown kid.”
“His expedition had almost a Job-like biblical proportion of tragedy and dangers along the way. But all 28 members of his expedition returned home safely. In those days, most polar expeditions had a huge loss of life.” It should be a fascinating presentation. Schurke, who is the co-owner of Wintergreen
When he was a young boy, his parents bought some wild, remote summer property in northern Wisconsin which “pumped up the sense of adventure in me,” he said. And then, when he was about 10, he went on a church-based canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. “I was so smitten with the scenery, I knew then and there that somehow, some way, I’d

Schurke follows in steps of Shacketon In 1914, British explored Ernest Shackleton sailed to Antarctica with 27 men in hopes of crossing the continent. But his ship, the Endurance, was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea, propelling the team into 20-month nightmare of cold and near starvation. In a desperate attempt to seek help, Shackleton undertook a treacherous 800-mile ocean crossing in an open boat to South George Island. There he faced his saga’s climactic chapter: traversing the island’s soaring, uncharted ramparts to reach a remote sailing station. In the end, he brought his entire team home alive. Last fall, Ely adventurer
Paul Schurke retraced that Georgia route on a ski mountaineering trek that followed Shackleton’s diary notes. Curiously, the writings recount an “unseen presence” felt by Shackleton and his colleagues throughout the crossing. Schurke believes that mystery may be embodied in one of the expedition’s most beloved artifacts: a trail seasoned banjo.

call this my home,” he said. “I schemed and dreamed in high school and college to find a way to make a living up here in the woods.” By the luck of the draw, he had a college buddy at St. John’s University who loved the outdoors, too, and they hatched a plan to put together a wilderness adventure for people who were disabled. “It took off huge,” Schurke said. “There was lots of interest. We’d take people who were blind or deaf and go on a Boundary Waters canoe trip with them.” In fact, the project, which they named Wilderness Inquiry, became such a success that Schurke and his friend started thinking about making it a year-round venture—but they didn’t have any idea how they’d do that. “Friends of ours suggested dogsleds,” he said. “They said, ‘Go to Ely. You’ll meet this guy in a cute little cabin with a sod roof. He has dog teams to go back and forth to town to buy supplies.’” It was 1979, and that guy was Will Steger.” Steger introduced Schurke to dogsledding, and he knew he was home. “I love being with the dogs,” Schurke said. “It’s magical to enjoy winter adventures with these amazing animals. They love to pull, and they thrive in extreme settings. The energy and enthusiasm of the dogs magnifies the enjoyment of the experience many times over.” And it soon became obvious that other people were drawn to that magic, too. Schurke expanded the program for the disabled to take winter trips with the help of Steger, and Wilderness Inquiry became a solid business. “It’s been dogs and winter ever since for me,” Schurke said. “I found my niche.” He also started Wintergreen Dogsledding Lodge, which is the
oldest and largest dogsledding center in the country. “We host hundreds of guests from all over the world from December through March,” Schurke said. “They take dogsled day trips, chocolate-on-the-pillow lodge-to-lodge dogsled vacations and more adventurous dogsled camping trips.” In those early years, Schurke said Steger also shared his passion for the Arctic with him, and, in 1986, they co-led a famous expedition to the North Pole without resupply. The trek resulted in national attention and a best-selling book, “North to the Pole,” which the two men wrote. Schurke’s polar adventures have continued over the last 25 years. He and a Russian colleague led a historic expedition across the Bering Bridge from Alaska to Siberia in 1989, for example. And Schurke led an expedition to the North Pole that helped raise $1 million for Great Aspirations, a family-focused education charity founded by team member Doug Hall. He also has spent time dogsledding in Greenland, as well as leading a variety of treks in the far north. During Winterer’s Gathering Nov. 21-24, Schurke will teach a class called “The History of Dogs and Dog Stories,” as well as talk about his expedition to South Georgia Island. That expedition “brought my fascination with Polar exploration history full circle,” he said. “In 1986, we retraced the route of the most famous North Pole expedition, Robert Peary’s dogsled expedition to the North Pole, and this year, I retraced the most famous South Pole expedition.” Now what? “I’m perfectly content enjoying our adventures in the northwoods and Quetico,” Scchurke said. then he paused for a minute. “But I will be returning next spring to travel with the Inuit in Northern Greenland.” His presentation is at North House at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23.
Have you always lived in Cook County? I was born and raised in rural Nebraska and South Dakota and moved to the Twin Cities in junior high school and lived there until 20 years ago when we moved to Cook County. What projects are you currently working on? I have two events coming up in Scottsdale, Ariz. Xanadu, a gallery there that represents me, has invited me to take part in the Western Art Show. I’m taking down three life-size horses, among other things. Scottsdale also has a Quick Draw event, and I’m taking my little torch and sculpting a horse in two hours. And I have a solo show at Xanadu Gallery in February. What about your art continues to attract and fascinate you? The process of making decisions about what goes where and why is important for me to explore. It’s a visual process that still fascinates me, especially the big assembled pieces I’m working on now. Where can we see your work? At my studio and gallery, Last Chance Fabricating in Lutsen, and there’s a Grandmother’s Bench in front of the Johnson Heritage Post. I also have work at the Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul and Napa, Calif.

Second-graders look forward to eating turkey at Thanksgiving, but we probably shouldn’t follow their instructions on how to cook them.
Trinity says her dad puts some spicy sauce on it before he puts it in the oven. “Then he takes it out and cuts it in pieces,” she said.
“My mom has to get the turkey,” said Kamryn, a second-grader at Sawtooth Mountain Elementary. “There’s a little thing in the turkey, you’ve got to get it out. It’s like a baggie. Then she cooks the turkey. She puts it in the oven. She cooks it for about one-half hour.” How hot is the oven? “20 degrees.” Erica says turkeys can cook even faster than that: “eight minutes,” she said. “Then you take it out and eat it!” Maggie said her grandma cooks Thanksgiving turkey so she isn’t too sure how she did it. “I think she puts it on a plate and puts it in the oven. She cooks it for five minutes.” Finn says his dad cooks their Thanksgiving turkey. “He puts stuffing in the middle. I think he puts lettuce all around it. He cooks it at maybe … 50 degrees?”
Tighe said his dad “usually puts it in the oven for seven or six or five minutes and cooks it at 70, 80 or 90 degrees. He stuffs it first, with salad.”
Amery said her mom dresses the turkey, then, “You put sauce on it.” Her mom also puts a “pokey thing into the turkey -- it’s sort of like a compass. It tells you how hot it is, and then I think you eat it!”

Real Estate Market Picks Up Second Homes Still Slow By Ada Igoe Interest in and sales of Cook County real estate continued increasing this year, said local real estate brokers, but both buyers and lending institutions remain cautious about undertaking a second home. “We’ve seen a steady increase in buyer confidence,” said Kim Wolff of Timber Wolff Realty. “Since summer 2012, there’s been an increase in the volume of sales, but no increase in price.” To date, Wolff said her company has already sold more properties in 2013 than in all of 2012. But while real estate is picking up from the slump of 2008 – 2011, real estate agents around the county agree that buyers remain cautious, price conscious, and driven by necessity rather than desire. “I feel like houses in town are selling well, if they’re priced right,” said Terry Backlund of Backlund Realty. “People want to be near Grand Marais.” Mike Raymond of Red Pine Realty believes part of the drive behind primary home sales is the lack of affordable rental properties in the county. This forces many younger Cook County residents to buy a home, even when they’d prefer to rent, he said.

Backlund said he does see interest in inland lake homes, but interest often fails to translate into sales.
“It’s true that residential is busy,” said Raymond. “But it’s capped at about $250,000.”

When it comes to selling undeveloped property, Backlund said, property is like milk, “and the lowest priced milk always sells.” When potential sellers ask if it’s a good time to list their property, Raymond said he reminds them of two things. First, real estate cycles can be 20-30 years in length, so buyers could be waiting several more years for prices to be at the top of the cycle. Second, the other factor most likely to raise real estate prices is inflation, which means more dollars for sellers, but not more value. Wolff said she feels it’s a good time for sellers to list, but people need to be realistic about prices. Sellers need to accept where the market is at and price accordingly, she said. Sellers can’t expect to get a huge return on their property at the moment, especially if they bought at the height of the housing bub-

Few Wolves Expected to Be Taken in Cook County in Upcoming Season By Shawn Perich Minnesota’s second modern wolf hunting and trapping season begins Nov. 9, when the start of the early season coincides with firearm deer season. The late season opens Nov. 30 and continues until Jan. 31 or whenever the DNR’s harvest quota of 220 wolves is met. This year, both the available licenses and the harvest quota were cut nearly in half as a response to a new statewide wolf population survey, the first since 2008. The DNR’s 2013 wolf population survey estimated 2,211 wolves last winter compared to 2,921 in the winter of 2008. The most recent estimate does not include up to 2,600 wolf pups born last spring, some of which will survive into winter. DNR wildlife biologists believe the decline in the wolf population over the last five years is not related to the 2012 hunting and trapping kill, but instead due to a 25 percent reduction in deer numbers across the wolf range. While some hunters may think otherwise, biologists say the overall wolf population rises and falls in response to the relative abundance of deer, their primary prey. The deer population dropped because the DNR raised hunting bag limits a few years ago to lower deer numbers. The wolf harvest was distributed across northern Minnesota, with more taken near populated areas. Last year, 14 wolves were taken in Cook County, which amounted to about 3 percent of the statewide total take. Minnesota DNR large carnivore specialist Dan Stark believes even fewer wolves will be taken in the county this year. Not only are fewer licenses available, but data for the 2012 season suggests most wolf hunters and trappers stayed near home or pursued wolves in their traditional hunting and trapping areas. Wolf trappers must check their sets every day, limiting the distance they may be willing to travel to do so. The DNR manages wolf harvest, in part, through a system of hunting zones. The target harvest in the northwest zone is 145, down from 265 in 2012. The target harvest in the northeast zone (which includes Cook County) is 65, down from 133. The east-central zone target harvest is 10, down from 18. With the possible exception of the east-central zone, those harvest targets will be divided between the early and late seasons. Last year’s harvest was split evenly between male and female wolves. Over 50 percent of the wolves taken were under two years old. This isn’t surprising, because the average wolf lives less than two years. Wolves can live 10 years in the wild. An 11-year-old animal was the oldest wolf taken last year.

Keep Your Dog Out of Traps Every autumn a handful of dogs are caught in traps set for furbearing animals. Most trap sets include a smelly bait or potion intended to attract the target animal. Unfortunately for dogs, their noses may get them in trouble. Investigating the interesting smell leads them into the trap. Usually when a dog is caught in a trap, the event is mostly a good scare for the dog and owner, because the dog may be released with minimal injury. However, if a dog is caught in a body-grip trap or a snare, the encounter may be fatal. That is unlikely to occur along the North Shore. A few years ago, the Minnesota DNR adopted a trapping rule to protect Canada lynx that requires body-grip traps to be recessed within a box, which keeps the trap out of reach of an inquisitive dog. Dogs are mostly likely to encounter traps during the popular trapping season for pine marten and fisher, which is Nov. 30-Dec. 5. Usually the traps are set in wooded areas within walking distance of a road or trail. If there is snow, you may be able to see the trapper’s tracks. Regardless, just be extra-careful with your dog during this six-day season.
although most trapping efforts cease with the arrival of deep snow. Your dog is unlikely to encounter traps set for water-based furbearers such as mink and muskrat. Occasionally, foot-hold traps and snares for fox are set along or near roadsides, but body-grips are not used. If a dog is left in a snare for a length of time, it may choke. Foot-hold traps are less likely to cause a serious injury. They are used by researchers to trap wolves for radio collar studies. If you dog gets caught in a trap, don’t panic. Unless the trap is a body-grip, the event probably isn’t life-threatening. Before attempting to release the dog, be sure to cover its head with a jacket or blanket. A dog in a trap is likely to bite you because it is frightened and panicking. In Minnesota, all traps must have a tag identifying the owner. However, unless the trap is set on private land without permission or in another, unlawful manner, a dog owner has no recourse. Trappers are protected with a state anti-harassment law. If you take the trap, even if your dog was caught in it, you may be charged with theft. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to report such incidents to a DNR conservation officer.—Shawn Perich
